This review is based on my experience of visiting this place a couple of times over a span of two years. Both times we only had drinks and appetizers. This place has a great ambiance for drinks and social gatherings. There is not many options like this on the waterfront by the docks, where one could get a drink while waiting for a boat. I think the ownership feels it's enough by charging Manhattan prices for underwhelming, watered down drinks and mediocre tasting food. We miss the Ropewalk! We really want to love CRU because of the location, but every time we give it another try, it disappoints. Over July 4th, we were on waitlist for lunch and actually their method of texting you to return to be seated was great. That, the view, and our excellent waitperson, Katie, are the only reason it rates 3 stars. There was barely any cod in the spicy cod sandwiches, same in the $36 lobster roll! The burger was good, if overpriced. I don't mind spending $$$ on a fine quality meal, but that's not CRU. Save yourself some aggravation and go to Brant Point Grill or Galley Beach. read more

Let's call a spade a spade, given how hard it is to get a reservation, naturally we expected a great experience. My one armed grandmother could have cooked a better piece of fish in the microwave. The starters were very tasty - oysters, lobster cocktail were sensational. The wine was top notch. The fish tasted like the rubber out of a Jenny Craig microwave meal. You go to dinner and expect service but in fact, I served myself - I filled up my glass of red wine 3 times and had hardly any water for half of the evening. I guess Cru you got me there - mandatory 20% service but actually, magic trick, you serve yourself, great revenue model though. We were on our honeymoon and were baffled to see it automatically added without any disclosure that it would be included. From my experience, it is 6+ people to a table where the tip will automatically be included and that is usually at 15%, not 2 people at 20%. Food was good. Had dinner here on a Wednesday night, and it was fabulous. The service and the food were both great. After seeing some of the negative reviews, I was a little skeptical, but I had heard from so many people that this was their favorite restaurant on island, so I couldn't skip it. You have to start with the raw bar - the oysters were all delicious and they have a good assortment. The real winner here was the shrimp though. They are MASSIVE. We started with two and ended up ordering more. The menu is a little limited, and I wouldn't normally order a lobster roll for dinner, but after hearing all of the reviews, I figured it was worth a shot. I'm so glad I got this because I think it's the best lobster roll I've had - so much lobster and so much flavor. If you're looking for a cocktail to start, go with the crucumber. Incredible location right at the marina at Straight Wharf. Sat on the outdoor patio for apps and drinks. Communal couches and tables (set up) made it fun chatting with other patrons and relax after a long day of walking around. Friendly attentive staff always smiling and available; looking sharp with matching outfits. I had the oysters (the freshest I've had in awhile); ice cold, not grainy and subtle after taste. Perfect. Also had the fried calamari. Not chewy, small portion and light on the batter. Rosé for drinks topped it off. Overall, highly recommend going when you're there for a day trip or a long weekend. Get there early right before cocktail hour starts as it fills up quick. We had no wait for patio seating on a Saturday around 4:30. I'll go back every time I'm there. Thanks Cru. read more

Delicious, CRU had a lot of hype after speaking with the locals in Nantucket. The food was incredible. Ambiance very upbeat and it's also great by the water. I came here with a group of 8 people for my 23rd birthday and we had to call ahead for reservations twice ($250 deposit). We could tell as soon as we walked up to the dock at Cru to see the sunset why this place was so popular. We had the local Pocomo Meadow oysters and they were probably the best ones in my life. During my vacation time, I like to call my self a lobster roll connoisseur. The lobster roll was out of the world. Bread toasted just right with the lobster tasting very buttered just how I like it! Saffron in a drink is also a very risky business. If I were to have one drink for the next year I'd make it the Danimal. Finally, I'm taking one star off these place because the service was very slow. We are a group of 8 people and we also seemed young. At least serve the bread warmer. read more

