Went there for Mother's Day Brunch, what a mistake. $100.00 for two adults and two kids and we've had better meals at HomeTown Buffet. Everything was cold and not well displayed. Watery scrambled eggs, bloody beef, and a messy selection of not very appetizing items. The restaurant was extremely loud. The servers and staff were sloppily dressed in T-shirts, shorts, etc as if they were ready for a picnic or romp in the woods. Even their 'World Famous' Chicken was dried out and overdone. I also think there was 'fish' but not really sure it was fish-although it smelled like dead alewives on a beach. What a waste! read more

The old owner made this restaurant a huge success The chicken went down hill, the service used to be awesome with 5-6 lady's that were the heat in providing customer service The help they have now need to be trained that it's the customer that makes you money and if you don't like your job find something else Under the old owner my family would go there 3-4 times a month ! So we were coming back from lake geneva and decided instead of eating there we could stop at Crandalls. I have driven past this place several times and have never stopped. It was a sunday mid afternoon. The place was not at all full just a great others in the restaurant but it felt nice. Family place known according to their menu the all you can eat chicken. So I had to order the chicken dinner. My wife decided to get the chicken pot pie. Waitress was very nice. The pot pie came with a sales. The chicken dinner didn't which I thought was strange. So I watched my wife eat her salad. I did eat the cinnamon rolls that came with the bread basket. This was a nice touch. They were a cross between a normal dinner roll so not much cinnamon or icing just a drizzle. The food came out fast. Typical chicken dinner with the white meat consisting of the chicken wing. I like dark meat so it was fine. The dinner came with whipped potatoes which were your typical instant version. Gravy was good coleslaw came as well in a plastic cup. That was good as well. Strange the cole slaw didn't come in a nice dish. They did ask if I wanted to get more chicken. I got one more price. It was good and crunchy. My wife likes the pot pie except the prices of chicken were huge. Looks like someone literally plucked the left over pieces of chicken and they used those pieces in the pie which is what you do but at least cut up the chicken so they are bite sized. Overall good not great but not bad. Worth the experience. I would go back again. read more

This place is terrible. Super slow service, the waitress came to our table maybe 3 times in over an hour and a half. She didn't bring us any silverware or napkins. The food was awful it actually tasted like hospital food. If I could give this establishment a 0 star review I would. I would not recommend coming here ever for anything. read more

We visited Crandall's today with a party of four around 3:30 pm. We have eaten there before and really enjoyed the chicken and desserts. The room was about a third filled when we were seated. very Soon a large party of around 40 people were seated at the back of the room. It immediately became abundantly clear that there were not enough staff to take care of this large group reservation and to give the rest of the customers the attention which we deserved. Our orders were not filled in a timely fashion. The waitresses did not keep up with service to our table or the other tables. I heard several of the surrounding tabled grumble about the lack of service. When I paid the bill, I asked to speak to the manager. I told him that the waitresses were really overworked and more staff should have been on board to deal with the large reservation party. I blamed the management for not planning ahead. The hostess should have advised us of the large party coming in and afforded us the option of sitting in another room. Instead of accepting responsibility and at least offering an apology for the very poor service, the manager blamed me for not asking for another table despite our being halfway through our meal when the poor service became apparent. A simple apology would have sufficed. read more

This place was hopping on a Saturday night! The lot was full but surprisingly we had only a very short wait. Everyone was super friendly at the country eatery. Our server, Andi, must have been very busy yet we never felt rushed or found our selves waiting for anything. The food was great! We both had all you can eat chicken with mashed potatoes and slaw. The creamy slaw could have been the main event! The owner stopped by and chatted. She even bussed some dishes off the table!! Great chicken, seriously I was amazed. I was there for lunch service was decent once the server got to us to take are order.

