They charged my husband over $1400 to fix some wiring, after quoting $450. then my husband had to pay out of pocket for the part that should have been put on at the time. I would never recommend going to them for anything. Dropped my car off for some electrical issues, after not hearing back, I called 30 min before closing time to get an update. The guy who answered the phone had no idea what was going on with the car, no paperwork at all. I told him I wanted to pick the car up and was gonna think about bringing it back, he told me not to bring it back ever again. I had used Dan's Auto Electric before and had good experiences with them. But after my recent experience, I can't recommend them. I brought my truck in to diagnose an electrical problem that was draining the battery, and install a TCM module that Dave's Auto Electric had previously diagnosed as bad. I was hoping both problems were related since they showed up around the same time. Would have taken it back to Dave's since they're closer, but I wasn't happy with my last experience with them either. The major issues I had with my recent experience at Dan's is that it took them 2 months to fix it and their extreme markup on parts. Because of the age of the vehicle, I had to get a salvaged TCM. Then they said it was the 4x4 switch, so I bought a used one. Then they said the TCM I bought didn't work. They wanted to charge $250 for a part I bought on Ebay for $80, the going rate, so I bought another one on Ebay. Then they said it also needed the Central Timing Module replaced. I figured this time I'd have them purchase it since then they'd be responsible if it didn't work. They charged $599 for the module that sells for $150 on Ebay. Probably should have taken a chance and bought my own. I made so many trips their during the 2 months they had my truck, and every time Larry looked at me like he never knew me. The repair bill ended up being $1600 when the original estimate was around $250. At least it works now, but you'd think with a 400% markup on parts they could afford to eat the 3% charge for using a credit card. Yeah, beware, they tack that on as extra if you want to use a credit card. read more

I'll give it a two since in the end they did fix the main issue, but only after multiple unsolicited "fixes" and a wrongful order for a part that needed replacing. Originally needed a new water pump, and supposedly an engine control module, which they did call to inform me of after dropping it off. Tacked on a new tensioner pulley without asking (I'm guessing they broke the old one) and then installed the wrong ECM and sent me on my way. After maxing out at about 10 mph driving down the street I quickly realized they never bothered to give it a test drive. The mechanic who did the replacement told me about how the ECM has a fuzzy logic and will adjust parameters as I drive it more and said maybe just stick to back roads for now, but I wasn't convinced. After some looking around he realized he ordered the wrong ECM for a different type of transmission. Another couple of weeks pass for a replacement order and now they've also replaced a relay, again no phone call. Maybe I've been spoiled by Firestone, but I really appreciate when I get updates and requests for repairs from the mechanic before they start tacking on things that I could do myself or maybe can't finance at the moment. $1500 dollars and a vehicle-free month later, I'm on my way. I know the auto service industry in Humboldt can be slim pickings, but I would recommend going elsewhere if you can. This is the most frustrating mechanic experience that I've had. read more

Took in my car in for an inspection. The motor was vibrating when starting. LuAnn fit me in as soon as she could. When they figured out the problem they inviting me under the hood to see first hand. I have had several electrical issues on my vehicles worked on by Dan's Auto Electric over the years. I had a headlight switch replaced in the past, and recently had my turn signal system fixed both issues were on my Chevy Silverado 4X4 truck. The actual bills were less than the quoted estimated price for those repairs!! A very helpful staff there, and they know their way around an automotive electrical system! I was sent to them years ago by my neighbor who went to school with Dan, and I would highly recommend them for vehicle electrical issue repairs. Plus Luanne is a pleasure to deal with when making appointments since they are a very busy shop, and while paying for the costs of repairs/ she always has a smile! read more

While Louann is very pleasant, I had problems with their charges. I called to correct some information at 8:10; I called back at 8:45 and was told that the guy had diagnosed the problem already and had ordered the part. For 35 minutes of diagnosis they wanted to charge over $200. They reduced it a bit after I objected. They also said that I needed a new battery. I did. However, the first price they gave me was $380. When I questioned that, Dan said he had made a mistake and it would cost about $220. So I went to Interstate Batteries where they charged me $130. I believe Dan's Auto does good work, but be careful how they charge. I have also had experience dealing with the very unfriendly guy there--he doesn't help matters. read more

Larry and Leann quoted me $200 for a what turned out to be a $20 repair. Took my '65 Mustang for a possible alternator replacement. They told me that it would be $200 for an alternator replacement and a new regulator. Luckily my Father was in town and knew that the regulator could be checked before replacement of the alternator. Larry told me that the regulator could not be tested without the replacement. Turns out that all I needed was $17 cable and it's good as new. read more

Rogers Transmission sent me here because engine light wasn't transmission it was evap something, something. Turned out it was bad gas cap and wrong sparks plugs. Larry asked me if the car was running rough. I said no. After I got my 2004 Honda and drove to Hydesville, I couldn't believe the difference. It runs so smoothly. Only problem, I had to watch my speedometer. Felt like I was going 55-60 and I was up to 80. Lovely people. I'm a grandmother and don't need no coppers pulling me over. Was recommended here by Firestone to replace my push start button on my 2015 Honda. Was so annoyed I had to replace such a thing on a newish vehicle. You can't trust any of them they will overcharge you for what little work they are actually capable of. Their knowledge of cars is laughable. I brought my car here and it took them 500 dollars of labor just to find out what was wrong. Beware: Dishonest mechanics with predatory tactics. Once your car is at their shop expect a call saying something is wrong that wasn't wrong when you brought it in. Dan or Larry will tell you your car is unsafe and this additional work must be completed before you get your car back. Price quotes for parts will magically be much higher on the invoice. But wait, there's more! Once you are out of money and extra mad, the new parts your car "needed" won't even work right. By then, you won't want Dan or Larry near your car so you get to pay someone else to fix their mess. read more

