I recently checked out the new Narrator store. It's basically the same location, but bigger than ever and the new space lends itself so well to the fun and eclectic vibe of this shop. I'm not a huge vintage collector, but I wanted to find a vase with some character and they did not disappoint. There were fun vases and more. I think strolling through to see what they have could be a new favorite Jack London square activity because it could take an hour or more to take a look at all the different sections.

Great selection on valued vintage items, courteous welcoming staff, beautifully displayed in a voluminous interior space.

Today's outing brought a huge "new to me" surprise to my eyes for those art furniture seekers who love to look at the re-sale of collections from other collectors, individuals and art preservationists for the next generation to seize, honor and admire. I happened upon Narrative, a "Premier Vintage Design collective" in the former space of Bed Bath and Beyond in the Jack London Square neighborhood. The space is massive and has a lot of natural light and open air ceiling with hardwood floors. The owners really did a fine job on renovating the space to make it comfortable for all. Staff shared that a small cafe will be forthcoming, too! What a surprise and to see how expansive it is inside. Lots of great pieces that are curated and edited by staff/vendors to delight the consumer. If you do not have a design esthetic, pay attention to how each group is edited and you will find your design groove or at least embellish what you have in the making. This is not a muted store with no colors, there are lots of colors popping everywhere. You know that thought, if you wait and go back days later thinking the piece you had your eye on will still be there, think again, it may not. If you really like it, buy it before someone else does. I was like a kid in the biggest art gallery store and then it kept getting bigger and bigger and better with more items to look at. I left with 3 pieces and a small painting. There is plenty of street parking. Narrative is open daily from 11 am to 7 pm. The staff is courteous and attentive and open to helping you put pieces aside that you want while you continue shopping. I will say no more as Narrative is a must see for collectors of all walks of life. They also have a monthly free admission, pet friendly Oakland Vintage Market each first Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm with at least 50 vendors at 222 Jefferson street.

Kilims, funky aluminum signs, deco and mid century pieces. The real find is the artist studios in back (studio 11).

I have only purchased hard furniture - i would go to a seating specialist for upholstered items. Prices are reasonable for what you are paying for - timeless and solid quality. Extremely disappointing and unprofessional experience with the West Elm Emeryville store,…read morespecifically with Lana, the store manager. I own a design-build firm and was working on furnishing a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home in San Francisco. The plan was to purchase most of the furniture new, with West Elm and CB2 as the main vendors under consideration. Aside from a Saarinen table and a few rugs I already had available for styling, nearly everything else was going to be sourced new. I booked an appointment earlier in the week for Friday afternoon and adjusted other appointments to make that time work. Then, on Friday morning, Lana called and immediately launched into a very rude and dismissive conversation about the appointment. Rather than asking thoughtful questions or trying to understand the scope of the project, she made it clear that they did not want to come out if I was not guaranteed to buy something. She said they keep the option open in case it is "not worth their time." That was incredibly off-putting, especially considering I was already styling the home with West Elm pieces and seriously considering West Elm for a large portion of the furnishing package. As a design-build professional, I work with many vendors, and this is not how serious trade or retail relationships are handled. When I explained that the short timing, the disruption to my schedule, and the lack of professional communication reflected poorly on West Elm, Lana was dismissive again and said I had already made my feelings clear. Immediately after hanging up, she sent the appointment cancellation. The issue is not just that the appointment was cancelled. It is the tone, the assumption that my project was not worth their time, and the complete lack of professionalism from a store manager. Based on other recent reviews, poor customer service does not seem to be an isolated experience at this location or with West Elm more broadly. I was prepared to source a meaningful amount of furniture through West Elm, but this interaction made it clear that I should take the business elsewhere. I would not recommend the Emeryville store for designers, builders, or customers expecting professional service.

I used to visit to find that hidden gem or get inspired to transform a piece of unwanted item into a functional item like a planter or garden art. This place is great for a DIYer or handy man as items have so much potential but can be a bit overwhelming if you're looking for something specific. My recent visit was to find a replacement window for a mini table-top greenhouse I put together about 15 years ago. Unfortunately, after a recent windstorm, 1 window broke and needed to be replaced. The original windows I bought were from a salvage/building resource spot in SF. At the time, buying 6 windows cost me $70 at most. Now (15 years later) for the same quality it will cost you $35-$60/window at Urban Ore. Ouch! I guess these windows may be used for a remodel of an older home. They do have another section for cheaper windows but sadly they look like the one I'm trying to replace...some wood rot, flimsy, peeling and weathered as they're not protected from the elements. Staff outside are friendly and helpful. Worth a stop to check out but some pricing on items a bit higher. Parking inside the gate and along the street.

I went to the front and offered to take the CDs they were sending to the landfill. I stated I had boxes with me - the staff seemed amenable however when the manage Claudio was asked he overruled them and stated "no" - the CDs are now on the landfill - I have a machine to resurface discs, a press to flatten creased artwork and thousands of cases - however a company who's catch phrase is "zero waste" dumped" thousands of perfectly salvageable items. I contacted Urban Ore via email, via messaging and tagged them in social media as well as posting on their own FB page - no response. People donate items to Urban Ore thinking they think they are keeping them out of the landfill - the behavior of Claudio shows that this is a lie and Urban Ore appears to be a scam.

They've got so many choices and it was really hard to narrow it down but we ended up going with the Vihals 6-drawer dresser. We saw it in the showroom, took a picture of where in the warehouse it would be, and once we got to the bottom floor it was a breeze. What wasn't a breeze was putting the darn thing together. 3-hrs on a Sunday to build this dresser was no easy task but we made it happen. If there's one feedback, I think written versions of the instructions would be more helpful. The pictures aren't always clear cut and sometimes it's hard to know left from right. Maybe it's user error but some verbiage of instructions would've gone a long way. We opted to skip the food court this time around because our last few times eating there it just wasn't as good as it used to be. After checkout though, they have a meatball sundae, which comes with 3 meatballs, mashed potatoes, and their berry sauce. It's a solid snack for $2.50ish. Their spicy mustard actually paired well with everything. I had the lowest of low expectations but actually it was quite nice to tide me over until we made it to actual lunch. The parking situation is pretty easy here, but it's far from the entrance. Make sure to wear some comfy shoes if you plan on buying bigger items.
