I was pleasantly surprised by the huge selection of moleskine journals and Crane greeting cards! Now that Piedmont Stationers has closed, I will be coming here more often. In fact, Gayle and I stopped by last week on our way to the movie. I bought her a nice little journal (from an impressive array of options) and I ended up with what I think was an A3 size writing pad. Items are a bit spendy, but not overly so. Elmwood Stationers is small, but well stocked with not only journals, but interesting pens, folders, calenders, and other office supplies stuff that one may or may not need. Good variety of paper, envelopes, and stationary in general. Not a very good variety of employees. Or at least not the young people working there. They were rude to me, unwilling to help when I had asked about high cotton papers (probably because they were not trained to know anything about this), and tried to make me pay cash because of a "$5" limit that then was actually not true. Wonderful little stationary shop that carries everyday office supplies, specialty notebooks and DIY stationary. I love that they carry Rhodia, Clairefontaine, and Moleskine notebooks. They also have a great selection of individual paper, cards and envelopes from Waste Not Paper (a Paper Source brand) and Envelopements. There's a nice selection of pens and other writing implements. My favorite part about the store is they sell individual servings of everyday office supplies-- labels by the sheet, individual file folders, writing pads, etc. It's a great feature for those of us who don't need a huge pack of return address labels. What the heck? I did not expect such low reviews! I almost want to even give this spot a 5 star! However, the items are pretty pricey, compared to other similar stores I've seen before. I'd like to see even more stationary, but they do have a good variety. Definitely a cute little shop that I could stay in for a while to browse. WARNING: it will take good discipline to not buy. My favorite items that I saw would probably be their unique cards and postcards. Postcards were not expensive, @ .50cents to .99cents each. I will be back! read more

I should have reviewed this place years ago, since I regularly (or used to) buy supplies from Elmwood Stationers but always forgot. My previous experiences here ranged from "meh" to below average (and I never really had high expectations), but the past couple of months really sucked! I came here a few times recently to get envelopes, pens and other supplies (which I have found here before). I didn't see the envelopes I usually get, so I asked if they had any more, and the new skinny teenage/college aged girl (light brown hair) shortly replied, "No," and immediately turned her head down again to her phone or book (not sure what she was looking at) and I didn't care enough to stick around to see or be inside any longer. Instead I just went to Staples and got a multicolored pack of the envelopes I wanted (for a cost much less than here with more quantity). Another time I went in, the same new cashier girl and a new cashier guy (about college age too, black hair) were just chatting at the register station the whole time doing nothing, like the store was a dorm hallway or some frat house, while a couple customers browsed the store. The other day I went in to buy pens (and knew what I wanted), then a couple of elderly people entered after me. They asked the cashier girl something, and the reply again was a quick "No" close down. I looked back and they looked confused (probably thinking the same thing I thought before: "Why are these clerks so rude?" And "Why don't they make any effort for products previously bought here with different clerks?"). Don't know. The new retail clerks here just can't be bothered with anything except whatever it is they're looking at or chatting about at the center of that register station. The only thing they seem to want/know how to do is ring you up, and even then they act like you just ruined their day when they haven't helped you in any way and paying takes less than a minute. Just the most horrible clerks I have seen anywhere. For anything else besides paying, don't bother. That's not the type of service or business I want to support, so I left and went Downtown to Staples again to buy my pack of Uni-Ball Signo pens (even though I could have bought them here, which is closer to me). I mainly went here due to it being conveniently near me and already have low expectations, but these new clerks require you to sink your expectations even lower. In contrast to them, the many times I have gone here before the young man who was there for years (seemed about high school age, got taller through the years, brown hair and worked before and after the remodel), was a little friendlier and actually tries to be helpful when you have a question. He walked the aisles and sorted shelves. If an item a customer was looking for wasn't on the shelf, he asked more questions about the material, size, etc. of the paper/envelope/card/item or would go to the back to see if they had more in stock. Sometimes he found the product, other times he didn't. But he wasn't just in his own mind bubble and never gave a quick, reflex "No" to customers but followed up. Not sure if the young guy just works less now or was on a summer trip or is just gone, but he was a better clerk. Or before the store's remodel, there was a hipster-ish girl (with bangs, usually had a beanie and bicycled), was also actually helpful to customers, walked aisles, organized shelves, followed up on inquiries and not just declining questions to stay on the phone or just staying motionless at the cashier station. My rating of one star is because of the previous cashiers/clerks, otherwise (based on the new clerks) it would be 0 star (but really more like -2 stars if that was an option). Been going here for years since before the remodel when I was an undergrad and then after the remodel to now as I entered the professional world. I won't be giving Elmwood Stationers another try again. Even if I'm tempted to browse cards/pens while walking to a local cafe to write a card, seeing those new clerks will definitely make sure I won't even step inside. I'll just go to Therapy (next door), Papyrus (across the street) or Staples (in the downtown area) or the paper stores on 4th St. instead. All of those stores' clerks actually work, help customers etc. and aren't trapped in their own little mind bubble. read more

