This is a review of CJ's food truck which is DEFINITELY still open! Our HOA brings a bunch of Todd trucks to our neighborhood. Some are hit or miss; some like Cryin' Johnnies are very good. Have had several of their hot dogs and flavor wise they do not suck. My go to has always been the Chicago dog. The don't use Vienna Beef dogs but Dietz and Watsons aren't bad. They also don't use poppy seed buns so the taste is a bit different. Tonight I ordered two (missed breakfast and lunch - sue me!). I had to order sport peppers (one of the defining flavors of a real Chicago dog) which was a surprise, the celery salt was missing, and the dogs themselves were cold. May have been the weather, may have been the ride home, but definitely cold. Good taste though (did I mention D&W?). I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because I've really enjoyed them in the past. May update - or even delete - this post the next time they come to our 'hood. One this is for sure: I will eat from the CJ folks in the future. read more

Results of a lunch here were mixed. While a traditional Chicago Dog and Lamb Gyro were good, and I met two men who told me they traveled thirty miles just to get their favorite hot dog here, I hated and barely ate a Cup of Crab Soup. I found a piece of shell in the broth, and the soup was largely composed of vegetables and small strands of crab. I tasted vegetables like kernels of corn more than I did crab. I also consumed a very good but largely congealed order of Bacon & Cheese Fries. Diane ate a large, elongated Corn Dog, which was fine. No air dryer or paper towels were in the men's restroom, and a cold-water faucet did not work. Also, a gnat flew around the dining room. read more

One of besties we're craving a hot dog. Being a fellow hot dog lover myself, why not? The four of us ordered various hot dogs (all great) with extras such as fries n gravy, onion rings, and the crab tater tots. I am not a tater tot person. But the crab oozing with cheese got my attention. I was undercover eye balling it. My bestie ordered it so technically she had to offer it first! Took one bite, and I couldn't believe tater tots could be elevated to a different level! Nice staff rounded out this first visit! read more

One of the best hotdogs i've found around here and the price is always right. Usually a friendly environment and always reminds me that i'm in a small town with a lot of history. It's nice to stop in and sit down, the servers are so friendly; or even just grabbing a quick bite to-go has been worth it. read more

Cryin' Johnnies Food Truck was parked outside of Liquidity Aleworks. We wanted snacks to go with our beer flights. They sold 15 kinds of hot dogs and 2 kinds of nachos. Everything was under $10. We had a Chicago Dog and a Sloppy Dog. They were ready shortly after the order was placed. The Chicago Dog reminded my date of home. Nice little place to get a dog and a beer. I had a chili dog and it was very tasty. My wife has a Chicago dog that was good but she missed the poppyseed bun. Onion rings were fried well. First time, didn't know what to expect. Pleasantly surprised. Crabby skins were great! I had a cheese burger and it was very good. My wife had a steak & cheese and it was good as well. I ordered a small fries with cheese on the side. AWESOME! If you like Thrashes fries in OC, then you'll love these! And the cheese reminds me of late night eats at Tubby's in OC, if anyone can remember. Deserving three and a half stars, this turned out to be a pretty good lunch stop. If you are on a budget, this is an excellent place to come for inexpensive tasty food at barebones prices. It's an easy on/off from I-70 over to Main Street and there is a convenient parking lot just before the restaurant. I started with a cup of their crab soup. It's obviously homemade. It's not cream based. And you can smell the crab. It's chock full of veggies and bits of shredded crab. A cup is only $3.99 and it's a perfect starter. Since most everyone was enjoying a hot dog or a burger, we decided that's what we'd order. They also have a daily special lunch menu for Tuesday- Friday that includes a drink and fries for $6.99. You can substitute onion rings for a couple dollars more. I just got the naked dog. And asked for it to be grilled. It's pretty basic -- just a dog in a bun. I added my onion mustard and ketchup. For under $3 this can't be beat. My husband got a foot long, grilled, Chicago dog. It was huge and topped with a bunch of stuff including the requisite neon green relish. Heartburn city for me, but heaven for him. The gals at the table behind us were oohing over their cheesy crab dip served with pretzel bread. They do have some healthier options -- salads etc. So if you're passing by, this might be the place to stop. Keep in mind that every thing is cooked to order so no fast food here.. read more

We moved to Mt. Airy about 8 months ago, and this little place has become a family favorite. We started with curbside because they were so prompt and made it easy. With warmer weather and things opening, we ate inside for the first time last week and loved the vibe inside. Great seating space and friendly staff! If you are craving some traditional American food such as burgers, fries and hot dogs this is a great local spot to order from. The fries are amazing! I was trying to eat on the healthier side so I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with mayo, grilled onions, pickle, lettuce and tomato. My sandwich was pretty good and I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. The kids meal however was a pizza on a flour tortilla. That pizza was the most disappointing thing I have ever seen in my life. It looked and tasted like something that you make at home when you are out of groceries and need to cook something up real quick. If you get a kids meal, I recommend to get anything except the pizza. Other than that the prices are fair and the other food was delicious! A family member purchased the gyro and it was delicious too. I do recommend this restaurant so you should give it a shot, especially if you do not live around the area and are driving into town! Cryin' Johnnies would crush it in a college town, particularly if you stay within the portion of the menu their name suggests is a core speciality. Imaginative toppings on hot dogs cooked to perfection and one of our party declared her Chesapeake (crab-topped) burger the best she ever had. Prices are more than reasonable for what you get. Service with a smile too, from wait-staff who seems to care. Kudos to managemet for hiring and training well. Holding back a star on somewhat slow kitchen on a rainy Saturday afternoon, on a chicken sandwich served both too hot and overcooked (holding back another star on this point alone) and on portions perhaps too big for lunch but too small for dinner (including fries or chips would address the latter). These all are correctable, and I look forward to visiting again and dropping five stars. For now, three. read more

