I'm trying to go green so instead of buying yearly Christmas wrapping paper, I thought I would make fabric Christmas sacks to be recycled every year with the family. Entering this warehouse, I knew better than to wander around aimlessly, so i asked for help immediately. A very kind sales lady showed me all my choices in all the different rooms. After a great visit to the San Francisco location of Discount Fabrics, I decided to check out the Berkeley Discount Fabrics too. This spot feels newer and does not seem to have as much variety/inventory, but it's peaceful and clean! I arrived just before closing but still had time to browse. As the website stated, they don't carry much quilting cotton here but there's a ton of other types of fabric and materials and I bought some vinyl for future sewing projects like pouches and pencil cases. Prices are excellent, the service was good considering I arrived fairly close to closing time, and there's a free public parking lot right in front! read more

We used to occasionally pop our heads in when this place was on San Pablo. Their building was run down and the neighborhood also took a dip when the Walgreens across the intersection closed. So I was worried when they closed and thrilled when they reopened on the shoreline. Fabric stores are getting hard to find and we need more of them. We stopped by the other day to check out if they had felt. They did but the selection was a bit spotty. It's sometimes hard to tell what the composition of the fabric is and while they have a looooot of fabric, finding exactly what you want is a bit hit and miss. Still, I want them to stick around. They have a limited selection of fabrics. I use to go the store on Ashby because it was near my workplace and when I needed some supplies, I decided to drop by their new location. I think there was more of a selection at the old Ashby store even thought this warehouse seems bigger. Everything is very organized. I just think the selection is somewhat limited. Not only is this place a gym, it has great prices. Especially since they have a lot of African prints as well. Once we got here, he stepped in, and you don't notice how large the place is. We found leather that we've never seen before fabric of different kinds, and all sorts of patterns as well. So the week before Halloween, i had been calling around to look for brown fur for an Ewok costume. I had gotten down to calling the Berkeley location for this store and talked to the owned Grandchild, i believe. Very nice and helpful, but i didnt get their name. They checked for my requested fur and told me that this location didnt have it but to call the SF store and see if they do, since the store owner drives back n forth from both spots daily. I quickly followed through and got on the line with a person named Shelly in the SF store. Shelly is my hero of this review. They were able to find the fur im looking for and gave me a quick estimate of how much it is per yard. It was a bit out of buget, but i had to get this fabric. I had to end the call but i was gonna make arrangements to call back and have the fur held for me when i got a call back from the shop instead, about 20ish mins after the last call. It was Shelly on the line. Not only did they google what ewoks look like to make sure they had the right picture in their mind, but they confirmed they had fur that was close to the source and for a price that was waaaay below what i was expecting to pay! As soon as they told me, i gave them my info and that ill be at the Berkeley store that weekend to pick up. The whole experience was wonderful, the people are amazing, Shelly from the SF store is my MVP and the prices came in clutch. Ill def be getting my fabric from here from now on! read more

Today, is my first day there, my friend recommend that store. My daughter start learning how to sew. But I don't just want to shop in regular retail store like Joan.... fabrics. So make a trip to berkeley today to check out this store. This store is very clean. I found it is pretty easy to go around to look for fabric. I think other people (yelper) said hard to find things. Ok, it might be slightly more difficult than those retailer fabric store. But I found there are a lot of special fabrics especially for making evening dress. My daughter and I got some batik print fabric $4.69 per yard, they already pre-cut to 1.5 yard of 3 yards. And today, has 25% off on those(cotton one). But this store don't have regular cotton plain color fabrics (or I did not see it). It is ok, because those common color one, you could easily find in Walmart or other store. Decent fabrics, but not really all that discounted, and the selections aren't as large as I had anticipated. I'm especially underwhelmed with the costume fabric and printed cotton selections, as there are not that many of them. Lighting is also kind of dim--it's kind of like this warehouse, a bit dusty and run-down too. Sure, the center and the front of the store is bright, but once you get to the sides of the store, with only windows filtering in sunlight from the streets outside, the lighting is kind of dark, and makes it a little hard to see the fabrics, especially when the giant rolls of fabric are just stacked on top of each other. TIP: If you ask for a sample swatch of a fabric that you'd like to take with you for free, they'll cut it for you. That's pretty nice. read more

