This place is such a gem to have in Berkeley. It is compact and loosely organized, so if you have something specific in mind, you will likely find it with some patience. Beads, stamps, scissors, tape, thread, doodads, notebooks, binders, etc--there are so many items that I will never need to buy new, for good prices. I was looking for a spool of translucent heavy duty nylon to tie down balloons. So specific, and yet I found one! I recently toured a waste transfer facility, and we Americans make a lot of trash. The selection is incredible. Prices are a little high for some items, but you can truly find anything here. I walked away with old slides, a set of risqué drink coasters , yarn, stencils, jewelry... and am still sad about the things I left behind, weeks later. This place was recommended to me, so I decided to visit since I was in the area (just in time since October is #ZeroWasteMonth). I had a greeting card whose matching envelope was torn, so I was hoping this place would have a match. The entrance has some cool artwork, and the place was filled to the brim with items - some new, some used. Passageways are a little bit narrow so be mindful of large bags. The place even had items that I wouldn't consider art-related, like toys and DVD's. As with many reuse/thrift stores, some digging around and treasure-hunting may be necessary. A great place to stop in and get acquainted with. They have all sorts of things. Besides fabric, thread, buttons, beads, magnifying lenses, office supply-type equipment (non-guillotine slider paper slicer), paper stuff, plus some very interesting odds and ends such as a patented small metal sewing ruler with interesting cut-outs as guidemarks for sewing or paper crafting. I wish I'd known about this place when I needed just one water-soluble marker and had to buy the whole set elsewhere. read more

The idea of this place is really cool. Unfortunately it is really overwhelming and cramped. I think if things were better organized I would feel more comfortable shopping, but I had to move 5-6 different times to let one of the owners (or employee. Not sure) walk past me. Half rescued/recycled stuff, half gallery for the owners (I totally forgot to get her name - I'm so sorry!) own awesome sculptures and paintings, it's like stepping into a whimsical wonderland. There is so much stuff, but she and her husband keep it clean and organized. You could probably find anything you could possibly need for a project here, from knitting to books, painting to leather and candle scraps, school supplies, frames, conventional and unconventional materials alike. Seriously I won't ever have to buy new again. Prices are good - I bought several canvases, a few odds & ends and someone's funky old pastel drawing all for $20. What a treasure!! I found out about this shop after another recycle/reuse business couldn't take much of my stuff (art glass, foam core, etc.). Frida took most of what I had, but that was really just the cherry on the sundae. Her store is a charming mix of whimsical and beautiful handmade art (made by Frida) as well as, well, pretty much any other item you might imagine in such a store. Antiques, buttons, bolts of fabric, vintage records, beads and jewelry, etc. etc. Definitely an artist's paradise, but also with a clear and strong ethos around the value and importance of reuse and love of the planet. Great place to take kiddos for art project supplies. During a time when I've felt scared and disappointed about the direction our world is going, this was a much-needed breath of fresh air. I was on the lookout for a mannequin today. I visited some other craft stores with reused supplies and this one was truly something special! I met Frida and she was incredibly kind and the love she pours into this space and her art shows. I ended up finding a mannequin at an incredible price as well as some other jewelry findings. Anything you can think of is here! The store is really well organized too and Frida is super helpful. I was amazed to learn she makes her own art as well.
