I was very nervous about having all of our windows replaced - but we really had to do it. The windows were all single pane, aluminum frame windows from 1966. In the winter, we couldn't keep heat in the house. We had 6 normal size windows, a large sliding glass door, and a huge picture window in the front. The picture window was actually four pieces of glass, around a large beam, which reached from the lower wall to the top of the vaulted ceiling. We wanted to improve the heat retention in the house, but we didn't want cheap looking, ugly vinyl replacement windows. So, we were worried. I'm so grateful that we were completely relieved and happy when it was all done. Michael was really great at explaining our options and the best types of windows (low profile) to avoid the "big vinyl frame" look. He took all the measurements and made a very fair estimate. Other companies were giving me appointments 3 weeks out. Michal arrived on time, took the measurements, explained my window options and gave me the pros/cons of each brand/style. Our little 90 year bungalow needed windows. Badly. The windows were last done in the late 50's and were of the single pane, aluminum frame variety. Top notch for 1958. Not so much for 2014. Especially as the felt seals had eroded over the years leaving us with some pretty cold (and loud!) drafts. Icy cold in the winter. Hot in the summer. Being able to hear people's footsteps walking down the sidewalk. To top all of that off, we live about 4 blocks from the bay and get a lot of wind tunneling up the block. You get the point. So, the decision was made to look into getting new dual pane windows. My neighbor, who is a contractor was neck deep in work, so he was out. Next step was to make an appointment with the Orange Box. This slick snake oil salesman came over on a Sunday and was very pushy. The bid for the house was completely outrageous. He also gave the stink eye to two custom windows we had in each bedroom. We got the feeling he wasn't going to leave before he made a sale, so we went for the two bedrooms, which we figured had priority. There was no way we could afford what he quoted for the entire house (10 windows) . I would have had to take out a line of credit on the house! The two bedrooms were quoted for a shade over SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! For THREE WINDOWS!!! After I consoled my crying girlfriend, I called in and cancelled the order with Orange Box. She took on the task of finding a fair and reasonable contractor, and Man!, Did she come through?!!! Enter Custom Exchange Windows. Michael came over a few days after her call and took measurements and showed her options. Very nice. Very professional. Straight to the point. And a very fair bid. After we looked over it together, we called, made a deposit and scheduled an install. Robert showed up exactly on time for the install. I was expecting maybe three or four guys, but Robert did the work solo. I was amazed at his speed, professionalism and downright craftsman know-how. All the while, making sure to clean up after a window was put in before moving on to the next window. He was done by the afternoon, and the windows looked beautiful and worked amazingly. As a new home owner, I'm used to being screwed by predators who look at me and see a big, stupid walking dollar sign. For instance: when I called Sears for a quote, I got one for $10,000. Windows by Anderson wanted (wait for it) $21,000 for 14 double-paned windows. Wow. A Google search for "double-pane glass Oakland" brought me to Custom Exchange: $299 per window, installed. I figured it was another scam, but what the hell? I called. Michael was friendly on the phone, and we made an appointment. He quickly wrote an estimate--$299 per window, any size, no tricks or traps. I opted for a slightly higher window quality, plus I added grids to mimic the look of the old windows, so I paid $365 per window, but Michael would have happily installed the cheaper ones. There was no pressure to upsell me or scare me into purchasing some bullshit I didn't need. It took less than 2 weeks for the windows to be made and shipped, and yesterday Robert showed up to install them. He worked very hard and efficiently, was polite, clean and didn't make a huge mess. He was here at 8:15 and left at around 5:30. Every window was perfectly installed and works just right. And the windows? Michael says they are the same ones Sears uses. We wanted to replace all our 24 windows. Michal's was the first company we called and also the last. We decided to go with Michal for two reasons: (1) He seemed nice and trustworthy, and (2) the technical comments he gave were consistent with what we had learned elsewhere. In the beginning, we were struggling in choosing between two brands. Michal recommended Simonton for its light, whereas we preferred Milgard for its style. Michal gave us quotes for both choices, and both quotes seemed competitive based on what we learned from our friends (again, we did not talk to other companies). Finally, we decided to go with Milgard. Then everything that followed was smooth. We waited for no more than 1.5 months before all the windows were ready. The installation took two days. There were two installation guys; both were professional and fast. The jobs they did were good, too. I did not have much interaction with them, but my wife was satisfied overall. I wanted to mention one story. One of the 24 windows was long and narrow. Because Milgard windows have wider trims, that window had extremely small glass area---apparently, it looked ugly. When Michal saw this ugly window, he immediately ordered another one with smaller trim, and, thus, wider glass area. He did not charge any extra for this. It's been only two months since the windows were installed. We couldn't tell anything other than the ordering and installation experience. read more

