The Down Pour - This shrimp appetizer was so delicious - Bars Near Me - Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

I really wanted to like this place. We held my son and daughter-in-law's very small wedding dinner here. (About 12 of us). The food was meh at best. Under flavored, overcooked, and it took forever. Considering we had booked it a month ahead of time and it was a Wednesday (not a typical busy night) the service was sooooo slow. It gave us time to have conversations but after all the things I heard, I expected much better food. read more

Service was horrible And the food was subpar : fish wasn't fully cooked. Hamburger tasted "wrong" Would not return Totally bummed about our experience- I was so looking forward to going here read more

Very pretty restaurant inside. The food is super delicious and a lot of unique options. The drink selection is great, and good prices all around for the amount of food you receive. You will definitely have leftovers for lunch the next day. read more

Came here two years ago and had a good time with some friends. Food was great and decent prices. Flash forward to this Wednesday at around 8:30pm, online said they were open but only for us to get there and their kitchen was closed. Quite a bomber as we were very hungry Nonetheless, MAKE SURE TO CALL ON WEEKDAYS to see if their kitchen is open before you show up so you don't waste your time driving there for nothing. (The bar section was open tho but the rest of the restaurant was closed off and everyone there was sitting at the bar top) read more

I visited DownPour on a trip back home. For 8pm reservations on. Saturday evening, it was pretty empty. The server was attentive and checked in often. The umbrella room is definitely a nice touch and sight to see especially for downtown Wilkes- Barre. The food.. mostly bland. We started off with the short rib portobello which was the best thing we had- great combination and flavor. As for the entrees- I am not certain what we ordered as this was a few months back but it was a chicken dish/ perhaps loaded chicken Marsala and it lacked flavor despite the mozzarella, spinach, and red pepper. We had same experience with Shrimp and Crab au gratin that was drowning in sauce. The cauliflower on the side with all dishes was also very bland. I believe this place has potential and based on earlier pictures, it seems it's hit or miss with consistency. read more

Man, I really enjoyed this place when I came here. I was in town and came here for an event. Due to this I was able to partake in this place in a bit of a different way. It also allowed me to taste a variety of food. The space is vibrant. It looked amazing as soon as you walked in and ever so welcoming. I, of course the tourist I am, was looking around and taking it all in. And you need to look around here, even up or you might miss some decoration that ties into the name of this place. As for the food, like I said, I had a variety of it that really let you know they are able to provide for a multitude of tastes. Because this was an event there was a spread, but I also ordered from the menu. What was provided was a little array of their appetizers. We had the pear and brie bruschetta, amazing and refreshing, and we had the chicken bites, I want to say they did one with BBQ and one that had a bit more kick, but I am not sure exactly which one. The chicken bites reminded you of being in an Asian restaurant, it was so crispy while still being slathered with the sauce. As for what I ordered on my own, I went with the Crispy Asian Brussels. I was told that this was the go to item here that a lot of people seem to enjoy. They were not wrong. It was quite tasty and had me damn near lick the bowl. The table I sat at we shared a few items as well. The table was given their Al Pastor Pork Nachos, which when they showed up I had just sat down. The server must have seen the confusion on my face, because I had not had the chance to order if I just sat down. I was then informed that each table was getting a plate of nachos. They were great and an ok thing to pick over waiting for our food. The thing I liked the most, and I kicked myself for not ordering, was the fried pickles. I want to say that they make the pickles in house, if they don't, they do a masterful job of doctoring them up. They give them a buttermilk bath and then coat them with, of all things, cornflakes. Served with buttermilk ranch and a chipotle aioli. These things would have me stopping here on a consistent basis if I live around the area. The staff here were amazing. Buzzing around the area. Appreciative of the event we were holding. Very gracious and attentive. read more

The Down Pour - Bars Near Me - Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

