Very cute store! Helpful staff. Nice example projects made with yarns they carry. Great location near the Panhandle on Haight. I wish they had a sale section. read more

I don't usually leave reviews but I was really taken aback by my experience at this store. The store itself is very cute and in such a great location but the customer service was horrible! I'm a beginner knitter and was already overwhelmed. I asked the person at the cash register a question and they laughed at me like I was dumb. Truly so rude and not welcoming at all. I get people have bad days but wow read more

Popped inside this cute yarn shop for the first time to get some clarity on a new project I wanted to start and hopefully purchase some yarn and needles. I unfortunately had the WORST customer service from the cashier which entirely turned me off from wanting to buy anything. It seemed as though my questions were bothering the cashier and I received a very hostile attitude from them overall in our conversation; to be frank, it left me wanting to run and hide (to preface--I have never ever felt this way before shopping in the city)! I ended up leaving that store feeling quite terrible about myself and pretty stupid for asking anything at all. While I thought that a neighborhood yarn shop would be the perfect place to get recommendations and advice as a newer knitter, this store is apparently not the place for that. It's a shame, too, since the products looked beautiful. Will probably not come back. read more

I'm not much of a knitter myself, but I have nothing but fond memories of knitting with my great aunt and grandmother as a kid in Wales. My sister and I would excitedly pick out our yarns and knit in front of the TV (my grandmother was usually watching Baywatch :)) in between sips of over-sugared tea. I gave up knitting years ago - but my sister continues to have a fervent passion for it. It's her ultimate way to relax and she regularly produces beautiful pieces of work. Stepping inside Firebird Yarns reminded my of my childhood in Wales and my sister. Both beautiful. I came across Firebird Yarns a number of weeks ago - when enjoying a lovely walk down Haight Street. I was beckoned into this charming store by their colorful yarns, and an adorable faux fireplace display complete with twinkling lights and plush sheep slippers. Firebird Yarns specializes in hand-dyed animal fibers. When you enter this adorable craft haven - you can't help but be smitten by their impressive selection of yarns, many of which are locally dyed. Their yarn isn't cheap, but you're paying for quality product - dyed with love. The staff are also exceptional here. They're helpful without being pushy or overbearing. Their staff are yarn/craft enthusiasts and they are eager to help others on their knitting/craft journey - whether one is a novice or an experienced pro. If you're looking for some additional assistance when it comes to knitting or crocheting projects - be sure to check out their Stitch Doctor drop-in classes - https://firebirdyarns.com/pages/classes. There are many wonderful stores that have left Haight Street and I long for them to return, but it's magical additions like Firebird Yarns that remind me - that San Francisco is ever changing - and some changes are truly knit with joy and goodness. Trust. read more

I was traveling and didn't bring a project. I stopped by, the person (sorry I didn't get your name) not only helped me choose yarn, he even printed out the pattern for me. Truly amazing they went the extra mile. It was worth the $30 uber just to shop here! Thanks again and I hope to stop by again next time I'm in the area! read more

Super nice yarn selection! The people working there were helpful and very friendly. Definitely worth stopping by.

Great selection of yarn, small selection of needles but they do have some (near the register). They also have a winder and I heard them helping someone while I was checking out so they definitely help folks use this. My son was helping me find the colors for some Pokemon amigurumi he wants me to make (of course in shiny colors) so he wanted allll the yarn. I appreciated that they had some swatches made up of the yarns to show what they could look like. One thing that would level this up even more is having some example starter patterns associated with the different areas for folks who want to try making something from the beautiful multi-color yarn. I'm still effectively a newbie when it comes to fiber so I was somewhat overwhelmed with the possibilities. read more

Wonderful and very helpful people. Great choice of yarns and needles. Love all the local indie dyers yarns and the ability to use their ball winder read more

Although I've made the odd (really odd) scarf, I consider myself a rank beginner. Nic was the epitome of a helpful/not condescending adviser. I'm definitely going to check out the twice-monthly Sunday office hours -- such a great idea for those questions YouTube just can't answer! read more

The employees here are so friendly and helpful. They assisted me in finding this gorgeous UV reactive yarn, and even suggested a skill level appropriate pattern for me to make with it. Five stars! Would visit again! read more

Terrific yarn store with really nice salespeople. I worked with Stitch Doctor Leah one Sunday afternoon and I felt so good after our session. Oftentimes I've gone to yarn stores where the salespeople can take on a bad attitude, which does not make me want to go back to the store, let alone knit. What a sweet difference here. I am grateful and I'll be back! read more

I'm so glad to have Firebird Yarns in my neighborhood! They have a wonderful selection of nice quality yarns and the staff has always been helpful with answering my questions. They do "stitch doctor" office hours on the first and third Sunday of the month too. read more

I don't know what it is, but I've been in more than one local yarn store that provided lackluster (and sometimes downright poor) customer experiences. Firebird is not that, not even close. Every time I go there, there's someone willing to help me, and the advice they provide is always helpful. The store is bright, clean, and highly organized. They specialize in hand-dyed animal fibers, and I'm especially wowed by their inventory of sock/fingering yarns. They do tend to run on the pricier side, but honestly, they carry so much local yarn and I find so much here that I can't find anywhere else that I'm willing to pay those prices, especially with their customer service. Really hope they stick around! read more

Beautiful and affirming store for everyone! I love a store with a big range of color, and this one is the best in the Bay. Be sure to squeeze the Sea Change Fiber and pick up a sweet pinup! read more

This yarn store had a pretty wide variety of yarn and lots of great notions. One of the things I loved was their project bags; I got one with a picture of a chicken knitting on top of a pile of yarn. They had a couple different types of cascade yarn which is my go to. When I checked out, the cashier went the extra mile and double checked the dye lots and even went into the back to get yarn from the same dye lot. I cannot thank them enough! read more

