Stone Mountain & Daughter Fabrics in Berkeley has a stellar reputation in the sewing world, so I had to see what all the buzz was about when I was visiting Berkeley last month. While there was definitely a wide variety of fabric, the overall store felt a bit chaotic, cluttered, and unorganized. The upstairs has some discounted bolts but nothing really caught my eye. While browsing, I checked their website and spotted Ruby Star Society's selvedge/letter fabric but of course I couldn't find it in the store, so I had to ask. And while the staff helped, the service was just okay. The selection is decent but I think my expectations were higher given the hype. read more

I love love love this store!! Went to get some buttons today and realized I have never reviewed this amazing place. Bad on me. If you are a fabric-head, this is the place. It's like Berkeley Bowl is for foodies. Patterns you cant get just anywhere, as well as nice selection of quality fabrics and notions packed into a small store. You want oilcloth, wool suiting, linen, muslin, cotton? Yup. Upstairs they offer sewing classes, but I've never taken one here but would imagine they are good. read more

I've been coming to Stonemountain for a few years now and have always liked their selection. Also Shannon is great and has helped me so much! Good assortment of textiles ranging from quilting cottons to European designer deadstock fabrics, which I love but they seem to not get as much as they used too, and all at a very good price for the Bay. They also have a great selection of sewing patterns that are size-inclusive and beginner friendly! A couple gripes though: (1) The line! I think people get confused because of that "hold table" Customers have cut me and it gets crowded up there when its busy and IT GETS BUSY! so *ATTN newbies* pre-shop online, they have an amazing website. (2) I've encountered some mildew-y linen bolts in some questionable shelving (looks like mold) hopefully this gets addressed soon! (3) Dust! dust bunnies have rained down on me one time. read more

Quilters! This is the store for you. Friendly Helpful staff (with mad math skills). Great selection of quilting cotton and batiks - sorted by color. AND every notion imaginable. So impressed with the size of the store - they have three big rooms, two downstairs where fabric is mostly $12-25/yard and up, and one room upstairs which is half price. This means that the upstairs quilting fabric is marked down from about $14/yard to around $7/yard, which is a steal! read more

STILL obsessed with this store. It is a bit of a drive but it's the best in the Bay. Even as someone who buys fabric online I still find this shop has the best variety and you can find such unique fabrics you don't see elsewhere. Stonemountain is a neat store that I didn't expect to find in Berkeley. They have a little bit of everything and a really nice selection of some unexpected things - like Sashiko embroidery kits/threads and sewing patterns from indie companies. I popped in before moving to a place with really cold winters so I talked myself out of buying some funky wool coating material because of practicality vs. cost and I'm still kicking myself to this day for not buying and hoarding it. The store doesn't sell or service machines, this is all about the materials. The people working there are nice enough but I didn't have to consult anyone during my purchase so your mileage may vary. read more

It is impossible to represent the universe of textiles in a medium-sized store, but S&D does a very respectable job. They've always leaned towards natural fabrics, and they carry less stretch velvet/lycra than they used to. Check their website to get a feel for whether they're likely to have what you're looking for. Lately I've been into cotton prints, and I've been extremely happy with their selection. The vast majority of what they carry is gorgeous IMO, and I can usually find combinations I love. (The toddler and her Elmo have matching aprons. Not sorry.) They have additional stock upstairs (often seasonal or slow-to-sell) at half-price. I don't know if they have an elevator or not; it's an old building. I've never been shy about asking for assistance, and the staff has always been helpful. They'll give you an opinion if you ask for it (super-helpful if you're coordinating fabrics), and I don't feel like anyone has said "yes, nice!" just to make a sale. read more

This fabric store has the most beautiful variety of unique fabrics - and notions! I bought some jazzy purple buttons for a blouse I made, and these buttons were so cute and so different! If you're looking for variety, this is the place to come. I thought the prices were crazy high though and I did check out the upstairs half price area but I didn't find what I was looking for in that area. In all fairness, it is good quality fabric. So if variety and quality are important to your project, you'd definitely want to check this place out. If pricing matters to you and your project doesn't really depend much on variety, I personally would look elsewhere. I thought they were friendly to myself and my family. They were helpful and made sure I found what I needed. It's a nice option to have now that JoAnn's is closing but I don't know that I would purposefully go out of my way to come read more

Wonderful fabric shop that carry a wide range of solid color cottons. I really love their Michael Miller cotton couture fabrics which I've made a few pieces using that series of fabrics for a commission as well as personal pieces. I don't have much to comment in terms of staff but my experience is that they're easy to talk to if you have questions. I always come here knowing exactly what I need to pick up so my interaction with them has been pretty minimal especially since I do most of my shopping online from they're site. Came here after a recommendation saying they had great and trendy fabrics of all types. The thing I didn't expect was how unwelcoming and unhelpful the staff would be. There were 6 people working from what I could tell. Not all were busy but no one could be bothered to say hello. I went ahead and looked around and had a project in mind, hoped to get a, " can I help with anything" from any of the people who passed working there so I could ask a question. I finally went up to the front and the woman I asked seemed annoyed that I was asking a question. Decided to get the black thread I needed and go. I was waiting in line to pay, again staff standing there but not asking to assist. And a customer near me said, you have to be vocal if you want to check out or they'll ignore you. Apparently I'm not the only one who knows how rude they are there. Not about to support that business, put the thread back and left. You'd think for a small business the staff would be friendly and excited to help. read more