The Down Pour has been around Wilkes Barre in some fashion as the Down Pour or the former Bart & Urbys for a while. I never knew much about it outside it was a bar in downtown Wilkes Barre. We went for a birthday recently and were pleasantly surprised. We tried to get reservations in the Umbrella room but couldn't. Even calling over a week in advance. That's where you want to sit and eat as I think that's where you'll have the best dining experience. Outside that room is very much like a corner bar. Make NO mistake, I loved the food at the Down Pour and my review is more like 3.5 stars (Yelp needs to change whole star ratings) There were like 10 different things on the menu I wanted to try. I settled on the Jambalaya Risotto special, but if not that, the espresso rubbed Pork Chop was a definite. The table got some appetizers. I went for the meatball appetizer. They weren't like the softball meatballs I usually love, but three normal size meatballs. They were good, but oddly there was no bread for the table for the sauce. We also got a bruschetta appetizer which was very good. My wife got the Crab Florentine Risotto. It was rich and full of crab. Very good. Others got the Burrata Chicken with a basil sauce which they all loved. Overall, I have zero complaints with the Down Pour service or food (outside no bread for the table). There are so many other things on the menu I wanted to try and something tells me I wouldn't be disappointed. It's just I can't tell if I want to have a nice dinner at the Down Pour or mosey up to the bar and do shots. If you're looking for both. This is the place. The bartenders are super great. In fact, after dinner, we went to the bar and had some drinks. When they found out there was a birthday, they gave us a couple of beers on the house and then later some shots on the house. There are plenty of TVs , as I think it was a sports bar at some point. Given everything, the Down Pour has a really great menu, and really great food, so you can sit at the bar, watch some sports and eat really good food or go for a nicer experience in the back. You choose. read more

When I am in my hometown visiting I love to stop and enjoy good food and drinks here. Recently brought a friend along for her 1st time and we highly enjoyed the visit. Tuesday nights seem to offer a tapas menu and some alcoholic flight options (beer/martini). I got the prosciutto wrapped grilled asparagus with a cup of their amazing French onion soup. My friend for empanadas and a shrimp noodle stir fry. Dishes were very tasty and well presented. Martini flights were great too.. pickle martini with Tito's, yes please!!! Wait staff is always super nice and efficient. Highly recommend stopping here. They do reservations too! read more

This restaurant met and exceeded my expectations. First of all the staff was just amazing in their attentiveness and overall positive attitude, that started the positive vibes of this place. When you first walk in you might think that it's just an average place with a bar, but then you order! To start I had the pork belly appetizer, the crunch of the skin mixed with the soft chewy texture of the pork interact amazingly with the special gravy they put over it.....highly recommend. As I sat there waiting for the meals to come out I was ready planning my next visit when I saw the chicken sandwich come out to the table I'm front of us.....it was HUGE and looked like it was cooked perfectly. I ended up with the buffalo Mac and cheese.......and oh so gooey and the smoked Gouda made the dish, the chicken was so moist and flavorful.....also it was not breaded like most places which I neatly made it even better!!!! I'll definitely be going back!!! read more

I used to watch those Gordon Ramsey shows and wonder why he'd freak out about scallops. Eat scallops around NEPA, they're good, but they're not worth freaking out about. However, eat a scallop at the Down Pour and it's a whole different animal. The scallops I had were amazing, like nothing I've had before. The flavors were amazing. So amazing I have no idea what everyone else doing with them. Same deal with the calamari special app I had. The sauce that came on them was so different. It was a flavor explosion. This place is an absolute gem. read more

Found this place through Yelp. You yelpers don't disappoint! Dinner for me was the filet and lobster tail, wife had the penne alla vodka with shrimp. Both were outstanding and well portioned. The Down Pour - So pretty! - Bars Near Me - Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

I am here in PA on business and needed a dinner recommendation. Someone suggested we try Down Pour. We arrived at opening and were escorted to the lovely area where they have umbrellas and a ton of tiny lights. It is so warm and cozy, love it! Our server was a lovely young lady who was attentive and kind. Started out with the crab dip and a glass of wine for me, and the pomegranate and fig Moscow mule for my dinner companion. The crab dip was wonderful and served with grilled pita bread. Dinner for me was the shrimp and grits while the other person in my party ordered the miso grazed salmon with sweet potatoes and roasted Brussel sprouts. Everything was perfect! Portions were very large! I really enjoyed everything about the restaurant but most especially our server. She was knowledgeable and a delight! Definitely will be back! read more

