I called Office Depot West Berkeley to check if an ink cartridge product was in stock and what current policy is on cartridge returns After 11 minutes on hold, I decided to go to the store in person. There was only 1 employee. I asked how many there were supposed to be. The employee said that there were 3 but 2 had 'disappeared' in the last 20 minutes. I found the two ink cartridges I wanted and went to the check out with my 5 return cartridges. The price checks showed that the cartridges were well above online prices. Then I was told that I could not buy the cartridges I wanted and get the return cartridge discount at the same time. Instead, I would have to buy something - anything - for at least $10, turn in the return cartridges and return the next day to buy the cartridges I wanted. 6:30 pm, July 8 Power tripping employees. I went in tonight to print (sticker paper) but both machines are seemingly down. The dude at the print counter says one of them can only take regular paper. I ask if they can print on their sticker paper back there (as they always have but I get that things change), and he says "she" will be back from lunch in 30 minutes. I ask if there's anyway he can do it, but he on a laptop and says he's working on other things. Ok cool. I ask if I can try paper in the printer and he says no, that's why it's messed up. Totally fine. I wait 30 minutes out front and come in and she's back. She explains they only take laser printer sticker paper. "Do they have laser printer paper I can pay for?" Great friendly service from the morning crew staffing the print center, think her name was amy but don't quote me on that. Was feeling good after that purchase. Alas the printer was defective, error code 00031, meaning internal jam. Since i had not put paper in the device and the repair online said i needed a screwdriver to repair what was likelt a daulty print head i was clear that this product was defective out of the box. Took it back for return, could not exchange as they were out of stock. I let the guy working the register know, he was disinterested when I told him the specific error code explaining why it was defective and not apologetic. Not that a defective printer out of the box is his fault but a basic principle of customer service is to acknowledge the customer's inconvenience and express interest in understanding the issue. So whatever, i don't need pampering per se and i know retail can be soul crushing work but i see how this place came by its low rating honestly. read more

The man who works in the print/copy area, does not want to work. He pointed me to the self serve copier and told me that if I didn't go over there, I would have to wait until tomorrow. I agreed to wait until tomorrow and have him do my photo copies. He then gave me multiple confusing instructions in a span of 8 seconds. I asked him to slow down a bit. I also told him that at Office Depot stores, there's an email that customers use to send the photos and the print person prints them out. He says, "Oh! We don't do that here!" I came in and there was one person working the lines and he checked in with me, so I didn't feel like I was waiting around being ignored. There was a second employee and she was working on something, so I didn't feel put off by it. I asked him where the stamps were and he told me. I retrieved my stamp and made my purchase. After entering the store, I wasn't sure where the online pick-up location was located so I headed to the Mail & Ship / Same Day Services counter at the back. I inquired about online orders and he pointed me to the shelves behind the registers. There are three shelves identified broken by last names of A-I, J-R and S-Z. I saw my bag with my name on it, grabbed it and was on my way. I guess there's no control because anyone can walk up, take a bag and walk out. (Customer experience during Covid-19 Pandemic) This has been my go to store for many years, even before they moved from the now Whole Foods location. I pretty much can find what I need - and what I don't. To say that I have a lifetime supply of pens, pencils, highlighters, binder clips, paper clips, magnets, etc., is not an exaggeration. On this visit, I needed a ream of inkjet printer paper. They had a limited selection of paper brands available and did not have the brand I was looking for on their shelves. I chose their house brand and got a ream of both letter and legal sized paper. Keep an eye out when choosing printer paper off the shelves, I noticed some reams were damaged. You definitely do not want to load your printer with bent or torn paper. Other than that, the store is usually well-stocked for whatever I need. I happened to not be greeted when I entered the store, which for me is fine. I only care that someone is at the register when I am ready to conclude my purchase (which there was). The transaction went smoothly, the only stumble was my not remembering which telephone number I had registered for their reward program and had to try a couple of different ones. As for their reward program, since I don't purchase as much as I used to, I don't really use it. Shopping tip: If you can remember, arrange your items so the bar code is face up or visible. It makes it easier for them to scan with the scanner gun and there is less handling. Covid protocols are followed quite diligently. And Navin, who has been there forever was as always, polite and efficient. I like that. read more

