Our server was a little under attentive for my preference but got us drinks and food. We both ordered a hot alcoholic drink for the cold dark night. They were ok but I was not wowed by either. I got a black and blue burger w sweet potato fries and my wife had a house salad. I ate mine and tried hers but neither was super bad or super good. Was just meh. Nice eatery with a brewery tap room up in the loft. Very wide selection of beers including beer from Bismarck brewing which has a tap room upstairs. Lots of hand picked food items that all seemed to fit the style of the place. Beautiful inside with like an old rustic lodge meets modern dining kind of look. Service was quick and people were all nice! They also have dog water bowls so you can bring your dog and eat outside if you want. Definitely a good place to grab some beers and a bite to eat with a group of people and then go up to the loft to try more beers after you eat. read more

They welcome well behaved dogs on the patio. That made us come here, very few places in Bismarck, ND allow this. Combined with good food and good beer, that made this a relaxing experience after a tough day for my spouse. We shared their reuben egg rolls, which were really tasty. We then ordered (to share) a philly cheese steak sandwich and a beef/stout pot pie. Oh, and beer. WAY too much food, but leftovers work. The beef pot pie was ginormous. Redemption in the form of pot pie. This glorious creation is now chicken, instead of beef. I fought myself over going to a 4 star rating because that beef pot pie was heaven in a dish. Alas, the chicken version, despite my bitterness, was almost as good. I'm hoping that we get beef for fall & winter, then chicken for spring & summer. We ate upstairs since we came in knowing what we were getting and that it was on the limited bsr menu. 2 out of 3 of us had never been in before. The barkeep walked the other 2 through beer options &, I never heard a single complaint over the moaning. We split dessert because - why not. Complaints: 0 - great info from the barkeep. I don't expect stellar tsble service upstairs, since you opt out of the restaurant & into the pub. Nonetheless, service was pretty good. I don't know how nice I'd be climbing this stairs for cheaper options and lower tips! $16 pot pie has a MASSIVE tender-fluffy puff-pastry crust baked over a rich, thick, well-developed, well-balanced savory chicken, pea and carrot sauce... the only thing better is beef! Followed up with an $8, whipped cream covered, vanilla icecream & brownie sundae - the brownie is the money maker here... hints of cinnamon and possibly chile? It was a nie sweet treat. I had the $5 pint of liquid lunch on nitro to wash it down. A near perfect pairing - the only thing that would make it better is the beef version! Welcome back to the top! During our visit to Bismarck this was maybe our favorite place. We visited for lunch on a Thursday. It wasn't super busy. The atmosphere is really nice and upscale for the area but very comfortable. The food was excellent. I have Celiac Disease so gluten free options are always appreciated. I had the AW Cheeseburger with a GF bun and a salad. The GF bun was THE BEST I have ever had. It was soft, fresh and delicious. In most restaurants, GF bun are so chewy or hard they are inedible. The greens on the salad were amazingly fresh. My husband got the Meatloaf Sandwich. It was delicious. We shared a side of fries and I'm so glad we ordered them because they were amazing!! Aaron was our server and I can't say enough good things about the service provided by this young man. It only added to a fantastic dining experience. read more

After a round of beers upstairs, we came back downstairs for the full menu. Great service from Ciera at the bar. She was attentive, polite and helpful. I got a flight of four beers and the bratwurst to start. The stone ground mustard with it was excellent and the brat was a great beginning for the meal. Main course, the salmon. It actually tasted like salmon and they did substitute Brussels sprouts for the potatoes, which was very nice. My colleague got the schnitzel and wow. Huge portion served with red cabbage and spätzle. It looked amazing and I was a little jealous, but it's completely not on my keto diet. We both had stellar meals and it was thoroughly enjoyed. Out on the edge of the northern sprawl of Bismarck sits Ale Works. Not usually my side of town as there's no Hilton properties up that way ...yet. But I learned a new back road route to get there from the client I took out. The place is a brewery and gastro pub combo. Really gorgeous new building with HIGH vaulted ceilings and rustic log cabin feel. It was dry January for me, so I didn't partake in any of the home brews. I did however share the bratwurst starter and it was a lot of delicious food. There are 3 whole bratwurst sausages from a local butcher. They're accompanied by six crostini, cheese slices, and dipping sauces. Highly recommend. For a main I had the schnitzel. The sauce on top was a delicious butter mornay with capers. The spaetzel were hard and dry. That's the loss of one star. Everything else was on point. read more