Angry. And honestly offended. I drove for an hour in rush hour traffic and arrived into the store before they closed only to be told after I had shopped that they wouldn't be serving me. Why? Because 'It is 6pm now and we all want to go home.' Seriously? I guess they don't serve all their inside customers after their doors close? This was yet another great find for fabric. This store was well organized and the staff was super nice. They laughed and joked with each other as well as the customers. I found a huge selection of faux leather at amazing prices and they had real leather and lamb skins at unbelievably low prices. I have a purse project in mind and if it works out, I plan to buy a lot more of the faux leather the next time I come and maybe even get some of the real stuff. I found that their prices are very reasonable and most importantly there was no chemical fabric smell, so I took my time and searched through everything. I specifically went there for their collection of African fabrics, but while they were nice, the fabric was African print on regular cotton and I was looking for the traditional waxed African fabric, so I didn't buy any, but I got other stuff. They also had an amazing selection of specialty and upholstery fabric. One woman asked for a sample piece so she could take it home and they happily obliged her, many chain stores will not do that, if they do, they charge you for it. DISCOUNT FABRICS is located on a street that is two blocks west of Fourth Street. Fourth Street is a busy shopping area that includes the legendary Peet's Coffee, the equally legendary Bette's Oceanview Diner, and the legendary Spenger's (which, unfortunately, has closed). Discount Fabrics consists of two huge rooms, each with a floorspace of about 50 feet x 50 feet. Most of the merchandise takes the form of fabrics that comes in rolls, where each roll is about four feet long. The customer takes the roll over to the front counter, and the clerk uses scissors for cutting off the length of this 4-foot wide cloth that the customer wants. WHAT I BOUGHT TODAY. My shopping mission (Feb. 26, 2021) was to buy fabric, where one side was covered with gray-colored faux fur. My goal was to cut many strips from this faux fur, and attach them all to a gray-colored long sleeve shirt, thereby making a costume based on the ragged and torn furry shirt worn by the bridgekeeper, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The clerk was friendly, attentive, and helpful. I arrived ten minutes before opening time. The clerk came to the glass door, but did not open the door. She held up both hands with the fingers all displayed, meaning that I needed to wait for only ten minutes more. After I bought my fabric, I went outside and put it into my car, and then I returned to the store. I asked if I could take notes about all of the merchandise so that I could write a YELP review. The clerk answered, "Yes." (I plan to post a photograph of me wearing the bridgekeeper costume, as soon as I make the costume and pose near a bridge in a remote forest.) LOVE this place! Will drive from South Bay to shop here! If you're a neatnik who needs a fabric store that is ultra organized by fabric content, color and season, this is so not the place for you. If you are an artsy person who loves the thrill of hunting through hundreds of rolls of not-what-you-need to find that perfect fabric for you with just enough on the roll to get the 20% discount for taking everything on the roll, then this is the place for you! Or if you're just looking for inspiritation, strolling through their industrial height aisles is just the thing! I spent $22 for 15 yards of fabric, much of it silk, this time around. Previosuly I've purchased as many as 40 yards of fabric here for space design. I will try to upload a picture of the design, but the photos were not the best quality so I don;t know if it will work. My silicon valley friends always marvel at how much I get for how little here. I have alwasy found what I needed. The store is a bit dusty at times and it's in a rather busy industrialish area. It can appear closed, as in shut down, from the outside, but don't be disuaded. Parking is best if you get there before 4pm, when the street just outside becomes no parking for rush hour. read more

Agree with the other reviewers: this place is cheaper than going to a regular fabric store, but still not a smokin' bargain. You won't find much in the way of dirt cheap $1/yard fabric here. I think the best deals are the home decorator fabrics. These usually go for $20+ a yard, but here you can get them for $8-$15/yard. So, maybe about the same prices as Jo-Ann's on sale. Their notions are overpriced compared to Wal-Mart or even Jo-Ann's on sale. I got some straight pins on sale and they were still more expensive than Jo-Ann's (exact same brand and style). I ended up buying half a yard of pink fabric with the word "BITCH" printed all over it. It was a heavy weight cotton and it was $10/yard. A curious shopper asked me politely what I was making with the bitch fabric and I told her a tote bag for my female dog. read more