Their people got back to us in a timely manner (for both the initial contact as well as afterwards) and they truly seem to care that you are satisfied with their work. With that in mind, they provided a set estimate for each window and door, so there were no "surprise" expenses once things were finished. The turnaround was also quite speedy as they took care of the windows in a three-bedroom house in one workday. I recently started a home remodel and wanted to replace some of the windows of my aging house. I had 6 estimates from window installers in the area and not only was Michal's estimate the most competitive, he also seemed the most trust worthy. Once I selected Custom Exchange Windows, Michal came back to my house and took very precise measurements for each window, noted the grid pattern and number of grids for each, and we placed the order. When the windows came in from Simonton, exactly on the 3-4 scheduled Michal told me about, he scheduled the installation very quickly. We had just purchased a new home and were looking to replace the existing black pane windows. They looked decent but some were getting stuck and our sliding door was a nightmare to open. Michal was the only vendor we spoke to that brought samples of the actual windows his team was going to install. He presented us a new technique that does not compromise the structure of the window and saves you from years of leaks and mold building in your window/home. I turned to Yelp when I was looking for someone to replace the windows in my house. I decided on Custom Exchange since they have 5 star reviews across the board, and now I why. They were great! Michal was able to come out the following day after calling for an estimate. He was on time, very informative, and didn't try to sell us the most expensive windows. He told us that we could get the most expensive if we wanted, but that it wouldn't be necessary and that there were other window options that were just as good, but less expensive. When I called to make the appointment for the installation, I told him that I'd prefer to have it done before I went back to work from maternity leave. I have waited a few months to write this review because I wanted to be satisfied that the windows didn't leak or have any issues. Michal came out for a bid in December and is very no-nonsense. He doesn't give a huge seller's push or bells and whistles. And I liked that he offers a limited number of window-types (all good quality) so that I didn't spend weeks trying to narrow choices down for my small house in Oakland. I also liked that he wasn't patronizing; as a single homeowner, I am always leery of contractors who think I don't know what I am doing or how to make decisions. I had original windows in the house and while they functioned, they were getting ugly, the tracks dirty, sticking and decaying. It seemed time for a refresh. I did my online research and identified Custom Exchange as a reasonable choice. Michal came out as promised at the time agreed (rare, I've found). He comes from the country of my ancestors so I felt a kinship, but this was business. I had thirteen windows to replace, having had a handyman do three earlier as part of dry rot repairs. I selected Simonton windows but I'm not sure why. But they've worked out great. Anyway, Michal's bid was reasonable and I had a good feeling about him and his services so I didn't bother with competitive bids -- but you probably should. We were put on the calendar, several weeks later, two guys came out on time as scheduled in the morning and finished by two pm!! Wow! I thank the fellow yelpers for pointing me to Custom Exchange. I had single pane windows from 35 years ago in my house. Time came finally to change all of them. I had about 15 windows and 2 patio doors I needed to replace. I was adamant that I wanted them to be replaced like new construction. I went thru the estimations by the usual suspects like Home Depot and Renewal by Anderson etc. Needless to say those experiences left me depressed since cost seemed outrageous and their high pressure sales tactics were horrendous. Finally, I looked thru Yelp and found Custom Exchange. I read all the reviews and decided to call them. Michal came in measured the windows and gave me a bid for both Simonton and Millgard Tuscony vinyl windows . I opted to go with Millgard Tuscony and added some optional features. His bid was fair and compared to what I got from others before, very reasonable. Is that the cheapest price? I do not know and did not call anybody else to find out as their price seemed reasonable and I liked the no pressure sales process. I decided to go with Custom Exchange. Michael came back one more time to take precise measurements for the order and I gave a deposit and placed the order. On the appointed day, Robert came along with a couple of his assistants and started installation. Everything went as expected. They ripped out the old windows with frames as I wanted the windows installed like new construction. It took 