We used to come here for Sunday brunch with my mom before she moved to the west coast - and as she passed away a year ago today, we decided we'd come here today in her honor, as she always liked the place. I always thought it was fine though not memorable, just your standard buffet, but I've read that they have new owners and I can tell the difference. Now, I can definitely see being a regular here, and coming to check out their other offerings too other than just brunch. Everything I tried was perfectly made, from the prime rib to the eggs benedict (really great!) to the desserts. Even the champagne was excellent! And the service was next level. My brother uses a walker and they gave us a choice of tables (any of them would have worked) and were so helpful in every respect (even accommodating his special request for something that wasn't on the buffet - they have saintly patience!). They were all just so NICE - having just moved back to the midwest from the west coast, I'm still getting used to midwesterner niceness, but even with that everyone here was exceptional. I'm looking forward to coming back not just for brunch, but also bringing friends back for the fish fry, which also sounds great. And for old-fashioneds! read more

We love going to this restaurant for Sunday Brunch and just did so this past week. They offer a very nice fresh and tasty salad bar, many different selections of breakfast dishes and main course offerings, fresh fruit and a variety of desserts plus endless champagne. Everything is always delicious and we end up eating way too much! It changed owners a few years ago and the new man is very personable and it's common for him to come around and mingle with guests and thank you for coming! My husband and I have lived in McHenry County our entire lives and have never taken the opportunity to dine at Big Foot Inn. That changed last night! We decided to take a 40 minute drive and try the Fish Fry. We got there at prime dinner time and only had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Our server Gwen came over right away to get our drink order, of course we had to have an Old Fashioned as this is my favorite drink and what is a Fish Fry without one? It took a bit for our drinks to arrive, the bar was very busy as well, but we did have water at our table (I don't recommend it as it had a well water taste). Once our drinks came, warm rolls and cold butter showed up right afterwards. We both ordered the fried fish and we were very happy when we learned it was cod and not haddock. My husband ordered the potato pancakes and I ordered the roasted potatoes as our choice of potato. We also ordered two cups of New England clam chowder. Gwen brought a relish and cracker tray which gave us more of a supper club dinner vibe! They also give you a family style bowl of warm German potato salad and the owner's recipe, made in house coleslaw. They also bring applesauce and tartar sauce for the table. The clam chowder was delicious. It had the perfect consistency that a cream soup should have. Dipping the dinner rolls in the soup was the best flavor combo. Our dinners arrived just as we were finishing our soup, perfect timing! We each got four pieces of breaded cod on our plates. It seemed a bit weird that they were cut into squares. The fish was not greasy at all, the breading was not heavy and the meat of the fish was thick, tender and had great flavor. I am not a fan of potato pancakes but my husband said I had to try these, so I did. They were very tasty and not pasty like most potato pancakes I have tasted. My roasted potatoes were seasoned perfectly and very yummy. I don't like German potato salad but my husband liked it so much he almost finished the bowl! We also thought the coleslaw was one of the best we've had. It was creamy and had delicious flavor. The tartar sauce was a traditional one and just how we like it. Back to the Old Fashioned's, while they were good as they had Korbel brandy, they were nothing to write home about and we didn't feel they were worth $10 each. The Fish Fry is currently $22.95 for either the fried or broiled dinner. The broiled dinner gives you one large piece of cod. There was plenty of food brought to our table to fill our bellies and I ended up taking home two pieces of my cod and two potatoes; however, we saw that they had carrot cake on the dessert menu so we had to order two pieces to take home. The carrot cake was $8 per slice. Our total was $120 before tipping Gwen. We definitely recommend Gwen as well. She was friendly, fun and attentive to not only our table but all of her tables were given lots of attention. Overall, the food was hot and delicious and the service was fantastic. We had a 6 PM reservation and arrived a little early. We were seated right away, but it was about 15 minutes before anyone came over -- the owner stopped by and said someone would be with us soon, but it would've been nice if he'd taken our drink order at that point. Another 10 minutes went by before our waitress came to take the order, and about 15 minutes more before the drinks arrived. By the time we placed our food order, it was already 6:30. The soup and salad came out quickly, but our entrees didn't arrive until 7:35 -- an hour later. At that point, we weren't very hungry anymore and just ready to wrap up. Our waitress never mentioned the delay or apologized, which made things feel a bit awkward. When we asked for boxes, she brought those along with the check, but it still took another 10 minutes to complete payment. The owner passed by and said, "Thank you for your patience," but there was no explanation or acknowledgment of the situation. On a positive note, the food was good -- we just wish the overall experience had matched it. Ambiance: The lighting in our dining area was very bright, and the monitor screen running ads throughout dinner took away from the atmosphere. Softer lighting, removing the screens, and adding small touches like a flower on the table could really elevate the dining experience. We truly hope this was just an off night, because the food shows promise -- the service and environment just need some fine-tuning. read more