This review is for all the special needs children out there. If you have a child who has any kind of disability, I would NOT RECOMMEND supporting this restaurant. A friend of mine had a mini reunion early evening. No one was even in the restaurant. We were one of the first along with her beautiful child who so happens to be autistic! We were seated immediately! And the only positive experience we had was our waitress Kayla! She was completely understanding and even related to my friend. They struck up a conversation and she too has a son who is autistic. Mind you my friend knows her son very well and provided all options available for him "to behave". If this were any other child, including a baby, that usually always makes some kind of mess , none of what we experienced next would have occurred. Other people, along with families started trickling in to the restaurant. However Ale works, was still not completely busy. everyone who sat around us kept staring at our table. And they soon begin to complain because they assumed my friend could not control her son. He was hanging out on the couch, and had his shoes and socks off! Mind you no one else came up to us to tell us "customers" there were complaining about a 5 year old. Soon after we ate, the manager Nealy! came over-she came over abruptly and very rude. I asked her what she was doing. And I overheard her saying just cleaning up the mess. Mind you there was no mess, and it was my sons coat and shoes nicely put on the chair. She then began to tell him he needed to put his shoes on. And I was so shocked, I had to let her know she is not this mothers child. This was the worst restaurant experience ever! They wanted us out, and you could tell they did not know how to handle our table. As a manger she showed no professionalism and did not let us know we were disturbing others. And as we left, even the hostesses were rude and said something as we were leaving! I will not go back and support this restaurant! Please educate your staff when it comes to circumstances like this. Some of the seating is actually church pews, adding variety of decor. Grab a beer sampler (4, 4oz pours). They have a fairly decent variety of both in-house brews, local, and national. The food was solid. Stick-to-your-gut meals filled with potatoes, sausages (which we got as an appetizer, natural casing with a nice snap), and beer. The highlight of the meal was the porter braised beef pot pie. It came with an enormous puff pastry topping the steaming bowl. Its certainly a sizable meal, full of flavor. Possibly the best meal I've ever eaten and the meal I'd pick as my "last meal". Soooo good!!! I can only post on my first of many meals I will be having. I got a crazy cheap PRIME RIB! french dip and picked the house salad. Teenie tiny understandable issue because as take-away the salad got forgotten but they were so great because they keep hot and cold food separate to keep the quality of the food as best it can be. Duh no one wants a hot salad. What they did for the tiny issue was beyond great. Even with gas prices high the salad was worth the drive back to get because it is hand cut fresh veggies. But the main was to die for! The once again super cheap ($20 total) prime rib french dip and side was insanely good! It melted like butter. Third is you like high quality food they got you covered! Basically GO CHECK THIS PLACE OUT! From appetizers to main dishes they will fill your stomach and fill it with good food! It took a little while to make it here for the dine-in date to take place. We tried to visit for our anniversary but the restaurant ended up to be closed that day of the week, not their fault, The experience once we made it was overall really good. Watch out for the front doors when entering, they are awkward and it ran over my sandaled toes and cut me so I spent the first few minutes with napkins to stop the bleeding ( my fault I think) but the entrance doors are different than most so ladies be careful. Once seated everything was great from the service to the food. Our waiter was on top of it. I had the prime rib dip and it was really good. My husband's food was great also. Now keep in mind on the drinks I just had a bottle of wine so I cannot really comment on mixed cocktails. My husband doesn't really drink so he just had a soda. They are really frozen fries with a hint of truffle oil and dried parmesan. Had the fish and chips. The fish was horrible over cooked and the tarter sauce was minus any relish. I stopped by here this past Saturday with my wife and her parents for lunch. We chose the Aleworks because we were looking for a brewery that serves food and while the Aleworks isn't a brewery, Bismarck Brewing is upstairs. What is cool about these two restaurants sharing a building is that you can go upstairs and bring the beer back to your table or you can order from an abbreviated food menu in the brewery. In any case the building that they choose is beautiful. It is massive and quite open with exposed ductwork and a wooden roof. Hanging from the rafters are stained glass windows which are a nice addition. There is a large bar off to the left which has 30 beers on tap. Finally in addition to the indoor seating where we were, the Aleworks has outdoor seating. For lunch on this day my wife and I decided to split the beer battered cheese curds. Then for my lunch entree I went with the jager schnitzel. The menu described it as Pork Cutlet, Caper Mustard Sauce, Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage and Spaetzle. Our beer battered cheese curds came out first with a side of creole aioli. They were like little pockets of goodness with a nice and crispy exterior and a soft and tasty interior. The creole aioli helped break up the richness of the dish and was flavorful itself. While I wouldn't have been able to tell you that they were beer battered, the batter was nice. After we had finished with our appetizer our entrees came out. My pork cutlet had a nice exterior to it and I loved it with the caper mustard sauce. I just wish that there had been more mustard sauce and that the pork cutlet wouldn't have been cooked as long as it was super tough. After finishing with that I moved onto the sweet and sour cabbage. In most places that I have had it there is a ton of liquid underneath it which wasn't the case here. As a matter of a fact i would call this version "dry" but it still tasted good and I loved the sweet and sour flavor of it. Last but certainly not least was the spaetzle. Now I had to admit that I generally find spaetzle pretty boring and add a ton of pepper to it. The Ale Works was the same although I think it was probably a good example of it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While some of my food could have been cooked better, I did still enjoy my meal. read more

