Sunglass case I made in Module 1 - Sewing machine basics (open).
    Sherry G.

When I heard about this place, I was SEW excited (pun intended)! I've been wanting to learn how to use a sewing machine for a while, but I don't have the space for it in my apartment. I signed up for the first class, which was "Skill building sessions - module 1 (sewing machine basics)" in early July. The project for the first class was to create a carrying case for sunglasses (or pens). Everything we needed was laid out, including fabric, from which we could choose whichever two we wanted. Eli, the teacher and owner, would show us what to do while describing what she was doing (as well as what not to do). I found her to be patient, positive and supportive. She would let us know that we didn't have to be perfect and helped fix or undo mistakes. Fortunately, the first project had enough room for error to allow for that flexibility. Since I was one of the slower students, I had to check in a little more often with Eli since I missed the initial instruction and she would go over it again with me. In fact, there was something I missed at the cutting table, and I started sewing the wrong pieces together at the machine. Fortunately, Eli noticed it and helped remedy it by cutting the piece I overlooked. For those who are left-handed, she does have left-handed scissors!

    A photo of the shirt!

I took my first class: made a jacket for my wife in a day, with virtually no prior sewing experience. Enjoyed it so much, I signed up for a second class: made a shirt! Again, in a day. Took my third class just last week, pieced a quilt...in a day. I look forward to many, many more. Eli is fun, patient, listens well, and explains everything beautifully. Studio Sessions is one of those things that is simple put, a rare treat.

My tote! And my friend's sunglasses case from Module 1.

I took the module 2 sewing class yesterday, and absolutely loved it. I've been learning to sew on my own at home and have always felt a little overwhelmed - not so in this environment. Eli, the owner, brings such calm confidence to her teaching and I was delighted to spend a few hours with some amazing folks learning together. Plus now I have this special tote that I made myself! Highly recommended!!

I highly recommend Eli and Studio Sessions! I booked a private, beginning level sewing class for my team of 6 as a team-building activity and we had a great time. Most of my team was coming in with zero sewing experience, and they were surprised and proud to come out of the class with a completed project. Eli was warm and welcoming, encouraged us to have fun, and walked us through all parts of the project with patience and clarity: using a pattern to cut the fabric, winding the bobbin, threading the machine, and sewing on the machine to produce a drawstring pouch. A couple of my team members are looking forward to continuing this new hobby and I'd definitely come back for another class in future!

I had such a great experience - this was my first time doing any type of pottery. The first class we just got the basics and played around and made a few small pieces. The second class we were able to add color to the clay itself, and then also in tandem, begin a "final project" aka bigger piece. During the third and final class, we learned about glazing and got to glaze our pieces! A week later, we were able to swing by the studio to grab our pieces at our convenience. I was able to make 5 pieces - some people probably made more like 8-10. I signed up for a full length class (two months) next session since I loved it so much! Can't wait to be back! And shoutout again to Hue who is awesome!! Would love to have her again as an instructor.

The first class is a great introduction to painting with oil, and the second was a continuation with live models. Having had been away from art for years, these classes were able to bring the connection back. They definitely made my one evening a week. Scott is a great instructor; he has a relaxed style of teaching that I definitely enjoyed. I also liked sharing a class with other art enthusiasts with different skills and styles. It was so fun to walk around the class and see how everyone would interpret the same model! The classroom was spacious, equipped with the tools we needed, and had amazing views of campus. Classes can be a little bit pricey if you're not a student at UC Berkeley (like me). Remember, you need to buy all of the materials. But, they're definitely worth it. If you're a student, you should definitely take advantage of them. I miss these classes!

