Staff were great when we went in, celebrating even our steal of a deal finds with us. The theme, while adorable, didn't make up for the shortage of unique inventory. Aside from the close-out items, we weren't able to locate any selections that were not readily available everywhere else. As such, it falls in the average range. It looks like we'll need to cross the state line to get something new to try. Game on!

One of the downsides to an extended stay in Minnesota is the need to plan liquor store visits: you…read morecan't buy beer or wine elsewhere, and you can't buy it on Sundays. An even bigger downside is when the liquor store's best beer on offer is New Belgium Ranger IPA. Not that there's anything wrong with the Ranger. But that doesn't leave much thrill for the hunt.... So while we survived a steady diet of the Ranger and various low-end, mass-produced California wines (I mean, you can drink almost anything if you're lounging in the sun and have a lake to jump into, right?!), my man and I still needed nightly fortification for our drive back and our nights in hotels. Pulling into Bismarck after two weeks of scarcity, I was thrilled to find Captain Jack's and their relative plethora of selection. Many of my favorite familiar microbreweries (along with lesser-known, more local Midwestern ones) were represented, from six-packs to cases to liters to a wall-full of single bottles. My four-pack of Flying Dog Double Dog Imperial IPA was an excellent choice, and although being without a wine key limited me to screwcaps, nevertheless snagged that old standby, Big House Red. If I ever make the drive again, I'm remembering that Captain Jack's is the place to stop, and stock up!

We ordered 3 different pizzas on gluten free crusts and paid for extra cheese on 2 of them. Not sure there was any cheese. Barely any ingredients. Some slices had nothing! Crust was like cardboard. Pizza wasn't even cut! One of the photos is from after we cut the pizzas. What a disappointment for what we spent!

We were greeted right away as there was no one else in the restaurant. Its an open floor plan with two rooms. Im guessing its quite lively in the evenings. We shared the chopped salad and the Daisy pizza. The salad was good, though not a traditional chopped salad--it used that trendy wild greens mix that so many restaurants are leaning on these days. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but the menu did specify it, so that one's on me for not paying closer attention. The pizza, however, was absolutely terrific. The crust was soft and chewy with just the right amount of char from the stone oven. The combination of the sauce, cheese, and fresh basil was spot on. They also drizzle a flavored oil over the top--we couldn't quite pinpoint what it was, but it added an extra layer of flavor that really elevated the pizza. We devoured the whole thing--three slices each! At around $20, the pizza might feel a bit pricey, but it's clear that everything is fresh and made from scratch, so it's well worth it. Service was attentive, though we were the only ones there at lunchtime. I imagine this place really comes alive in the evening. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu--and next time, I'm not sharing my pizza.