The food was okay. Typical gyro, underseasoned old bay fries. Good burger. My main issue was the service. Took almost an hour to prepare an order we were told would take 35 minutes. Frizzy haired girl was rude and disrespectful after getting my order and payment mixed up. After I showed her the transaction on my card from my bank, she then had the nerve to ask to show her the date for further proof. It was clearly pending. She stormed off. There was no effort whatsoever to make it right, though I did hear a guy in the kitchen say to apologize. And the woman with the straight hair did exactly that, which I appreciate. But there was no offer for recompense for my time nor embarrassment (for claiming I hadn't paid). Just not good business, by my opinion. I do not think I will come back. I've always been a fan of this place for carry out but tonight we decided to eat in. My wife odered a beer from thier menu 5 times and every time was told they don't have it. Then we are told they only have one Polish sausage when we ordered two. Very disappointing! The food has always been good but tonight the out of stocks and staff missed the ball big time. read more

Good place to get American style food with an extra flair. They're known for their different hotdogs with various special toppings, as well as hamburgers. I tried the cheese stake sandwich and really enjoyed it. The prime rib meat was not chewy or stringy and they added a nice amount of melted cheese and mayo to make it juicy. The pack of fries is large enough to share with 3 people, especially since the hot dogs and sandwiches are filling by themselves. We ordered our meals to go and sat there as we waited for them to prepare our food. They were very friendly and made our meals pretty quickly, despite it being lunch hour and having customers dining in. read more

Food was tasty and prepared as requested- I have a picky eater husband and I'm always hesitant trying new places in the event that they add something he doesn't want. The absolute worst service, ordered 6 dogs only two were correct. Was told I didn't order what I ordered. I guess when there's no adults in the building it's to hell with customer service. I get it, good employees are extremely hard to find nowadays, but that's no excuse for flat out poor customer service. On top of everything, the hot dogs taste like they've been boiled, the buns are half stale, they split apart the moment you touch them and it's a bit pricey for simple boiled hot dogs. read more

This is a nice local place that specializes in hot dogs, and they definitely deliver on that. You want it (and it's a hot dog) you can get it, they serve hot dogs with crab meat, Mac and cheese, jalapeño peppers, and tons more. The burgers are great too as the place uses beef from a local source with great quality. As great as the food is though I docked them a point because the kitchen service is very slow. For a place that sells hot dogs and only has 8 tables (I think) and a small bar it can take almost 30 minutes to get your order. Moved to Mt. Airy April of 2019 and we are making our way through the local restaurants and last weekend was time for Cryin' Johnnies. We went on a Saturday and it was pretty packed with only a few open tables. We were seated and surprisingly had our orders taken right away. The woman (can't remember her name) was very sweet and answered my questions without making me feel rushed. She told me about the toasted coconut shake and I thought sounded good, so ordered it along with the chipotle black bean burger. I asked if they have any vegan/vegetarian hot dogs and she went in the back to check for me and came back smiling to tell me they did! So I ordered a vegetarian slaw dog. Everything was great! My son ordered the BLT and my daughter got a foot long; both with fries and enjoyed their meals as well. We plan to revisit soon. read more

I came for a dog. Today, I got a whole lot more. I ordered a classic Chicago dog. It was tasty. For a place you would come to enjoy a good dog, you need to check out some of the other items they offer. Let's talk about the vanilla milkshake I had today. Now, I'm not a milkshake kind of guy, per se. What peaked my curiosity was the milkshake would be prepared with vanilla ice cream and beer rather then milk. I'm not talking any ol' brew. It was the Sweet Baby Jesus, chocolate peanut butter porter, from the DuClaw Brewing Company of Baltimore. I asked the waitress about it. She said I should give it a go. What did I think of it? It was weird; it was funky; it was awesome! I was in shock. The beer itself was really good. Mixed into a shake? It was the best shake I've ever had. It's a grown up shake! Also offered, a raspberry wheat ale (can't remember the brewer). Maybe next time. I can tell you this, they should really expand on this theme. Sure the hot dogs are tasty. But this type of funky food fusion is what makes me want to write a review and tell others about a place. I would love to see other (local beer) combinations on their menu. Maybe beans and franks with some Cocoa Fuego chocolate chipotle stout? (also from the DuClaw Brewing Company). Go there. Do it. Tell a friend. read more

Good food here from our experience. Hot dogs are solid and fries are very good. Did not venture too far away from the core of what they make there. Main complaint would be that there seems to be an upcharge for every change or adjustment to any of the food items.