Stopped in on a recommendation from a friend with my husband. We were on our way to the airport in Bismarck so it was convenient to stop right of the highway for a quick bite. First of all -- the service was outstanding. We had a server (hate to say it but i forgot her name) and she was delightful. She had great beers to recommend and told us her favorite foods. She stopped by every five minutes to check on us and was just an, overall, awesome server. She travels often with her husband and decided to pick up a short term gig at Ale Works. The food was wonderful. I got a house salad and the soup which was a sausage-type chowder. SO good with a little spice but creamy. My husband got the Reuben special recommended by the waitress and it was awesome. It was made with pastrami rather than corned beef and was not too harsh of a horseradish taste. Lastly, the decor in this establishment was super impressive. The picture over the fireplace was strange but all the other prohibition art coupled with the industrial beams and iron made this place feel super hip. I was excited to try the restaurant, since I'm a big fan of Bismarck Brewing upstairs, and the restaurant decor is fabulous. Sadly, the food at Ale Works doesn't quite match the excellence of the beers and the decor. I had the pork cutlet (which was nice because I don't do veal) with spaetzle and a sweet/sour pickled red cabbage which was delicious (and I don't even like cabbage). Unfortunately the pork was pretty dry and didn't have much of the "sauce" to remedy that. RL had the fish and chips which was certainly more moist than my schnitzel, but it wasn't anything really fabulous. There are lots of other places to go in Bismarck for okay German food that are less pricey than Ale Works. Not that it was bad. It was okay. But after the beer upstairs I was hoping for more than okay. read more

First, I will start with the staff, management and ownership. They are all fantastic. Everyone that I have met is focused on customer service and quality. Now for the food. Ale Works recently began a Sunday brunch. The food was delicious with many options including gluten free and vegan options. I went on the first day they launched their Sunday brunch and even on that day everything was perfectly prepared, delicious, and accompanied with excellent service. On this occasion I ordered the Prime Rib Hash which I highly recommend! Most recently I went on a Saturday night - typically the busiest time for any restaurant. I was warmly greeted, seated quickly, and the waitress quickly greeted me and through out the entire time checked in regularly at just the right intervals as to make sure all was well, but not to intrude unnecessarily. On this occasion I ordered the Chicken Marsala. It was perfectly prepared and pleasantly presented. The sauce (made in-house) was able to be made with out the wild mushrooms (I don't care for mushrooms) and was slightly unique to the point that I soaked up every bit with the bread! Again, gluten free and vegan options are available. I highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner whether you are a large party, out for date night, or on your own looking for something good to eat. All are made to feel comfortable and welcome. The atmosphere is modern-comfortable, with some unique antique decorations, and tributes to the days of U.S. Speakeasys. And don't miss the very large fireplace in the winter, and the large outdoor patio during warmer weather. Please note that they are closed on Mondays. read more

We loved the atmosphere here and sat upstairs. Our server was great! The side house salad was fresh and tasted good. The ranch dressing did not taste home made however; it tasted like Hidden Valley ranch unfortunately. I had the chicken pot pie. The flavor and portion size were amazing. The only suggestion I would have is to add crust to the bottom and sides. I think that if you're a carnivore who loves German food you're totally in luck! But if you're the herbivore spouse of a carnivore you will be out of luck. So I'm writing this review for vegetarians from a vegetarian perspective :) (Yes we exist in ND.) The Good: it's beautiful! What a neat interior. And a lot of drink options. The service was great and fast. The pretzel appetizer was ok, and the dipping sauce was amazing! Definitely get that. The fries were great too. The other vegetarian with me (who got the fries and salad) really did love her salad - I believe it was an autumn type one. The Bad: This place has very little for you. In this day in age there should be more options than just salad, fries and a few sides. But I was hoping the sides would be good. As I said above, some things were ok. But I also got the brussels sprouts and spaetzle. The brussels sprouts somehow managed to taste burnt while being totally undercooked - also very garlicky. The spaetzle was overcooked - way too soft, almost mushy. And it was terribly bland. Two stars may seem harsh, but Yelp classifies two stars as "meh, I've had better." And I have. There is amazing food in the Bismarck area - and many vegetarian friendly places! This just isn't one of them. But like I said, that's just from a vegetarian perspective. This place is great! They brew their own beer right on premises, they've got a good selection of beers from other breweries, a large German themed menu, and they're family friendly. I don't think any of the other breweries in town allow kids, and few of the other restaurants as upscale as this have as good of a beer selection. I've enjoyed beers from Bismarck Brewing at several other locations, and my beer was tasty as expected. Many items on the menu were appealing - I ordered a pastrami sandwich they had on special, which was excellent! I'd order it again for sure. I will say the food is a bit pricier than what I'm used to paying at similar restaurants in Bismarck, but nothing ridiculous. Service was fantastic! Horrible service! The two "beer masters" that were behind the counter up top didn't want us there! The taller one gave us dirty looks like we should not be up there. You cannot order food from them so major inconvenience to walk downstairs, order food, then go back up stairs if you want to sit up there. We never got checked on once, I had to ask for drinks. The sandwich was good, brisket, but the fries were WAY over seasoned with some house seasoning they used, even ketchup couldn't cover it up. The beers were good. Lots of other places to eat and drink that actually want business...it was a Saturday at about 12:30 and it was pretty dead, now I know why! read more
