    Lovely and Talented Teacher, Jennifer!
    Zzzz O.

Kid: I love all my teachers at the sewing room. I have a lot of fun and really like Jennifer, my teacher, and the owner and her dog, whose name is Magic. I made some pretty cool things for my American Girl dolls and one thing I started won two ribbons at the Alameda County Fair! I just finished a reversible cape for myself that has a burgundy frog clasp. It's gold and I can't believe Jennifer helped me make a pattern from scratch! Yesterday, we had a real fashion designer come in! Mom: This class is worth every penny! Jennifer is so talented yet humble! She gently teaches her students confidence and life-skills. She is an amazing role-model for my daughter. My daughter has had two other patient and wonderful teachers, both named Maria, who are equally as lovely and creative, and fantastic role-models. The Sewing Room is highly recommended to anyone of all ages! Jennifer sells her own pattern designs in her beautiful studio. She also sells beautiful fabric and fantastic sewing machines. She really has an exquisite eye for beauty and design. I really would like to take a class as well!

Recently participated in a Zoom-hosted Surgical Mask sew along with other home based sewers and Jennifer of the Sewing Room. The Zoom format was fantastic! Jennifer walked everyone through each step of two mask making tutorials with clear visual and descriptive instructions and answered any questions along the way. The Zoom format was a great way to build sewing time into an otherwise busy schedule and connect with others even though we were all in different places. Highly recommend any Zoom sewing experiences with The Sewing Room, or any sewing instruction opportunities with Jennifer!

Fitting Workshop with a fashion expert

I took an awesome sewing class with Jennifer! The fitting workshop was so valuable. Personalized, hands on lessons in how to alter armholes and busts to improve the fit of three different garments I had sewed up: a denim jacket, button down shirt and Tshirt. I feel empowered! She was patient and empathic and excited about clothes. I really enjoyed it.

My daughter's been taking sewing classes from The Sewing Room and under Jennifer's tutelage - and in a short time frame - my 9yo has sewed her own beautiful shirt, tote bag, and is working on a pair of shorts! She's really learning a lot and Jennifer is patient and a great teacher! I highly recommend these classes as sewing is a lost art and Jennifer makes learning to sew fun and easy! We couldn't be more pleased with the instruction and results. Highly recommend.

The pandemic is over, and yet the store remains open by appointment only. This seems to be more for staff convenience over customer convenience. It was never a hotbed of activity, nor a super-spreader location..... so why it's no longer generally open is a mystery. The ugly & the reason I will never be back: 1. It took 4 months to get back my finished small holiday ornament. 2. The quote I got for the finishing work was in the range of $50. When I picked it up today, I was charged $90. Almost double. I never received a call to tell me they misquoted, with an option to cancel my order. They simply billed my credit card on file. I was shocked when I was handed my receipt, and when I expressed that, the staff member "informed" me that I must have been quoted old rates. Huh? A classic bait & switch. An unethical business practice that should be illegal if it's not. So...... buyer beware!

I accepted that all the…read moresmaller Mom & Pops art supplies stores have been overtaken by Michaels & that quality arts & crafts are no longer available to buy locally, but now it seems like Michaels has done something crazy. I filled up my cart today with hundreds of $$$ of supplies - as I tend to do once or twice a year... and headed to the check-out. There were a group of 5 employees chatting about life behind the registers, but none of them were helping customers check out. It was 100% self-checkout. I am handicapped & asked for help, but they all told me they were not allowed to help any customers check out unless the customer was paying in cash. I was surprised. I went ahead and paid for everything, then asked for a bag - which they always supplied to shoppers in the past. I would definitely need a bag to take everything in my cart with me to my car. They told me that they don't have any bags for customers any more. I asked if I could pay for a bag & they said they didn't have any bags - they girl just said "We're Out!". I was just shocked at the lack of customer service and this new policy where they are not allowed to help any customers. I will also add that when I first arrived at the store, I asked three different employees where a product was that I was looking to purchase. They all said, "Oh yeah, we carry that", just look around the back corner".. or they would point "just go in that direction". I never found the product & got tired of asking the employees who seemed to make it their 'job' to not help anyone. The only people who seemed to have any sense were the two women in the framing department. They actually were kind & professional & wanted to help me find the product I was looking for, but they did not know where the product was, nor if the store carried it because they were just focused on framing art and photos. All the employees were polite when they talked to me, all friendly conversations. I really blame the corporation - as it seems that they do not care for their employees. When cashiers are replaced by customers doing their own 'check out', they will soon no longer hire cashiers/employees, and the current employees will lose their jobs. I see this happening everywhere & the unemployment rate is climbing along with the price of basic food, etc.. shame on Michaels. I will be looking to find another arts & crafts store. Very disappointed. I wonder if all the Michaels stores have this new policy of not helping customers - even handicapped customers with checkout? Also - no bags? They could have put a sign at the front of the building announcing that customers need to bring their own bags - but no - they just embarrass customers by letting them find out after they have filled their shopping carts & paid for a zillion items & have no way to bring them out of the store. I woudn't be surprised if the next time I walked in there, the only employees were a couple AI robots.
