Just wanted to find a local spot for work a couple of hours - saw some locals hanging out front, so thought that was a good sign. When I ordered my coffee, carrying my personal cup, i felt like I was being judged how much of an inconvenience I'd be. Got a half-decaf latte that felt made with just enough effort to be passable. I asked if there was wifi, and the owner apologized that they didn't. Made me realize why the place was mostly empty. read more

We went here mid-morning on a random weekday. We were traveling from out of town. The person behind the counter lacked any social skills. The hazelnut latte was full of sugar and made from brewed old coffee and not from espresso. The ice cream is old, semi-melted and gross. The place is old and dirty too. Horrible service. The place is nice, but the worker (older guy on the weekdays) has an attitude and is very rude. The person forgets that we are customers. He reminds me of the soup nazi from Seinsfield. Two times he has talked to me in a way that was very disrespectful, and I wont let be a third time. Great spot in the neighborhood for some lattes and a quick snack. My fav here is the French vanilla latte and the service is pretty quick. The place has plenty of seating space insid and some spots outside as well. read more

We just needed a quick start to the day and saw this place. I'm amazed at how cozy it is here, with stone walls and a fireplace. Ordered their last two ham and cheese croissants. Cooked perfectly, and cut into bite-sized pieces, which I appreciate. But the best part is that they actually know how to brew tea! They gave it to me after it had steeped properly and DIDN'T leave the bag in the way most coffee shops would (leaving it in makes the tea bitter!). It's also the perfect temperature to drink right away. John's coffee was a bit hotter, since he didn't get any creamer but it is still super tasty. We will definitely be coming here again! The service was great and fast, even though the owner thought it took too long. I'm surprised they don't have more customers. read more

Wow! I found a coffee place in Clayton, a quiet area that like Mayberry of the Bay Area. Cup O' Jo is the place to go to. Nice quiet place to sit down and relax. The guy that works there is very friendly. He is willing to have a conversation with you. I tried this place out because I got lost in Clayton. This place was nice. Thought I would give it another try, as two years ago I had a poor experience. Sadly, nothing has changed as of a couple of weeks ago. How can this place still be in business. I like to try different things, so I asked- what's yours specialty or anything you highly recommend. He turned around and mumbled something pointing to the menu behind him. Tried this place for the first time after walking past it for years. We got a white mocha- it's the best one I've tasted this side of the bay bridge. I do like my coffee on the sweeter side so if that's not your vibe it may not be for you. The man behind the counter was nice to my two year old who was enamored with a little toy car near the register. I don't go to coffee shops looking to make conversation or friends with the staff so I don't really understand the comments about him being "unfriendly". Just wanted to write about an experience I had at Cup O' Jo in Clayton. Let me start by saying I absolutely adore this town and most of the businesses in it. A friend and I ordered some sandwiches from Canesa's, but it was really cold and rainy. I spotted the cute little coffee shop and figured if I bought a drink there, it would likely be ok to eat our sandwiches inside. There might be mixed opinions about this as I know some businesses are picky about outside food, but Clayton is so small and I just assumed the small businesses would support each other and be ok with this. I spent $7 on a small latte and I was not even there 5 minutes about to bite into my sandwich as the employee walked over to our table. He had a phone on his hand and said the owner was watching me through surveillance at home and demanded we leave. I asked if he knew we were customers and just supported his business as well, the employee just pointed to the door. There were hardly any customers inside as it is, no one was waiting for our table, but I truly thought it was unsettling that the owner is watching customers via video camera all day and being petty about this. Will continue to support my other favorite businesses in Clayton, Cup O' Jo's will not be getting business from me or my friends and family. read more

Super cute coffee shop right in the "downtown" portion of Clayton. The man making the coffee, not sure if he was the owner, was kind and efficient. The coffee was okay, did the job, and wasn't too expensive. However, while I was sitting inside and working people were super rude to the man behind the counter. While I was there, it was a one-man operation and quite a few customers were in line. It isn't a Starbucks, so it surprises me that people would be so rude about their coffee taking a few minutes longer to prepare. Overall, I would come back if I'm in the area! read more

In San Francisco, I had a favorite place for chai lattes. After they closed, I could never find anything close to it and when we moved to Concord two years ago I still couldn't find anything. I haven't tried other drinks from here aside from the chai latte and it's made exactly the way my favorite cafe used to make it. The shop is small, quiet, with cozy seating inside and out. On the plus side, they accept cash, card, tap, and Apple Pay. The prices are so fair as well. What struck me about this place is how the owner offers to fix my chai if i don't like it. A lot of people say that he's a bit gruff and lacks customer service, but honestly this guy seems nice just quiet. I've never had anyone else tell me to try my drink before leaving and honestly, that's pretty above and beyond. read more

First time trying and honestly have lived in Clayton most of my life! I'm in shock I've never been here before. Met my wedding photographer here with my mother in law, who is super picky about chai lattes. She Ordered and LOVED It!! Super hard to find chai with good flavor, it was so delicious I could smell the aroma!!!! Ordered iced coffee and it was also really good! I was nervous because of the comments about the rude staff, however the guy was very kind and answered all our questions. One of the best-made espresso drinks I have had in 50 years of imbibing; perfect balance of milk to coffee, well-roasted beans. The place is that classic hodge-podge of eccentric items that endears these non-chain cafe to me. This place has hands down the best coffee in town. I ordered my coffee black, and even without any added cream or sugar there was a mild sweetness to it. That is the taste of great quality coffee. The gentleman who runs the shop may sound stern at first, but in actuality he is very sweet. I haven't tried any of the scones or sandwiches they provide, but they look delicious. I was very disappointed with Cup O' Jo. I love the town of Clayton and want to support local shops but I can pretty much guarantee that after my experience, I won't be back. My mom and I stopped by here on a Thursday morning. Once you walk inside, there is an assortment of of nick nacks and coffee and non-coffee shop related items. It was on the verge of clutter. The place looked like it needed to be cleaned up a bit and was very dimly lit to almost too dark once you were inside. They have tables and chairs as well as a kids corner with book and games and a few leather chairs near a faux fire place. I could have overlooked the bad if the service was good which it was not We walked up to the counter and they have an assortment of "fresh" pastries and bagels. It looked like they had been sitting there for awhile. Dry and crumbly. The barista behind the counter didn't even look up from what he was doing and asked "what do you want" I ordered a peppermint green tea and my mom ordered a latte for here. It was about $7(kind of pricey) but since we were going to stay and enjoy out drinks, they would at least come in mugs, right? WRONG they were served in "to-go" cups which wouldn't normally bother me but we just wanted to sit and chat and enjoy our time and i felt like it would just be better if we left sorry Cup O' JO.
