However, a big part of selecting a contractor is meeting for an estimate, reviewing said estimate and understanding the organization and professionalism you're dealing with. That's what this is reviewing. I contacted Frank on 9/11/17 electronically for some basement painting and repair work. He responded that they couldn't start work until mid October 2017, which I said was fine. Then...nothing. I reminded him via email on 9/21/17 that I still hadn't heard confirmation of when he could come by to provide an estimate. Promptly on 9/22 I received a response that he had been out of town and was catching up. Ok, weird but still within the margins of 'ok.' We took it to phone after that (at his request). He got back to me via texting. Also fine. After I had to reschedule the initial visit on 10/4 and moved it to 10/12/17, he confirmed via text. Still all good. Then he doesn't show up on 10/12. I text him asking where he was at and he called back and apologized, saying he couldn't make it due to kid issues. Ok, iffy but still ok. We rescheduled for 10/15. Frank did show on 10/15, took measurements for the project, stated they couldn't start until mid November 2017 but would provide me an estimate soon and we would schedule the work. We shook hands and he left. A pleasant experience. Fast forward to 10/31/17 (2 weeks later), I still had not heard back from Frank. I emailed him and asked if he intended to provide a quote. I didn't see a response until 11/9/17 (via email) in which he stated, "Sorry for the delay, have had a surgery come up and won't be working for 3-6 weeks. Haven't checked my email and didn't see this earlier." That's it. No commitment. No date when he might be back in action and would get a hold of me. No quote. Nothing. To this day, I still haven't received a follow up and long ago decided to find an alternative for the work. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but this was a grand waste of my busy time and I'm unsure how you operate a business in this fashion. Life and stuff happens, but I believe most customers expect clear communication and some sort of closure so they know what's up. Instead, I'm completely stumped. Did he not want to do the work? Is he unable to do it? Is he even still in business? Who knows? Only Frank.

He was at my house 2-3 hours and had to go to Home Depot to get some parts. He successfully changed out my garbage disposal and did a great job. We ran out of time with the TV mounting project since a lot of time was spent on reading the instructions and building the hardware, by the time he was ready to mount I had to run off to a meeting. I should have read the instructions and had the hardware assembled prior to...it would have saved me $50! And we would have had time to mount my TV. I needed to resurface two tub / showers in my 1956 apartment building. Jeff was prompt in generating his estimates, and reasonable in his bids. He was very responsive to my emails and phone calls. He coordinated and scheduled the jobs directly with the tenants, and showed up to perform the work on time. The first project was tiling the shower and replacing much of the plumbing that supplies it. Due to very uneven wall angles, an unleveled existing tub, and several other unanticipated hurdles, the job took Jeff far longer than he'd planned. Yet he did a very professional job of it, never complained, or hinted at increasing the cost of the job due to these surprises and extra work. The tenants were as pleased as I was with their new shower, the quality of Jeff's work, and their entire experience during the upgrade. The second project was installing a fiberglass surround in another apartment. In this case, the materials that I'd purchased were not compatible with my old steel tub. This required a parts run to Lowe's to buy a new surround, and since he didn't have my receipt, a second trip back to Lowe's to meet me there and return the original surround. Of course none of this extra work or time were anticipated when Jeff bid the job, but to my surprise (and to Jeff's credit), he refused my offer to increase the payment for this job due to my error. What's more, since the new surround materials cost less than the original materials he'd planned, Jeff reduced the materials portion of his quote to reflect the difference. It's quite rare these days to find a handyman who merely honors his promises - much less one who does the professional work, and goes to the extraordinary lengths that Jeff Herrera has. He's now certainly at the top of my Rolodex.
