This store is iconic! A must-visit when in SF. It is the place in the Bay Area for quality and unique fabrics, buttons, notions, etc. On top of their great selection, their staff is wonderful and knowledgeable. They answer my many questions and always point me in the right direction or show me something super special that they just got in. I can't recommend Britex enough.

Anyone else remember Plant Warehouse? It was this dinky place in Pacific Heights with overpriced waxy green things. Literally no reason to buy them except to "support local" - not when the plant station over at Home Depot or what have you had the exact same thing. Oh yes, however, there was one other reason: the free wine, cheese, and chocolate platter. The smart owners of Plant Warehouse knew their selection was only okay, so they plied money from customers by first getting them sauced. I always left with some little potted thing, if for no other reason to thank them for the afternoon buzz. I can hear you asking now: what in the heck does this have to do with Britex? Let me give it to you plain, Britex: your fabrics are astoundingly overpriced AND your service sucks. Today I came in for O rings, which I use often in harness making. The women downstairs with the fabrics were polite enough but didn't offer to help even though no one else was browsing. Upstairs I find my O rings and go to grab them in a box, the lady nearby barks: "I'll take it out... [me not hearing her] I'LL TAKE IT OUT." I guess theft in SF has gotten so bad that criminals are hitting up the fabric stores for purse and belt attachments. Jesus H., lady. I'm not going to wander off with your O rings. I asked if she had a size bigger and she said, "What you see is what we got, maybe try the hardware store?" It all just rubbed me the wrong way. At $3.50 per piece, I only bought two on a credit card. The woman downstairs of course was like, "You don't have cash??" Listen Britex, we really shouldn't be having this disagreement for $7. I counted four people working that day, and you're definitely not moving enough product to pay one of them minimum wage. The % the credit card company should not be your chief concern, and alienating me over it will surely send me back to the other stores next time. I'm giving four stars here because many fabrics Britex carries are really unique and lovely, and this store is a legacy in San Francisco fashion and interior decorating. I don't want it to go away. But at the price you charge, Britex, you should be giving me massages, Waldorf salads, and doing my taxes for a $295 yard of sequin (no really, I actually saw this). Concierge service, you know? Make it fancy.

Ask the Community - Britex Fabrics

    Do they dye fabrics?

No, they do not dye fabrics. They also do not carry fabric dyes.

    Do they carry embroidery floss?

Yes, they still carry embroidery floss.

Do you carry Off-White naughahide upholstery material?

Wow! I haven't even SEEN naugahyde in a while, let alone white naugahyde. In the past they have had white and off-white faux leathers and vinyls, so I would email them to see if they have any currently. Good Luck!

I'm mainly comparing to Sacramento (but to be fair, I go to sketchy areas so it's always cheap there). The staff itself is friendly enough. I see a lot of reviews about them being grumpy but it's really just one woman that is but hey she doesn't need to be bubbly and extroverted. She just did her job and that's fine. Not everyone wants to have a conversation with every customer and people just need to realize that. The place is pretty organized and I love that each spool of fabric has their price on it. It's very helpful. I'll probably come back when I'm in the area again and check out their clearance section which was good. Also their buttons are so cheap and I'll definitely but more of those.

While I came for the quilting cotton, I left with a completely different find... I purchased several yards of ripstop nylon for a future DIY stuff sack or lightweight outdoor pouch. The store is so, so large but honestly impressively organized, even with *huge* rolls of fabric everywhere. I loved that they have a public restroom (always a plus when fabric shopping turns into fabric hunting). The prices were excellent and the staff was helpful. If you're a crafter/sewist of any kind, this is a great place for a good deal!

Drove over to fabrix on a Monday and it happened to be the Clement street fair at the exact same time, luckily I found parking really quickly and proceeded to go inside to find my felt and embroidery supplies for the felt ornaments I'd been wanting to make for Christmas this year. I had NO clue what I was looking for and I'm so grateful to the staff for helping me find everything and being patient with me throughout the whole process. It was quiet in the shop at first but quickly became busy, but I honestly didn't mind waiting in line for my turn because the staff gave the same amount of time to me as they did to everyone in front of me in line. I was kind of surprised at how inexpensive the whole purchase was, after she showed me my total, because I hadn't checked the prices of anything. Most of the fabrics was labeled with a price but it's one of those stores that has so much inventory that it's not easy to see the prices of everything if you're someone like me with awful vision and a stubbornness not to get glasses Anyway, I highly recommend this local fabric store!! It's perfect for basically all of your fabric crafting needs!!

I'm a total self-starter, but but eventually I needed someone to walk me through the hard things, explain techniques they've learned by applying them directly to my garments, and help me understand why a particular method works for a particular fabric or design. I was nervous walking into my first class. I worried I wouldn't fit in or I would feel out of place. That fear disappeared almost immediately. I was warmly welcomed by Christine Knobel, my first instructor, and by the other students. The community here is genuinely kind, diverse, and supportive. Apparently sewists are just really nice people (or at least the ones who come here are). I expected to improve my sewing skills, and I absolutely have, but what surprised me most was how meaningful the community became. In a world where most of my interactions happen through screens, spending time learning alongside real people has been incredibly grounding and joyful. I also love that they offer a fashion studies track, where you can learn from the very beginning, designing a sketch, all the way through creation. The classes are clearly structured to help you grow into a true sewist, not just complete a single project. Plus, they're always adding new classes, which keeps things fresh and exciting. This place has been a gift, both creatively and socially.
