I went to Pot-Pourri yesterday to ask Max if he knew a woodworker who could repair a wooden bowl that had been broken. The bowl had been dropped before, several years ago, w/ slight damage that had been fixed, but this was much more major. Max couldn't think of anyone to recommend but as we talked he reassembled a few of the larger shards and taped them in place w/ blue tape to hold them. Fatima, who cleans for me and who dropped it, felt terrible and offered to replace it, but Alan and I bought it decades ago in Hanalei Maui and it can't be replaced. I will pick up some wood glue at a hardware store and she can take it home and work on it when she has time. When I went to write this review I was delighted to see so many others have written reviews of Pot-Pourri. For a while I was the only one. Being in the gallery tugged at my heart as usual because there are always so many beautiful and tempting objects, but I resisted all temptation. Doesn't mean I won't go back again to look further, though. I've popped into Pot-Pourri in North Berkeley with a sense of familiarity, an incredibly charming and gem of a store, with so many delightful pieces of art. Reasonable price points for exquisite pieces and a wide variety of items. The shop is very airy and inviting and you can linger for a while discovering new treasures. On my last visit I asked Max the shop owner who is very personable and charismatic if the Berkeley location was related to the Oakland shop my mother would take me to as a child, sure enough, the Oakland location was his parents...which explains the sense of "deja vu". :) I live in SF, and I make sure every time I am visiting Berkley I drop into Pot-Pourri, to shop and take in all the visual beauty. You know when you walk into a crafty store and you see lots of beautiful things and you admire the taste of the owner(s) and then you look at the prices and sigh a little? This is NOT that store - one of the best things about shopping at Pot-Pourri is that not only is every item tasteful and beautiful, it is also a great value. I have walked in a couple of times to buy a gift for someone and left with multiple gifts for people I hadn't intended to buy for (ok, including myself ;)) because I saw something that I knew they would love and it was totally reasonably priced. I cannot tell you how personal the store is and how helpful its owners are. You must visit. I have purchased handmade organic soaps from a local artisan that they carry. I have wind chimes that lasted for decades, through storms and high Santa Ana winds. I have sent new mothers little books that are not mass-produced and are touching. I am delighted to start Holiday shopping with Potpourri. At a time when more introspection and more meaningful gratitude is upon us, I will spend more time at our newest addition on Vine Street. I stopped in today just to browse in this welcome artsy addition to Berkeley but couldn't leave without buying two special, affordable holiday gifts for family members. This crafts store has something for everyone -- reasonably-priced, one-of-a-kind gifts up to higher-end craft collectibles that come from all over the country. For those of us who will really be missing the similar selection at this year's (postponed..?) KPFA crafts fair, this is a wonderful substitute during COVID! We had fun soaking up all the creativity that's packed into this store, then strolled on for coffee at Peet's and a wander thru Books Inc. -- a one-stop mini-vacay from COVID, smoke, etc!
