Casual order at the counter and they bring the food out to you type of restaurant. I thought my food was great. The ropa viaja was flavorful, portions were filling, tostones were crispy and based on this meal I would totally come back but my husband got the lechon Asado. It was very dry and lacked flavor. Okay Cuban Food in Pflugerville. Tropicana sets the standard for Cuban food in this town. I have not been to Havana on South Congress in years. Back in the day, Havana impressed as well. What about Chicho's? It won't thrill you. It won't kill you. * * * a) The menu at Chicho's is small. The menu at Tropicana is infinite. Chicho's is mostly a sandwich place. But they have some plates. Tropicana has everything. b) Servings at Chicho's are small. Small servings? At a Cuban restaurant? Yes - Miami has some Cuban restaurants with small servings too. But Cuban is where you often go when you are looking for some serious bellybusting. Havana Harry's is the model for ... your appetizer, your main course and your dessert are EACH as filling as a Thanksgiving Dinner. That is three Thanksgiving Dinners. The pork chop I got at Chicho's was cut thin. How thin was your pork chop, Samuel C? Funny you should ask, Yelp Reader. It was maybe a thickness of three on a delicatessen slicer. Probably closer to two. It was like eating a slice of ham out of an Oscar Mayer ham for little kids's lunch pack. It was nicely sauteed and had a sweet sauce. (Shades of the Oscar Mayer ham again). I ate my ration. There was an ice cream scoop's worth of congris. It was first rate congris ... the best thing on the plate. I was sad when my ice cream scoop's worth was gone. There were four maduros which counts as a legal but unimpressive serving. They were standard. There was a miniscoop of salad - but you know the salad you get as a side garnish in Mexican and Cuban restaurants. You don't eat it and it is no loss. * * * The other downside was the strawberry juice drink con leche. It was a standard industrialized strawberry pulp pack for drinks Which is par for the course when you order these things. Either something was funny with the strawberry pulp or something was wrong with the milk. 85 percent of the sips were okay. 15 percent were - wait a minute - something is wrong. The wrongness was inconsistent enough that I did not want to complain to management. But the more I reflect on it - the more I am sure I would not order another juice drink for a beverage. * * * Overall, my basic dishes were good enough that I could see eating there again if I happened to be in the neighborhood. But Pflugerville is full of amazing places ... And there is some great Yelp reviewing to be done in that town. And if I am hungering for Cuban ... there is always Tropicana. * * * Actually ... If I am hungering for Cuban ... There is always Miami. Eat at the best Cuban places in Miami And you will be so happy you will never want to eat again. Plus you will be so full it will be physically impossible for you to eat again. Ever. * * * No Cuban restaurant in Austin takes you to that extreme of happiness. But Tropicana does a good job of getting you 2/3 of the way there. read more

Since moving to Austin from Miami I've been missing Cuban food. I stumbled on this place and decided to try it out. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and croquetas. Place is very nice, clean good service. You order at the counter and they tell you which table to go to and bring your food shortly after. The Cuban sandwich was good. Only difference is that it didn't seem to be Cuban bread but delicious nonetheless. The croquetas were also delicious. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and just as delicious as some of the ones in Miami. I'm so glad I found this place! The music, customer service, ambiance, and the food! Omg the food is great! There are so many more things I want to try here. Pastelitos, flan, cubano! I want to try everything on the menu. This time, I came with coworkers, and we tried the cubano and ropa vieja with fries and with plantains, and I ordered tostones rellenos to try. As soon as I had the first bite, it just took me back in memory lane thinking of food I grew up eating. The flavors are right on the spot. The place is clean and well kept. When in this area, I always go to my beloved Curry Kitchen next door, but since I love Cuban food (and we never seem to have good options in Austin), I've always wanted to try out Chichos. We did that a few nights ago. We ordered a sampler platter, which comes with a little variety of options, as well as ropa vieja. We tried ordering cuban sandwiches and were informed they were out -- as well as their pizza. This was a setback, as I love a good cubano, and we were surprised they could be out of something so basic. Really torn between a 3 and a 4 star rating. Service and item availability nudge it down to a 3 on this particular visit. I will say the food was decent--probably slightly better than the bygone Cuban restaurants that have opened and closed in the Round Rock/Austin region in recent years, but probably not enough that I would return anytime soon. read more

Best Cuban food in this area for sure. I've been eating here for a year and love it every time. However, I'm sad to report that this establishment has done what many others do once they become popular; cut corners. The portions are getting smaller, to a point where I had to look at old photos to see if it was my imagination. Absolutely delicious and authentic Cuban food! We randomly stumbled upon this gem and were surprised it wasn't busier. We ordered the Beef Empanadas, Cuban Sandwiches, a Mamey Smoothie, and Sweet and Green Plantains which were all super yummy. The service was extremely nice and bilingual. I ordered a Cuban sandwich online. Checked the hours (11am-9pm) and ordered a cubano sandwich at 2:45 and paid online. Waited the 20 min prep time quoted on the app they use and headed over to get my sandwich on my very short lunch break. I pull on the door and it's locked. I go next door to the Cuban grocery and they kindly let me know the restaurant was closed. I check the door and It's clearly marked 11am-7pm. I get back in my car and call the restaurant. No answer. I leave a voicemail indicating what happened. About 45 minutes later I get a refund notice to my phone from them but no cal, no I'm sorry, no explanation. Maybe I'll try again one day and maybe I won't. I'm still not sure what their real hours are, after all. They get an extra star for the prompt refund. Minus 3 stars for wasting my whole lunch break and not calling me to explain or apologize. read more

The pastry had a nice, fluffy texture but I wasn't too crazy about the sugary guava flavoring. My Cuban sandwich was disappointing. My sandwich was really dry, bland, and the braised pork lacked flavor. The price for such an unimpressive sandwich seems excessive. The sandwich was absolutely not worth $12 - if it actually had a nice taste the price would have been justifiable. The Cuban double espresso had a really nice flavor. It was very rich, slightly bitter, and pretty sweet. I definitely recommend the double espresso. Seemingly family run business, with a cute diner like ambiance. We ordered a Cubano to go, and it came out pretty quick! Even to go, the bread was still crispy on the outside by the time we got home. The sandwich was packed with meats and was a really good portion for the price you pay! Cuban food located in Pflugerville? Say what? Let's get into the review. This spot is located on the other side of the Cinemark movie theater right next to another restaurant. Easy to find location. I popped in, went to the front, and ordered a Mixta Pizza, some croquetas, and a nice smoothie drink. The food was absolutely delightful, but I will only say that the pizza was a little too porky for me. However, I still enjoyed it. The croquetas were easily my favorite. I can eat these all day long and not get tired of them. Excellent job on these. The service was great and I can say I wouldn't mind coming again here for food.
