Apron made from Piedmont Fabrics cotton.
Chris M.

Visited my favorite fabric store, Piedmont Fabrics, to buy some fabric to make an apron: so many beautiful cotton options! The ambience in this little shop is delightful. Lan, the owner, was helping several customers at once, yet the vibe was warm, friendly and relaxed.

Super cute fabric store on Piedmont Ave. Lan is super friendly and helpful and I'm so glad they just moved down the street. Happy to support a local female owned small business also. Had some friends visiting from SoCal during spring break. The daughter makes scrunchies and picked up some really cute fabric. Thanks Lan!

Wonderful assortment of fabrics, buttons and all things necessary for upholstery or sewing. The woman who was there, might have been the owner, was warm and wonderful, and so helpful. Shop local , support small businesses like this!! We'll be back again :)

Located at 4172 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, CA

This cute fabric shop on Piedmont Avenue is filled with beautiful quality fabrics for fashion sewing and quilting. as well as many notions and accessories -- including trims, buttons, zippers, Mettler and Gutermann threads, sewing machine needles, and other essentials. The owner, Lan, is very knowledgeable and helpful. I'm very pleased to re-discover Piedmont Fabric in its current location.

The owner is a perfect businesswoman: proud, helpful, knowledgeable, responsible, and passionate. I called ahead of time to make sure elastic was in stock, and she was already in the store although I was calling before they were technically open. Once I arrived, signage was posted reminding of social distancing and stating the max capacity in the store for everyone's safety. Even once two of us were let in at a time, she was clear of who was where in the store to help us distance. While we waited in line she came out to ask what we were looking for, and inside the store she had a stellar memory for what she had in stock if you asked where a particular print would be. The prints range from adorable to gorgeous, and clearly higher quality fabric than what you would get at Joann. She was efficient with sales, but took the time to explain how best to cut elastic to prevent fraying and stretch out supply when I asked. I and every person who has gotten a mask from me has adored the prints I was able to find here, and there is a vast array of quality, 100% cotton versus polyblends you would find elsewhere. I also generally like this neighborhood, and had a nice time chatting with the others in line. No one was impatient and grouchy, and we traded mask tips and praise for Piedmont Fabric. I am certainly coming back for other projects after covid.

The owner is super friendly! Its always good to walk into a place that makes you have a good customer service experience. During this pandemic I definitely go here doing my work break to make more masks for staff at my hospital! love this place for variety of fabrics and also higher end if you want quality. This place is not your typical Joanne Fabrics

Great local fabric store. Way smaller than Stonemountain and Daughter but they have a lovely selection. The one woman working there on Christmas Eve was friendly and helpful. We got a few fabrics and some samples as we are in the middle of shopping for a project. They have thread, notions, ribbon and other stuff like that. Looking forward to another visit soon.

They didn't have what I needed so they referred to another fabric store in Berkeley, where I was able to get what I needed.

Ask the Community - Piedmont Fabric

6/6/20 Can I come into your store to buy fabric?

Yes.

Do they carry ribbon and accessories like themed buttons or hot glue, alligator clips, felt circles, Velcro rolls?

Yes to the buttons, but no to the others. They focus on fabric for fashion sewing and quilting. They don't have a lot of craft supplies. They do have felt by the sheet, and a good selection.

Do they sell silk?

Yes!

I'm a total self-starter, but but eventually I needed someone to walk me through the hard things, explain techniques they've learned by applying them directly to my garments, and help me understand why a particular method works for a particular fabric or design. I was nervous walking into my first class. I worried I wouldn't fit in or I would feel out of place. That fear disappeared almost immediately. I was warmly welcomed by Christine Knobel, my first instructor, and by the other students. The community here is genuinely kind, diverse, and supportive. Apparently sewists are just really nice people (or at least the ones who come here are). I expected to improve my sewing skills, and I absolutely have, but what surprised me most was how meaningful the community became. In a world where most of my interactions happen through screens, spending time learning alongside real people has been incredibly grounding and joyful. I also love that they offer a fashion studies track, where you can learn from the very beginning, designing a sketch, all the way through creation. The classes are clearly structured to help you grow into a true sewist, not just complete a single project. Plus, they're always adding new classes, which keeps things fresh and exciting. This place has been a gift, both creatively and socially.

They have a beautiful small selection of fabrics, notions, and patterns but they really excel in classes. I decided to take a garment class (the lined jacket), not for help, but for community, and I'm so happy that I did! Christine was a great teacher and I do pick up some tricks! My goal this year was to grow my skills, so I decided to enroll in the Sketch to Garment class. It has been so fun working with Julie Ann and my fellow students. I was worried I'd struggle because I don't have sketching or design experience, but I love how easy and creative they made it! I'm looking forward to more. Come to The Sewing Room for community, creativity, and knowledge!

I'm mainly comparing to Sacramento (but to be fair, I go to sketchy areas so it's always cheap there). The staff itself is friendly enough. I see a lot of reviews about them being grumpy but it's really just one woman that is but hey she doesn't need to be bubbly and extroverted. She just did her job and that's fine. Not everyone wants to have a conversation with every customer and people just need to realize that. The place is pretty organized and I love that each spool of fabric has their price on it. It's very helpful. I'll probably come back when I'm in the area again and check out their clearance section which was good. Also their buttons are so cheap and I'll definitely but more of those.

While I came for the quilting cotton, I left with a completely different find... I purchased several yards of ripstop nylon for a future DIY stuff sack or lightweight outdoor pouch. The store is so, so large but honestly impressively organized, even with *huge* rolls of fabric everywhere. I loved that they have a public restroom (always a plus when fabric shopping turns into fabric hunting). The prices were excellent and the staff was helpful. If you're a crafter/sewist of any kind, this is a great place for a good deal!

The pandemic is over, and yet the store remains open by appointment only. This seems to be more for staff convenience over customer convenience. It was never a hotbed of activity, nor a super-spreader location..... so why it's no longer generally open is a mystery. The ugly & the reason I will never be back: 1. It took 4 months to get back my finished small holiday ornament. 2. The quote I got for the finishing work was in the range of $50. When I picked it up today, I was charged $90. Almost double. I never received a call to tell me they misquoted, with an option to cancel my order. They simply billed my credit card on file. I was shocked when I was handed my receipt, and when I expressed that, the staff member "informed" me that I must have been quoted old rates. Huh? A classic bait & switch. An unethical business practice that should be illegal if it's not. So...... buyer beware!
