Located in the questionable Hawaiian Monarch Hotel on Niu Street (off of Kalakaua), towards the beginning of Waikiki. Parking is inside the hotel, and the parking entrance is a little confusing to get to, but it's on the right side of Niu. It's a very bizarre parking entrance, as you have to drive in a bit to get to the ramp to get up to the parking stalls. They don't even have an automated ticket machine to get a parking ticket, there's a guy that stands there and gives you your ticket. Except the problem is, other people that drove separately than me said the guy wasn't even there when they drove in and they had to wait for him to come out. Bizarre. Also, sorry, parking is NOT free. You pay at Cream Pot, $2 for each hour. Don't lose your parking ticket, cause if you do it'll be a whopping $72.
I went here for a small bridal shower, about 11 or 12 people. It was pre-planned, so they reserved the outside area for us. The tables outside are decent, but I kind of wish we were seated inside in the cold a/c (they had a long table inside that could've seated us). If you sit outside, you deal with the weather, rain, and the noise of traffic. I would best describe the decor as "hobbit country chic". Hobbit sized doors.
Anyhow, I thought it was a pretty good deal that we each paid only $25 each to choose from a pre-set menu. The pre-set menu for our party was as below:
Entrees (choose 1):
- Fresh Strawberry Souflee' Pancakes (Topped w/homemade vanilla custard & strawberry coulis.)
- Banana Souflee' Pancakes (Topped w/homemade vanilla custard & dark salted caramel sauce.)
- The Classic French Rolled Omelet (Baked maple-cured bacon, saute'ed mushrooms, caramelized onions, potato, & gruyere. Includes seasoned rice & mixed green salad.)
- Three Cheese French Rolled Omelet (Pecorino, monterey jack, parmesan, cherry tomatoes, & basil. Includes seasoned rice & mixed green salad.)
Sides (choose 1):
- Baked Maple-Cured Bacon
- Lacy Hash Brown (Includes sour cream & scallions)
Beverages:
- Fresh Squeezed Strawberry Lemonade
- Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
- Kona Coffee
I think it was a great deal, and it made it easier since we all pre-paid the party's host, and she paid the restaurant in advance. That was convenient, so we wouldn't have to all split checks. Plus, tip was included in the $25. The only reason I didn't like this, is because I wanted to try so many things. I'll have to come back to try everything else on the menu..
For the entree I had the classic French rolled omelet. Probably one of the best omelets I've ever had. All of the ingredients perfectly complemented each other. Although I like salad, I thought it didn't really fit with the rest of the plate. I had almost ordered the fresh strawberry souffle pancakes, but I wasn't sure that I wanted to eat something so sweet as my entire entree. Thankfully, my friend let me try a bite of hers and it was delicious. The pancakes were so light and airy. I wouldn't even really call them anything near traditional pancakes, you just have to try them. If I come back, I'm probably ordering both the omelet AND the souffle pancakes for myself.
I was really torn between the baked maple-cured bacon and the lacy hash brown, but I ended up choosing the bacon--and I'm glad I did. The lacy hash brown were kind of small, but looked delicious when they came out, nice and crispy... But their baked maple-cured bacon is just about the best bacon I've ever had. I love my bacon really crispy, and they served it crispy enough for my liking. The maple flavoring was really present, and it tasted like they added the maple flavoring themselves (vs. just pre-made maple bacon that you can get at the grocery store). It was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Definitely try it!
For my beverage, I had the strawberry lemonade. Really fresh and flavorful, but it came in a tiny thin glass. I asked the waitress if it was refillable, and her response was, "I don't know," then she shrugged and walked off. Seriously? I would've rather had a "Sorry, no it's not." Or, "I'm not sure, let me go find out for you." Her response was just so "whatever". Maybe it's because our tip is already pre-paid for in our total, but her "whatever" attitude really peeved me.
I'd give the food a solid 5 stars, but the service was more like a 3 for the incident above. In addition, I asked for a ketchup bottle, and they brought back 1 bottle for our three tables. The 1 bottle they brought was almost empty! How are we going to split an almost empty bottle of ketchup amongst 3 tables, especially with breakfast type foods where everyone wants ketchup? Hmmm. We asked for more ketchup, and it took a really long time to get another bottle. That, and only one of our tables had utensils.
Overall, I'd definitely come back again, just not as a party so that I can order whatever I want and maybe get better service. read more