While In the waiting room waiting on my car to be fixed, I kept hearing the workers talking, not about my car but their personal lives. They told me to bring my car in even though the check engine light had gone off and said they could still find what the code was. After 6 hours of no contact i had to call their place to try to get my car back on a friday afternoon. Each time i called i talked to a guy (i think his name is larry) who has some of worst costumer service skills i have ever come across. All of that to be charged $150 to tell me they couldnt find anything wrong with my car. I took my car here because my ignition (the switch) wasn't always working, and my high beams weren't coming on. I also ended up needing an alternator (I knew that coming in). All problems were fixed...the alternator I chose a remanufactured one, to save $100 over a lifetime warranty one. I wasn't happy, but spending $700, one tries to save where one can. The ignition switch was repaired with no trouble. I feared I would need a new lock cylinder, but this was unfounded. The main criticism I have is the high beam problem. Apparently the multi switch (turn signals, lights) was having a problem. Why, I don't know. Wear? Tarnished contacts? No explanation, but in any case Dan replaced the switch. The thing is, the new switch is shorter than the original and doesn't turn smoothly (it sort of...has to be pushed into a turn before it sticks). So not only do I have difficulty reaching the new switch behind my steering wheel, but it doesn't work as well. Needless to say, I didn't notice this until a while after I left and realised what the issue was. Irritating; I used to enjoy my signalling (seriously). Anyway, a competent repairman, I'm sure. read more

First experience was good when I had a relay fry, charged minimum labor and had it figured out quiet. Last time I went in August '13 to have my glow plugs computer system repaired, with some regular electrical inspection. Instead of the main reason I went and the assurance they would contact me before proceeding to work on the truck, I got there and they had 4 people rewiring my rear lights which worked last I checked. I was told they installed a bypass on the computer system to get my glow plugs working. The total was 700 bucks and months later when it got cold the glow plugs didn't work for squat. I went back and they told me that they didn't fix them and it would be an estimated 700 bucks additional! My girlfriend was there when I specifically told them that issue was the purpose of bringing my truck there. I ended up taking it somewhere else to get the bypass they installed undone and have the factory parts restored. It cost nearly a grand for the repair since the glow plugs were fried by the bypass, since it didn't shut off when they are heated properly. The glow plugs were swollen and could have broke off into the engine so the labor took longer to replace them. Considering filing in small claims and have lots of documentation and witnesses to them wasting my time and money. Until I could afford the recent repair I had to plug the 750 watt block heater in before I could go anywhere if the engine wasn't warm this past winter. read more

Where to start? SCAMMERS!!! Or completely incapable of doing the job right. However since they mentioned they had been in business for 55 years I'm going to go with the obvious. We took our SUV here in October and were told there were multiple issues draining our battery, $636 later. Stereo had to be disconnected, ignition switch and door switch were all supposedly bad. No issues paid and left. Shortly after the door ajar light started to go on and the alarm started to act up, this had never happened prior to the repairs. Yet we waited to return because the light would go off, that was until they battery died and we had to jump start it. We take it back and were told our battery was so bad that they needed to install one before they could even begin to diagnose the problem, but quick to mention they could install one right then for $200. Well I informed them it was a new battery and still under warranty, so I would call AAA. Long story short the AAA tow truck came, after my husband drove it home and to our surprise the battery wasn't bad at all; they ran the test 3 times. We just had a drain somewhere in the vehicle. I called Dan the next day and he didn't even let me finish telling him what happened before he passed the phone on without informing me he was done talking (RUDE). He knew the call was coming, because like the tow truck driver stated, there was no way an electrical shop would make such an error. I was hesitant to take it back, even more so now after hearing many stories from others when asking around about this shop. However, the receptionist told me to let them make it right and to bring it back and they would diagnose it and we would go from there. Shame on me for putting myself back in that position. Of course RUDE DAN took my call after my vehicle was there for a few hours and said he checked 1 of the 2 parts he installed previously, and that they were fine and did I want him to continue to diagnose at the regular rate? Of course not! This is when things got even more ridiculous. He and the second receptionist are the rudest people ever. The receptionist kept saying my battery was a POS and I had to ask what that was, and she had no problem loudly informing me it was a "piece of shit"! WOW!!! CLASS isn't what you'll find here or honesty. There is no such thing as customer service. RUDE! RUDE! RUDE! Now I will go elsewhere and pay to make sure the parts he installed were actually installed and get the car properly diagnosed. Small claims is the next route and I'm sure they've had their fair share already. GO ELSEWHERE! THEY ARE SCAMMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!! I would give zero stars to this place. I brought my car here with a cooling system problem. They wanted to charge me $700 to replace my "leaking" radiator. When I explained, again, that there was never an issue with loosing coolant, and asked them to explain their logic, Dan told me to leave and find another mechanic. Additionally, they never checked on the fuses, relays or sensors like I asked them to since I was aware that the fans weren't working properly. I guess these folks don't think it's their job to provide the reasoning behind their diagnostics. They seemed to think a customer should blindly hand them large sums of money with no solid basis. I've never been treated so demeaningly in my life. Incompetent mechanics and abhorrent customer service left me firmly convinced they were trying to rip me off. NOPE! Had them work on a ignition issue for my car. They had the car for more than a week- kept changing the time it would be ready. They charged me over $700.00 to fix it.