Absolutely love the staff and selection at Firebird Yarns! There's always such an incredible variety of yarns and you can tell how excited everyone is when they're about to drop a new product line or colorway! Got to visit more recently during the 2025 Bay Area Yarn Crawl, and it only reinforced how this shop is my favorite yarn store in the Bay Area. So many colors and textures to choose from, amazing stickers n notions, and their branded pins and tote bags are loud and proud! Also, love that they have so mini skeins to choose from when you just want a tiny yarn treat! read more

Firebird Yarns is my favorite local yarn shop! I'm an intermediate knitter and wanted to try some projects with hand-dyed yarns, so I've gone in several times to check out their selection. They have absolutely GORGEOUS colorways, and their employees are exceptionally helpful and lovely to talk to! They've helped me with everything from choosing the right kind of yarn for my projects, to teaching me how to wind skeins into cakes. Whenever I go in, I feel so inspired and supported in my projects, and the staff really makes it special. I don't know how to spell their names correctly so I'm really sorry for any misspellings, but to Katherine, Leanne, Nick, and Zappa - you all are such amazing people who make fiber arts more accessible to the community. Thank you for all that you do! read more

I just visited Firebird Yarns for the first time during the 2025 Yarn Crawl. This amazing yarn shop on Haight Street is an absolute dream for fiber enthusiasts! The selection is incredible--beautiful hand-dyed skeins, luxurious natural fibers, and a stunning range of colors and textures. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and so cool. I want to be like them when I grow up (or actually, when I get younger). If you're a fiber artist--or just love supporting local, creative businesses--this shop is a must-visit. Can't wait to come back for more inspiration (and more yarn, of course)! read more

With as many times as I've been to SF in the past decade...I've never stopped into a yarn store. THIS one was charming and I wish I had the wherewithal to purchase all the lovely yarns they offer. The shopkeeper at the time was very helpful and was working on her crochet also...tell tale sign of someone with a craft passion. They allowed me to take pics of the yarns I was tearfully leaving behind. Thank you. read more

New yarn store in town!!! Adorable and quaint shop on Haight. Great lighting in the store with a comfortable spot in the back to knit in. They just opened so they're still building up their stock. I can't wait to come back here! I came into the store with a recently started project and a bunch of questions, and Zappa helped answer all of my questions, showcased different yarns based on my needs, and even showed me hands-on techniques and examples to clarify the questions I had. I also got to use the fancy machine to spin up some cakes of the yarn I bought, which was both fun and super useful. Gorgeous yarns, all the notions you need, and beyond pleasant people! 10/10 recommend! read more

Amazing selection of hand-dyed yarns, arranged by yarn weight. Not cheap, but a great treat for a visiting knitter!

I was worried that San Francisco was a yarn desert, but Firebird Yarns is NOT a mirage! Okay, a cheesy intro, but I wanted to get your attention about this great shop. Less than a year old, it truly has the feel of a location that has curated an eclectic selection of yarns. You'd never know that the owner is young enough to be my daughter (yep, really) but possesses an amazing amount of knowledge about trending colors and styles. Kathryn answers any of your questions and helps you "think out loud" about what you are looking for; she is not condescending or pushy. Great selection of yarns, many of them from the San Francisco area. Wide range of yarn colors and weights, and did I mention at reasonable prices. read more

I've been knitting since I was six years old, and I am pretty sure I've been to every yarn store in the bay area. Firebird surpasses them all for selection of hand-dyed and local yarns. Most yarn stores feel claustrophonic; Firebird is open and woodsy with great natural light and lots of room to hang out. Staff is friendly and happy to compare different yarns (there are so many options) and discuss the tradeoffs. Parking anywhere in this neighborhood is never fun, but worth the hassle. If you like to knit or crochet, or just want to be inspired by beautiful fibers, go to Firebird! read more

I had the chance to visit this lovely store on my recent trip to Monterey by way of San Francisco. Great selection of yarns and notions! Great customer service and friendly employees as well in a cool neighborhood. I was able to find a type of yarn in person I had been trying to find at various different shops over the years because colorways dont quite look the same online than in person. Also, I would rather shop local whenever possible. This shop happened to have it and I am thrilled :) now I'm ready to get rolling on a new sweater. Thank you! read more

In my wildest dreams I never imagined that a yarn store would open up 1/2 block away from me!!!! I thought I was dreaming when I saw it. When I went in I was struck by the gorgeous light and welcoming space. The yarn is to die for. Mostly indie yarn and so lovely. There's a space with a couch that is dedicated to welcoming knitters. Yeah, you can just come in and knit. Good luck walking out without buying something amazing. They even have a space for classes. I am over the top excited about this addition to the Haight. read more

I didn't buy anything but I walked in because I was interested in seeing what kind of yarns are out there. I'm trying to get into crocheting and use cheap yarn right now, but I wanted to see what the good stuff costed. Anyway, two ladies were in the back talking and knitting and one came up to me to ask if I needed any help. She was very sweet, charismatic and knowledgeable. She even recognized my shirt (global change statement using Venice) and shared some experiences with me. Will be coming back once I know a little bit more about what I'm doing with crochet. read more

Firebird Yarn is sooooooo good! Visiting the city from L.A. , did all the visitor stuff with the fam first , then this mama got to do her thing at this yarn shop. And boy was it worth the wait. Firebird Yarn Shop was the highlight of my trip. Great local yarn selections, clean and cozy environment and super kind and knowledgeable shop owner. Did I leave my yarn loving heart in San Francisco? You bet, but took a few skeins home with me to make my heart feel a bit better. A must stop for the yarn loving traveler. read more