A good place for fabrics that no one else carries. This place is where overstocked fabrics go to die. They have a great selection but good luck trying to find it or dig it out. Upholstery, rugs, synthetics, curtains, and other wacky material in bulk. Absolutely no customer service. You want it, you have to use your own muscle to get it. The women that work here are no nonsense. They are all about 4 feet tall and come from either Latin America, or Asia. The typical greeting is, "What you want?" Ha! I kinda liked it because I got to respond, "A hot girl, and a million dollars!" ........ my response was met with a frown and a look of, "stupid gringo, this is a fabric store." Anyway, I bought ripstop nylon here for a project, while every other store in the East Bay didn't carry it. Therefore, I like it here even though their service sucks and the ladies are mean. You walk around the store, select which fabric you want, then bring it to the counter and the ladies will measure, cut the fabric for you, and ring you up. Some of the fabric is already discounted, otherwise, if you are a student, you get a 10% discount with valid photo ID. The price per yard for each fabric is conveniently tagged/written on each fabric roll. The store is very easy to navigate, and the ladies at the counter sweetly answer any questions you may have. My mom was in town and I wanted to introduce her to the wonderful world of Berkeley fabric stores. The best fabric stores in the Bay Area are in Berkeley, hands down. We headed to Discount Fabrics and quickly found parking in the alley adjacent to the front door. Yesssssuh. Anyways, this is one of those spots where you have to dig a little to find something fabulous. I love those kind of spots. My mother was on the hunt for outdoor fabric to redo all of her cushions on her chaise loungers and five chairs. We found two rolls (16 yards) for $12.95 a yard. HOLY CRAP, DUDE. Yeah. I know. Outdoor fabric is usually $25.00 and up a yard. I bought some beautiful African wax cloth. Just so many good options. Highly recommend, especially you are in the treasure hunting/bargain hunting type of mood. PROTIP: You should definitely come here the day after having surgery so that you have to be wheeled around in one of those old timey desk chairs that the employees have to provide you so you don't faint on them. read more

Great selection of fabric. Not so much variety in vinyls or durable upholstery. They have a lot of beautiful trim, but not basic black pom poms. I was also looking for sequined garland in yellow, orange or turquoise, which they also didn't have. Prices were average to overpriced, nothing that I would call discounted. A small ziplock size bag of random ubiquitous trim remnant will run you $10+. That being said, I was moreso disappointed in the customer service. There were 2 ladies working Saturday 1/2. Both behind the counter talking to each other while the store was full of people. Neither greeted people as they walked in. I approached the counter several times asking for items, only to be loosely pointed into a general "it's over there" direction. The older lady never left the counter. The younger one went back and forth returning rolls of fabric with the efficiency of a sloth. My attempt to invite her expertise failed miserably as she was clearly not interested in engaging customers. Another lady made one sided small talk, noting that she typically would drive to SF for the selection. The workers flat response was "it's the same". Well, as one who has been known to come up with an excuse for a road trip will tell you, the customer service experience means as much, if not more than the product. A great salesperson/customer relations representative is one that you can feel comfortable asking advice and offer alternatives. Rather than being given a monotone "this is all we have" response, the workers should have invited me to see the other great things in stock. The worst that could happen is I say no thanks, but I would appreciate the effort to help me finish my project. That being said, I don't plan on making any special trips here. Holy houndstooth! I discovered Discount Fabrics a while ago when I bought a sewing machine and was on the hunt for quality fabrics at great prices. This place has all of the best fabrics and notions at the best prices in the area. The only spot that comes close to their caliber of deals is their sister shop in SF, but I just don't have time for all that. I prefer the convenient location (and available parking spots) that the Berkeley joint offers. They have an enormous selection that sprawls multiple rooms and friendly staff on hand to help you with any resources you may need to start crafting your next fabulous project.