Today was a pretty important day for me, and I was looking for a steak dinner. After a Yelp search of Northern Illinois, we settled on this place, which was a little over an hour from our home. The menu had 4 steaks on it, and I ordered their filet mignon, medium rare, with a baked potato with sour cream, and their regular sized bowl of French Onion soup (it was a slight upcharge, but SOO worth it.) My wife ordered their Osso Bucco which was lamb, along with their soup of the day, which was clam chowder. She thought the soup tasted more like chicken, but did find a clam in it. The interior attributes were nice lighting, nice wall artwork and nice carpets. That's hard to do in a restaurant, but they keep it clean here. The bathrooms were a bit dated, but were clean and did not smell bad at all. Before we could get to dinner, fresh dinner rolls and butter were provided. These were hot out of the oven, and went well with the butter. The restaurant also provided a relish tray with onions, carrots, radishes and celery, and a small cracker and bread stick assortment to choose from. This was accompanied by a cheese and pimento spread, which worked great. Dinner arrived. The filet was clearly dry aged, and it was cooked to medium rare as I had ordered it. It was served with au jus, was quite tender, and needed a little salt and pepper. The French Onion soup was marvelous - a nice layer of mozzarella cheese was baked over a nice piece of bread, and there were plenty of onions in the soup. The Osso Bucco was served with vegetables, noodles and sauce. The filet was served with vegetables and the hot baked potato. Wine was $7 for a pour of a house variety - no wine list other than what is in the menu, which was no names, Red - Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot, and White which I didn't note. Service was outstanding - the water stayed full, and our waiter Mike was very attentive. He brought my wife a box without being asked, and bagged the box for her after she transferred her leftovers to the box, again without being asked. Very good service. This place was busy on a Friday night - I'd suggest you phone ahead for reservations. We arrived a little early for ours, but were seated within three minutes at a nice booth. Other stuff: They do have a gambling machine area. They also have a pianist playing live music, who is quite good. If they are playing, leave a tip please - I did. Old school supper club charm literally Just south of the Wisconsin border in Illinois in the town of Bigfoot, yes there is a town in northern illinois called Bigfoot. Prices are comparable to other fine dining restaurants in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin in my eyes. Went for the King cut Prime Rib, $48.00, Did I think it was worth it? Absolutely! Was a bone in cut with an excellent seasoning, cooked to a perfec medium rare. The queen cut was $41.00, go big or go home. Wife had the Filet medallions in mushroom sauce. Her only complaint was they appeared to be cooked at a medium temperature. Still very tasty and they mushroom sauce was excellent (of course I had to sample) Dinner was served with a relish tray, hot rolls and a salad. Ok, I admit I know the owner. He and I worked at a greasy spoon where he was cooking at 14 or 15 years old, and I was waitress at 16 years old. That was 45 years ago! He actually learned to cook at the now defunct Raymond's Bowling alley in Johnsburg, IL at 13 years old. I couldn't believe he could execute the very large menu they had! I was in awe. Since then I have maybe seen him 5 times in the last 45 years, so.... I'm not writing this because he is my friend (although he always will be). Anyway you should also know that he chef'ed at a number of beloved dining spots around McHenry and Walworth County. 6 years ago he bought this supper club and I'm so proud of his accomplishment! The word supper club gets thrown around a LOT these days, because it is cool to be known as one. However, this IS a REAL supper club. Retro, not fancy decor and A nice drink menu with, of course, an Old Fashion. Then there is the relish tray and homemade cheese spread with crackers. Then comes some really delicious hot rolls and butter. Check, check, check; supper club. We were there on Thursday night which is "Italian Night." The chef had worked at Bimbos in McHenry and Tuscan in Lake Geneva. He knows Italian. My husband had the Giambotta and I had the salmon special pictured below. The Italian sausage on the giambotta was hands down the best I've evet had. I even saved some to make a great egg bake some morning. Also we had the baked French onion soup. Here's the thing... we are FOS snobs. It can't be too salty and tastes like Knorr boxed mix. It can't taste too sweet as to be cloying. It can't have a crouton so big that it sucks up the broth leaving you with mush and onions. The cheese can't be straight Gruyer and overwhelm the flavor m. THIS BAKED FRENCH ONION SOUP WAS SPOT ON! Yes, I just yelled that. So the execution on my fish was impressive. Not over cooked. The sauce did not overwhelm the dish. The capers were the big ones so you really get a burst of flavor. The spinach was freshly...lightly....sautéed. perfect. Lastly the potatoes. I don't know exactly how they made them but they were crunch on some sides, soft in the middle and laying on top of the sauce so as not to make the crispy side soggy. Perfect execution. Well, I've gushed enough, except to say that this morning my husband said to me that we have to go there more often. We have to think of it when we want to go for a nice ride