My parents live about an hour away, but occasionally visit and have raved about their food. I finally took a trip with my Mom last night and was not disappointed. We arrived at around 5pm, so the only chicken option was the "all you can eat chicken." While it reads "chicken," it also includes a.y.c.e biscuits, mashed potatos, cole slaw and drink refills. I went with that. Every item on my plate was delicious, and seemed like it was home-made. While the chicken was not the best I had ever tasted, it was quite good. The potatos were excellent, and the cole slaw was even better. It was just like a home cooked meal. After polishing off a couple of plates I decided to at least try one of their pies. I received a huge piece of the chocolate cream pie...wow...it was fantastic. In terms of the service, I thought it could have been better. The waitress was attentive but things seemed a bit rushed. Overall, it was fine. The bill (for two) ended up being $45 with tip. Considering the amount and quality of the food, I thought it was a great deal. If you love fried or broasted chicken then this is THE PLACE to go! This restaurant offers an all you can eat broasted chicken dinner that comes with your choice of potato (fries or mashed) and coleslaw. They also have a Sunday brunch that is very popular. My family craves their chicken so much that we are always willing to make the 1 1/2 hour drive just to get there. I'm torn on Crandalls- I feel I need another visit there to really form a true opinion, but I can't bring myself to take the drive out there to try it again- that probably speaks for itself. My family and I visited Crandalls due to RAVE reviews on their broasted chicken (I believe the referred word was 'crack chicken'). How can I pass up crack chicken! We arrived when they were seating their last customers for the night, but were assured we were not there past our welcome. The waitress took our order for two all you can eat broasted chicken dinners, and brought them out about 10 minutes later. Then in typical all you can eat fashion, completely disapeared, lol. Out of the first three pieces of chicken we were served, the largest piece had plenty of meat on it, and the other two were slim pickins. When we did get another plate each, the same seemed to be the case with those pieces- hard to find a piece that had some good chicken pickin on it. The mashed potatoes and slaw were nice, but nothing to write to yo country grandma about. I will say that although we left full, the bill was pretty sizable for our dinners, and the chicken left a little something to be desired. My husband and I's joint opinion is that although Crandalls is good eating, we just don't know if we'd be itchin to go back any time soon. And as a side note to poster Ryan H- while I agree that the 'no doggy bags' policy does make for a trash can full of food- the purpose of the rule is so fatty 2x4's or just plain greedy people don't come to all you can eat dinners, say they want 10 more pieces, and then immediately ask for a doggy bag to go- instantly giving themselves dinner for the next week. Yes, you are paying for the chicken- ALL YOU CAN EAT at the time of service, not all you can eat and fit in a to go doggy bag. read more

It was nothing special but I didn't have the roasted chicken that I guess they are known for. I had the country chicken which was a chicken breast stuffed with wild rice and it wasn't bad. I just didn't get what all the hype was about. We didn't have bad service and for the amount of people that were there It did move quick for a Saturday night. I'm not going to repeat what I have read in so many reviews here... You can smell the great aroma of fresh chicken cooking. The owner is very passionate about quality and is as friendly as apple pie. We were told about Crandalls by a girl that grew up near by and she said if we didn't like it she would pay! Ok, on a few more recent visits, I decided to knock Crandall's from 3 stars to 4. The restaurant recently got new owners, and the food has remained the same, top notch (especially the chicken and fish fry). But one thing noticeable is that the staff seems to be more attentive and friendly under the new owners, unlike before under previous ownership. read more

