Crab cakes are one of my favorite things. I've eaten them in many, many restaurants all over the world. I've bought them from the store and cooked them at home. I've even made my own from scratch with very good results. But I must say: The Walrus blew my mind. Their presentation is absolutely fantastic. The cakes are meaty, just-right-crispy and delicious and they are served perched on a bed of gorgeous greens. The greens are lightly dressed in a lovely vinaigrette and topped with perfectly roasted veggies and feta. YUM! We also ordered the artichoke and spinach dip. Delicious. AND served with plenty of yummy crostini for dipping. So many places skimp on the dippers, and it's always annoying. Not so at The Walrus. Service was prompt, friendly, attentive and efficient. If I'm ever back in Bismarck, I'll be campaigning for a return visit. Until then, I'll be dreaming about those crab cakes. read more

Ok! Here i am foolish is the middle of December going to the middle of North Dakota! Yes, I know I left balmy Minnesota for North Dakota. And yes, the weather looked good and turning fast. Well with that little story I did find a nice little gem to eat and drink in Bismarck. And yes, it is callled Walrus. I do not know the story behind Walrus but willing to listen. I had the Cajun Tetrazinni, and it was great with every bite. With the food being great it sure was nice to have the host and my server match the food excellence! Great job! Warning I will be back!!! We were seated right away with a table or booth option. Our timing was perfect for lunch. We started with amazing soups, the chicken and rice and the black bean cream salsa, which each was fantastic. Warm fresh baked DELICIOUS bread with butter was soft and filling! We then shared a Tuscany for two which was so huge, we would have been satisfied splitting a one serving size. Another find. We were vacationing in Dan's 50th state and stumbled on this amazing restaurant and two others. Absolutely great food and wonderful wait staff. Most all Food is so good. They have items that are celiac safe, too. Totally recommend the wild rice soup, tomato basil and the Tuscan salad for two. Do not recommend the GF pizza. The last time I was there the celiac safe pizza was not cooked thru. read more

Food here is good, but when I was inside, the waitress walked up to the bartender saying " I accidentally rung this up. The customer did not want it." (About a bottle of beer) so the bartender put the cap back on the beer and put it back in the fridge. I just feel like this is not allowed are you not supposed to just toss it? read more

It has been a while since the last time I was here, but they have always given me good food and good service. The restaurant isn't very big, so if you want to get in, you better make sure you get there early or make a reservation. They have an excellent wine/beer/microbrew selection. The place was super cute. We want at 6:00 on a Saturday night and got seated immediately. Our waitress was fabulous, and the food was really good. Was in Bismarck for son's away football game and found this gem!! Place was very intimate and loved the marble tables. Service was prompt & pleasant. Ordered salads & pizza. Salad was fresh & croutons superb. The pizza was to die for. To top it off they boxed the extra pizza by separating the layers with foil so it did not stick together. Nice touch. The bread is homemade with butter, oregano, garlic, and something else. We got two of the daily special soup; Cheesy sausage and dumplings. It's hard to describe except to say it was cheesy, sausage dumplings. The soup was creamy and thick. The fries were hot, slightly crispy but not overly so. They were potatoey. What exactly does that mean? Yummy! They would be perfect with any sandwich. The Patty Melt was delicious. It was also daily special. We were considering many of Jennifer's menu suggestions. Once I heard patty melt that was it! The way it was described; it sounded like a patty melt that went to college; meaning garlic, balsamic vinegar, mushrooms, and more. Lots of delicious additions. We wanted a basic patty melt and they were happy to accommodate us. The delicious, crispy, buttery toasted bun journey, was the perfect ratio to the hamburger. The cheese was good although I should have ask for cheddar, which is my preference. The onions were sautéed, I think the onions were delicious and a perfect accent. Jennifer was a fantabulous server and made our lunch a party. Her enthusiasm coupled with her menu knowledge made us want to stay all day. Thank you! Everything was delicious the chicken wrap, I added bacon and bacon was throughout, very tasty not too over sauced. Garlic fries were well covered with Parmesan and garlic delicious. Had lunch here while visiting my sister and brother-in-law in Bismarck and enjoyed the stop...good food and a good beer selection. While we found the atmosphere a little dark to our liking (low light levels made reading the menu difficult) the quality and taste of the food was great! The complimentary table bread and butter (see picture) was basic but good. For my lunch, I kept it simple and light...going for the Turkey Sandwich with Pepper Jack cheese (see picture). While the bread was basic bakery loaf style, the sandwich was fresh and tasted great! Other than bringing your own light to read the menu (if you are over the age of 50 like us), you will enjoy a stop here - great food and service. we used to come here a LOT when we lived in town. It's been redone and it's beautiful! still small with great beer and wine menu. The food is still awesome! The crab cakes are my favorite, they aren't lump crab like they used to be, but taste is great. such unique pizza too. This restaurant is clearly a labor of love - that aims for value. There is clear, deliberate design in the whole place. There are old swinging oak doors as you walk in (in a strip mall!) - either aged to look old or actually old - but they set the tone right away. The walls have wallpaper that looks like fancy wood molding - a skillful imitation that fooled my eye for over an hour. The menus are nicely printed. Even the oil and vinegar comes in a super cool bottle! Someone clearly slaved over the pleasant illusion of luxury and did a very fine job. I did not love the meat in my entree (tenderloin fettuccini) ... more like stew meat than roast or steak ... but I believe that was a matter of taste. The suggested beer pairing on the menu was spot on - I deviated from it and got something else, but my wife wife went with the suggestion and it was flawless. Who ever heard of a brown ale (Moose Drool) with pasta? Yet, it was perfect. Again, we'll chosen. The owner of the restaurant chose to be our server and she was very helpful and spent a great deal of time chatting with our children. She behaved more like a relative than a server at a restaurant on a random evening. Wonderful! The kids menu is also varied and includes a make-your-own-pizza option - the best approach I've ever seen to a kids menu. I got the house-made tiramisu for dessert and it was marvelous. And the coffee was great too!!! In retrospect, I wish I'd gotten a steak (I'm sure it would have been solid). Otherwise, I loved this place. The only thing I would improve: this is a very good beer place (there is a nice long list), but the wine selection is only OK - it's a lot of iffy inexpensive American wines. It could be much better with a little more care at the same price points, especially if some more (inexpensive) Italian or French wines were chosen to go with the menu. We ate here because of the Yelp rating. I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised by not only the food itself, but the service and ambiance. I had the ribeye steak, although I was a little nervous when they asked if I wanted a South American sauce. Steak is best served with good seasoning, in my opinion. The steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare. It was delicious. They could not have made it any better. And the garlic potatoes and veggies were also delicious. My husband had the equivalent of a French dip but wrapped in their homemade bread. He was very pleased. We had the poutine as an appetizer and were amazed at how delicious everything was. It may not look like a great restaurant on the outside. In a plain strip center, it could easily be overlooked. But this place is the real deal, and I would gladly eat there often if I lived there, to try everything they serve. read more

