We decided to try out this small brewery in the old Laughing Sun location, after visiting Laughing Sun at their current location. You can still order pizza from next door, so, that hasn't changed. There is popcorn to help yourself to & a sign for beer infused meat sticks - no other food. Staff were friendly and happy to supply samples and give a run down of the options. It quickly became clear that this is a place with lots of local regulars, (with their own mugs to prove it), & a very relaxed, friendly environment where everyone (except us) seemed to know each other. There was a small stage in the back, we left right around 6pm & there wasn't entertainment at that time. There are a few round tables that seat between 2-8 people and a standard bar top, which was apparently the place to be with standing room only remaining. We opted for a 2 seater and sampled a few brews. I went all in on the butter beer, which I regretted about halfway through. Don't get me wrong, it delivered exactly what it promised, which got to be a bit much. If you've a sweet tooth, this one is for you - very butterscotch forward, no hoppiness. My next choice was the winterweizen, which was on the money & probably where I should've started. In all, we had 4 brews & several samples at $29 All of them were balanced & hit the descriptions. This feels like a place where someone may feel inclined to hug you - by which I mean everyone seemed happy & very comfortable... almost like family without the fighting. I'd certainly recommend giving them a try, maybe even getting your own mug if you're local. (We aren't)

Small local brewery, stopped here while in town. Great beers. Tried a flight of sours and loved them. Highly recommend the Blue Bliss ale and the White Choc Raspberry!

Gideon's Brewing Company 107 N 5th St, Bismarck, ND 58501 February 6, 2021, Saturday - 12 noon for takeout beer 1 Adult Atmosphere - 5 stars Drink - 4 stars Service - 4 stars Background - Staying with my family for a bit in Minot. I have a Costco membership and they wanted to check the place out. I wanted to hit a local brewery while visiting the capitol city. The rest of the group are not a beer drinkers so it was just me for the visit. Atmosphere - I love going to small breweries. This is tiny as they come. I found out while there that they are a 15 barrel house. Even with a small brewery they provide a great variety of taps. Standard bar and with high top tables, and a bar that looks out onto the street with the closed glass garage door. Drink - I brought a growler in case they were out of crowlers. But I want to try a few and my 64 ounce growler would only provide one taste. I tried two of their beers via 16 ounce crowlers as it was a hit and run visit. Rambunctious Haze a New England India Pale Ale and then Imperial Rolo Stout. Who does not love Rolo's? That was my favorite of the two beers. They had hard seltzers on tap too, I not of a fan of these so I did not try any of them. Service - During COVID pandemic I was surprised to find the bartender not wearing a mask. He was friendly and helpful. After I got back home to Minot I wanted to try my IPA, I found and issue with that crowler. I called to see what they could do and find a solution. The solution was more than I expected, so kudos to them. Future - If I am in the Bismarck and would love to try some more of their beers.

Laughing Sun -- I guess the joke's on me…read more Went to celebrate Father's Day 2025 at Laughing Sun for some BBQ and a beer. I've been looking for good BBQ in Bismarck, and Laughing Sun has been recommended to me quite a bit. The place itself is really cool -- I love the big, open blues venue atmosphere. Axe throwing is a fun touch, and I appreciate that it's sectioned off so it doesn't distract if you're not into it. The line to order moved quickly, and ordering was smooth with friendly service. I got the 3-meat BBQ plate with brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. For sides, I chose mac and cheese, beans, and kettle chips. My wife ordered a half order of the BBQ nachos and a root beer. I had the Space Probe Blue, a sour -- which I really enjoyed. The ribs were great: served slightly above room temp, tender, and well-seasoned. I'm not a fan of competition-style ribs where you're expected to leave a bite mark, and thankfully these were more tender than that. Not quite "fall-off-the-bone," but a really nice middle ground. The pulled pork was solid -- moist, well-seasoned, and with noticeable smoke flavor. The brisket looked promising with a nice bark and smoke ring. But that's where the positives ended. It was the driest brisket I've ever had -- barely edible. Truly terrible. It looked old, and I'd be shocked if it hadn't been sliced the day before. I was genuinely disappointed. Brisket and burnt ends are my jam, and I just couldn't vibe with it. The "award-winning" mac and cheese was served at room temp and was mid at best. The beans were also served room temp and are supposed to include brisket -- fortunately, mine did not. I'd give the beans a 5/10. The kettle chips, though, were excellent -- crispy, well-seasoned, and easily the best side of the bunch. The BBQ nachos didn't go over well with my wife. Her main issues: the pulled pork was wet and spongy, the pico de gallo was overly watery and made everything soggy, and the use of melted cheese instead of nacho cheese didn't work. In summary: If you're after a great local beer and a fun atmosphere, this could be your spot. But if you're looking for killer BBQ executed with care, maybe do what I'm going to do -- and keep looking.

I've even made my own from scratch with very good results. But I must say: The Walrus blew my mind. Their presentation is absolutely fantastic. The cakes are meaty, just-right-crispy and delicious and they are served perched on a bed of gorgeous greens. The greens are lightly dressed in a lovely vinaigrette and topped with perfectly roasted veggies and feta. YUM! We also ordered the artichoke and spinach dip. Delicious. AND served with plenty of yummy crostini for dipping. So many places skimp on the dippers, and it's always annoying. Not so at The Walrus. Service was prompt, friendly, attentive and efficient. If I'm ever back in Bismarck, I'll be campaigning for a return visit. Until then, I'll be dreaming about those crab cakes.
