Great service and pretty good food, including a great kids menu! We did the 3 course tasting. The scallop to start topped with caviar in a corn sauce was INCREDIBLE. The lobster entree was a little overcooked and the chocolate cake dessert was a little disappointing but overall, not bad. The kids menu had more choices than usual and the kids we brought loved the handmade pasta with marinara as well as the ice cream. We took the ferry over from White Elephant where we were staying, which can be booked with the hotel front desk or by calling the restaurant. You can order drinks on the ferry (they don't allow kids). They looked fully booked on resy but when we called, they had plenty of availability and were able to get a same day reservation for a party of 6. They also have a shuttle which takes 25 min that takes you back to white elephant every hour on the half hour (and the ferry which takes 50 min every hour on the hour). If you have time (read more than a week), definitely check this spot out if you're looking to get away from the crowds. It's truly unique. Topper's is the restaurant part of the Wauwinet Hotel, headed out to Great Point, you are so far away from it all. To be 30 miles out to sea, and on part of the island so removed from downtown, what an incredible thing. It's approachable, because anyone can dine there, yet feels so exclusive. I was probably dining next to a billionaire and had no clue. You can drive from town about 20 minutes or take the 45 minute or so boat from Children's Beach/White Elephant ($30 round trip). We did the boat ride, and when doing so, they do make you do the 3 course tasting meal (at least for dinner). But that boat ride is so great: being on the ocean, seeing the incredible houses on the cliffs, and drinks available to purchase, to boot! And that, my friends, is where we come to the disappointing part of the experience. The three course meal was expensive solely because it was underwhelming. Price wise, $100+ per person, which pricewise doesn't sound terrible, but the food and portions were so underwhelming. Also just the flow was off. It lasted less than an hour, but the boat home was scheduled to leave 2 hours after arrival. So, you could enjoy the grounds and views, but we ended up going for a walk down the dirt road and meandering around the small hotel lobby, but it was kind of just a weird experience. The food: I ended up getting most of the dishes that had an extra cost, which made the serving size and price ratio even more dismal. The food was average, at best, and again tiny portions. So unmemorable, I can't even remember what we had. Lobster? To note: I did see people not eating the 3 course meal, and the burger and lobster roll I spied looked solid. I walked around the hotel grounds and it's definitely a super interesting getaway, so far from everything. The bar area/room is tiny but Nantucket charming. It's hard not to talk to the person sitting next to you since it's so intimate, which I love, since meeting new people is a beautiful thing. Overall, a dreamy, relaxing and unique location. I'm happy to have tried the boat and the whole excursion, but next time (in about 5 years or so) would schlep up in a car (do they have a shuttle?) and enjoy a la carte. read more

Ate here a few wks ago to celebrate my 27th wedding anniversary. Had high hopes but it just wasn't great. People rave about the view and the setting. If you've spent any time around the Atlantic Ocean at all, you'll no doubt agree the view is just mid. It's an expanse of beach grass with a distant view of a flat calm bay. Not an uncommon site around New England, at all. The partial wedding set up on the back lawn that was just left there on a Friday night didn't help. It gave the place an overall vibe of a catering hall after the party ended - not an upscale restaurant. The hotel spaces were disappointing too. A fake wood floor in your hotel lobby - on Nantucket? A lobby with no books in the bookshelves and bad lighting? Cmon. The food was unfortunately forgettable too. The service was the one bright spot. Our servers were very attentive and professional. The oysters were allegedly caught in the waters outside the hotel (which I believed, because they were very small). But still good nonetheless. The halibut and the burger were great. Came here for lunch as I wanted to see what Toppers was all about since its touted as one of the best restaurants on the island. It's a trek (~20 minutes?) from main part of the island if you're not taking a boat from the White Elephant. As expected, the prices are high. My sandwich was $35, didn't come with fries, and my glass of wine was $25. Sat out on the deck, which was still enclosed since its not quite summer yet. If you were expecting to have waterfront views, you won't get any from their deck or patio as the restaurant is tucked away on the side and the waterfront is reserved for hotel guests ability to sunbathe on a little crest that is elevated higher than the restaurant. Disappointing. Read about service complaints, but my server was on point. Extremely timely on everything, but the patio only had about 4 tables. The meal started with some "free" bread. One was a cheese bread and the other a sweeter bread with raisins. The provided butter was great on the raisin bread. Well churned and soft. I ended up trying the most interesting thing on the menu, the Halibut Katsu sandwich. It is supposedly new for 2024. It came with egg salad, slaw and a jalapeno-yuzu tartar sauce. TBH, it was rather flavorless. I liked the mouthful and texture of the halibut. Expert crisp. That was done well, but the combination either needed more yuzu sauce. Perhaps try recreating some sort of tonkatu sauce to go with it instead. I ended up dressing it up with some fry sauce. Disappointing for the price. It came with a little mini salad. The fries were expertly cooked, so no complaints with those and the server did a fine job suggesting the wine to go with the halibut. Always an amazing experience. There is a boat 'shuttle' that if you can make a reservation for, takes you from the White Elephant in town out to the Wauwinet. This is an absolutely amazing experience. Lunch and a boat ride across the sound? Absolutely yes. We had reservations for the boat ride, but unfortunately the weather was not cooperating so we let Toppers know we would just be driving out. The attentive hostesses and patient waiter were so fabulous during our lunch. Halfway through there was a bit of a sprinkle so the hostess immediately came over to offer us a seat inside. We declined since the rain didn't feel like it would last and the umbrellas were shielding us nicely. I wish I had gotten more pictures of the food, because while it is not cheap, it is absolutely worth it. The tarte flambé was the perfect combo of cheese and flavor. The lobster roll was stuffed full of lobster and enough for two meals. Very much of note: Toppers had a good selection of zero proof alcohols so they can make any of their cocktails non-alcoholic which was amazing. Definitely put this on your hot spot for your next Nantucket visit. read more