Yikes boy has this store changed. It had nothing I needed for my business, no boxes of files, usually $5 to $10 per box of 100 they had folders $00.17 each. And legal size hanging holders, nothing. Not sure what they are selling here, very marked up items. Anyone who really needs office supplies stay away. I have been a customer for 30 years but what's happened to this store is on the owners. I love the gelly roll pen I got!! I needed something glittery for a card, and the one I got worked perfectly. I also love their selection of cardstock and envelopes for creating personalized messages, though I have bought cards as well of course because they have a great selection. read more

I will not set foot in this store again. The woman who works there, who I believe is the owner, is rude in a particularly poignant way. Well stocked store, never an issue about the store itself. However, the staff - in this case, a short, stubby girl with fake blond hair - often seems to be on hire from their kids' high school friends. When I asked for a certain type of card, saying apologetically that I couldn't seem to find them, I was told they were on the racks oitside like I was an idiot. She never asked whether she could help me, and when I asked for help with another item, it was the same immature attitide. I lived in the neighborhood, as does my family. With attitude like this, I don't feel guilty going elsewhere . read more

In the days before grow-your-own business cards, I ordered business cards from them. Twice in a row, they screwed up the cards. The owner is not friendly and made it clear he thought it was not his responsibility to get the cards right. Prices are on the high side here as well, so I only shop here when I'm in a rush and can't make it to Office Depot. I also agree with the reviews below about the poor staff. Much as I'd like to support my local stationery store, in this case I can't do that or recommend them in good conscience. Elmwood Stationers is sub-par. read more

This is a great little stationers, great selection of cool notebooks, journals, planners, pens, etc. We go there every year for back-to-school supplies, and several times in between for stock-ups. Yeah, there are plenty of places where you can buy cheaper but this place has a great selection and we can't let Target take over the world for want of a couple of bucks! I love Elmwood Stationers. For those who love pens of all sorts and pencils, and paper, beautiful or yellow & lined, ink, calendars, file folders -- this is your place to roam. There aren't many 'stationers' left! And to my surprise & delight, I've found there's one in Lafayette CA, between the PO & Trader Joe's. Wonderful assortment of unique cards, too. I think someone mentioned a clerk. In my experience, the young Lafayette clerk seemed a bit distracted, but once engaged in conversation & assisting was delightful! This is a cute little stationery store that has a very good selection of unique and quality greeting cards and other stationery. This is a place for people who actually put effort into finding humorous, pretty, quality cards to send, so, you won't be finding any $0.99 cards that you find in the pharmacy. Just FYI. Plus, it's located in the upscale Elmwood area, so, don't be too shocked by the prices. They also have a good collection of cute or clever stationery-related gifts (erasers, stickers, staplers...) and a lot of beautiful journals to choose from. I've definitely found some interesting items here that I haven't seen anywhere else. There are many places to find cute cards on College Ave, but only Elmwood carries necessities like printer paper, office supplies, envelopes and mailers. They carry fun stuff, too, and I love to browse. I've seen people mention that the staff is rude or apathetic, but I haven't experienced any of that. This little store is great! It has regular stationary items like file folders and manila envelopes. It also has cute cards. I got holiday cards made in the USA at this shop. Across the street, at the fancy-smancy card shop, they only had cards that said "Merry Christmas" and only made in China. Yuck! I celebrate the holidays, not Christmas. I prefer to use something that says Happy Holidays or Peace. My choice is Elmwood Stationers. read more

She's so knowledgeable I asked her about her background and it turns out she has worked for some of the big names in the biz and that's why she really knows her stuff. Plus, she's warm and funny and loves what she does...really, she'll make the whole experience so much more enjoyable. She carries all the best lines of invitation stationery...all the big names. This place has some cute notebooks and stationery sets and the like, but in general it is overpriced, doesn't have great selection of cards or essential stationery items, and honestly it creeps me out every time I come in here to shop. The owner's crotchety personality and almost accusatory mode of constant surveillance make me feel like a criminal just for having walked in the door. You can find any of the nice things they have here at other stationers, like Alko. And if you are looking for some office item you'll have better luck finding it, parking/getting to it by public transportation, and getting out the door without being treated rudely if you go to Staples or Office Depot. read more