I lived in San Francisco for many years. My widowed mother-in-law lived in Berkeley. My husband and I always went to Stonemountain Fabrics on the way to her house. It was my favorite fabric store in the Bay Area. It always had high-quality, natural-fiber fabrics at fair prices. After she died we moved to a suburb of Sacramento. This area has NO good fabric stores. NONE. Luckily, I found out that Stonemountain Fabrics sells online and has a fantastic selection and customer service. As just one example, I always order thread with my fabric because they are really good at color matching. In some ways, I prefer the online store to the physical store, it's just so easy to shop. Even though I now live two hours away, I am still a loyal customer. read more

I like the selection they have at this store! Who knew they can pack so much variety into one small store! I am a beginner sewist and I just love browsing fabric stores and touching everything. I like that they have the fancy stuff downstairs but also have discounted fabric upstairs, where I found a beautiful printed fabric that felt kind of silky, for 50% off. They also sold smaller scrap fabric pieces for quilters. I lined up and one of the workers helped measure and cut my fabric, then I paid without having to move to another counter. It was all very convenient. My only complaint is the parking situation. There is metered parking. read more

I had a big dilemma trying to find blue and yellow ribbon. The context of this was something for well the university nearby hence the colours. I called a nearby retailer and many lacked ribbons or even string. I was told to come here and in a blink I found what I was looking for! Once I stepped inside I was greeted with a smile and was asked if I needed help. I was guided throughout the store to see options. Not overwhelming options but just right to make a solid choice. Once I made my product decision you take the item to the front and if it needs to be measured everything is done there for you. You're shown the measurements and examples. The pricing is there too as well. They were kind to speak in metric system and that's lovely. Love it! Accepts both card and cash. I'm satisfied with the customer service and quick finds. read more

Everyone working in this store has been friendly and helpful during my visits over the past year. The spacious shop is a pleasure to visit with a large selection of haberdashery and fashion fabrics in addition to quilting cotton. They have an impressive selection of linen and other eco-friendly offerings such as bamboo, Tencel, and organic cotton fashion fabrics, and always have some interesting new designer deadstock to check out. My only complaint (minus one star) is that their retail markup is very high. Somehow, it is less expensive for individuals to purchase the Lady McElroy fabrics directly from UK (even considering the exchange rate, tariffs, and shipping) than from their shop in Berkeley USA. Much of the designer deadstock is very expensive as well and I don't understand why there is so much markup on excess fabric that designers are trying to get rid of - it seems that making your own clothes has become a luxury hobby. read more

I was thinking about taking up a sewing class and was looking into stores selling fabrics. I stumbled upon this store and was so amazed at the variety. There are tons of patterns and prints you can choose from. The patterns were so unique and beautiful that I ended up staying in the store longer than I had planned to. Best of all, the patterns are all neatly organized and labeled. They even had a table with flyers of different sewing classes around the area or sewing events, which I found to be very resourceful, especially for a prospective beginner like me. The staff was pretty friendly and pleasant. I asked questions about different fabrics and they were happy to answer all the questions I had. When I was decorating my art studio a senior staff member here gave me great feedback as I was trying to coordinate curtains with tablecloths. They have fantastic Japanese woven novelty fabrics, lovely batiks, colorful Guatemalan and related fabrics, African fabrics. They have stuff with trucks, with feathers, French fries and Frida. This is my favorite fabric store. I've been shopping here since 1985 when I first moved to the Bay Area. I feel so lucky to have a store like this nearby. It seems like most fabric stores cater to quilters. Here, however, there is a very large selection of apparel fabric of all fiber types year-round. They have the most colors of Bemberg rayon lining and cotton broadcloth I've seen anywhere and the most consistently extensive offering of knits from eco fibers to cotton spandex to rayon jersey to sweater knits and, occasionally, wool jersey. The upstairs section is a treasure trove. I've scored gorgeous Italian wool, half-price linen and one-of-a-kind designer samples for a bargain. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. I love receiving their email newsletters with the discount coupon. They also have a Facebook page and someone posts enticing videos of new arrivals which usually gets me rushing to the store before they're sold out of certain colors. read more

I squealed over the lovely selections of patterned fabrics. I'm very impressed with the organization here! There's a section that was organized by colors, a section organized by various holidays (Halloween and Christmas, for example. I LOVE the Halloween section and will be back to purchase fabrics from this section), and selections organized by fairy tales, school subjects, dogs, cats, fruits, sweets, etc. The store is well-lit, and has a very inviting vibe to it. There's also a second floor where they apparently have classes. Sure, it's pricier than Joann's, but the selections of patterned fabrics and organization is so wonderful, I can't wait to come back here for my sewing projects! read more
