Customer Service needs some serious help. If you are purchasing something small, like buttons or thread, be prepared to wait until everyone who walks in the store that wants fabric is serviced, even if you arrived before them. Smaller purchase = spending less money = not a priority = longer wait. The selection of buttons is very small, and many of the tubes of buttons are down to the last one and haven't been replaced. Strangest of all his the fact that the proprietor, despite selling fabric, doesn't seem to know her fabrics. I brought in a jumper for my daughter, and she kept arguing with me that it was 100% cotton. I explained that it was actually mostly polyester, she said I was wrong. We looked at the tag -- 95% polyester. We are all about supporting small local businesses, but this one could really use some help :/ read more

They didn't have what I needed so they referred to another fabric store in Berkeley, where I was able to get what I needed.

If you want to get advice from seasoned sewers who know their materials and know all the potholes from experience, this is the place to go. While it is a small shop that appears to have a small selection, they worked with me until I found something suitable for my project. My gut feeling is that these women who run the store have great knowledge about their crafts, I wish I had known years ago in order to learn from them. Craftspeople like them are treasures of the East Bay and beyond. Keep textile crafts, alive, and go here. read more

The owner is a perfect businesswoman: proud, helpful, knowledgeable, responsible, and passionate. I called ahead of time to make sure elastic was in stock, and she was already in the store although I was calling before they were technically open. Once I arrived, signage was posted reminding of social distancing and stating the max capacity in the store for everyone's safety. Even once two of us were let in at a time, she was clear of who was where in the store to help us distance. While we waited in line she came out to ask what we were looking for, and inside the store she had a stellar memory for what she had in stock if you asked where a particular print would be. The prints range from adorable to gorgeous, and clearly higher quality fabric than what you would get at Joann. She was efficient with sales, but took the time to explain how best to cut elastic to prevent fraying and stretch out supply when I asked. I and every person who has gotten a mask from me has adored the prints I was able to find here, and there is a vast array of quality, 100% cotton versus polyblends you would find elsewhere. I also generally like this neighborhood, and had a nice time chatting with the others in line. No one was impatient and grouchy, and we traded mask tips and praise for Piedmont Fabric. I am certainly coming back for other projects after covid. read more

Great local fabric store. Way smaller than Stonemountain and Daughter but they have a lovely selection. The one woman working there on Christmas Eve was friendly and helpful. Small fabric store with pricey fabric but high quality so you are getting what you paid for. The store is small in square footage so the owner doesn't have a ton of fabric, but she's able to pack a lot of relevant stuff into that small space. She had everything that I was looking for and even had some sewing notions that no other fabric store had. She has cottons with prints ranging from novel to whimsical to traditional to classic. The owner is a very nice lady, helpful and makes good suggestions. The sign out front says she only lets 1 customer at a time into the store during Covid, but she let 3 of us in and there definitely is enough space to social distance with only 3 customers in the store. read more

After struggling to find what I needed at the local JoAnn's, I found this small gem of a place and decided to try and see if I could get some fun new prints for my next batch of masks. Piedmont Fabric did not disappoint. Lan, the sweet soul behind the counter, was so knowledgeable, kind, and most importantly patient whilst I perused her selection of cute and vibrant fabrics. Because of the shop's size and the guidelines currently in place due to Covid-19 Social Distancing regulations I was the only customer in the store with Lan, and I felt so comfortable shopping while she gently asked the next customer to wait a few more minutes until I was finished. Best fabric store in the Bay Area and I've been to them all. Lan has an amazing eye for unique and quality products. The knits I've bought here haven't pilled after years of wear! There is a lot of fabric in this space, despite its small stature. Fabrics range from designer deadstock (Valentino ribbed knit!!) to garment staples. There's also a beautiful selection of quilting cottons. Lan and her assistants are so helpful and kind as well, I love talking through the sewing process with them and ask for advice. They'll always cheer your projects if you come in wearing them. read more

