I called Miah a few months ago about putting a bathroom in the upstairs of my house. The space was, for the most part, unfinished and had no plumbing running to it, so I had struggled to find a builder who would do the work for a reasonable price. Miah came over to take a look, and while he recognized that it would be a tough job, he had a solid vision for the space and gave a good estimate. We started construction a few months later, and the first order of business was plumbing. Nate, the plumber that Miah works with is top notch. He figured out the right configuration to squeeze a few pipes into the walls of my 130 year old house and within a few days had the space roughed in! I was ecstatic, as my other estimates had suggested this would be nearly impossible. Once we had that in place, Miah took over construction of a small wall for the shower and framed in the plumbing. You would never know what was behind the wall after he framed it and had his drywall guys cover it up. Things went smoothly with the tiling as Miah's tile subcontractor, Solimon, come in and knocked out the job in a few days. At this point the room had taken shape and I was truly surprised at the space Miah had shaped out of an oddly proportioned room. The recommendations on placement and Miah's suggestion to build a half wall for the shower meant that the whole room felt open and accessible. The final product is just incredible. I was so excited to use the room that I pestered my partner to move her things upstairs as soon as the sink was connected. The shower ended up being about twice the size I thought we could fit, and the toilet is nicely spaced. So far, the room has elicited nothing but jealousy from friends. Miah was a pleasure to work with and while there were a few hiccups (old houses have lots of surprises behind the walls), the project was finished pretty quickly and close to the original estimate. I got a handful of estimates for our basement bathroom remodel. Miah was the only one I found on Yelp, everyone who had actually had work done by him had great things to say. The reviews were accurate - we couldn't be more happy with the process and results of the work done by Black River Construction. As others have said, Miah says what he'll do and does what he says. Digging up concrete and knocking through walls in a 70 year old house there are bound to be some surprises, but the only extra costs we incurred were add-ons that we chose. He's punctual and accessible, got the job done in the time frame he'd given us, and our two year old still talks about him. The kind of guy you'd want in and out of your house for eight weeks. I wish I could rate these guys, but that would require that they send the bid they promised almost a month ago. During the phone call and the subsequent estimate, they continued to go on and on about how busy they were. I guess this extreme "busy-season" precludes them from getting back to people with cash in hand to spend on remodeling. I also thought it was interesting that they "don't give written estimates." I understand wanting to take time to give a good estimate that is indicative of the money it would take to complete the job, but I guess that a good explanation is that "we don't send written estimates because it is all we would be doing." I understand being busy, but customers want someone who can honor a commitment and not portray that their patronage is a burden. If you don't want the job, pass on it, but TELL your customer that is the case. It's unfortunate; there seem to be some great reviews here and I'm sure the work they actually do is good. However, when you respond to potential customers in a poor manner, I don't understand how you expect your business to be successful. read more

Maybe now you have a huge gaping hole in your basement wall and deep down you realize that you're in over your head. I highly recommend Miah of Black River Construction. Like Mighty Mouse, he'll come and save the day. He has over 10 years experience and is an excellent all-around contractor. I can personally attest to his carpentry, tiling, drywalling, and brick laying skills. Very reasonable flat rate hourly fee. He provides receipts for all purchases, so you know he's not marking up the supplies. Great communication. He provides ideas, listens to yours, and when the project mushrooms (as they always do in older homes) he lets you know what's going on and you decide where to go from there. Absolute dedication to quality. I've never met anyone, let alone a contractor, who was actually pickier than I was. He will lay your tile perfectly, or he won't sleep well that night. A rare trait, and one I appreciated. Additionally, he subcontracted the electrical work to a trusted electrician, again showing his interest in quality first. I'm sure he could have done the work himself, but he felt an electrician could do it better. Miah cleaned up after himself every single day. The beginning of the project was a lot of demo of plaster and lathe. If you have any experience with this stuff you'll know that taking it down is a total pain and extremely super messy dusty. Cleaning that up was not easy. He arrived when he said he would. No showing up super early and surprising you, no coming to work at noon. Punctual. With this trustworthiness, the best prices, and the best quality, the only reason you might not choose Miah for your home improvement project is that he works alone. He wouldn't trust any one else to do as good a job as he does! So if you have a massive project that needs to get done by Saturday before your in-laws come, his quote might not be the fastest. read more

I called Miah and Sean at Black River to put in a new bathroom and Egress window into my basement based on their reviews on Yelp. Within one week of agreeing on the estimate, Miah and Sean were putting in the Egress window, and by the following week they had started putting up the framing. I've never even heard of contractors that work that fast and are that punctual--most of my friends who have used contractors in Denver have to wait weeks to start their job and even then the work is shoddy. They were easy to contact via phone and email, and when they found a problem with my electrical system in my old house, they took steps to repair it the right way instead of ignoring it. The bathroom is beautiful and exactly what I wanted. I did have one problem with the shower door being lopsided upon installation, but eventually they did come back to fix it. I would have given them one 1/2 star off for this, but since they did a great job with the repair and 4 1/2 stars isn't an option, they get 5 stars. My family and I had a great experience with Black River Construction. We were in a race to have a section of our basement to be remodeled into a bedroom to make room for our arriving daughter! Because of how busy contractors are, especially for small projects, I lowered my standards and went with a contractor that just moved to the area. He did an absolutely awful job, was still "working" on the project well after our daughter was born, and in the end used all of our money without doing more than half of the job. I wonder if the guy had ever used a hammer before. We were desperate to find a contractor that above all had integrity, but also was professional and reasonable. We needed the majority of the previous contractor's work that was of poor quality to be replaced, and help us complete our room so we would have a place for our new daughter to sleep. We received three estimates. Miah was not the cheapest, but his eye for detail and honesty about what needed to be done convinced us. Also, his estimate was very thorough and itemized, which was a great comfort. Through the project, his communication was great and he was at our house when he said he would be. I also cannot say enough about the sub-contractors he used. They were very friendly great guys, and I felt very comfortable with them working on our house while my wife and daughter were home, or while we were on vacation.
