Outstanding burgers, lots of options and great hand cut fries. Cooked to temperature and great customer service!

I stopped by for lunch with a friend, and we got seated right away at the bar. I ordered the Humpty Dumpty burger with bacon and chips. All the potatoes are sliced up fresh, and the burgers are cooked perfectly. I only wish the egg on the burger had a runny yolk, but on the upside the burger wasn't messy. They've got a great beer list too. I had a peanut butter porter which sounded strange but tastes amazing. The service was great too. read more

This is a delightful place to eat. The patio is pleasantly urban. The burgers are quite good and very reasonable. The fries are great as well but add an extra $3. Great servers and exceptionally fast food prep. I don't drink, I come here for the food and the lovely patio. read more

One of my favorites! It's actually embarrassing how frequently I go here. The food is fantastic - phenomenal burgers, wonderful homemade seasoned chips and fries - and relatively affordable in my opinion. You can also get food to go which is super convenient. (my favorite meal ready in 10 minutes for just $10!!!) And of course they have an awesome beer selection! This is my go-to place in Bismarck to try fun and unique brews from local and regional breweries. The selection is always evolving so you can always try something new. And you can get a growler to go! Some of the beers can get pricey but there are always affordable options too. Aside from awesome food and beer, the staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. I've been spending a lot of time at their cozy outdoor patio lately - highly recommended! read more

I love the food here !! I even really enjoyed some of the service from a tall slim guy with long orange hair. He was amazing. And then he left and I was left with a girl with short hair pulled back in two tiny buns. Immediately me and my mom sensEd weird energy from her. She made me wait forever to ask for a box. She kept serving all the men at the bar rail but not me and my mom. Finally she comes to the old couple next to us speaks to them nicely and then proceeds to change her tone when speaking to my mother and me. I had a Togo box. I left at 2:24 I callled at 2;27 to see if I could come back for it and she was happy to tell me it was gone and thrown away. She did not say sorry. I wanted a third beer but we left because she was so rude. She was going around to the outside of the bar rail hanging on other guys once her coworker left Sad Because I wanted another delicious third beer but she made me and my mom feel to leave . I could eat here every day Thank the Lord I found a place with great burgers!!!! Fully customizable and they have a decent selections of options. The only downside is that they have AMAZING FRESH chips and fries, that are a la cart. So you don't get a burger and fries/chips, you get a burger and spend some more on the side. I will say, the sides are totally worth the money. You're going to spend at least $10 on lunch for a burger, chips/fries, dip.... then your drink. So come ready to pay $20/person and be happy to get out for less. Chips are freshly made right in front of your eyes (if you're at the bar) and come out -almost- crispy, not quite though. If you want it done fully crisp like a bag of chips you just need to ask, and they are more than happy to let them dry out a little longer. The dips are equally amazing. love the combinations on the seasons and dips. They have a wonderful selection on tap, I've only had three of them but looking forward to trying the rest. Oh and the 1919 root beer is really yummy. Tastes great. I think it's great that they are offering and supporting the local breweries and putting those out for people to get attached to. This place is strictly a bar, that also serves food. They are not a bar and grill or bar and restaurant like they seem to be. This place is not family friendly and they need to make that more clear. J L Beers will not serve you if you have a one year old along with. They obviously don't want our hard earned money. They turned us away and didn't explain why. We were traveling and looking for a good place to eat. We couldn't find a babysitter since we were hundreds of miles from home. We went to Sickies Garage, which was a friendly place with good food instead. I had to search a bit through the state's code of law to find this: "2. An individual under twenty-one years of age may not enter any licensed premises where alcoholic beverages are being sold or displayed, except: a. A restaurant if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian;" (5-01-08) Even if we had looked for this law, (and it's difficult to look for something that you don't know exists), we still would've assumed that it's a restaurant because their tagline is, "Great Burgers Served Here". There's nothing in their name or tagline that even alludes to a bar except for the fact that they sell beer. read more

The tap beers are the main pull here. 39 on tap and counting... And then there are bottles. They even do beer flights. The beer is mainly from small boutique domestic breweries in the upper Mid-west, plus a few mega-boutique breweries from the West and NE and a few overseas beers (Europe and UK mainly) but still a wide selection, particularly for Bismarck. There is food, mainly burgers and fries. It's mediocre at best and the service is quick. But again the beer is the main draw, so I'm not sure food quality should matter. The service is hit or miss and will likely get better as time goes on. The wait for a seat can get rather long, and there are a lot of downtowners who come here for late lunch and early dinner. For example, I went at 2 pm on a Tuesday and there was a 15 minute wait for a single seat at the bar. I suspect as the newness of the place as something to do with the relatively long wait times and it will likely settle down as it gets established. So why only 3 stars? You hope that when a restaurant chooses to focus on one thing, in this case burgers and beer, that they do it well. At JL Beers, that's exactly what you'll get--burgers that have been perfected, seasoned well, cooked to temperature, and with creative, flavor enhancing toppings that are proportionate to the rest of the sandwich. Not to mention, the fries and chips are fantastic and made in house. I'll repeat, they were not delivered frozen in a bag. You'll pay a little more for this, but your tastebuds will thank you. Beer! A nice selection of really fantastic beers on tap will leave you satisfied and glad you came. Indeed, what's better than pairing a great burger with a great beer? The place is smaller on the inside, but it's nice, clean, and well-organized. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the music is good, too. So, if you're not much of a drinker, you can skip this place. The burger was good, but not better than, say, Five Guys or even Reza's. The fries were good, but the beer cheese sauce was a little too beery. With a page or two of food choices and a zillion pages of beer choices, this place is skewed towards those who like a cold brew. The service was annoying though the food was served quickly. The tables were small, crowded, and marginally uncomfortable. I had the jalapeño popper burger, with garlic fries and their amber ale. The burger was fantastic ( I think it's the best in Bismarck) the fries were addictive and the staff was extremely nice and very responsive. I wish I had been here sooner, definitely coming back. read more