I purposely gave myself a week to write this review and let my feelings dissipate slightly for if I had written this review the day of our meal it would have been a solid 1 star. After reflecting, there are some major pros to this restaurant and thus I bumped my review up to 2 stars. Let's start with the pros: - It's really the only restaurant right on the harbor with great views of the boats so that's a huge plus. I know the location was always been a restaurant but I have never been to the Rope Walk so I can't compare. The decor is beautiful; huge white lacquered table in the middle of the bar, nautical vibe without being over the top, lots of gold accents, beautiful windows that open out to the harbor (although they latch precariously to the ceiling which makes me a little nervous for diners sitting at the tables along the wall). - the service really was great. Our waiter was Sebastian, I'm pretty sure (hard to hear...), and he was excellent. Despite barely being able to hear him (and him us) and having to dodge the packed bar, his happiness and attention to us never wavered. Our wine and water glasses were always filled promptly which is good sign of attentiveness. - the food was good. some of the food was stellar and some of the food was really just so-so. The two items that really stood out were: 1. the hushpuppies, shockingly... I am never a huge fan of hushpuppies but these, with the honey butter, were really delicious and I found myself wanting another bite. 2. the fried chicken sliders- by far, the highlight of our meal. These were maybe the best fried chicken slider I've ever had. now onto the cons which, in my opinion, outweigh the pros: - the bar area gets VERY loud, to the point where it really ruined our entire meal. This was probably the worst dining experience I've ever had because it was impossible for our party to hear each other. You literally had to cup your hand around your ear to hear the person next to you. We had a party of 9 people, which I understand is large, but it wasn't enjoyable for us at all, to not be able to talk to each other. We ended up having smaller conversations in groups of 2-3 people which gives the whole dinner a disjointed feeling. - the next con ties into the first... Why anyone would decide that seating a party of 9 people (originally booked for 10) at their long high-top in their BAR area is beyond me and insulting, especially when there are other more suitable tables in the main dining room. No reservation should be seated at the high-top in the bar... that should be reserved for bar dining because it's just awkward and uncomfortable, especially when you have another party of 4 seated at the other end. Also, there should never be a party larger than 4 people seated in the bar area due to how difficult it is to talk to one another! My other, albeit nit-picky, qualm is their godforsaken bar stools... they have to be the MOST horribly designed bar stools on the planet. They are 1. gigantic, 2. HEAVY to the point that I couldn't even pull the chair out from under the table without two hands, 3. uncomfortable although they have a back which is nice. These things were difficult to maneuver when the bar was only half full and it got worse as it got increasingly crowded. Overall, I was probably the most uncomfortable I've ever been in a restaurant here... which didn't get better as bar-goers began leaning against the back of my chair as the night went on. - the prices... Nantucket is an expensive island. I've been vacationing here my entire life and I live in Philadelphia which isn't cheap either so I am not unaccustomed. However, Cru raises the bar, even for Nantucket (maybe that's what they're going for??). $20 for two sliders. $25 for crudo smaller than the size of your fist. And my favorite, the famous lobster roll for $38... Don't get me wrong, most of the prices are fair if you're getting really, really amazing food but I just found many items lacked that extra something that makes paying extra worth it which ties into my next con... - the food... Most of our food was so lackluster that for the price we paid it was comical. Their lobster roll is supposed to be the best on the island and although the roll was buttery and the meat was piled high, most of my lobster meat was chewy and tough. I had a better experience at Jettie's sandbar, of all places, for $10 less. I could go on but yelp is stopping me from writing more... so, to sum it up, I'm not scared to drop a pretty penny on dinner but I expect my pretty penny to pay for not only outstanding food but also an outstanding experience which Cru definitely did not deliver. read more

