I can't blame the racist, conspiracy nut patrons seated next to us on the ownership, that wouldn't be fair. I'm all for diversity including diversity of thought, but these people were ignorant bigots. Not a shock for the locale I'm sad to say. Anyway as for the food, service and overall experience, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't disappointing. For a town that bills itself as the "pizza capital of the world," the old forge style pizza at Cusamano's doesn't hold a candle to Arcaro's, a place that's caddy corner to here and not currently doing dine-in. We were passing through town and frankly weren't in the mood to eat this interesting style of pizza in the car on a chilly evening. Perhaps we should've been? After pulling into a One-way parking lot the correct way and nearly ending up in a head-on collision thanks to someone who couldn't read (even arrows), we walked inside around 5:30 pm on the Saturday after thanksgiving and the place was dead. Nonetheless, we were greeted by a hostess who made it sound like we were asking for an audience with the pope. She did "find a table" in the back room, and that's where our high hopes began to fade with every seated moment. We ordered a tray of red pizza with sausage & mushroom, along with a half tray of plain white pizza (read up on old forge style pizza if you aren't familiar, they don't do "slices" or "pies" 'round these parts). For an appetizer, we went with stuffed artichoke. Drinks were Diet Coke for the missus, and one of the cheapest red wines ($9/glass, at least the pour was ok and glassware was nice) from cusamano winery in Sicily for me. No complaints on the beverages, although they were a bit slow to notice my empty wine glass for a refill. Normally they're all over that like flies on...honey. I got a refill eventually. The appetizer? Well, it came out AFTER our pizza main course. Coincidentally, our appy was served at the exact same time as our microchip-fearing neighbors order of the same appetizer. That reeks of kitchen sloth, or "efficiency" at the expense of customer service. The pizza? If you're making a pilgrimage to this pizza capital for its namesake speciality, try somewhere else. The white pizza is a bland calzone in self-denial. See photos. It's literally a dough exterior stuffed with molten hot cheese and with very little flavor. No marinara to dip it in. We had to ask for larger plates, otherwise we would've been stuck with the tiny ones for bread. The replacements weren't much bigger. The red pizza? It was passable. The sauce was bland, no onion flavor or really any discernible taste there. The sausage was high quality and the mushrooms we could find weren't bad. Also, the crust was baked perfectly: crispy undercarriage and crust without being burnt. It supported everything else very well. The flavor sadly wasn't there. The artichoke? I don't care for it regardless of who makes it, but boo loved it. This speaks volumes as she grew up with a mother who packed artichoke for school lunch in the face of mockery from classmates. The chocolate cheesecake dessert was great and tasted like it was made on premises or at least locally in a basement somewhere . The espresso had an amazing crema to the point where I was concerned they put cream and sugar in it. Oh and the bread + oil served to start? It's standard issue. That's a good way to describe Cusamano's as a whole (handicapping for location): standard issue. Thing is, you can do better, even in this small town. Especially if you're going to hail yourselves as the pizza capital. Cusamano's is fools gold as far as fine dining or amazing pizza. To end on a positive note: Even pyrite has its shine!!

Peach Martini...definitely a must.

The service was excellent. I had expected more from the food. Granted...it was a Friiday night, and it was jammed...non stop turning tables. The peach martini was excellent. I had to stop myself after 2! Nice size glass and smooth as silk. If this review were based on bar service and table service, it would have been a 5 star review. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. I had the veal marsala, which was small pieces of veal with ALOT of mushrooms and heavy brown gravy that was rather tasteless. The side of pasta I had was good, but their red sauce on this evening was slightly bitter. But..because the veal was small, I ate all of the pasta. Hubby had the shrimp risotto. The shrimp were very good, but the risotto was sticky and lacked flavor or spices. It was not creamy with a flavorful broth as a typical Italian risotto. We usually enjoy this restaurant when we visit the area, but this trip it just did not meet the mark. Certainly, it is still a good choice if you are visiting the area.

Another don't miss established restaurant. We love the cellar and Sean usually hard to get seats unless you are super early. Last nights dishes a little heavy on the salt but overall delicious. Highly recommend.

Food, service is always spot on. I love eating in the cellar. You will not go wrong with anything you order.

Definitely a favorite but they need to pay more attention to the cleanliness of the walls, silverware and glasses they're putting at table.

I was in a pinch during Covid as I had a business meal with out of town guests and nothing in town was open on a Tuesday night.