I have been going to this location for 5 years for office supplies. Today I walked on to get a stamp made. Cassandra at the print center showed me 5 options. I asked to see how the stamp would look printed on a paper to which she said,"we can't do that". I said, how about put it in a word document and print it. Simple solution. Cassandra made a face and told me,"NEXT TIME YOU CAN GO ONLINE AND DO IT YOURSELF. WE CANT TAKE ALL THIS TIME TO HELP ONE CUSTOMER" If I just go online, you would not have a job, Cassandra. Went in to return an online purchase, which clearly stated on the website, that if there were any problems, with or without the reciept the online pick-up at site option offers worry free returns I bought something I didn't need, went to return it and as soon as I walked in the door the day after j picked it up, a guy being the counter gave me an off putting look like he did not want to help me. He asked for my receipt. I produced the email with the order number that said "ready for pickup". It had an itemized recipt clearly shown. Despite that, on the website itself it clearly states "if you don't like the return, bring it back within 14 days with or without the receipt and we can help you with a VALID ID. This guy, worked at the register Saturday, 12/16/23, at 430 had glasses on, eastern Asian decent, and off the bat did not even greet me and did not want to help me and questioned if I purchased the item there. I clearly picked it up the day before and stated that several times. He had not even been cordial or presented the option that if I didn't have the physical receipt ( I mean it was an online it says "no receipt no problem' option to pickup at the store) he could just look up my drivers license like it says on the customer service portion in the website "how to return". I felt discriminated against because he was stand off ish as soon as I walked in the door, no greeting or anything. Don't go here, you're better off. Victor the print supervisor is brilliant and experienced, and goes above and beyond with creativity to help people make their marketing and events truly special. Cassandra is dedicated, kind and detail-oriented. Livia goes out of her way to make clients feel special and taken care of, and she can put a smile on anyone's face with her service. Richard is extremely skillful and solving computer problems and finding the right technology solutions for the home or business. Andy is extremely knowledgeable, affable, and routinely goes out of his way to help customers get just what they're looking for. Brenda is a great listener and can help clients all over the store. Scotty works hard every day to keep the store well-stocked, organized, and running smoothly, and he brightens the store with his smile and great singing voice. This store is horrible. They have displays out for printers/scanners they don't have. There are stacks of incorrectly placed items so you think it's one price but then when it gets rung up it's different because it was in the wrong price tag spot. The staff all seems to be moving underwater, like they're only half awake. There's half a dozen of them wandering around but it still takes ages to get one of them to help you. My visit here today was a complete waste of time and I will not be returning. And another thing: The place absolutely stinks! I couldn't figure out what the smell was but it was repugnant. read more

Probably some of the worst customer service I've ever received. I came in looking for a couple of Bankers Boxes. Asked an associate where they were and found several single unit boxes. Picked two and headed to checkout. The cashier told me they came in packs of ten and I couldn't buy just one. I explained that there were not displayed in a pack and that their own website sold them in individual units. She called her supervisor, who I could see, to ask if she could sell them. This insolent "boss", rolled her eyes, put her head in her hands. Waited a good 20 seconds before responding that they wouldn't sell me the boxes. I was stunned. I see why this has only 2 stars! THE MANAGER IS INCOMPETENT! I wanted to purchase a hard drive. The checkout person asked the manager to get it out of the locked cabinet. We waited awhile as the manager had a very lengthy and unnecessary conversation with the person she was checking out. The manager had forgotten she needed to help this OTHER customer (me) by the time she'd talked about how she was from Germany, etc. etc. with the other customers. Oh- they didn't have the drives in stock after all, so I had to go through a return. Frustrating , but fine- my cashier handled it quickly. (Manager did not apologize at all) the cash register freaked out in the middle of this, and when the cashier asked the manager for help, she called over someone who had no idea what to do, nor the authority to do anything. (The manager decided to go back to checking folks out in the other line). At this point, I stepped in and told the manager to put this second cashier/floor person at the checkout line so she could handle my useless transaction which had now gone on for 20 minutes or so. Office Depot- you earned zero dollars here- and gained more than one frustrated customer. This could have been avoided if the MANAGER had grabbed the hard drive from the cabinet in a timely fashion to begin with, or had directed employees better after difficulties occurred. Why do I keep writing about the German MANAGER in bold? Because as I left, instead of apologizing for her poor actions, she told me she was going to have a word with the cashier. The cashier was just fine... it's abundantly clear to me that this MANAGER is not effective and is bringing down the store. If nothing else, i just can't seem to understand why no one asks the main cashier (Indian man in his fifties ) to NOT pick his nose for a full transaction with a customer and then TOUCH THE RECEIPT with his nose picking hand right after. Severely mismanaged. While checking out my items, I asked the clerks for a chair that was on display but not publicly stocked. The man helping me went to get a scanner, and took a while coming back. The scanner showed that 2 of the chairs were in stock, but he couldn't find them. I started walking around the store to help. After a while he threw in the towel and said they didn't have them. 40 minutes of my time wasted. And he was helping *everyone* that approached him. I can appreciate that, but it left me just standing there a lot not knowing what was going on. Other clerks in the store definitely could've stepped in to help folks on the floor. We looked at getting the chair delivered, but to get their 30 off 150 deal, all the stuff in my cart would have to be ordered online and delivered instead. What a crappy system, on top of a shitty, time-wasting experience. Lady paying in front of me also seemed pissed. She had all these big, loose items, and asked for a box. Office Depot crushes them up. Ok. The clerk then tries to put all her items in a bunch of small, grocery market-sized bags. Lady gets the most "WTF" look on her face, recomposes herself, and asks for a bigger bag.