I recently spent 2-full days learning to paint with wax (a process called "Encaustics"). Kala provided all materials and instruction then set us loose in the studio to have at it, along with continuing tips and topics sprinkled in throughout the days, as we learned enough to absorb additional information and tools. 2 days here (10 - 4 each day) flew by quicker than an hour does at my job. Witnessing each student's process and finished products was inspiring. The instructor taught at a level that seemed fully understandable but most so to those with an art background (which most students had). Having only an appreciation for art, I think I'd have benefited more from a little more structure. Still, I got a kick out of the instructor getting our attention by calling out "Artists!" and then talking about things we might do in "your own studio". Riiiight... Regardless of my inabilities, it was still very fun and inspiring. The 2-day workshop cost $272 which is a big chunk of change but worth it. For 2-full days the only thing I focused on was creating art and learning the processes. I pushed all my neuroses to the back of my mind and just let the creative part prevail. Cheaper than therapy, I say. Kala runs lots of different art classes, is easy to find and has ample street parking right out front. The registration process is easy, the work space is big and airy, and the classes are fun. I'm busy thinking how I can arrange things to get myself doing something like this monthly.

I thoroughly enjoyed the flexible after-work hours where I could relax and concentrate on just a few set tasks that go into making a screen and prints. I'd love to come back and take more silkscreen later in the year!

To give you a sense of how much my kid loves this art class, I'll say this: There were precisely two things she missed the most during COVID, and that was going to Disneyland and Doug's Sunday morning art classes. Doug is really knowledgeable--I did art reviews at the Rhode Island School of Design for a while, so I have a sense of elements that make up art. Doug knows this really well, and this allows him to help people develop their art. Because he can break down what makes art, he can demystify the process for his students. Doug's intelligence really shines through when he helps his students focus on technique. Doug is also incredibly terrific with kids. He's not some dictator or sergeant. He gives gentle advice (again, advice that is *really* smart), and he knows how to push, how to inspire, and how to let a kid's imagination run. He's patient and calm, and he smiles and laughs. This is a person who really does love art, and he wants to share that love with others. Dropping my kid off at Doug's place, I see kids who are younger, teens, and adults. He has a capacity to speak to each of these age groups. It's impressive, and we're really appreciative that our kid gets to attend his classes.

I found out about and registered for the class super last minute by calling Cecilia the day before…read morethe start date and she was able to fit me in. Cecilia is pleasant and the class I am in consists of 8 women, all 30-40 age range. The class that I am taking is called Beginning Sewing I : From the Start. This is a 5 classes series that consists of a weekly 3 hour class from 6pm - 9pm. The class in 5 parts costs $175 (not including materials, which you would have to purchase yourself) consists of: Class 1: Sewing and general concepts Class 2: How to read pattern, marking and cutting patterns, and custom fitting. Class 3: Sewing machine, sewing seams, finishing seams. Class 4: Pressing techniques and pressing tools Class 5: Finish sewing project The series consists of making of a garment from patterns, and we are not expected to touch a sewing machine until the 3rd class. There is a lot of learning -- about fabrics, patterns, and cuts. Thus far what I find the most interesting thing I have learned is why clothes don't fit and how to make adjustments. It is an eye-opening experience for me to take this class. Cecilia is very organized and knowledgeable -- you will learn things in her class that won't be found in your regular beginning sewing book. As for the store, you won't find fabrics or patterns here. The small store offers a good selection of notions (Cecilia has mentioned that she's picky about the quality of what she puts in her store), some books, sewing machines, and sewing furniture (which needs to be ordered and then delivered). There are other classes available but schedules are still being worked out. Beginning Sewing seems to be the most popular regular class.

The only really frustrating thing about the experience was trying to get an estimated time frame of when the apron would be done. When I asked when I could expect it, the lady sternly told me she had a lot of orders but it would be ready by Saturday. I probably should have been more direct about when exactly I needed it but I just figured they close at 6pm so it would have to be done before then... I called around 3pm and was told it would be ready by 4:30. Luckily I was able to get it wrapped and ready for a bday dinner...but it was definitely cutting it close. I'd recommend bringing in your items way in advance just in case they are backed up and can't turn an order over quickly.
