We came here on a Sunday shortly before they closed. The restaurant is in a shopping center with plenty of parking. We are from Tampa and live in San Antonio and there is no Cuban food there, so we are always looking for it when we travel. We got a medianoche, a cubano, croquettas, papa rellanos, and a guava and cheese pastry to go. They made the sandwiches to order in the back and the rest were in display cases on the counter. We got the potato balls and Cuban sandwich which is basic as it comes pork, ham, mayo, mustard, cheese, pickles can't go wrong with that didn't have a price on it. I don't member how much it cost they didn't have prices on anything. We also got the potato balls soon as you bite into the potato it tasted watery like it was frozen and it retained water, if I had to come back, I'll get the Cuban sandwich again. The employee taking the order was nice enough but from there it was disappointing. My daughter and I ordered 5 pastelitos. They were cold and stale. When asked to warm a few of them, the employee took them and brought them back soggy and they had been warmed in a microwave. Don't ever warm pastelitos in a microwave! My daughter wanted to leave them on the table and I am sorry I convinced her to take them out with us as they were truly inedible. We had lived in Miami for many years and have had many delicious Cuban pastelitos, so we were very disappointed in this place. As a disclaimer, I have high standards for Cuban food being part Cuban and from Miami. That said, Cuba Bakery was a great fix for pastellitos and a sandwich being that there aren't many places like this here in Texas and I would give the store 3.5 stars if I could. We were lucky enough to arrive on Saturday around 11 am with no one in the store, which was what I was worried about reading some other reviews especially since we wanted to try a couple different things. Service was friendly and easy to order despite there seeming to be only two employees. About four other parties came in after us though and they had a wait to order, but it wasn't anything exceptionally long and everyone seemed okay. My party ordered cafe con leche, cortadito, tostada, ropa vieja sandwich (I wanted pan con bistec but they weren't serving that), a chicken empanada and guava pastries. The flavor of the coffee was not what I'm used to (like a trusty Cafe Bustelo) nor was the Cuban bread (a little heavier than the typical thin crunchy outside and soft inside). The ropa vieja was still delicious as were the pastellitos and food was fairly priced. The restaurant felt like a hole in the wall - bright orange, Cuban themed decor, typical bakery displays - so definitely don't take your date here, it's just a place to quickly pick up or grub on a couple sandwiches at lunch. I would actually say the ambiance is what felt most like smaller Miami Cuban restaurants! Was also lovely to take my full order in Spanish. It felt like home :) So overall, if you're looking for your fix of Cuban food and want to support a business like this, you should try this place if you're already in the area. Traveling from miles away to try this place with expectations just as high as mine, however, you might be better off learning how to make these foods at home. The prices are right. The pastelitos tasted good (had the cream cheese, guava and cheese, guava, and ground beef pastelitos). The Cuban coffee were legit. Yes, the offerings are scarce - the display case is rather tiny compared to what I'm used to seeing. Yes, the ambience leaves a lot to be desired. It's desolate, empty, and mostly undecorated, unlike the colorful Cuban bakeries that are all over Miami. Yes, the fillings inside the pastelitos were ok the skimpier side. They are open Thursday- Sunday for takeout also call for catering! This place has guava and cheese with balls and I'm so freaking happy I found it ! The lady at the front was super sweet very informative about all of the food and the menu. They have a cute spot and mouth watering selection. Price is very good. Husband and I drove an hour to visit this place as there are not many Cuban restaurants in Texas that I've come across, but I desperately miss the food. Unfortunately when we got there, we were greeted with a line of customers all sort of angrily waiting for their order to be taken. There were no pastries anywhere and a small black chalk sign at the register saying that they were only serving one type of sandwich. Very disappointed but decided that one sandwich was better than nothing so we waited around. 15 minutes go by. 2-3 employees walked in and out of the back and moved things around but no ones orders were taken and it was hard to figure out what was even going on. We ended up leaving. Sad experience. We won't be coming back but I had really hoped it would have been different. Edit: owner has written back to me to call me a liar. Make with their integrity what you will. They messed up but im the liar. What a world. Second edit: the owners reply publicly is even more hilarious. As you will see by many other reviews of the place, my experience is shared. And maybe since I haven't gone back, they got rid of their workers but when I went that was not the case. This business won't survive for long and its sad but when youre unable to take criticism and improve and instead try to attack your customers, you'll never build success. Look at any kitchen nightmare episode with similar attitude from owners. Hopefully Austin gets a better representation for Cuba than this place. We deserve it. read more