I have been to Cru many times in the past and had good experiences, and figured we would fly in for afternoon/evening for dinner with another couple. First we had reservations for a party of 4 on Saturday which were confirmed via their reservation email; upon arrival we were told that our reservations are for Sunday... I said that is not possible, luckily I had my email saved on my phone which showed the confirmation. The hostess apologized for the misunderstanding but still gave some what of an attitude and made it feel as if we were an inconvenience to her. The oysters were good, the shrimp cocktail was good sized and tasty. The lobster bisque had good taste, mine had maybe a dime size chunk of lobster and that's being generous. The salads were good. But felt warm to the taste (because of the heat in the restaurant.) I had the lobster roll, the roll it self looked like it was mistakenly ripped in half yet still toasted and served. The taste was good, not much lobster. Highly over priced. Two of the other guests had the chicken under a brick entree, they said it was ok but wasn't much chicken and tasted just ok. And lastly the fish entree was ordered, possibly the flounder I'm not sure. It was decent size and taste was ok. Saturday's heat was off the charts; with heat index close to 100 degrees with high humidity and no breeze. The temperature in the restaurant was well over 100 degrees, the windows were open with a few fans running, none near our table. No A/C running . I understand that the restaurant is on the water and typically patrons would want the windows open and enjoy the ocean air, however; it was unbearable. It made the hot food not enjoyable at all, we couldn't even finish our entrees. The ice in the water lasted seconds before it was melted and the water was room temperature. I have to say for the price of the restaurant, I was highly disappointed with the service, the food and the overall experience of our visit. We were only on island for dinner... Next time, we will be dinning somewhere else. read more

My wife had reserved a table for us for our 10th anniversary tonight and we were looking forward to the coquillage. Fifty yards away we could hear the pounding music, which only got louder as we approached. Thinking it was just playing outside we went in, where it was, if anything, worse. The staff just blithely looked at us when we said it seemed too loud. They showed us a couple tables but it was impossible: we couldn't hear each other. We are not anti-music; we listen to it all day, and I play several instruments. But this was torture (and really rotten music, too). So be warned: if you want to have a nice, quiet dinner as a couple, go anywhere but here. There are people who seem to like this torture, so leave the place to them. Then head over to the Straight Wharf, where we had a lovely dinner listening to relatively soft jazz. read more

Probably the most popular restaurant on Nantucket, Cru is a place to go if you want to see or be seeing. While getting a last minute reservation outside is nothing shy of a miracle from God, the restaurant's staff do strive to accommodate. The food is decent and yes they do serve a good Lobster Roll...btw, I'm so over this fad. The rest of the menu is typical of what you can expect at the "it" brunch spot and the pricing is equally comparable. My recommendation is plan ahead and try to go after 2PM on a busy summer weekend. If all fails, introduce your friend Ben to the maitre d. And do yourself a favor, please leave your pastel pink/green shorts at home: it's Nantucket's version of Ed Hardy. read more

Great View, Great Drinks, ask for the Back Bar. Don't just go into Cru to have a drink or just eat, go for the amazing view and ocean breeze sweeping through the establishment. Never have a drink at the bar when you walk in, go to the back bar which is right on the marina but is a bit hidden unless you ask for it. The servers are awesome, navy blue, white and shiny gold shoes. They keep it classy and preppy. This is my favorite drink location. If you want a way more casual location hit up Slip 14. This is a completely biased review. I am on Nantucket Island. First time here, and it is 75 degrees, sunny with a mild breeze. Absolutely gorgeous out. I already have one beer in me. I went shopping, and scored some cute Lilly Pulitzer dresses on sale. I thought I would need a larger size than what I ended up buying. Life is good. So when we ended the day at the cute, fun and Phillippe Starck-like outdoor area of CRU, I am in a good mood. My friends and I tucked the dog under a seat while we sat along the walkway in order to somewhat abide by the restaurant rules. The staff at the restaurant and the other patrons were very understanding when the puppy got a little clingy and inched closer to us. The drinks were ok, not super great, but I get the impression that people come here to sit in the gorgeous space, and not necessarily for the food and drink. And gorgeous it is, with chandeliers, and walls accented in cheerful yellow. Having friendly staff doesn't hurt either. And being within running distance to the ferry is the icing on the cake. read more

