Long ago this place was located on a second floor facing Union Square. Now it is tucked away near North Beach, a little harder to spot but worth the visit. There is lots to look at and explore, but the coolest part in my opinion was seeing two ladies in the back finishing pieces by hand. Needlepoint Inc is an amazing store with a huge selection of wonderful needlework canvases. I came in to get some advice on canvases I already had and the fibers to use and they were so helpful. Street parking is a little tricky but doable. Close enough to public transportation -- Bart, Muni and the ferry. It's a good thing I live across the Bay. In a small storefront on Jackson Square* one can find the dreamiest of needlepoint shops. It's the sort of place that gentlemen** arrive at in the morning, take their seat at one of the comfy tables up front, whip out their coffee and their canvas amid hellos, and while away their day stitching in the company of like-minded individuals. It's the sort of place that women search through stacks of hand-painted canvasses while confidentially confiding "I come with my husband on business trips to San Francisco just so I can come to this store". It's the sort of shop that staff asks, as you drop off a completed piece for finishing, "what are you working on next?" and when you pick up that piece - now a gorgeous, artful pillow - they ask again. Of course they wish to sell you a new canvas, threads, perhaps a kit but really? I think they're genuinely interested to know what's next on your list. That's how needlepoint people run. Whatever you might be looking for in the needlepoint arena, Needlepoint Inc. has got it: Canvasses are organized, cover pretty much every category you can imagine, and will have you swooning with delight; the shop is filled with examples of completed pieces, inspiration for how to finish your piece; and the staff is full of ideas to make your completed piece look superb. I've had pieces finished elsewhere and can say that the creativity of Needlepoint Inc's finishers is a notch above the rest. Does it come cheaply? None of it, but if you play in this field you already know what to expect price-wise. Still, as someone who is slow to complete pieces, I can honestly say that the per minute cost comes out to very little and I've blown money out my ears on plenty of things that won't be passed down to future generations, unlike my beautiful needlepoint pillows. If you're into needlepoint here's your place. This place is an absolute must for anyone who loves needlepoint! I have been coming here since I was a small child, and over the years it had been one of my favorite places not only to shop but to learn. Word to the wise- GIVE YOURSELF TIME when you come to the store- the selection is absolutely massive, and if you're in a rush you won't be able to scratch the surface of what they have to offer. The staff is very helpful if you need them, but they're also happy to step back and let you browse at your leisure. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you want or need it though- these ladies are unbelievably talented stitchers, and can help you figure out anything. Their finishing is some of the best I've seen anywhere- it's not cheap, but the quality is exquisite, and let's face it- after you've invested so much time stitching, it's worth having the thing done right. read more

They have an impressive number of canvases, however, its hard to find anything because nothing is labeled. You have to ask someone to help you find what you need and they had a very snippy attitude. There are lots of cubbies stuffed with canvases, but if you are looking for, lets say, animal canvases, you wouldn't know where to look. Before going to Needlepoint Inc I was warned that they are rude; I found that to be absolutely true. I was sorry I didn't have a pleasant experience. read more

Stacks upon stacks of canvases! And a very friendly staff who helped pull canvases for me. Many of the canvases were quite pricy, but they tend to have some larger, more intricate canvases. There were still many canvases that were available to those on a budget! I will visit again when in San Francisco! read more

This is the BEST needlepoint shop west of the Mississippi!!! I have been stitching for over 35 years and have patronized stores all over the US, and there is no place like Needlepoint Inc. Since discovering the shop, I have gotten all of my projects there. The selection of canvases is superb; the fibers and threads are spectacular; and the finishing services are just unbelievable! I've had my projects framed, made into pillows, turned into foot stools and Christmas stockings, and framed, and have gotten tons of compliments on them. Another reviewer stated that the canvases are "overpriced" -- these are NOT Michael's-style kits, but hand-painted mini-masterpieces, and as for the fibers, pure wool and silk are not cheap synthetic. When you buy a canvas from Needlepoint Inc., you're investing in an heirloom, and you get what you pay for. At Needlepoint Inc., what you're getting is the very best. read more

I had been so excited to visit this store. The thread and canvas selection and examples of embroidery work were impressive. But the overpriced canvasses and customer service were not. I was there for 90 MINUTES and could not get anyone to help me. And I was the only customer in the store! There were two employees and an owner, and none of them would give me the time of day. I finally cornered one so I could buy some thread. Very disappointing. read more

This needlepoint store is fantastic. I am a novice needlepointer and had a very special project in mind. Diane, Betty and Marta have expertly guided me through the process, helping with the design, the yard selection, teaching me the basics, recommending stitches, I could go on and on. They obviously take great pride in their shop and the quality of their work plus they are delightful to work with. This store has everything you could possibly need and then some. I have been a favorite customer of this wonderful needlepoint shop for many years. The canvases and threads are unusual, their ideas over every type of needlepoint is never-ending. As you can see painted canvases and silk threads are and have been my favorite stitching obsessions for over twenty years. I have been a knitter first, stitcher second; however, when I found friends, guilds and groups stitching I fell right in. Everyone needs an admirer of their work as well as your admiration of their work. My other passions are reading and dogs (I think my husband comes in there somewhere, at least after the dogs). What a find!! Needlepoint designs, colors, and inventory beyond anything I've ever found, even in Europe. Being from the southwest, I fell in love with the cowboy pillows with leather fringe with beads. The interesting aspect of this store is being able to see examples of finished designs. Their final workmanship is superb, and wanted to stock up when I was told to send my finished canvas back for finishing.....I chose a canvas of a jolly chef, top hat and rosy cheeks that will be mounted in a hand made serving tray that uses old silverware for handles. The owner spent so much time with me, I'm going back today. This project, a fire in the fireplace, and my dog.....maybe a glass of wine??, will take me away to a place of peace and quiet.