We were staying at the Wauwinet and wanted dessert after dinner elsewhere. We came a little on the late side but were seated outside under a heat lamp. We ordered the billionaire's bar and the baklava cheesecake. I'm all for pastry chefs having creative license to make unique desserts, but the menu needs to accurate describe those unique desserts. The billionaire's bar was described as a shortbread layer with chocolate and caramel layers, but it was not that AT ALL. There was 0 chocolate, 0 shortbread, and the only caramel was on the ice cream. The dessert was bar-shaped, but it was coated in a clear shell and the bottom tasted almost like white chocolate, so not at all what we expected. The ice cream was rich and tasty but didn't really taste good with the "bar." The baklava cheesecake was very well executed and well made, but the flavors didn't really go together. The baklava is a little too crunchy and the orange-rose syrup was a little too sweet with the tangy cheesecake for my taste. I also found that it was expensive for just dessert, especially ones that were not great. read more

This place is so cute. It's located in this very cute inn/hotel. A very lively crowd a lot seemed to be happening. More than the food, this place has the most stunning views and incredible view of the sunset. If anything, come here for a drink, and watch the sunset. We did end up staying for dinner also. We got oysters and the special which was a lobster pasta. Both were very good and extremely fresh. I polished off the lobster pasta, it was rich but you could tell all the seafood was really local and super fresh. It's quite the experience, so if you're around this part of Nantucket, I would recommend going to least see the views. read more

We had excellent service and it was a busy night. I spoke with the wine steward and found an excellent 2010 white Bordeaux that was a great value. We had the lobster and crab cakes along with some oysters which were great. I had a lobster and crab pasta that was excellent. Unlike other reviewers, we really enjoyed the baklava cheesecake. Ours was balance and just enough baklava on top without being overly sweet. Had a Weller 12 as a nightcap. We thought the dinner was on par with many restaurants we go to in NYC with similar prices. Cell reception is not great so it took us a minute to find out Uber back into town. We will be back on our next trip. read more

About 7 small pieces of cooked carrots arranged on a plate with drops of some type of cream and watercress sprinkled on top. One scallop as an app. I do have to say that the filet was outstanding- perfectly cooked, delicious broccolini, however the potato (almost like a block of hash fries) was a bit greasy. We enjoyed a 4 day stay at The Wauwinet so we had several meals at Topper's which is located in the boutique hotel. The views, decor, ambiance, and service were all 5 stars! We had breakfast all 4 mornings, room service for dinner once, and dinner on the deck once. All of the breakfast options were very delicious! We enjoyed the Lobster Benedict that was on as a special, the 2 egg breakfast, breakfast sandwich, and cinnamon roll French toast. Their coffee is some of the best we have had while traveling! The deck dinner was also very good as we had the Tart Flambee, Yellowfin Tuna, Lobster Roll, and the grilled Halibut special. The gruyere tart was our favorite. The crust was flaky yet crisp with caramelized onions, mushrooms, and bacon. All were very tasty, with great technique and seasoning. The room service we ordered was the Lobster pasta, lobster crab cakes, and old bay fries. The crab cakes and fries were very good but the pasta was under seasoned and dry-needed more sauce. I was highly impressed with the quickness of our meals being prepared in the dining room and room service was very prompt. All of the staff were so lovely and you feel promptly taken care of without them being overly intrusive. There is plenty of parking. There is also a boat shuttle service. Reservations recommended. They are seasonal so check to verify their opening and closing dates. Even if you aren't a guest of the hotel you should definitely go for a meal and highly recommend you enjoy the ocean front lawn at sunset! read more