Well, CRU has taken up residence in Rope Walk's location and we weren't disappointed, My soft shell crab BLT was fantastic and my wife's cheeseburger was bigger than her head. Size doesn't matter but the taste of her burger was unbelievably delicious. My martini was mixed as good or better than many a Boston restaurant and portion size (size does matter here) was great. Just a flawless meal. A superb selection of oysters (raw and fried), a burrada that was perfectly cheesy and creamy, and a lobster roll that didn't skimp on the lobster. This review is long overdue, since we ate here in June, but better late than never... Let's start with what Cru is not: inexpensive. My boyfriend and I have birthdays that are one day apart and an annual traditional of, in lieu of exchanging gifts, spending a long weekend on Nantucket and treating each other to dinners with utter disregard for menu prices. Our meal at Cru was worth every dime of the $300+ check. We made reservations online mid-week before our trip and the earliest we could get was 10:15pm. However, we were happily surprised when we got a call from the hostess, while sitting on the beach the afternoon of our reservation, offering us a 9:00 table instead! We sat at a table overlooking the marina (the restaurant is at the end of Straight Wharf) on a gorgeous warm, but breezy, June night. It was perfect. The service was pretty great. When our cute college-girl sommelier approached the table, I'll admit I didn't have high expectations, but she expertly and non-judgmentally recommended a delicious bottle of white wine well within our moderate (for Nantucket) price range. The waitress was attentive and knowledgeable. The food....so, so good. It was our first night on island and I didn't want to over-indulge, so I ordered oysters and a salad to start, and a few firsts (still $20 each) for my meal. The crudo and chilled seafood was superb. My boyfriend, who actually isn't a huge seafood fan, ordered the swordfish and said it was one of the best things he had ever tasted. I wanted to love this place but the wait was 2+ hrs (no reservation, checked in with hostess @715 didn't get seated until 930) . So we sat at the bar 3 rounds of cocktails. The bar tender seemed annoyed 3 of us paid because she each bought a round and didn't keep the tab open. The blueberry soda cocktails were watery. We ordered nine Cocktails, oysters, fries and water. We spent at least $100, so she made tips, I didn't like her attitude. Once seated the service was ok , the waitress hyped up the special which two of us ordered then to find out it was all out(highly likely @930!) then the apps show up 25 minutes later entrees almost an hour later. Apparently the kitchen was backed up we got a free amuse Bouche but we were starving because it was 10:30 before we ate. And just slow service all around which was surprising since it was so late. The menu is limited and the bar scene minus one blonde tude bartender was ok.. I wouldn't recommend for dinner. But location was great..I may try again but would rather go to straight wharf. read more

Food was outrageously expensive servers were arrogant all they wanted was to get rid of this as soon as they could they served us drinks we paid the bill then they asked us to leave will never go back and I would highly recommend anybody reading this please take the advice. My friends and I couldn't make our bachelorette's weekend in Nantucket, so we thought we'd send her several surprises, one of which would be a round of shots after her planned dinner at Cru Restaurant. One would think this was a fairly straightforward task, but I was appalled by their lack of attention prior to planning, and then the fact that they never delivered the shots, even after taking my credit card info. We were notified by our friend that after her bachelorette dinner on a Saturday night, she did not receive the round of tequila shots that we were very excited to give her. I am more than incredibly disappointed with Cru's lack of communication and ultimate execution on this point. Although this was an extremely easy and straightforward task, for some reason I had to call over ten times, speak with over three people, and send a confirmation email (even after I had asked Cru twice to proactively send one to me, which they never did). Despite my best efforts to coordinate from our end, this somehow managed to fall by the wayside. I am now incredibly uncomfortable having my credit card number floating around on a piece of paper in which I imagine is an extremely disorganized office. My experience with Cru was absolutely abysmal. I also sent an email after the fact to Cru to ask why the shots were never delivered, and to please destroy my credit card info, and never received a response. How typical. read more

Everything we got to eat was amazing and was fully eaten...and there was enough of us where we tried pretty much everything... I also got the CRUcumber, which was delicious if you like cucumber. Didn't taste too much like vodka but was strong. Service was a bit confusing...don't tell the bread boy you want a drink...because he just gets the manager who comes over and then gets your server.