Let me start off by saying that this place has excellent food. I had the broasted chicken and it was amazing. My fiance ordered a chicken pot pie. I tried some of it and it too was great. The service, on the other hand, was sorely lacking. Our waitress came over after quite some time, took our order, and then disappeared until our food eventually came out. I did see people who came in after us get their food before we did. When we did speak to our waitress, she seemed like she wanted to be anywhere but here. Business must be too good for them to care about bad service and cold food. I went here last night with my family and two other families... Party of ten. We had 8 of the 10 people waiting and they said we couldn't sit down until everyone was present.... LIE. After everyone showed up they then put our name on a waiting list for another 25 minutes. Then we sat down and for another five minutes no one waited on us. When we finally were asked what we wanted she took another ten minutes to come back with drinks..by this time some of our party went to the bar and already came back with their own drinks. Moving on to the food...its Friday and most of our party ordered fish fry, but you cant order more than one piece at a time and you better not change your mind between broiled and fried because once you order one kind, your stuck. four of the ten people who ordered food were served cold dishes. At the end of the night after the server already knew we were served cold food and did nothing, she put her 18% gratuity on our bill...I guess because in her mind we were the privileged customers to be eating at "Crandalls". After we payed, I asked to speak to the manager. Now this woman looks at me like Im a peice of crap before I even speak...once I tell her about our bad service and cold food she tells me: "you know sir, the server can only carry so much food at a time on her tray!" I asked her what the heck does this have to do with being served two cold plates of fish, one cold plate of chicken and one cold plate of steak? to which she tells me, no one told her about my problem and she doesn't know what to say...I told her she should "start by apologizing..." to which I was just given a dirty look as she turned her back to me...HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE...COLD FOOD...HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. These people act like they are doing you a favor by being open...there are way too many better places to eat than this place...they just lost more then the ten people they treated poorly! I will continue to tell all my friends and family about my experience ...the only reason they get a star in my book is for their drinks. read more

New ownership for about a ur now. U need to ask for Sheila or Perin to take care of u as they r the only ones who really know what's going on. There are A couple of younger servers with major attitude. Intentionally will hold ur meal up if they thk u will require anything of them. It is worth the drive! By far (no pun intended) it is the best broasted chicken (and according to my husband, the fish too) is the best I have ever had. Someone else described it as "crack chicken", and I can totally relate. Once you start eating it, you don't want to stop! Good thing it is all you can eat, which for me was about 4 pieces and I was stuffed. Potato pancakes were outstanding. The food was very good and the atmosphere was quaint. Unfortunately the service was horrible. You here were customers that were seated at the same time as we were and others that were seated after we were and received their food well before we did. Our waitress never checked on us while we ate our meal. She was overly attentive to the other customers that she was waiting on. We waited for 10 minutes for our check and it was apparent that we were finished with our meal. We finally got up and went to the entrance of the restaurant where the hostess was and asked her to please get our bill so that we could pay and leave. She offered no apology. Finally our waitress brought the bill over to where we were waiting. My husband asked her if we did something to offend her because she ignored us the entire time we were there after she took our order. Her response was that she was busy. I gave her cash to cover our bill and tip, she said she would get us change and I told her that was not necessary and left the restaurant. We eat out very frequently and we never been treated this poorly. I would like to return to Crandall's and enjoy more of their delicious food. If I get the same waitress I will ask to be seated at another table. read more

