Customer service is on point. From the people who run this place to the wine pourers...they are exceptional.

They have moved to the historic train depot in downtown Paso Robles (just a short walk from the Hotel Cheval). Wines have evolved and are better than I remember, more balanced and food friendly than the over extracted, high alcohol wines I recall from the early days of Cypher. Great outside seating with plenty of umbrellas and art work. Inside you can pull up a chair at the wine bar or settle into one of the eclectic chairs or sofas that dot the various sitting areas making the experience warm and comfortable like tasting wine in your favorite neighborhood hangout (different vibe from the Highway 46 spot, but such a welcome improvement). Susan (aka SAM), the owner, is a convivial host offering bites to pair with your tasting, taking the time to explain the wines and the pairings. She is clearly invested in making sure people enjoy themselves (which we did!). Just a lovely place, good wines, great experience, a very comfortable and enjoyable place to hang out and taste wine; we will definitely go back when next we are in Paso. read more

My husband and I went wine tasting for our honeymoon and we found this place. My taste in wine is go big or go home. This place nailed it. We happened to have someone in our group who was a club member of the winery, so we got a barrel room tasting tour. Omg, it was spectacular. Not only was it highly informative but we got to taste the same wine from different barrels to get a feel for what types of characteristics the different woods gave the wines. Unbelievable experience, we walked out as club members and a couple of cases of our favorites! If you're into wines that pack a punch and a kick and maybe a body-slam, this is the place for you! read more

Cypher has since moved to the front of the building in a swanky, updated tasting room. Same impression this time - you don't keep the glass like you used to. read more

Visited on 8/23/13. Wine okay but overpriced, customer service poor. Really inconsistent & confusing branding/policies. No more free glass with tastings even though the website indicated differently. Our server knew the website wasn't updated and said that "since we called them out on it," they're supposed to honor the policy. Will not be back. read more

Had a wonderful afternoon tasting at Cypher! Loved drinking wine on the patio, super friendly and informative.

This was probably the worst winery we went to in Paso Robles. From first impression, the tasting room felt really dirty. The floor was gross and the sink behind the counter was really gunky! Next, the service was very inattentive. There were 2 other couples in the room and we still waited about 10 minutes between each tasting! Then came the wine. I really did not care for any of their wines. There are many other wineries up vineyard dr. and in Los Olivos that have really nice mourvedre blends but theirs were all really bad. We paid the $10 each for our tastings. We asked if we got to take the glassware with us as other people on Yelp have mentioned and were told no, it was not included. To top it off, the people who were next to us in the tasting room were given their glasses! Slap in the face. I will be definitely letting my friends know where to skip on their next wine tour! read more

Awesome tasting room even better wines! Elne was great! I actually work in the industry, have high expectations and she surpassed them! You can tell she not only loves her job but also has passion for the wine. They way she described the wines with words like "sexy" and "bossy" made me really enjoy the experience. We even came back the next day to buy the port. The atmosphere is ME all around. Goth/punk meets nature and glitter. GREAT music. We heard a mix of NIN and Smashing Pumpkins to Nirvana and Heart. They have a stone oven pizza and a great patio. GO THERE! I bought Anarchy and the Gargoyle port!! read more

This is one of my 2 favorite wineries in North County, I tell everyone who will listen to go to Cypher if they want to taste Great wine. Nicole and the rest of the staff is fun, great and ready to pour with a smile and share some wine knowledge. They have some great wines and are priced affordably. If you like big in your face wines, that are a bit different from everything else in the area, a cool staff that keeps it loose and fun, then this is the place for you. Going to Cypher was a great experience! They are pet friendly on their outdoor patio and they just bring you the wine tastings outside. I had a great time here and their wines are really good! I ended up buying their Peasant wine which clocks in at a hefty $50 but I really did enjoy it and seemed worth the price. One of the exciting parts of wine tasting here was that their was a serve that brought out a wine that was not on the wine list....ohhhh...so that was exciting and it did taste great! In the end it was between the Peasant wine and that one. We had a great time here! read more

Everything I could want. A fun, funky unique tasting room, cool, hip and attentive staff and really high quality, great tasting wines. Good value, great juice and a fun environment, the antithesis of stuffy. Go there. It's right off the highway in Paso and well worth a visit. read more

Cypher is one of my very favorites. I am never disappointed when I open a bottle and I can't help myself so I purchase a lot of their wine. I make a point of planning trips around this winery if I'm in the area and am a member. It is an absolute delight to drink their wine. The 2011 Mouvedre is currently my favorite. It defines the word "luscious" for me but honestly I think it's impossible to go wrong with any of his wines. So glad I found Cypher! read more