Reading all the reviews, I am surprised to learn that Piedmont Fabric is among the best local fabric stores in the East Bay and even Bay Area. What I can say from my own direct experience is that the customer service here is awesome. I have had several 'out-of-the-norm' requests -- fabric for a computer case, and phone sleeve, selecting material for custom made apparel, and help with a rare framed oriental carpet fragment. In the latter case, Lan, the owner, took the time to help me measure velcro fasteners, and even cut them for me, help me position them on the fabric mount, prepare the velcro, and attach to the frame and carpet backing, and finally position the backing with the carpet onto the frame. It took about 40 minutes and there was no charge for any of that. The cost for the additional materials I bought plus the Velcro was around $10. That's why we shop and buy local. And there is no better example of this than Lan's Piedmont Fabric. I've really enjoyed working with Lan and selecting fabric from her notable and tasteful collection. My friend sewed her Bruce Lee patch on her backpack and gets complimented ALL the time! _____________________________________________ Original review follows: They have only been in business for 2 1/2 months but they have already won me over! I haven't sewn for awhile.....okay, okay since I was in my 20's. I'm not sure I even know how to sew anymore but I am TOTALLY INSPIRED to try again after going to this store. As soon as I walked in the store I was giving the warmest welcome from the staff. I was totally in 7th heaven taking in all the rainbows of color from the fabrics, ribbons, buttons and trims. Although the store seems small it has EVERYTHING for the newbie to expert seamstress/seamster (er, is there such a word?) Needles, sewing boxes, bobbins, facing material, dozens and dozens of trim from strings of coins to those colored balls, fancy gold stuff, fuzzy stuff, feathery stuff, sparkly stuff. Everything for a cave person to a soccer mom to royalty to the Pope.....I'm not kidding, I swear (uh, I guess I shouldn't use the word, "Pope," in the same sentence as "swear.") They have notions like iron- on patches, iron- on pocket replacements (our household needs a carton of those), to dozens of other items that I could have easily have bought......yes our clothes are all falling apart and in need of repair. And buttons from everyday plain and round to cutesy ducky, girly stuff, elaborate gold or silver, giant to teeny tiny and metal macho guy to the buttons of your dreams and/or nightmares! I was thinking in the back of my big head/puny brain what articles of clothing I could replace the boring (yawn) buttons with. Yes, I did buy a Bruce Lee patch along with those labels that say, "Made with Love By" for my handy crafty friends, along with several items mentioned in the review. Please support this wonderful new business. The people who run it used to work at the late great Poppy's (RIP). With COVID-19 I've taken up a new hobby-sewing! I was so happy to find this gem of a fabric store on yelp and ventured on a Saturday afternoon to check it out. Given the size of the shop, only about 2 customers are allowed at a time-understandable given our current pandemic climate and enforcing 6 ft distancing, so kudos to the owner for keeping us all safe. Love the selection of fabrics so much. It was challenging to narrow it down to the 4 I settled on for misc projects I have going on when I can find the time to sew. Exceptional fabrics fill this tiny store from wall to wall. Yeah some may be a little pricier than those big hobby stores - but this place almost gives shopping for fabric a boutique feel. Italian denim? Check. Beautiful wools ? Yes. They also have felt and such for all your school / Halloween costume needs. Also, I never thought I would fall in love with buttons, but they have gorgeous buttons too - I think I lost myself by the buttons for a few minutes being inspired (or being weird and running my hands through the button hearing them clink, but I didnt do that). It's a cute store, but the parking can be a little crazy - and at $2/hr. Whatever it takes, come check this place out. Just give yourself enough time to really touch / feel / look at the fabric, and if u bring coffee or a drink with you set it down at the counter.... Cheers !! read more

Ugh. Ugh. UGH. This place upsets me. Why does all the fabric they carry have to be so goddamn pretty that every time I step in here I struggle with the urge to empty my bank account on the spot? Why is everyone who works here so goddamn nice? Why is it that by looking at all the utterly fabulous prints in stock, I never fail to get a fully rejuvenated enthusiasm for sewing every time I stop by? It's upsetting, I tell you. Makes me sick, in a wonderful, wonderful way. In all honesty, if you're looking for fashion fabric, go here. It fills a valuable niche by being: a) not as crafty/quilt-y as Stonemountain (I loved your classes, but I could not, in all good conscience, call your store hip); b) not as pricey and snooty as Britex; c) not as disorganized and hit-or-miss as Discount Fabrics; and d) not as utterly crappy for fashion fabric as Joann's. read more
