I was very disappointed with Cup O' Jo. I love the town of Clayton and want to support local shops but I can pretty much guarantee that after my experience, I won't be back. My mom and I stopped by here on a Thursday morning. Once you walk inside, there is an assortment of of nick nacks and coffee and non-coffee shop related items. It was on the verge of clutter. The place looked like it needed to be cleaned up a bit and was very dimly lit to almost too dark once you were inside. They have tables and chairs as well as a kids corner with book and games and a few leather chairs near a faux fire place. I could have overlooked the bad if the service was good which it was not We walked up to the counter and they have an assortment of "fresh" pastries and bagels. It looked like they had been sitting there for awhile. Dry and crumbly. The barista behind the counter didn't even look up from what he was doing and asked "what do you want" I ordered a peppermint green tea and my mom ordered a latte for here. It was about $7(kind of pricey) but since we were going to stay and enjoy out drinks, they would at least come in mugs, right? WRONG they were served in "to-go" cups which wouldn't normally bother me but we just wanted to sit and chat and enjoy our time and i felt like it would just be better if we left sorry Cup O' JO. Closed on Sundays?? Really?? Like many people the only times I can go relax at a coffeehouse are the weekends. No decent coffee place should be closed on Sundays. I agree with other reviewer's complaints about not enough hours and unenthusiastic service but the overall star rating is way too low for the quality of the coffee. I am picky about my coffee and finding a place in the area besides peets or starbucks is awesome. The atmosphere inside is cozy and bigger than it seems from the outside. A teeny downtown like Clayton's is lucky to have such a good coffee place. I do wish it had longer hours and was open Sunday's but I think good reviews is the way to make that happen, not bad ones :) read more

I'm a fan of this place ... The coffee was pretty good, better than peets or Starbucks, and I'm a bit of a coffee snob. But what made it 5 stars was the cute atmosphere inside and the greeting by the two working there. The place has a play area for kids which is awesome with trains, books, coloring, chalkboard walls, and more. The place has a fireplace and feels like a living room ... You want to curl up, sip your coffee, and read a book. I love these kind of places. The people were super friendly and loved chatting it up with them. The fire in the fireplace may be fake, but that doesn't make this place any less cozy. The scattered plants and exposed wood give it the feel of a mountain cabin, and the big over-stuffed chairs make it hard to leave. Plus there's a little play room where you can bring your kids to read and play. Adorable. The coffee was a little underwhelming, but who cares - I love this place. read more

Cutest little coffee shop I have been to in awhile! There are plenty of books and nooks to snuggle and enjoy your coffee. The owner is a funny guy, he gets down to business and is great at juggling multiple orders. (Some people confuse this for grumpiness) Today I ordered a hazelnut macchiato and was looking at the pastries and asked what kind of scones were out. He answered lemon scone and it is so good. Well, I went ahead and bought it. The lemon is just right and the scone is pretty moist. His recommendation was perfect. Thanks Cup of Joe!!! read more

This is a very cozy coffeeshop. Before my first visit, I was unsure about the place, but once I walked in, I was pleased to have a wonderful coffee experience. The staff is very personable, and seems to enjoy conversing with all of the customers. This is the place to have a nice, quiet cup of coffee and read the paper or your favorite book. Best enjoyed when you have a few minutes to spare! Recently, Canesa's Sandwiches took up residence within Cup O' Jo, which is a huge boon for the business. These are perhaps the best sandwiches I have ever experienced. The sandwiches are handmade, the meat freshly sliced to order, and every sandwich made with care. You might have to wait five to ten minutes for your sandwich, depending on the crowd, but it is well worth it. I highly recommend visiting. Though all of the sandwiches are wonderful, I recommend Vinny's Stromboli. This is best enjoyed with a fresh fruit smoothie! read more

Great prices for the verity of goods; coffee, teas, fraps, whole fruit smoothies, candy, baked goods, Ice cream, ect.) there is a quaint children's room in the back, lulling classical music and every bit of interior looks as though is been transported from the Netherlands. The best coffee I've tasted since many years living here. The place looks like a cozy hut encrusted in the center of the quiet town of Clayton. I felt in the hall of a hotel in the Alps. The attendant is not talking much, but he tries to make you feel at home having the best coffee in your's grandmother's time. It's worth it to stop in calm and sit in one of the armchairs near the fireplace to watch the details of the decoration, some remembering Brazil, famous for the quality of strong black coffee and its derivations. I think this is the only coffee place in the little downtown area of Clayton. At least, it was the only one I could find. It seems to have been opened in the front of a building that must have been an old house. Very cozy. There's a room just for children to play in. Love the fake fireplace and comfy chairs. They also run a sandwich shop out of the place. You'll notice this when you get to the counter. And from what I could tell - they served great sandwiches (people seemed to be willing to wait quite a while to have some lunch). But here's why I couldn't go higher than three stars: if you are looking for a full-sensory coffeehouse experience - - you'll miss it because of the deli smell. I love this place. I have read the reviews that the server is grumpy and I honestly feel this is just an American beef because everyone has to smile all the time and try and have a relationship with you! I like this guy, he is slow to warm up but is a real character. He danced a jig and sang happy birthday to me in Portugese as my friend had set up a tab for me as a treat! He lets us move a table into the sun across the road and walks our coffees out! I'm not a coffee drinker but I have stepped in a few times for a scoop of ice cream with the kids. I like that there is an affordable option for a quick treat in downtown Clayton, but I was very disappointed our last visit when the owner was rude and grouchy towards my kids. He yelled multiple times about the kids touching his coin operated candy machine which apparently was already broken, and when my picky son asked to sample one of the ice cream flavors that he had never had before the owner made a big deal about it. I couldn't wait to get out of his store as soon as I got my ice cream. He made us afraid to ask for another spoon for the other ice cream we ordered for fear he might snap at us again. read more

I really hate to leave a bad review for a small business. I consider myself easy-to-please and am pretty forgiving of indie shops' flaws... But I just can't do it with this place. I am no coffee snob but every time I come here I have to admit that my drink tastes terrible. I once took 2 friends here from out of town and I actually had to apologize to them for their poor experience. The bar setup is also a bit bizarre and I always have concerns about cleanliness... I wish we Clayton-ites had another coffee option downtown, as I think having some healthy competition would help Cup-O-Jo raise its game. Also... no wifi access- a major bummer. read more

A CUSTOMER WAS SLAPPED....So no stars for my first visit as a new resident of Clayton. An older gentlemen and his mother came in. The mother had dementia and was constantly taking to the older guy making coffee. This seemed to bother him immensely, her son came too close to the side of the coffee bar to explain what she said (different language) and the worker smacked his arms away. OMG I was stunned . You shouldn't even be able to have a business. Never ever again. If I was that guy I would have dipped him on his head. I had to give it one star to post this. Should have a no star option. read more