in the country. Came here for Easter brunch. I was disappointed, but there is room for improvement. The wait staff specifically was very nice and helpful, they were not the issue. The issue was the buffet and some of the food. So the steam tables were not working well at all, and most of the food was barely warm. The fried chicken was raw on some of the bigger pieces. (There was actually blood). The "carving" station needed some work, I shouldn't get attitude for asking for a fresh piece. There was some decent food like the turkey in gravy and the stuffing which has to be one of the best stuffings I've had. The fresh salads were delicious. It's a beautiful place that has a lot of room, which was another plus. I have some suggestions please fix the steam tables and maybe invest in some new tables. Use the one room where the steam table is for just food and not have seating there. That way you can create a line and have more room for everything. It got packed. Also please serve drinks instead of just having juice for people to get, that was a lot of wasted space, putting lunch icepacks in the juice dispenser was kind of gross. (I'm not just some jerk off trying to tell you what to do, I've worked in the restaurant industry) I really hope they can get stuff figured out because they did have some great things to offer. Just steps from the WI line, but this place exudes Wisconsin Supper Club even if it is technically in IL. Our waitress was Liza and a wonderful, sweet, attentive one she was. We saw WI old fashioned cocktails on the special drink menu and my NJ husband wanted to try one for the first time. Liza made the drinks herself and they were spot on. Next we shared a wedge salad - loaded with bacon, tomatoes and of course home made rich blue cheese dressing. My husband had the shrimp/scallop diablo which he highly recommends. I had the pan fried walleye which was perfect with potato pancakes and sautéed veggies. Liza even brought me a small dish of applesauce for my pancakes - a nice touch. To top it off we shared a huge slice of carrot cake. All desserts are made in house. We can't wait for our next trip to Big Foot Inn. Nostalgic old time country feel. If you have never been to a super club then you must give it a try. The staff is very warm and generous. You can't find many places that still start you off with a relish dish. They have specials and are honest in recommending dishes to suit your taste. We have lived in Capron for many years and have passed it a number of times and said we would check it out. We ended up going last Thanksgiving day after our plans changed last minute. We fell in love. Highlights are an amazing Sunday Champagne Brunch, daily specials, the prime rib (it is *wow*), broasted their Italian food is really, really good. And French onion soup. All the soups I've had have been delicious. I love soup. The owners, Dominick and Maribel (they took it over ~5 years ago) are great people who treat their staff well. Most of their staff have been there for years, and they speak so highly of the owners. They buy quality product and it shows in the food. Dominick stops by our table every time we're in, and he remembers our names and details of our previous conversations. It's the little things. Oh, and a shout out to all the staff, but to our first and favorite server, Mikaela (probably have spelled her name wrong). If you're a sucker for dessert like I am, the carrot cake is the best I've ever had. As someone who used to weigh 400lbs, I know carrot cake. My Italian hubby says the tiramisu is the best he's ever had. Maribel makes all the desserts. If you're there for the brunch, grab a lemon square (or 5) - it's so good! As with any supper club, there's a well stocked bar. The drinks aren't cheap, but they're strong! The food is very fairly priced. The portions are more than ample. Dinners come with a relish tray, soup or salad and some of the best fresh bread I've had in a long time. The decor is outdated but the place is clean. I choose great food and service over decor any day. The bathroom is immaculate. I can't be the only one who uses the bathroom at a place I visit the first time to judge if I want to eat there. First time here, on a Thursday which is Italian night, which means they add several extra Italian dishes to their regular Italian menu. My wife and I both upgraded to the cheese baked French onion soup for around $3.50 each. Good, HOT, plentiful for a "cup". Both of us will try their soup of the day (or regular onion) next time to change it up and save room for dinner. I opted for the chicken Vesuvio special and have a big lunch left for tomorrow. It consists of approximately half a chicken cut up, but not boneless and large potato wedges and vegetables with the Vesuvius sauce. That is fantastic. My wife had the Country Rigatoni , and she too, was happy and also has a lunch tomorrow . Our entrées, and most on the menu, are in the mid 20s. Steaks are in the mid to upper 30s. So generally, this is a very reasonable place to eat good food. Our server was tops which is hard to come by these days. The husband of the owner couple stopped by to see how we were doing and is a really nice guy that cares about his business and has nothing but good to say about many other businesses in the area. This ended up being a huge disappointment. We arrived at our seating time and other guest were lined out into the doorway. It took 20 minutes to be seated which could be understood due to it being Thanksgiving. Sadly, they placed tables upon table to fit the most people possible. The buffet table was maybe 10 feet long and the food looked disgusting. Two other tables were set with pasta but these too looked bad with dried out pasta. We were finally seated but determined that the setting and terrible looking food were not worth $40 p/p and left. Sorry but we will never return read more
