Great food, service and atmosphere. Waitress are always friendly, the owner will come to your table to make sure you're happy. They even get produce locally. The all you can eat broasted chicken is definitely one of the best. You can't go wrong with cheese and crackers and the chocolate cake is huge! This place is a little out of the way but worth the trip. We will stop here every time we are in the area. Things to keep in mind. They get busy so you may have to wait. Both times we have been we have not had to wait for longer than ten minutes. Food is not quick to come out, so don't be in a hurry. But I think it's worth the wait. Hope you enjoy! read more

For starters, they serve warm buns and cinnamon rolls with butter before the food comes out! With the broasted chicken or fish you can choose from a choice of French fries, potato pancake, mashed potatoes and also get a small side of coleslaw. For your first order, they bring out a set amount of pieces of both fish and chicken. For your next orders, you have to specify how many pieces of each you would like (and which parts of the chicken you want). As far as the service, I literally had to get up and go to the bar to have my soda refilled TWICE. and they were not busy at all to warrant me having to get my own soda. Went there tonight for the all-you-can-eat chicken, which also includes mashed potato, cole slaw and rolls (~ $17). The quality and taste of the chicken was excellent...could only handle 1.5 plates as first serving was generous. This place has a homey kind of feel to it and the inside looks like a farmhouse. The lights are somewhat dim and once evening comes they light some nice candles at your table which really adds to the experience. Our server was amazing. She was really attentive and kind to us. The other servers were also very kind and energetic; they really hyped you up to try new things. When we were seated at our table the server provided us with a bread basket that had two sweet, cinnamon roll-like breads and two plain rolls. We got the Wisconsin cheese curds for our appetizer and they were delicious. The curds are served in a basket and come with a hearty amount. For our dinner we got a chicken Parmesan which my partner stated was the one of the best he'd had due to the fresh taste of the ingredients. The chicken pot pie was amazing and those mashed potatoes were de-licious. It had to be the best pot pie I've ever had (even though this was my first time). The pie was backed to a perfect crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. We both got broccoli cheddar soups with our meals which were really good. Despite the wait time for our food being longer than we expected, the meal was worth it. All the ingredients taste fresh and that really adds the quality of the food. Overall I recommend this place. Crandalls has been my broasted chicken fix for years. Broasting just adds a flavor that I really like. We like their 2 piece $9.95 value meal that they offer in the restaurant till 2pm. I think it reasonably priced for 2 pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes, Cole slaw and bread. We usually get a breast and wing- which are on the small side, but still a value. They have a wonderful outside garden area and picnic benches in the front but, due to licensing issues, cannot allow people to eat there. On Wednesday, we stopped for our usual meal and enjoyed it until the check arrived. They had increased the price by $2. There was no mention of the increase and, since this is a special meal, it is not noted in the menu. So, no way to know until the bill. We also got a credit card surcharge on the bill. Again, no warning when handed the check, but it magically appeared when I paid. I talked to the manager about it and got nowhere. My issues: 1- They should be letting people know of the price change when they order. 2- There should be a note on the bill that says there will be a surcharge for credit cards. 3- For that price I would expect larger pieces of chicken. I have eaten other places with broasted chicken that are much better. One place offers a half chicken for $15.99 and give corn on the cob, mashed potatoes with gravy, Cole slaw and a freshly baked roll of bread. Oh, and a salad. We usually split the meal. This is a chicken place but on Fridays they have fish. I ate 6 pieces and it is good; not the best I ever had (I am not wild about their breading) but good. The meal was really a good deal and when we left we were so full. Friday's are crazy busy but they really get you seated fast. The waitress we had was stellar, for all of the people she was serving I didn't feel neglected. My husband and I went for dinner tonight, he had the chicken which was really tuff and dry. I thought I was safe getting a chicken Caesar salad (which I did not notice on the menu that it had mushrooms) 1/4 of it was mushrooms. The service was terrible, never came to the table to see if everything was ok, had to track her down when my husband wanted more chicken. Make sure you make a reservation for Father's Day was the first person in line only to be told I had to wait until everyone that had a reservation was seated mind you this place is huge. Then the food was horrible the eggs benidic where over cooked so was more like a hard boiled egg the world famous chicken was cold and tasted like it was from yesterday. Location / Atmosphere - An excellent option if you're looking for a dining experience with great food. Very clean and well managed. We have heard wonderful things about and felt that Crandall's is an excellent dining option in northern IL. Food / Beverage - A very nice menu of items that you might find at a 'supper club'. Being a Friday, we were looking for a 'fish fry' and Crandall's is the place. Both my wife and I had the 'fish fry' with 'potato pancakes' on the side. The fish was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The potato pancakes were a very nice side. Service - Very pleasant wait staff on such a busy night. Our server did a great job. Our wait was quite short given how busy the restaurant was. Certainly, a well-managed restaurant as there was plenty of staff on hand. And it's always nice to be served by people who don't mind being at work and have a positive attitude. In summary - A very nice place. We do plan to return and try other items from the menu as well as their Sunday Brunch. read more

I really enjoyed the chicken. The coating had real flavor and it wasn't greasy. 5 star chicken! Everything else was just ok. We came on a Sunday about 1pm. We weren't aware that they had a brunch buffet until 1:30. We were coming for chicken! We waited at the hostess stand for a while. The greeting was "how many?" We were led to a table. Nice table by the window with trellis and grapes and nice flowers. We had no menus. The server was more concerned about getting the creamers off the table into refrigeration than greeting us. This surprised me. The reviews that I read gave you the impression that service was going to be extremely friendly. So far host and server could care less that we were there. Finally the server took our drink order and said "help yourself to the buffet". I guess they just assume you know how the place operates. This gave me a chance to at least look at all of their offerings. The salads were sparse. The cucumber salad was the only thing that looked interesting. The hot food items included ribs and sausage with sauerkraut. Various potato items and mediocre looking other items. Nothing was really hot. I tried the mashed potatoes and the chicken. There were quite a few dessert items. My wife brought back a brownie, strawberry cheesecake slice, and some kind of peach or apple slop. I tried the brownie which was unremarkable. She didn't eat most of the slop. The restaurant is very dirty. Pushing my chair back in and out was disgusting with caked on grime. The carpet was incredibly stained. The restroom was a filthy mess. It irritated me also that "Brunch" is five dollars more than the chicken dinner we came in for. Of course the server never mentioned it prior to us seeing it on the check.
