I haven't knitted in years but was recently traveling in Copenhagen with a friend and she made a point to visit so many yarn stores, I think it rubbed off on me. Anyways, no one greeted us. There were a few customers in the store while some women were crocheting or knitting at a table in the back. We walked by them (I even scooted a chair in) to look at yarns and they didn't stand up or say anything. Finally, dad and his daughter walked over saying they wanted to buy something so I went over to get in line behind them with some yarns. Bad service, nice selection of yarn as well as books and patterns and accessories. I stopped by Fengari Fiber Arts over the weekend and was impressed by their warm and friendly customer service, well-merchandised displays, and excellent selection of Jody Long yarns. They even said Jody Long had visited the shop in person- wow! They had plenty of wool, alpaca, silk, and more-- a good, high-end selection overall. The two women who were working were very nice and provided me with a lot of feedback (when asked) on yarns for various projects. I loved their cute Pride display and left with some beautiful Juniper Moon Cumulus yarn. If they'd had more in the colorway I'd chosen, I would have bought more. I don't visit Half Moon Bay frequently, but if I find myself in the area again, I will definitely stop by. read more

I am a yarn addict. I don't say that lightly. I love to crochet and I really love to go into new yarn stores. So, like a moth to a flame, I was drawn to this store. But what could have been a 4-5 star review became a two star review. This store is funky and cute and had I not been with my husband, I probably would have bought something. However, I hated the way I was ignored when in there. That is except for the one one man who worked there. He was nice, conversational, and a fellow crocheter which was cool. And his greeting me and talking with me is where they earned their third star. They did have some interesting yarns. Usually, I'd take a picture of the tag and look for the product online (hello, Amazon). But I didn't only because my impatient husband was waiting for me. I also attended a recent fiber arts field trip to the Valhalla Ranch in San Gregorio, which was organized by this yarn shop. It was FANTASTIC! I received a wonderful education about how organic sustainable wool is created from the Alpaca and sheep wool. Top quality food and dessert was also provided. I waa in this store a couple of days ago and the sales person was less than helpful. She was supposed to get back to me while I was there with information on a pattern, instead she went and sat down and ignored me. Beautiful yarns and helpful and kind staff. You can find all kinds pf project inspiration and books on techniques. Yarn is high quality and therefore somewhat pricy, but worth it when you are making a craft that will last years of enjoyment. If you have questions, they will make loads of suggestions, and they can wind your skeins and take special orders too! The shop is often refreshed/reorganized so bring new collections and rotate the displays so it's always fun to walk in and get that fresh treat! This store has so much potential but instead it's like a time capsule into the world or yarn stores circa 2008. It would be great if they would stock more local yarns and natural colors and natural dyed yarns. Maybe carrying some of the newer yarn magazines would add some interest as well. The folks working in the store seem nice enough but it's not a place my wife or I think of as our first stop to buy knitting supplies even though we're walking distance to the store. I'd love to see the store reflect the locality of where they are. Maybe carry some of the modern California grown yarns would be a good start. read more

Quite impressive for a small town yarn shop, Fengari stocks high quality yarns from Noro, Manos del Uruguay, Debbie Bliss, Malabrigo - in other words, the best yarns. The place is cluttered and you get the impression that they have yarn coming out of their ears. There are boxes all over the place, particularly towards the back of the store. The selection is very good and they also have an excellent collection of knitting magazines and books (though not the largest). I even spotted a Japanese knitting book. Yarns are organized by brand. Needles? Needle cases? They have those of course. And knitting and crochet classes. The prices are on the higher side though and the sales aren't as extensive as I've seen at other knitting stores. read more