Truly awful. After looking at glowing reviews I made the trip to the other side of the island for dinner. The property itself is rather subdued compared to the online market photos. It's just a collection of small buildings on the bay. No old world ambiance to speak of. An aging property resting on its laurels. The service was awful. Asked repeatedly for water, utensils and bread. Finally spoke to a manager who blamed the lack of attention on large parties. The appetizers we uneditable. The bread smelled too strongly of sour onions. After an hour and a half with no sign of our entrees coming out we left. I've never done that. But also have never been ignored by a restaurant. read more

Tonight we got the burger and fries cut up for six, lobster cakes, oysters and beet salad. They all were so delicious! Burger is a must try. Topper's was recommended by our hotel concierge and I saw it was a highly rated restaurant on Nantucket so we wanted to try it. I later found out the the White Elephant owns this hotel also, so perhaps that's why the restaurant was recommended to us. We went for dinner and the restaurant was very nice, we enjoyed the warm fire in the fireplace. The ambience is very nice and a great place for special occasions. We enjoyed going out and seeing the sun set before our dinner. For appetizers we had the oysters that are farm raised right in front of the hotel and they were excellent. My wife enjoyed the the squash soup and rated it very highly. We also enjoyed the bread, especially the rich brown bread and very creamy butter. For our entrees we had the burger and the salmon, the burger was very good and the salmon....well it was a little disappointing for this caliber restaurant. It was a bit "fishy" tasting and not up to a 5 star standard. Based off of this one experience, I would not recommend the salmon but it may have been a one off problem. Since it was our anniversary they brought us a nice plate with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate and 2 brownie bites which was a nice touch, but if I'm totally honest the brownie bites tasted like a factory made product. The service was very good and the staff very friendly. Overall, I probably would not go again, not because it wasn't good, it just didn't seem like a "wow" experience that I would have expected for the 5 star rating and the price. read more

We were biking so we were a tad sweaty, but nobody seemed to mind, and the service was great. There's an outstanding wine list. It's all overpriced. But, you're paying for the experience. We sat outside at a table with an incredible view of the water. The breeze was delicious, and so was the food. I had oysters for brunch (when in Nantucket!), and then pate. Yes, great quality food and ambiance, we have been to Toppers many times over the years (including a stay at Wauwinet for our honeymoon 10 years ago), but l agree with others who recently report negative experiences (so unlike our experience in past years). When I tried to politely bring a few issues with the service to David the manager's attention he was very gruff / abrupt with me. He tried to turn it all around saying it was our fault / not his fault. I merely said I was providing constructive criticism / feedback so he would be aware of the issues. But unfortunately we parted company with an "agree to disagree" outcome and we won't be returning any time soon. It's so sad, even out cab driver (with Val's Taxi) told us he has heard many complaints this year -- without me even raising the topic. He mentioned in passing. read more

Toppers is getting a little too "big for their britches." My husband and I have been going to Toppers each year since they opened. I've taken multiple friends and family there when they visit us on island. Tonight we arrived for a 6pm reservation that we made months ago. They had trouble initially finding the reservation and asked that we step to the side while they seated other parties. Fair enough. When we arrived there we two other couples seated outside, under the canopy. When we originally were seated we asked to move to an interior two topper table (as the sun was so strong I could barely see. I know, first world problems.) The young hostess demurred from placing us at an interior table (even though multiple tables were open) and offered a two seater next to the portable bar. WTH? We opted to sit in the sun spot seat, while watching the remainder of the interior tables remain empty throughout our entire two hour dinner. Upon arriving home we noticed we hadn't been charged for two cocktails. My husband called Toppers and asked them to add the two cocktails to our card. They then had the audacity to ask him if he wanted to "add a gratuity? The exterior tent NEVER filled to 50% full the entire two hours we were there. What is the rationale for 1) move to the side as we seat other patrons while we check your reservation (even though we have multiple open tables 2) why the insistence we sit in the 10,000 Suns seat? My husband began referring to us as Jack and Rose amongst the Astors. Lol Waitstaff was outstanding, cocktails and food was delicious, as usual. Reception and hostess staff needs to be trained in the finer points of making all their guests feel welcome. read more