Being that I moved out here recently with my family..we were looking for a good cuban bakery as we've had great Cuban food in Southern California at a place called, "Porto's"..We were hoping that it would be just as good since we've read such reviews here on Yelp. Unfortunately we were disappointed and it was NOTHING like the wonderful Porto's. We made an attempt to visit Cuba Bakery on a Monday since it stated on Yelp that it was open until 8. On the door, it says 8am - . Its blank on when it was closed..so that was one disappointment. How do you not post a closing time on your door? So we made a second attempt since we had a mad craving for yummy cuban desserts and yummy sandwiches...but this place broke my heart. We ordered a few sandwiches..One was the cuban sandwich. Barely any meat..I don't call a skimpy piece of meat for a sandwhich a sandwich when you can barely even taste it..No flavor and the bread was just "ok"..Nothing outstanding..not even toasted but a plain roll. Bleh!. We also ordered the sandwich with lechon. Horrible. There was no flavor. Totally bland,..dried out pork, filled with onions..no sauce..nothing to give it ANY flavor and the bread was chewy. WTH! I shake my head at such sandwiches and am ashamed. I'm used to flavorful sandwiches with heavenly flavors and stuffed with meat and yummy goodness. As if that was the only bad thing..we had a tamale and that wasn't any good...Again, no flavor! My brother makes better tamales than this place! They skimped on the meat inside the tamale and it was basically cornmeal..You'd need a magnifying glass to find the darn meat. Grr..Another kicker was trying one of their potato balls. We bought two only to eat one since it was again..an item with no flavor. The meat was flavorless and blended in so much with the potato because of the lack of flavor. How can this place exist when none of the items we've had were so tasteless? We even ordered one of their pasteries..it was pretty much an apple turnover.Out of all the things were ordered that was the only thing that was ok..not great..just ok. Had I known it was going to be such a great disappointment, I would've rather tried the cuban food truck, Texas Cuban. Their sandwiches look a heck of a lot more flavorful..and their sandwiches even come with plantain chips..like other Cuban places..not a cheap bag of Lay's potato chips that Cuba Bakery does. *sigh* I gave this place a chance and will not be coming back. Good food, weird service. Being gluten free, I asked for the one non-bread plate (meat, beans, plantains or something). They were out, and with the language barrier, I asked can I get anything else similar- any kind of meat, beans and some plantains or tostones. They said no, so I just got tostones and sweet plantains. The family got empanadas and desserts. Desserts were too sweet, but the empanadas I'm told we're pretty good. I am a huge fan of family-owned businesses and I would love to give Cuba Bakery & Cafe a better review. I have tried to visit many times and they have been closed. When they are open their selection is very slim. The menu is difficult to decipher from so I just ordered from the case. ZERO stars to the co-owner and lady in the front, who simply does not seem to have the personality for hospitality or restaurant service or shows any welcoming gratitude or happiness at incoming customers. Others have commented on the sterile atmosphere of this business and the lack of caring for working hours (today, Tuesday, they had yet to open at 8:10AM, mind you , this is a bakery). I have no idea why this place is called Cuban Bakery , there's barely any sweets and they were "out" of most of the sandwiches.

I haven't actually been in the store, but I am looking forward to coming in and trying some more of their treats! My neighbors have brought home their empanadas a couple of time for us to enjoy. We had beef and chicken... the filling was nicely spiced and the pastry perfectly chewy and flaky. AND they are only $1 each! After reading the other reviews, I am planning on stopping by soon to try their flan and Cuban sammy! read more
