One problem with any mechanic with limited experience on Lexus is they do not know that you often can not use after market parts, and knowing what parts can't be after market parts is clear to experienced Lexus mechanics. The last auto shop I tried in McKinleyville angered me, primarily for keeping my car for 2 weeks, out of their ignorance, which I had to have towed to the Toyota dealership (too old for them to work on), and then towed again to an electric shop in Eureka. Of course I had to pay that foreign auto shop in McKinleyville for a useless diagnosis as i had already told them it was likely the engine computer. The Eureka shop had to wait for a specialist to work on the engine computer. I looked for Aaron because I had tuned up my Lexus and accidentally messed up a spark plug gap which was a new experience for me. But he also did another adjustment to make it run super smooth as before I got the engine computer fixed. He charged me very little, which was a surprise. I was so impressed with him, I decided to forget that some Lexus owners have been able to get their timing chain changed as late as 160,000 miles. I decided I would get it done as I was still under 100,000 miles as one is supposed to. The water pump has to be changed at the same time. Again, he did it at a very fair price. I only drive the car 4000 miles a year now, but hope to take our 2023 hybrid subaru to him next time we need work. My wife may want to continue using McCrae Subaru who are great, but hey, we are retired now and on a budget!

So I came North Bay with some trepidation. What did I find: they are very clear and upfront with charges. Texted links provide you with all findings and repair options, along with easy ways to approve just the things you want repaired (in addition, Austin was great in walking me through all the options by phone). The price was fair and the work was done right. After this initial experience, I had them check out my other vehicle (I was thinking this was going to be a pricey fix). Surprisingly, it only needed a minor adjustment and my dread of a $$$$ cost turned out to be so reasonable. An unscrupulous mechanic could have tacked on unnecessary work, especially since I had come in thinking it needed several parts replaced. Coincidentally, in casual conversation with coworkers after the repair, I had 2 of them tell me North Bay is the only place they will take their cars also. On Saturday, around 8:30 a.m. I see one of our tires has a huge screw sticking out and slowly losing air. I scrambled to find a tire repair shop and not many were open. So, I called Simply Performace Auto in Arcata. Spoke to, "Danny" and he told me to bring it down. When I arrived he immediately had one of his guy pull my spare and change out my tire. When, I asked him how much I owed him he said,"Nothing, you better hurry to your sons graduation". He could have easily over charged me as I was in a somewhat hurry. I did insist on compensating for his service and tipped him for the help. I have been in this group for 4 years and have seen a few post regarding, "Honest" mechanics in the area. Based on Dannys action I would definetly consider him not only a nice person, but very honest. Congratulations to all the 2026 class at Cal Poly Humbolt. Cheers to continued success.