3 full days and 2 half days because we had rain at the end of the week. They were courteous and cleaned up after themselves well. I am just getting my handyman to finish painting the trim. Windows look wonderful and I am looking forward to them lasting a long time. Its been close to a month now since my install. My only complaint is with Simonton windows at this point. I have a window that was scratched in between the 2 pains and I also have a latch not working properly and a screen coming out in the corner. I contacted Michal the day of installation and he forwarded the scratch problem. I spoke to Michal, just after that about the latch and screen when I noticed them later that day, I believe. He said to just tell the warranty person when they show up, but I did send the info to add to the service order anyway. 2 weeks later I got an email for a photo of the window. Nothing on the other 2 items. I sent a photo of all 3. No response. Still have heard nothing back from them. Emailed 2 more times just asking if they got my photos and have my request for all 3 items. No response. I will have to call now. I like to have things in writing, so making calls is not how I like to handle problems, but I am no other option at this point. I knew it might take time to get someone out here, but they should be able to say yes or no, they got my photos and requests for warranty work. As far as Custom Exchange Windows, Michal was very easy to work with. I'm sure I asked too many questions, but it is a lot of money and a little nerve-racking for me to spend this. I got several bids and his was the best and I felt confident with him. His reviews and BBB rating wasn't the best in comparison with another top vender I was looking at, but I just looked at the recent reviews and felt that whatever problems there may have been in the past, they have improved or corrected their situation as the many current customers all seemed to be very happy. His installers were very nice and courteous too. Had a little conflict with them when it came to whether the windows should be cleaned when I was trying to check for flaws and needed to know if things I was seeing were dirty or a problem with the window. We already spotted one. I wasn't about to go out of a 2nd story window to the roof or climb a ladder to see if the spot was dirt or a problem. This was handled to my satisfaction after I made a call to Michal. I had 8 windows and a sliding doors so this wasn't a huge task on their part. They look beautiful and NO MORE GRIDS! To start, I had spoken to 5 window companies and Michal was the only one that personally came out to meet me instead of just giving me details over the phone. It was a great first impression and Custom Exchange already had the early advantage. Michal was patient in explaining the features of the windows, differences between brands and options, and offered his own suggestions as well. A few days after our initial appointment, my wife and I had a baby and I just got swept up in the busy-ness of things and windows were at the bottom of my priority list. However, Michal would still check in every once in awhile just to see how things were going and never gave us any pressure to take his business. It was about 3 months later before we finally met again. I had cheaper bids lined up on the plate but things are not always about money. We originally were considering only getting about 10 windows done but decided to do the whole house in the end (on our own accord, no sales pressure). Michal kept us updated on the timeline of things and after we set an appointment, his two guys came over and finished everything in one day. The house felt immediately quieter, warmer, and everything just looks so much better. The only gripe I have is that the scheduling wasn't so flexible. I was out of town for a few days and with the baby and work, my wife's schedule wasn't too flexible either. I tried to get our appointment moved back one week but because Custom Exchange had other appointments, they could ONLY do that day and it kind of threw a wrench in our day, but it's understandable since they have a business to run. All in all, when we had initially decided to upgrade our windows, I was dreading it. I knew nothing about windows and I didn't want to deal with the sales pressure. I recently hired Michal to replace 11 windows and a sliding door. He recommended the Simonton brand and I checked with a friend who still loves her Simonton windows after 20 years. Michal's quote was way more reasonable than another one I got. My husband was surprised that he never even asked for a deposit. From the first visit, Michal was prompt and always called back at the exact dates he promised. He was friendly and efficient. We were pleased that they could do the entire job in one day. That's because Michal's assistants Robert and Joseph worked steadily and systematically, and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards. I know one customer complained about the two speaking Polish to each other, but I rather they speak to each other in their native tongue than mess up my job. I know at least two people who live in my subdivision stopped by outside to enquire about Michal's company. One lady even asked for a business card. My next door neighbor told me the next day that the windows look very attractive and he was impressed with the workers too. The new windows look sturdier than the flimsy ones being replaced.
