A WONDERFUL dining experience in Bismarck ND! We were greeted with friendly staff, a beautiful array of vintage & contemporary Christmas fare, all in a clean & attractive store. Our server Andy was 1st rate, friendly, attentive & professional. I chose the Country Turkey dinner, the Turkey was flavorful, moist with a crispy coasting, the okra was perfectly cooked, delicious green beans have replaced the formerly greasy version, the cranberry sauce was a pleasure to the palate and the cornbread was AMAZING, moist inside with a slightly crispy crust! My husband, 4 daughter, and I are on a road trip and stopped here for lunch. We got greeted and sat right away. We got there about 1:30 and it wasn't very busy. Our server greeted us and took our drink order right away. She was super friendly and helpful. We ordered the chicken pot pie, chicken and dumplings, mothers pancake breakfast, and the French toast. Pancakes breakfasts were huge, my girls could of shared it and been full. The chicken and dumplings were very blah and tasteless. The dumplings were like half cooked flour balls, not the normal dumplings we were expecting. The chicken pot pies were also huge, they could of easily fed 2-3 people. They came out luke warm and tasted like stove top stuffing and not much like a chicken pot pie. Meals all came with biscuits. There are a lot of side options for your main course. French toast came out a bit burnt. Overall experience was ok. Food wasn't great. Service was awesome. There is a store attached that the girls had a blast looking and buying stuff from. Let's start with the unfriendly reception we received from the person seating us. Then we waited for a long time for our food. Our waitress told us they were short staffed. It's amazing how tabled parties that were seated after us all received their food first. I requested my eggs cooked softly scrambled. The waitress said the cook was unable to cook the eggs like that. My bacon was raw. I must say this is the worse Cracker Barrel I've ever been too. I am sorry if this place represents North Dakota because I would never come back. Best Cracker Barrel we've had. Several months ago it was mediocre, but now it's much improved. Crispy Okra, perfectly cooked chicken, and more deals and drinks available. Nothing fancy, I had pancakes, eggs, bacon and coffee. The eggs were cooked correctly, big fluffy pancakes, semi crisp bacon and good coffee. I can't recall my servers name but she was outstanding with a bright smile and great attitude. I have been to 3 or 4 Cracker Barrels with only one being a poor experience and the rest being positive experiences. It is a good breakfast stop when I am on the road. This was the worst meal I have ever had. I initially ordered the meatloaf. Not edible. Dry, fell apart, horrible mashed potatoes. The server suggested trading it for the special of the day, turkey and dressing/sweet potatoes. Processed turkey roll, gelatinious gravy, overly sweet potates. You know you are in for a disappointment when the food comes 3 minutes after ordering it. I can only imagine big vats of processed food in the back. HOWEVER the server was Sydney and she was awesome. I'm not sure if staff was overwhelmed as it was a very busy Sunday but I have to admit not one of us were satisfied with our meals. Some of our food was cold and stale, some was either undercooked or over cooked. Our waitress was openly on edge. Over all it was disappointing to say the least. Very inefficient system for checking in. The store was SO crowded with a line waiting to be seated that we could hardly even put our name in at the desk. Not really impressed. Used to be good. Then they changed the country fried steak. Not as good. Also, the cook messed up and put gravy on the steak. I can't eat the gravy. When I asked to get another, they took it in the back, scraped off the gravy and flipped it to the other side. Great way to have people never come back. This was Sunday dinner for me..I ordered the crispy fried chicken, requested no chicken breast! As you can see that is pretty much all i got..they said i have two sides so I chose salad and mashed potatoes..if you see by the picture the ham or bacon ( not sure what it.was) is not even cooked or else just scraped off the bone, either way not edible...I.tried to eat the breading on the chicken but it was solid...then was checking over my receipt, they even charged me $2.49 for the side that came with this delicacy ...On the plus side, my husbands pot roast was very good, could use a bit more veggies but good.. i feel i have wasted my 15 dollars for my dish..what do you think? read more

Today me and my family went and dined at old reliable Cracker Barrel. The restaurant was quiet and very old western themed. The gift shop at the front is always a nice add on to the dining experience but let's talk about the food. I ordered the cheesecake stuffed pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon. The service was fine though we waited at least and hour for our food. The pancakes were sweet fluffy and crispy on the edges. The scrambled eggs were standard and the bacon was cooked perfectly. Carol C. was our waitress and she gave us exceptional service. She was generous and checked on us several times with drink refills. She made sure we were satisfied throughout our meals. Our orders came very quick and food was all delicious- we had three different dinners- chicken tenderloins, chicken fried steak and roast beef. I had the roast beef and it was very tender. We tried this Cracker Barrel in Bismarck three years ago and was very disappointed with the food and service. I gave it one star at that time. They seemed to be out of the food we ordered and what we did get was terrible. We were traveling through again and remembered that bad experience. Went on a Sunday night. Attempted their competition TX roadhouse across the street. 90 min wait so I bolted over. Within 10 minutes I was seated. Within 29 minutes of arriving my order was placed. Food came out hot. The catfish was as good as frozen fillers could be. The turnips were decent. The fried okra was steaming hot. The first were really grainy. Could've cooked longer. The pancakes were delicious and fluffy. The service was ok. The waitress hardly came around and had to ask other servers for items. But when asked they were delivered promptly. My key tipping point is my beverage. Waited a very long Rome for a refill. Point is in less than 90 minutes my meal was complete and I was back at my hotel. read more

