What a wonderful stop upon arriving in Bismarck! We arrived about 30 min before closing time and they still got us seated, served, and out the door with a carmel roll to-go by close. Super quaint, a staple if you are visiting. All of the food was good and I'm convinced everything on the menu is probably just as good. Being from the south, I doubted finding any proper country diners, but boy was I mistaken. Everything was warm and so comforting in the dishes we ordered. This was the best way to end our time in Bismarck! Service was extremely fast and friendly and the food was incredible. My husband and I both ordered breakfast but we had to split a bowl of the knoephla soup as well just because of the rave reviews about it and we were not disappointed. Beware of the kneophla soup! I purchased 1/2 gallon near closing time warm right from the kitchen. I suffered the runs for two days. I am certain it was the soup because of the symptoms and sequence of events. I have 20 years of experience and training inspecting food manufacturing and food services. My request to speak to the manager resulted in speaking privately with the daughter of the owner. She became obstinate and literally waved me off and walked away. I'm probably being a lot harsher than I should be about Frieds. We were trying to capture 'North Dakota' delicacies while in North Dakota, and going to Fried's... we did. Some notes on the positive side, our server was wonderful. She was helpful, a subject matter expert on the menu, and was very attentive. Our order came out correctly and in a very timely fashion. Portions are extremely generous here. We took one of the caramel rolls to go and had it the next morning for breakfast. It's enormous, delicious, and a crowd pleaser in my family. The hostess behind the counter that sat us and then cashed us out at the end was flat out rude. Not a good impression at all compared to the service we received otherwise at this restaurant and unfortunately, this was our first impression of the restaurant and tainted our experience. They could also do some work to make the seating a bit more comfortable. We were at a table by the window which we liked, but I enjoyed standing up at the end. The food was just okay. I have German heritage and travel to German speaking countries fairly frequently. Many of the dishes have a German flare, but just aren't as good as traditional German food. I probably wouldn't come again if I'm ever in this area again, but am glad I had the experience. If you are a culture vulture, I do suggest coming here. read more

I did a yelp search for a breakfast spot in or near Bismarck and this little spot popped up. It was a little out of my way but was well worth it. When I first pulled up I was confused. I wasn't sure if it was a restaurant or a pawn store. It was different a kinda poorly identified. The food and staff were great through. The inside was clean and the atmosphere was relaxed. I decided to get the sausage biscuit special. It came with gravy over the top, eggs your way and hash browns. It was great and well priced. Being a North Dakota native, I always struggled with an answer when someone has asked me "where would I find good German food in North Dakota?" Well, I think I have now found my answer. German food is highly diverse, like most ethnic food, and I love experiencing the different flair that different German cultures throw in their food. Most excitedly, I was ecstatic to find that this restaurant had schupfnudeln (called "shoop noodles") on their menu. Alas, I didn't come on the right day to try them, but I do want to say that schupfnudeln was the number one treat from my childhood. I'll have to make it back on a Tuesday sometime. I ended up ordering some French toast, as we were there for breakfast. I know, I know. French food in a German restaurant? Oh, the blasphemy. But it was delicious, and so was the meat that accompanied it. Our entire group was pleased with the meal. This will be a regular stop for me whenever I'm in Bismarck. The staff was also outstanding. We stopped to have breakfast before heading back for Florida. This is a pawn shop, gift shop, restaurant, made us a bit leery. We were greeted by the friendly staff and realize this is a true local spot. We had intentions of breakfast but wanted the local food so had fleischkuechle with Knoephla Soup of which I could not pronounce either one but the waitress was kind and helped me. We also had the Truckers hash. The soup is a creamy dumpling soup and homemade and very good. The fleischkuechle is kinda like chicken fried steak in a bread. Very interesting and filling. I went to Frieds solely on the number of caramel roll reviews I read here on Yelp. I was not disappointed. Very light and fluffy roll compared to the heavy, dense roll I was expecting based on my experiences at so many other restaurants. Even though the caramel roll is huge, it was manageable and didn't leave me feeling weighed down or sick to my stomach. If I could describe it in two words they'd be: simple, delicious. I followed it up with one of the specials off the board, Boston Creme French Toast. The French Toast was perfectly cooked. An al dente crust on the outside and almost like a bread pudding on the inside. With the filling, chocolate syrup, and whipped topping (not whipped cream, whipped topping) it was like having dessert for breakfast. It came with eggs and a choice of meat; I, of course, chose the bacon. The eggs were average, the bacon was a little above average, crisp, but not brittle. When you drive up to Frieds, it looks like a place where you should expect to get decent comfort food. That's what I go, and I think you would, too. read more

This is one of the strangest restaurants I have ever been in. A box on a hill, overlooking the highway, the supposedly-German family restaurant has prints of French cafes and Italian bakeries on the walls, painted one nasty color of green on the one side and one strange color of red on the other with '70s retro booths and chairs upholstered in swirling grey in between. Then there is the gift shop featuring the most bizarre collection of Bowie knives, baseball cards, collectible coins, snap-back caps, and power tools. And etc. But you didn't come here for the decor nor the gifts, did you? Eat. Food. Order the German food. Order the steak. Order the cauliflower, it is delicious! The pies looked a little tired. So we skipped dessert. But when we saw the towering parfait glasses at the next table, we wished that we had ordered root beer floats or parfaits! We ate hearty and spent $25 on a dinner for two. Everything I ordered was delicious. All my coworkers recommended this place when I moved here... Now I know why! Knoephla soup is super creamy; noodles fresh and cooked to point. German burger is juicy and flavorful- with just the right amount of sauerkraut. The chips are made fresh in house... Oh soo good. Giant slice of pumpkin pie to end the meal.
