We particularly love the oak pieces and have had a few for quite a long time but their rug collection is also very nice and we have two. Even though we've moved out of Oakland we still come visit whenever we are in town and regularly order to LA where we currently live. So glad to have discovered this store many years ago when we were living there and I think folks in other cities are missing out if they haven't discovered it too. SOBU is one of my favorite home decor stores in the Bay Area. They consistently curate fantastic art and hand-crafted pieces, many from local artists and woodworkers. We discovered SOBU because we were looking for local stores carrying a specific Ethnicraft bench. We decided to purchase the bench through them because they were so responsive and easy to work with. We are extremely happy with both the bench itself and service we received from SOBU. Since our first purchase, we have made the hour drive from the Peninsula several times to visit the SOBU showroom. Seeing their new art and featured pieces alone has made the drive worth it. SOBU consistently carries so many pieces we would love to have in our home. In general, their staff is super helpful. Recently, we showed up to the store looking for bonus seating for our living room and Monique took a lot of time in showing us possible options. Thanks to Monique, we decided on a dining stool we never would have thought of on our own. And even though the specific one we wanted was not available, Hannah worked with us on an order the next day. We are very excited for our second SOBU piece! read more

I have bought a number of Sobu pieces over the years (couch, side table, pendant light, and most recently dining chairs) and adore all of them! While the staff have always been very helpful, I live a little further away now so tend to just order online because I know which pieces I want and their delivery has been speedy and fantastic. Their pieces are incredibly well-made and beautiful and are quietly rugged enough for daily use without showing barely any wear, and strike the balance I love between modern and nostalgic. Updating my review. We still own all the furniture, and the table still needs resurfacing, but we love it. And we love our comfy chair and square foot stool. I went in today, and there is a different feel to the store. Hannah, the person on staff today, was very helpful and patient as we discussed table heights, chairs, and custom work. I first discovered SOBU a decade ago when I bought my sweetie a bike from India as a gift - this was back when they were located in Old Oakland. The interaction was memorably pleasant ;) In 2024 I decided to purchase items including several gorgeous pieces from Ethnicraft. Mostly purchased on sale including free shipping on several items which is EPIC. The delivery location was the coastal Humboldt and their white glove was impeccable despite this challenging locale. What I really want to say is that the good folks at SOBU know their stuff and you will be dealing with just wonderful people when you shop SOBU. I absolutely adore everything I've purchased. I bought a woody sofa from SOBU about 2 years ago and absolutely love it. It has held up remarkably well and the cushions and frame are both of high quality. About a year or so after the initial couch buy, I reached out to see if I could purchase an extra set of cushion covers. I honestly didn't think this would be possible, but the owners came through and sent me an invoice ASAP. they were delivered quickly and fit perfectly. We'd spent months searching for the right chairs for our new dining room setup before ultimately stumbling onto the black ash Copenhagen chairs from Sobu online. They were, by far, the best apparent combination of quality and price for an approximation of designer Danish elbow chairs that we had found. We live in Chicago, but upon calling the store to ask about availability (the chairs weren't currently in stock and would be shipping out in "the fall"), we were greeted by a friendly, helpful sales person who did everything she could to best approximate how many chairs they had coming and when an order of 8 might arrive to us. After ordering the chairs and getting free white glove delivery as part of the order, Sobu's team was communicative throughout the process about the timeline we could expect and when the chairs would be arriving. The turnaround time was only a few weeks, and the chairs were absolutely beautiful. When the only person working in the store is on her cell phone for almost the entire 20 minutes you are in the store, never once making eye contact or smiling, you wonder how on earth this place could stay in business. I then watched in disbelief as another potential customer came in, looked around, seemingly interested in a pair of stools high up on a shelf, and the storekeeper/clerk paid no attention and started taking care of something in a cupboard or drawer low behind the counter. SOBU is a neighborhood gem with beautifully designed furniture and art of all kinds. It is a treat to wander through this store and the owners (Laleh and Allesandro) are so warm hearted and friendly. The customer service is superb. We are delighted with several pieces we have purchased over time, designed by Allesandro. Delivery is easy and if the item doesn't fit just right, the owners are perfect about letting it come back. I have a hard time 'seeing' how something is going to look before it is in its place. We purchased a Mikado dining table from SOBU. The experience has been wonderful. After a few months, we noticed a little small indentation on the table surface and checked in with Laleh to understand if those were normal. Laleh checked in with the manufacturer and got them to agree on an exchange for the table! The new table shipped out from North Carolina with white glove service to exchange out the old table. I received a dining table from Sobu on May 17. It arrived from the delivery company with a crack on one end. The delivery professionals instructed me to contact the company where I'd ordered the table and request a replacement. I promptly called Sobu and no one picked up. I emailed info@sobusobu.com with my order number and photos of the damage. Since May 18, I have followed up via email and tried calling Sobu numerous times. Even during business hours (making sure it's CA business hours as I'm on the east coast) my call goes to voicemail, which says I am calling outside of business hours, and to leave a message. I am not sure what else to do for someone at Sobu to call or email me back other than write this review. read more