Always great service. They pool tips so you probably won't have the same server the whole time. The food is wonderful. Best part is you get to watch them use fresh ingredients as they make your food. Such a great place to grab lunch and a beer or just grab a drink. An awesome selection of draft beers it's incredible hard to make a choice. The restaurant is very well laid out and has a cozy yet welcoming vibe to it. I have been here a hand full of times since moving here and the staff is always friendly and is happy to give suggestions and personal favorites. They will let you sample anything on tap before you order so don't hesitate ask them. I do like the fact they rinse out the glass with cold water before they poor the beer. The food here is amazing, always consistent. My favorite burger is the Humpty Dumpty burger, it's this perfectly seasoned burger with a fried egg and cheese I add bacon to mine. Such a awesome combo. I like the fact they fresh cut the chips or fries to order and can have them seasoned in different ways. Add a side of beer cheese with them, you won't be disappointed. It's the perfect tang with the salt from the chips. Skip the short beer and grab a tall, sit back and relax. Maybe have two. Staff always makes you feel like family. What are you looking for? A quick lunch, a burger and a cold one after work, or beers with the fellas (or whatever women call their drinking buddies)? JL Beers is great for any of these. While this review is for the Bismarck JL Beers, the experience is consistent at every location I've visited. My go-to is the JL Burger with bacon, but you really can't go wrong with any menu option. You can pick from about half a dozen seasonings for the fries and bunch of dips. Although not listed on the menu, "original" fries are available. These are thinner than the hand-cut fries, which is great if you're like me and don't like al dente fries. If, for some unfathomable reason, the name didn't give it away, beer is the beverage of choice. Cans of soda, bottled water and draft root beer are available, but that's pretty much it. The tap list changes frequently and the stock of bottles/cans is extensive. The staff is generally knowledgeable on the beer options and always willing to provide information or advice. As is the case with every JL Beers, this location is small and often busy. If you walk in and see a line of five or 10 people waiting for a table, don't immediately walk out. Service is quick and most people are in and out in a short time. The wait is usually less than most restaurants. Street parking can be tough to find, but there is a ramp down the block and only costs a few bucks. I'm not going to tell you it will be the best burger you've ever had and you will forsake all other burger joints for all eternity. I will tell you, if you like burgers and/or beer, give it a try. I ordered the namesake burger and a beer, and it was a great burger. But what stood out for me was the service. I was waited on quickly and the server helped me out by going through and pairing my meal with a good beer. I was horrified to realize that I was two dollars short...I told my server and it was like no big deal. It could have been an awkward situation but it was like nothing. I went home grabbed the funds and a tip and returned to make it right. So overall I would say great food great service cool atmosphere and staffed by actual human beings. read more

I come here way more often than I should, and my experience is consistently stellar!! The friendly staff are always efficient and accurate, no matter how busy it is inside. And the peaceful patio with freshly growing hops is their hidden gem now that it's that time of year! Stopped by initially because of the reviews here on yelp. I was disappointed that there was no Amber on tap however the bartender suggested Hofbrau Martzen which was amazing! I love everything about my recent visit to JL Beers except the French fries I got as a side with my burger. I don't know why but they just tasted so off. I did enjoy dinning in their back patio/courtyard area. It was a hot and sunny day, but because it was wedged between older brick buildings, it allowed us to enjoy the beautiful day without the sun directly hitting us. The beer options were pretty ample and the food we had was tasty as well (aside from the French fries). Additionally, the servers and bartenders were excellent! Everyone made sure I say hello to us as we walked in, and even the guys in the back told us to have a great day as we left. Despite not being a fan of the fries, I would gladly return to JL Beers. read more

Awesome place to hang out with friends and even better for burgers. Staff is super friendly and nice. Just a couple random facts about this place, they give you free postcards to write while you are waiting for your food. Afterwards, they pay for the stamp and send it out for you. Also, they sell alcohol quote shirts for 16 dollars. Bit pricey in my opinion. Ok now about the food, they have a decent selection of burgers here. I got the Mt. Mushmore along with seasalt fries and savored every bite of it. My friend enjoyed the Humpty Dumpty burger and cajun chips. After trying some of his chips, I wish I ordered the chips too. Don't get me wrong, their fries are awesome! It's just the chips were even better =). Another thing, they have sriracha here! First place I have seen in Bismarck that has sriracha. Given the combination of good customer service, delicious burgers and free postcards, I will definitely be coming back here again soon. read more
