Thanks to a friend of mine with connections, I finally got reservations to eat at Cru this past weekend. The atmosphere is wonderful and we enjoyed sitting out on the patio on a very warm night and people watching. Our waiter, a wine specialist (not the house sommelier as she was out, I believe) and the manager all visited our table and provided top-notch service.
I thought it was "ok" only because the menu is pretty limited and the prices are insane. Par for the course on island, sure...but when I pay that much money for food, I want to be blown away. I left content and full...but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. It's a very trendy locale, but I think there are other spots on the island that blow my skirt up a bit more, if ya know what I mean.
Raw Bar
- The oysters were motherf'cking delicious. There is nothing else I can say. 5 Stars.
Appetizers
- Smoked Fish Dip. 4 Stars. It was yummy. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there were more veggies for the dipping. The fish dip on the cucumber, YUM.
- Crispy Calamari. 4 Stars. This was actually a very yummy calamari and I didn't even intend to try it. Once I did, I was impressed.
- Blue Crab Cocktail. 2 Stars. While the crab was delicious, it's served in a cocktail glass, layered like parfait. It wasn't a presentation I enjoyed and it made it difficult to share. For $26...we felt a little put off.
Mains
- Haddock Schnitzel. 3 Stars. Oh yes. I did say Haddock Schnitzel. You should have heard us asking the waiter questions. "So um, how do you Schnitzel a fish? Like, you didn't pound it out did you?" He explained that they use a large filet of the fish (which they did, it was like the size of a dinner plate). So basically...it was breaded fish. It was tasty, but not as novel as the name suggest. Plus, the portion size is huge, so I'd recommend sharing.
- Grilled Wester-Ross Salmon. 3 Stars. (First, as an aside...did anyone else read that as Westeros and have a GoT moment? Me too.) The salmon was cooked perfectly, but the star of the plate were the beets. They were cooked to perfection and the yogurt vinaigrette on the plate was stunning. It was a well-rounded dish and the flavors were lovely, but again, just not incredibly interesting.
Wine
- We got the only Albarino on the menu. I can't remember the name, but it was a lovely bottle of wine that I would recommend pairing with the seafood. Tasty.
All in all, it was a lovely experience and a 3-star review to me is not a bad thing. It was a perfectly lovely evening, but not the best I've had on island. You can't go wrong at the raw bar and the seafood is distinctly fresh. read more