Decent food at decent pricing. The average Entrée is around $11, comes with two sides and is enough food to share or take home left overs. I'm not that big on country/comfort food. I'm sure if I was, the Cracker Barrel would earn 4 stars from me. The menu has a wide variety of southern and traditional American dishes. The side items span from apple pie filling, steamed veggies, to macaroni and fries. Plenty to choose from. The food is pretty good flavor wise. I did notice that the chicken and dumplings seemed like they came from a pre-made batch that had been brewing since opening. But what do you expect? It's not gourmet. I doubt dishes like that would be efficient to make to order. The main theme of the Cracker Barrel is southern comfort food. The ambience is hardcore country with vintage folk art and antique posters. Really cute theme, actually. Service isn't amazing, but it hasn't ever been bad, either. I wanted to make a stop at Cracker Barrel while on the road since I knew I'd never have the urge once I was settled back in Minnesota. We saw a sign outside of Bismarck and I gently demanded we stop here for a late lunch. It was around 3pm and there were only two other tables. I ordered ham with sides of dumplings and vegetables (to balance out the dumplings), and my dish also came with biscuits and corn muffins (to balance out the vegetables). My boyfriend had trout with steak fries and two other sides that I can't recall. The muffins and biscuits were a little on the dry side and overall I would pronounce the food bland and safe. However, unlike the two other tables we were fully aware that we were at a CHAIN RESTAURANT IN NORTH DAKOTA so we didn't complain about a thing. I don't know who goes to a Cracker Barrel in the third least populated state in the country and expects fine dining or exotic cuisine, but they were also having lunch at 3pm on a Tuesday so apparently they exist. The waiter (and eventually manager for one of the tables) handled their displeasure graciously and we made sure to be super duper nice to him to make up for their snottiness. I was embarrassed for the other tables. Come on, people. The creepy (comforting by American standards?) thing about Ye Old Cracker Barrel is that all the stores are exactly the same. Exactly. I could have sworn the place we ate at two weeks ago was the same one my dad and I ate at in 2001 on another cross country road trip (the first time I voluntarily uprooted my entire life), except that one was somewhere in-between Minnesota and Maryland and that probably rules out North Dakota. Probably. Let me check a map... If you want a huge menu filled with familiar, unsurprising, under-seasoned, possibly once frozen, probably not very healthy comfort food options, Cracker Barrel is a good bet. If you want something else, DON'T GO TO CRACKER BARREL. Or at least don't complain about it. It's not their fault if you want something they never promised. read more

You can't buy anything from the retail side on Sunday morning thanks to some stupid law in ND... really!?!?!? before I get on a plane to leave I can't get any of their fun snacks. Gah. The food is relatively consistent. It is always good country style cooking. Unfortunately, the service is not always the best. You really never know what you'll get. The bacon was over cooked, the sausage had a strange off-flavor, and the eggs were undercooked, which is not something you want with scrambled eggs. When I go to the Cracker Barrel back home I always have a great experience. This particular one was not the best. I was seated and it was at least seven minutes before anybody came to ask for my drink order. When the waitress family came over she was a bit snippy. She said I was in the kitchen waiting for food to be finished. If it took seven minutes, why did you not come out while it was still being cooked? Once I did receive my food not once did she check on me to see if everything was OK. Only when I was close to being finished Did she stop back but only to give me my check. My server was nice. That's the positive. They were out of a bunch of stuff that I'd tried to order. I ended up with the pork chop. Fried apples and cucumber tomato onion salad, salmon pair on the side and sweet tea. The only thing worth eating, the apples. Everything else tasted gross or just blah. I hadn't been to a Cracker Barrel in years and decided to try it again. Around dinner time on a Saturday, it wasn't that busy. I ordered the chicken and dumplings because like others have said, it's a nice comfort food. The food wasn't anything special, but it hit the spot. One of the only things I remembered about Cracker Barrel was the root beer, so I got one of those too. What made the stop worthwhile was our waitress, Elizabeth. She is one of the best waitresses I've had in awhile anywhere, if not the best I've ever had - checking in on us, joking around, and making us feel right at home. Very rarely do I remember a server I've had at a restaurant, but I will remember her amazing service from now on. read more

Pretty good! I've been coming to this Cracker barrel since it first opened in the early 2000s (or late 90s? I don't recall). I remember lines out the door. Now it's much quieter but the food is as consistent as always. There are a few vegetarian options (sides) which is nice. Not vegan friendly (but honestly did you think it would be?) Every time I've been in it's clean and the store is always nicely stocked. The service is average. My latest visit was a Monday night (almost empty dining room) and the waitress was nice enough but had more fun chatting with the other servers in the back than checking on us. So we had to wait awhile for various things. But that's ok, we aren't too picky. Anyway, Cracker Barrel is a chain which offers consistency and once in awhile that's nice! Especially if you like comfort food. read more
