Wow. Wondered in off the street and got the Hatchback Burger. The sauce on the burger was incredible and I'm not even big on sauces. Wow this place is the real deal. Homemade fries where they slice up the potatoes for you right there at the bar. I got some kind of bacon jam burger and man was it good. It was delicious and filling. The sauces they have there for your homemade fries are plentiful and delicious. The dude at the bar rattled off 20 different sauces you can dip your fries into. They also have the biggest selections of beers on tap as well. Also the place is spotless and the AC is cranked down low on those hot summer days. This has always been one of my favorite go to places. It has been quite some time since my last visit, and I think it is time for me to go again sometime soon. My favorite burger is the 3rd Street, with bacon, American cheese, and BBQ sauce. I would always get this with BBQ chips and a side of ranch. I am making myself hungry right now. Came in straight from the airport. I had a decent beer from Laughing Sun, and the Nashville chicken sandwich. This place is apparently known for their burgers so maybe that's what I should've gotten. It wasn't bad, but it was saltier than maybe I would've liked. I don't understand when the new craze of offering everything a la carte started but I think they could've included fries or chips for the sandwich price (which honestly wasn't too bad). Service was friendly and the food came out insanely fast. I would stop back if I were somehow in town again, and I'd try a burger. read more

Sunday evening and I popped in to JL Beers for a classic burger and a beer. Neat little spot, perhaps a little "divey" but they do an excellent job of serving up what they're good at. I was sitting at the bar so I not only watched my own burger being grilled but I saw them freshly cutting fries (not for me!) and cooking them to order. I chose the "Rajing Cajun" burger and added an extra patty. Cooked right then and there then served up fresh. It was tasty and the grilled onions were perfection. Instead of fries, I went with cole slaw which was just okay. Neat little bar that features at least two dozen different taps. I liked their motto at this location, seating for 1,000....43 at a time. Another of their mottos is short on space, big on everything else. They are pretty well known in the Dakotas and Minnesota (JL Beers is a small chain) for having great burgers and fries, but no so much in the rest of the US. I stopped in to try their burger which is only a 1/4lb patty that is pressed and cooked to medium well, so there is no pink. There is only 1 specialty burger on the menu that's already double patty, but you can add a 2nd patty to any burger for 2.49. I knew they had a lot of beers and I was originally going to try one, but instead saw they had Schell's 1919 draft root beer, so I went with that. It was super creamy as advertised. I added one of their new burgers, the bacon cheddarpeno and fresh cut fries with sea salt added. Overall, a pretty good meal that hit the spot. All locations supposedly are small venues with long bars and a lot of beers on tap. I'd say their business model is pretty successful so far. read more

We ordered the loaded fries and the JL Burger, two patties and cheese and bacon The loaded fries come with ample cheese sauce, bacon, jalapenos, and awesome garlic/parmesan seasoning. The flavors are intensely savory, a great way to soak up beer. Their fries are thinly sliced which aids in their absorption of their toppings. The burger was large and delicious. The beef blend was loosely packed and extremely fresh tasting. I want to emphasize how delicious this beef blend was. It rivaled the $25 "Emmy" burger in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for sure and is up there with the Blue Ribbon at Minetta Tavern in Manhattan. I really liked how fatty, loosely packed, and juicy the beef blend was. For the price, JL Beers has some awesome burgers. If you're hungry, go with a two-patty burger. While most ND burgers euphemistically taste like nothing more than moose shit between spruce bark, JL Beers creates a burger that is OUTdamSTANDING!! It was fresh tasting and not bland or dripping with 90w oil/grease. Okay, this place is pretty awesome! The beer selection is over the top. I tried several and enjoyed each of them. They were out of the one I really wanted, which was a bummer, but the waiter was very knowledgable and helpful. I had the 3rd Street Burger - simple burger with bacon, american cheese and BBQ sauce. The waiter suggested cole slaw, but I chose not to follow that recommendation. I asked which to get, chips or fries. The waiter said both were great, but he leaned towards the chips. Good choice! I'll back up a bit and mention I sat outside. It's a very nice area, one side covered with a pergola, which was just starting to grow it's cover. The other side is open. If you like sun, then you have that option. If you prefer shade, you can find that too. There was a fireplace in the back. I assume they light that on cool nights? I don't know, but bottom line is I highly recommend eating outside. Back to the food - the burger was very good. It was not swimming in BBQ sauce, which was good. There was plenty of flavorful, thick bacon. Every bite from my first to my last included all the ingredients. None of them disappeared along the way. So while it was not an extraordinary burger to look at, it was built to please and it was indeed delicious. The chips... they were fantastic. You can order them spiced differently. I chose sea salt. Apparently, I am not too adventurous. Anyway, they were crisp and I could tell they were freshly made. They must use some type of potato spiral thingy because that's how the chips come. Some of them are attached in long spiral strands. To me this was a sign of freshly made chips. It took me some time to eat the burger and chips, which is one reason why I'm glad I got the chips. I think fries are better hot and with the time it took me to finish my plate, I'm not sure the fries would have held up. That said... I didn't get the fries so don't take my word on it. If you like fries, try 'em! I'm just saying the chips weren't hot, didn't need to be hot and were just as good by the time I got to the last one as when I took my first bite. This place is great. If the weather permits (meaning as long as it's not 100 degrees out), I'll be back. read more

When we called to inquire about prices, the guy that answered was extremely short and rude. On our opinion, the customer service is just as important as the quality of food and rink. First I am a west coast guy and we don't have "beer chesse" and if we so never heard of it until coming here. I ordered the ravin Cajun because I saw another review and it was ok. I was unaware of this beer cheese thing so that's my fault I have no issues with the fries. But the burger patty was depressing. It was not a good mid west burger it was smaller than a McDonald's cheeseburger. Other than the patty the food was great. This might be the place to have "that" burger you remember and have been in search of for a long time. First of all, there aren't like 50 versions of the beloved hamburger (think free range avocado with tofu-infused beef, gently raised by Trappist monks) but an down to earth honest, stainless steel seared top beef between two buns so soft you'd think they were made by the guy of my pillow.com.