First time coming to the down pour and was thoroughly impressed with their wide selection of food and how yummy it was. For an appetizer we got the pear & Brie bruschetta and I would come back just for this! I wish there was 4 of them instead of three, when you have 2 people it's weird having three. The portions small but the taste punched big time. All the flavors together are perfect. For my sandwich I got the blackened sea same tuna sandwich, which again, was amazing. The portion size for this was perfect and worth the $16, you get a big portion of fries as well. The decor in the back room with the umbrella lights is gorgeous and the space is big. For dessert we got the creme brûlée, which I wouldn't recommend. It was the worst creme brûlée I've had. They had a few dessert options and I would try another next time. Can't wait to come here again! read more

We made reservations for a Tuesday evening at 8 pm. When we walked in they were busy and we weren't greeted by anyone for a few minutes. We were eventually seated and our server brought over some menus and took our drink order. We both ordered the margarita flights but both agreed that they got watered down by all the ice very quickly in the tiny glasses, which took away from the flavor. We wouldn't order these again. They ran out of a lot of food so our options were very limited. We got the guacamole and chips, which were both made fresh and very good. My friend also ordered the chicken tacos, which she liked. From this visit, I would've only given 3 stars if it weren't for our server, Anthony, who was working his butt off and the fact that the food was pretty decent. read more

Our first visit....good amount of parking, could drive by and miss it tho. Upbeat atmosphere but relaxing....background music was fitting but not overwhelming. Very open seating, not on top of each other. 2 bars, 20 beers on tap (a guess), nice cocktail menu The food.....oh, the food....top notch. Ceviche app....not what we were expecting but delicious nonetheless. Burrata risotto with crab...huge portion, LOADS of lump crab, prepared perfectly, not too spicy. Crab & shrimp gratin...nice presentation, the sherry cream sauce was to die for, perfect portion. All together...2 craft beers, 2 cocktails, 1 app, 2 seafood entrées: $120, not unreasonable at all. Definitely will be visiting here again...a semi-hidden gem in the heart of WB. read more

First time visit but we will be back. I was hooked when I saw the Brussel Sprouts on the menu and they were plentiful and good. A little sweet and probably enough for 3 people. ( you can always order more if there's not enough! Lol) I also ordered the street tacos with Aji tuna but those were just So so. However my husband got the barbecue brisket sandwich with onion rings and that was absolutely delicious. The draft beer selection was also plentiful and mixed with local brews and mainstream. Finally the atmosphere and waitstaff was nice and nearby on street parking was easily available read more

The Down Pour catered our Wilkes University Wrestling Alumni event in the Wilkes gym. The food was outstanding and they never ran out of anything. Their staff was very attentive. I had heard good things about this place and wanted to finally check it out. We were a group of 7. We were very happy with our cocktails, server was great, but the food definitely had something to be desired. Someone in the kitchen must have a real sweet tooth. We got the brussel sprouts appetizer. Tasted like sugary candy. I couldn't eat it. My friend got the sweet potatoes. I asked why they were so shiny, were they greasy? He said because they put some sort of sugar glaze over them. I tasted them. Horrible. (Come on chef, they are already sweet, hence the name...) He replaced them with regular fries. Someone ordered the falafel burger. Just a dry burger and dry bun with some lettuce on it. The person making this has clearly never had a proper falafel. Falafel should always come with hummus (or at least tzatziki sauce on the side). I ordered a burrata and beet salad with Salmon. I understand the cost for food items had gone up, so I get the $14 for the addition of the salmon, but my $12 salad was terrible. Just mixed lettuce with hard beets and burrata swimming in a pool of tasteless orange oil. This salad could be something so good. It needs lots of tweaking, but at least the idea is there. The atmosphere itself was ok and the live music was great. (A 1 man band playing this night.) We all enjoyed the tuna app (I'd get that again) and would go back for a drink or to hear live music. I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing a large group here again though. The food just isn't up to par. read more

I have tried to eat here twice in the last Month. The first time the kitchen was closed it was 8:30 so you can have drinks but can't order food. Last night we got there at 8:40 and again too late to order anything. I think they should just say restaurant kitchen closes at 8 not 9. Either way we left had dinner someone else and then came back had a couple of drinks and left both times. They have great pictures of drinks but I haven't seen these drinks up close. The Downpour is such an amazing spot. It's my favourite place to treat myself to dinner. Chef Austin and everyone else in the kitchen create such stellar dishes.