I haven't commented about Covid safety while dining out in a long time, I eat almost exclusively outdoors. Now that there seems to be a National spike with a new variant, let me say that the Walrus has no outdoor space and it was PACKED inside. It is clearly a popular and much loved place. We were just picking up food to go. We were greeted by a truly charming host who set us up with menus, discussed some favorite items, and was generally helpful throughout. A waitress came by and efficiently took our order and let us know it would be about 20 minutes. We walked around the bland strip mall. It may have been a bit longer than 20 minutes till our food was ready but it was worth it. We started with a spinach pizza which was good, not too exciting (in the flavor dept.) but my husband, a true pizza snob, liked it and that's saying a lot. We followed that with cheese tortellini with asparagus and mushrooms which was delicious. Caution: don't try to eat this in your car as we did, it's saucy and messy. We saved for last a roasted vegetable (not the name on the menu) salad, I had been reluctant to try to eat it in the car. It also was quite tasty and I didn't even need any of the honey mustard dressing. The prices were very reasonable on this very extensive menu, lots of vegetarian/pescatarian options. While visiting my father in the hospital in Bismarck North Dakota, I wanted to treat him to some good food, other than what the hospital offered. I ordered a takeout meal from the Walrus. As I have posted in the past, I am not particularly keen on strip mall restaurants, but this was no ordinary dive. The ambience of the restaurant is lively and comfortable with a very good vibe. Even when busy it didn't feel crowded when I was there to pick up the meal. Since I had some time before the meal was ready, I sat at the bar and was well attended to by the wait staff, who were friendly and hospitable. We had salmon, steak, and pasta, and all of the dishes were very tasty and fresh. The pricing is very reasonable for the portion size and the ingredients tasted very fresh. It was not great ambience. The pub like environment was so dark my husband couldn't read his menu. Service was cordial and helpful. They were having a raffle to benefit a family in Guatemala. Sweet idea , but I felt like the prizes were more like white elephant or Salvation Army thrift store donations. If the prizes were better you may have wanted to buy some tickets... or even make a donation...alas I don't need more junk. Grilled portobello was very tasty. Green thumb flatbread was quite good as well. Just a bit too salty and too much sauce. My daughter had the margarita chicken salad. We will not be returning. Went for lunch and got horrible service and never received our food. Server took our order timely after we arrived, but she never returned. A second server came after 25 minutes to say there was a mix up in the kitchen and she took our order again. 30 minutes later, after 2 tables who arrived after we gave our order the second time got their food, we stopped a third server to ask for a manager. She went back to the kitchen, but didn't come to tell us someone was on their way or anything. She just went back to waiting on her tables. After being there an hour, we had to leave. I'm writing this review based on our experience and we didn't even set foot in this establishment. We were in town from San Antonio TX. First off we had no knowledge of the sun going down at 9:30 pm here so we thought it was still around 6 based on the sunlight. We saw this place on yelp which said they closed at 1 am. So we thought cool we'll try this place. We Order an Uber get there at 10pm for the doors to be locked. We saw two couples outside and assuming they ate there we asked them if they knew the closing time. They said they weren't sure but that some times when it gets slow they close early I then call the restaurant and they inform me that they close the kitchen at 10 and if your already in the bar having a beer you can stay till 1 am I'm sorry but that's BS. So for our first "experience" it's a NO for me. Which sucks cause the same couple from earlier said the food is great there won't even get a chance to review that!