Chef Von & Mom - LA burger, garlic fries

Chef Von & Mom

Traveled out of town and made a pit stop in Scranton to fuel up, thank God we did because this…read moreplace was AMAZING! Great customer service. Great flavors. Great ambiance (love me some R&B). I live in LA, California where everything is pricey and sometimes the food is not as flavorful for the price you pay. The burger here had so much flavor-definitely worth the price. I would come back to Scranton just to eat here. Thank you, Von & Mom!!

Incredible what you can find when you aren't looking…read more I stumbled upon a gem, with a good bit of history. On a layover in Scranton I was walking around hungry, but was unsure of where to go to fix that. So I do what I always do, walk aimlessly. Just a few steps away from the University of Scranton, Chef Von & Mom sits. I entered and was immediately greeted with warm smiles, and beautiful faces. Mom was present, and gave me a brief history lesson. She informed me her family actually established the first black owned restaurant in Scranton. At that point I had heard enough, the smells coming from the kitchen had already decided for me. I asked Mom whats a popular dish I would enjoy, she suggested the BBQ sandwich with the fries. The order came out very quickly and piping hot. The BBQ was juicy, and the fries were seasoned to perfection. I loved the toasted bun, it held the moisture of the coleslaw well without getting soggy. The BBQ sauce was a nice compliment to the overall sandwich, nothing else was needed, this was indeed a hit. I appreciate the incredible customer service, but I love that this family has continued an incredible tradition of bringing Scranton quality food with no exceptions. Pro tip: After I left I looked this place up, the owners Chef Von & Mom were on "Next Level Chef" with Gordon Ramsey. Check out their episode, it originally aired on FOX.

It's always fun to dress up with the family and go out for a nice dinner. We always passed AV and…read morewanted to finally give it a try! It's a beautiful place, nice lounge area, classy bar (pls remember you're still at a nice place, cough cough backward hat guy...). We sat down at our candle lit table and got complimentary water and our waitress sent over some bread and olive oil... the waitress with the bread, well wasn't the most social person. She gave us each a big piece of bread and some olive oil. We did request black pepper in the oil which I suggest. The bread was also cold which was strange. 6/10 For appetizers we got beef carpaccio and calamari. The beef carpaccio came out with a oniony creamy dip, arugula, onion, capers, and dill in the middle on top of the thin meat. Strangely it came with like 4 house made salt and vinegar potato chips. I honestly liked it so much and wanted more and I got it for dessert... 8.8/10. The calamari was perfectly cooked, not chewy at all, and also came with tentacles (my favorite). There was a yummy aïoli with a tang and some peppers. Just wish there was more... 7.9/10 For our entrees we got two filets, medium rare, one with Gorgonzola sauce and one with no sauce (the sauce comes on the side). We also got two bucatini dishes, one with and one without meat. The filets were perfectly cooked, usually every restaurant either overcooks or undercooks my steak but AV did it right. The Gorgonzola sauce was a rich cheesy sauce. The mashed potatoes were creamy and felt homemade. The carrots were alright, just sliced and cooked same with the green beans. 7.6/10 The bucatini was actually really good! So creamy and delicious, with a little spice. They both came with burrata (love), and the meat one came with a little amount of sausage pieces nothing recognizable. The spice wasn't unenjoyable and was tolerable to someone who can't handle spice. 8.6/10 Time for dessert, we got crème brûlée, the apple cake, and the sweet tart brown sugar lemon dessert. And some beef carpaccio because I wasn't feelin dessert. Crème brûlée, the top was perfectly crystallized. The inside was room temp, not cooled and not warm. 7.6/10 Apple cake, the cake came with a big ice cream scoop on top. Inside there was Apple slices like a pie. The cake was bread like and a good balance of the sweet ice cream and apple innards. 6.8/10 Sweet lemon brown sugar tart, this wasn't a favorite of the table but I didn't mind it. It was a cup like tart, with mouse or a cream in it. 5.7/10. Overall experience was pretty good, nothing bad stood out except for the cold bread and non social waitress interaction. The food was great, atmosphere was wow, and the outside was a beautiful walk to the car. The parking is a fend for yourself and there is a sign on the door to not use the private lot across the street. Overall experience....... 8.1/10 No pictures this time, was really hungry.

I loved the fish, the chicken parm was pretty good, I'm hard to please with that one. The table service is good, bar service better. Beautiful ambiance, and a great area available for rent upstairs. I do visit the bar often, as they have several great non alcoholic options including wine, which I appreciate tremendously. Bonus points for N/A products and a great bartender. (John, I think?) Thank you!