5 stars for brunch, 3 for dinner, hence the 4-star review. I love coming by boat for brunch, since the Wauwinet is a bit off of the beaten path. Located in one of the island's top hotels, Topper's is upscale and delicious. You can eat brunch in a bathing suit and coverup, but dinner attire is more formal and most men are in sports jackets (they may even be required). The brunch drinks are all very good. I love the Bellini (light on the juice please), and their sangria-based take on frosé, which seems to be the trend of the summer, is refreshing and delicious. Oysters, cheese, and pâté starters are the way to go. For brunch, you can't go wrong with the Topper's Benedict or the fried chicken sandwich. The Old Bay-seasoned fries are SO good. I can't recall what I ordered for dinner last time, but it was quite good. Lobster is delicious. The lamb came out practically raw on one occasion, however, and we had to send it back. The dining room is nice for dinner, and the outside patio area is perfect for brunch/lunch, or dinner when it's warm enough. Service can be hit-or-miss, depending on where you're seated and how busy they are. Overall, I highly recommend as one of the best (if not the best) brunches on Nantucket. read more

My favorite meal on the island! Hubby and I were guests of a dinner party here. We first enjoyed passed hors d'oeuvres on their outdoor deck overlooking the ocean. A caviar bar, glasses of Cristal, and raw oysters with whipped champagne on top made for a decadent hour. Once seated inside the beautiful restaurant we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 course meal, especially the excellent wine it was paired with, Clos de l'Oratoire Grand Cru Classe 2010. Our party finished the meal drinking the most incredible dessert wine: chateau d'yquem - sauternes 2003. (Is this what ambrosia tastes like??) Upon arrival I really felt I was in parts unknown (of Nantucket) and loved every minute of it. My friend and I sat on the patio and our server Larry was fantastic from start to finish. We began with foie gras and a seafood risotto which was out of this world (as was the bread service which kicked off the night) the duck and lobster were spectacular and the dessert was the proverbial icing on the cake. Amazing everything. We were a party of 4 adults, 4 kids + an infant. Not once did the staff (and even patrons) bat a judgmental eye. We were super frazzled with the kids but no one else was despite sitting in the more formal indoors dining (versus outside which we thought we were getting). The food is worth every penny- sometimes you walk out of a restaurant spending hundreds with mediocre food but Toppers is not one of them. I had the lamb, our friends had the seafood pasta (called something more elegant on the menu) as well as the bass. Everything was top notch delicious (again not exaggerating- I'm a true foodie after all). The sommelier and waitress were just bonuses to an otherwise children-infused stressful outing. GENERAL MANAGER NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO RUN A HOTEL: we recently visited the Wauwinet, and are absolutely appalled by the lack of service and attention to detail. The entire staff we interfaced with was lovely, but they were completely overwhelmed and understaffed. 1) we called ahead to ask if we could grab a drink prior to dinner but tie to our dinner reservation because we heard about governor baker's law, and the person on the phone said it was ok. Not the case when we got here early. 2) we stood by one of the Chez lounge chairs waiting for the chairs to be cleaned and one server said it would take time because there was one server for the whole area, at sunset, and it never got serviced. 3) we arrived at the hostess table for our reservation and when brought to our table, it had not been cleaned (in covid times!!) and the hostess quickly sprayed it for us and wiped it down. We then waited about 15 minutes for our server to arrive with menus and place settings. Super sweet server but clearly running the show single handily. It's clear that the hotel and restaurant is lacking the management and leadership needed to effectively run a luxury property. Will not be back and will absolutely not recommend to anyone else. Please treat your staff better by providing training and enough support to handle a busy summer night. read more

Preface: I love wine. Topper's at the Wauwinet is one of my favorite wine restaurants in America. Located about a 20 minute drive from downtown Nantucket, Topper's is a special occasion type place on the island. Good: the wine list is a tome. I drank a 2001 Gramona Cava overlooking the bay from oversized Adirondack chairs while the sun set. That sort of place. The wine list is deep and has some value, too. The head sommelier was beyond helpful in finding us some of these gems (2006 Cayuse Cailloux made me realize that being on their waitlist now for 8 years in a row is worth it). Average: service was a bit spottier than I'd expect from this sort of place (white table cloth, French/New American/fancy). It's a bit stuffy in overall atmosphere, actually. Most of the food is usually more in the average camp, which is a bit surprising. Bad: Some of the food has misfired on various visits. Poor execution on fish, some off flavor combinations, sometimes too-heavy handed with salt. When you're paying $$$$ for food, these things get magnified. Note: It's not in town, so you gotta fork over another $40-60+ on taxi/ubers to get there and back. Overall, it's a must-visit if you love wine and/or idyllic locations on the water (with wine). read more