I haven't been to Crandalls for many years and wanted to go back and visit the big chicken again! The boyfriend and I went at prime time on a Friday night because we were craving some Fish Fry. We were not disappointed! Even with a full parking lot we were seated immediately and had not one but two servers at our table taking care of us. Our drink order came quickly. We ordered appetizers; the combo basket, and it came to the table hot and yummy. The zucchini was not soggy or slimy as it can be if cooked too long. The waitress was very attentive and gave us time between courses to enjoy the food and cute/charming atmosphere. The BF asked for the Walleye fried instead of broiled or baked as listed on the menu and the reply was,"of course we can do that for you!" Nice to hear that they can and will do specials after reading all the totally negative reviews on here! Walleye = delicious! I ordered the Fish Fry. Hot, flavorful, NOT greasy and delicious. Four big pieces on the plate with some good tartar sauce and just the right amount of mashed with gravy. Once again I am reminding myself that when reading reviews; some people can only criticize and have no praise other than for themselves. Crandalls is a wonderful restaurant with very good food, excellent service, and a wonderful home town atmosphere. Oh, and I checked the menu - no one HAS to go there and eat fish or chicken they don't like. The menu is LOADED with healthy options that might be able to please the complainers in the crowd. Went here with a group because a few of them grew up in the area and this place has been around forever. Not normally a place I would choose. The term broasted chicken always reminds me of diners on the side of the road during driving vacations we used to take with our family (along with pecan logs!). But hey, they are a fun group, and it was more about the company than the food. We went on a Friday and they have all you can eat fish fry, or the broasted chicken. It comes with cole slaw, fries (or potato pancakes or mashed potatoes). Most of us got the fish fry with a few going for the combo of BOTH chicken and fish. I have to say... the fish was hot, flaky and delicious. It was a bit heavily battered, but you kind of expect that with fish fry at a restaurant almost on the border of Wisconsin.. right? The cole slaw was good, nothing special. One diner said the potato pancakes were good. I have to say, however, the fries were quite yummy! Nice and crispy....and hot. I could eat an entire plate of them. I did try my husband's chicken. Yes, it's good. It's juicy. It's just really heavy... I guess I thought broasting was some kind of lighter coating... not so. The bar area looked nice. I'm more of a "pub" style person, and would have preferred eating in there as opposed to the family room feel of the room where we ate. (Although there was a nice Christmas Tree in the room that cheered things up a bit). Lots of "large" people (that's what happens at all you can eat restaurants.... just ask my daughter who works at Golden Corral) getting plates and plates of rolls, fries, chicken, fish, etc.... they just kept loadin up. All in all, it's not someplace I'd go out of my way to frequent. It's pretty far north. There's something to be said for a place that's been around for so long... they must be doing something right. They were welcoming and very nice. The beers were cold, and the company was good, and I was certainly full when I left. And I can't remember the last time my husband and I went out for a dinner that included a few beers and got out for under $40. read more

My family has been coming to Crandall's for Friday night fish for years, and I've been coming for the broasted chicken - it is fantastic! Every time we go, the food is hot, fresh, and delicious. If you go on Friday for fish, go early, or be prepared to wait - we typically have a large party, and expect to wait 20-30 minutes. Like most places, the waitstaff has their moments of slowness, but over the past 10 years I've never had a cold plate or a rude waiter or waitress. If you don't have time to sit down, try their carryout - while clearly not "all you can eat", their carryout portions are generous and always hit the spot! read more

I have a strong aversion to buffets for obvious cootiful reasons. If you only offer a buffet brunch on Sunday, pay someone to stand at the tables so nobody has to see the old lady grabbing chicken with her fingers because she can't find the tongs that were accidentally put in the fish bin. If you are vegetarian or vegan this is not the place for you. They have no vegan options whatsoever and I specifically told them no dairy and no meat with my order and it ended up coming with cheese. Also the wait was absolutely absurd. I do not recommend this place. If you want fried chicken go to kfc and save some money read more

We were out on Sunday 4/15/2012 , we have been comeing to the restaurant since the mid seventies, through several owners and a fire. I do remember the original people well. Any way not to bore you we had for our dinner the same entree for both of us. We had 2 chicken breasts 1 baked potato and coleslaw. each. It was as usual great can't complain service was allso great, what wasn't great was the 43.00 price thats includeing tip. At jewel I can buy chicken breasts in a 3 pack for 5.00 I can allsobuy alot of ice tea for 5.00 and a baked potato for under a buck. Hey guys a little help here, not a good way to run a restaurant nothing on the menu about price. I am one of those guys who is starting this off by saying I've never written a review before, and I haven't. Don't even know how much I believe in doing so, but after last night I felt obligated to do so. So we went to Crandalls on a Saturday night sat around 7 left around 7:20, with no one ever coming to the table. They weren't busy, at all. Not one time after the host sat us did anyone ever come to the table, the table directly behind us got a birthday cake, ate it, paid the bill, before we decided to leave. I really wanted to enjoy this place. I'm not quick to voice my opinion, my wife whose idea it was to leave is in the industry. A little courtesy and common sense goes a long way, I will share this experience with everyone I meet. read more