Sis and I dropped in on a lark. The wines were surprisingly drinkable. Not a symphony in the mouth, but inoffensive, gentle and drinkable wines with ADORABLE labels!! They're the kinds of bottles you display before opening. Our pourer was friendly (and bored because there was no one else there when we got there) and it was a fine choice. This is seriously the worst winery experience I have ever had up in Paso. So bad, it left me in tears. My husband is recovering from a broken leg (a bad motorcycle accident) so we obviously had to SIT, and in this case it was outside. It was the the last table available outside. A little background...my husband and I were supposed to take this trip 2 months ago- one day before my husband got in his accident. Anyhow, we rescheduled for this weekend. This has been more of a getaway for me. Anyhow, we were recommended this winery by one of the girls that works at Chronic. Wines are okay, but my problem is the fact that this guy Mark (? Owner) comes out about 6-7 times while we're tasting and not once stops by our table. I mean, we're about 6 feet away. You can literally see my husbands crutches propped up against the table. I think my first indicator that we weren't welcome here was that they were complaining about "younger" wine drinkers. Maybe we look too young or ARE too young..my 31st birthday is tomorrow, btw. The other three tables next to us got to taste everything off the tasting menu, but not us. I got to taste a GSM when I complained, but by that point I was so upset and hyperventilating, I just wanted to leave. We got the tasting comped (yay) but still had to pay for the salad and Brie. I won't be back here. There are way more places I can go and feel like a lower-class citizen for more money. As I write this, I'm sitting at J Dusi and have had at least 3 workers come up and ask if we needed anything. Good job, Cypher. read more

Hit this place as a random stop passing through the area today. We were deeply impressed by the wines and the warm welcome and great experience. The young woman pouring was kind and knowledgeable. I did not get her name but she really showed a superior level of service and charm. All the wines we tasted were excellent and loved the bottles and tasting room atmosphere. Will gladly stop here again when in the area and highly recommend this stop. Next time we will try the food! read more

My husband and I truly enjoyed going to Cypher this afternoon. The last time we were here it was still Four Vines, and the tasting room was around the side (where the new restaurant is.). While we were here mid week, so we weren't able to try the tapas style dining we still loved our experience. Jodi served us. She was knowledgable, engaging, and just a fun personality. The wines were all delicious without the atmosphere being pretentious. A win-win for us! And the Monarchy was just as scrumptious as we remembered. We'd previously joined a wine club in Napa and got burned in the process, but after being here twice, loving all the wines both times and having family members rave over their club membership we've decided that Cypher is a safe bet, because they're consistently awesome. Now they are doing pizzas, too! This is hands-down the best pizza I've ever had. Not the best pizza outside of Italy...simply THE BEST EVER. The two pourers who helped us (Dana and....oh dear, I forget the other lady's name, but she's pregnant) were friendly, very knowledgable, and full of good local knowledge. Very cool tasting room with old vines hanging from the ceiling. Our group of four women got there about an hour before closing. It was a beautiful day and Elne offered to pour our tastings outside at the picnic tables. She was very knowledgable about the wines and winery. Her description of the wines were delicious, you could tell she has a passion for what she does! She was so personable and it made our experience that much more fun. The wines just got better and better. Such creative names and labels for the wine. I would very much recommend making Cypher Winery one of your stops and ask for Elne, you couldn't get anyone better! read more

Personality! This place was fun. Sounds like the people really like working there and are excited about the wines. They were my kind of wine so that was great. Ended up with a couple bottles in my cellar. Staff were fun and knowledgeable and took plenty of time chatting with us. The property is pretty and relaxing, even with the highway right there. At the end they sent us up to Zin Alley which was another amazing treat for dessert wines. read more

This place was an unexpected surprise with a beautiful tasting room, great service and delicious red wines. Kelly was amazing with our wine tasting, and since we wanted to get lunch somewhere, she made recommendations of nearby wineries that offered food (without us having to ask for them). Walked through the door and was hit in the face with Ozzie music. First thought was "This might be all right". I was right. Really liked the room ( cool artwork and light fixtures) and thought the wines were quite good. I actually found the wines better than some of the more reputed stops along the way. While this alone makes for a good stop, Ryan made it great. My wife and I appeared to be the the last visitors of the day. Right from the word go, things were loose and fun. We were played some special request music and treated to some bonus pours with some great chocolate. The wines are good. A little pricey in my opinion. The people are cool. The food is really good. I suggest hitting up Cypher, ordering a pizza, and doing the tasting, even if you do not end up purchasing any wine. read more

I was really turned off when a large motorcycle raced through the outdoor sitting area. The operator was greeted with enthusiasm by employees of the winery. I was left with lungs full of dirty polluted exhaust and a ringing in my ears from the loud noise of the motorcycle. Really couldn't enjoy the wine after that experience. Not a lot of class here. The employees and motorcycle man were enjoying wine and food whilst our group was encouraged to leave. Yuchhh. Never again. read more

We recently went wine tasting in Paso Robles. We hit 16 tasting rooms in 2 1/2 days. Cypher was by far the favorite of everyone in our group. Excellent wine!!!!!!!! The Anarchy is awesome as were all the wines we tasted there. Their tasting room so cool! Great atmosphere and friendly people. We didn't hesitate to join their wine club. We can't wait to get our first shipment. Also check out Farm Stand 46. Great food and a great place to have lunch just around the corner of the building. read more

Christian is the leader of being on the cutting edge of wine makers. Cypher differs from most other wineries, as they are fun, outgoing, entertaining and altogether serious about their products. They are not stuffy, pretentious people, and they always make my wife and I feel at home when we visit. The wine is superb, and the stories behind them all are very entertaining. Meet Christian and you'll never meet another wine maker like him! We are so glad to be club members here. read more

Haven't been to Cypher since 2011, but had fantastic customer service experience recently. All my questions patiently answered, all my requests professionally handled. Had considered dropping my club membership due to completely unrelated circumstances but after the GREAT customer service - not to mention the great wines! - I kept my membership.