My five year old son and I wondered into the store for the first time a couple weeks ago. I had just started teaching him how to knit so we wanted to browse yarn colors. I hadn't planned on buying anything since we were already working on a project and him being five it will likely take a while. I was a little nervous about bringing a small boy into the shop, it's a very pretty shop. There were a couple customers in the store chatting with the ladies who worked there when we were there and we were there a little while (my son found the button wall and wanted to look at every button). The ladies checked on us a couple times and were very friendly. My son picked out a button he liked and then we found the felting kits. I have always wants to learn and they had an octopus kit and octopus are his favorite. I really appreciate the way the ladies treated my son when we were in there. As we were checking out I told them he found the watermelon button he liked and we would like one. There were five left and she realized they were all a little different so she let him pick out which of the five he liked best. It's such a little thing but it impressed me, people can so easily brush off a five year old boy in a yarn shop or just pick out any of the watermelon buttons for him but they were thoughtful of him. And then they asked if I had felted before and I told them I had not and she proceeded to give me an impromptu demonstration right on the spot. It was so nice to be able to see first hand it being done and ask questions. In this crazy time we are living in where we have to be so distanced it was nice to feel the warmth and passion these ladies have for their customers and their craft, while maintaining covid protocols of course. My son and I cant wait to go back to their cute little store and show them the cool stuff we have been felting, and his watermelon button. We selected some beautiful yarn and she helped us select a wonderful snap on faux fur pompom. My only regret is that I live so far away, lol. I am an avid knitter so I love when I come across an independent yarn store. That said, I was thoroughly disappointed with my Fengari experience. Even though the little town of Half Moon Bay was super busy because it's the week between Christmas and New Year's there were only two employees in the store. But neither were friendly or welcoming or pleasant or... well, I could go on and on. And from reading the reviews I don't think I'm the first customer who's experienced their icy hospitality. As for yarn selection, they did have some great stuff but nothing spectacular. I did find a few skeins to purchase but the store overall is cluttered and messy, and doesn't lend itself to a great shopping experience. I usually enjoy browsing and touching all the yarn, but here I felt like I was in my Grandmother's messy closet and just wanted to buy my yarn and leave. Sorry Fengari. I'm not a fan. read more

I just learned to knit last year and was quickly drawn to it. Something about the repetitive movements and concentration it requires which puts me in a somewhat meditative and relaxed state (plus, there's something so fulfilling in making something, for someone, with your hands). Well, lucky for me, this time around, I finally decided to make something for myself. I really wanted to hit up Imagiknit in the city, but found myself in downtown Half Moon Bay instead. Found the perfect Wool/Silk/Cashmere blend - I LOVE this yarn and am nearly finished with my project! Great high-quality inventory of yarn here. Be forewarned - you can easily spend more than you budgeted, so have your project(s) in mind and keep your shopping focused! Haven't been to Imagiknit yet but from what I've read, Fengari is probably a little closet compared to it. As small as it may be, it's enough of a selection for me every time. They also have great finished products displayed throughout the store. They offer classes for beginners and those tailored around specific projects and advanced knitters. The store is packed so I'm not sure where they host their classes. Customer service has been wonderful every time I've visited and people always seem to know each other here! read more

They did not even give us a glance, even though we were talking loud enough for them to hear that my wife was trying to knit a blanket. I also read the comment below about racist chatter regarding Mexicans. Whoa...so...much...yarn... It's almost TOO much yarn, although not even close to the inventory at Imaginknit. Fengari has a great selection of pricey, but quality yarns. All types, too. Synthetic, wool, cotton, cashmere...you name it, they've got it. Initially I came here looking for novelty yarns...I wanted to make knitted and crocheted leis...don't ask. They had every novelty yarn I could want, and more. Yes, even more than Imaginknit... The ladies here are very sweet, although the service can be a tad on the sloooow side, if there's more than two customers in the shop. But I walk in here with money, I walk out without. So obviously they're doing their jobs well. Knitters are a special breed. It's not just for old ladies in rocking chairs anymore. Young, hip chicks with sticks are creating some bitchin' and creative stuff...although I don't know if I'd ever be daring enough to wear knitted hot pants. I left with luxurious Peruvian hand dyed yarn, needles and she even taught me how to cast on. It's been ages since I've knitted and I'm hooked!
