I have had A LOT of bad curly haircuts over the past couple of years, so much so that I basically resorted to cutting my own very curly hair. Discovered Emily after complimenting a friend on her curly locks and immediately made an appointment. I admitted that I'm trying to grow my hair out so instead of taking off 3-4" (it's happened), she removed the bare minimum, adding volume and manageability. Jane gives perfect haircuts that look cute for a long time without having to do a ton of maintenance. I have sort of straight/wavy-ish hair with a lot of personality, but I don't have the patience to pay attention to it on a daily basis. Jane works with the hair you got and brings out the best in it so that it looks good even if you're throwing it back into a ponytail (great bangs and wisps to frame your face). I was totally blown away by Dez. I have always had fine, frizzy hair and was always so frustrated with it that I basically lived in ponytails or buns. Dez was so helpful and very easily was able to give me a nice cut with minimal styling effort that showed I actually had nice curls underneath all the frizz! I just got home from my first haircut at Coven... in fact the first haircut I haven't given myself in 20 years. The reason I stayed away so long was because of the horrible experiences I'd had before with stylists telling me that they "know how to cut curly hair." I went to Jenny for years and followed her to Coven when she opened it with her partners. It is the most comfortable place to get your hair done. In summer there is a back patio to relax in while your color soaks in. I only go to Jenny but even if she moved out of state (God forbid), I would go find someone else there because they all are so nice and the place is welcoming. read more

I cannot say enough about Alexis and Coven! I started seeing Ms. Alexis at Vain about five years ago and had to follow her when she made the big move. I have curly hair and have had some pretty horrible haircuts, but Alexis gets it just right every time. I am totally comfortable in her hands, so I just get to sit back and enjoy catching up. (I should also note that even though I have never personally gone to Jenny or Emily, I have seen their work and they are also incredibly talented. I would feel comfortable going to any one of them.) I'm compelled to write a review now because Alexis just did hair for myself and my bridesmaids for my wedding. Prior to the wedding I was worried about my grays showing, and she thankfully talked me out of doing something drastic like highlights or a full color. We did a glaze, which covered the grays but kept me looking like "me". I feel like most stylists would not have been that thoughtful. On the day of the wedding, she was on time and ready to go (even though I was running late). While I was finishing up, she fixed my fiance's terrible haircut he had gotten a week prior so that he wouldn't look horrible in our wedding photos. It was such a relief! She hung out with us all day as we got ready, and I kind of forgot she wasn't part of the official wedding party. The girls were so happy with their updos/blow outs, and don't even get me started on my wedding hair. I have seriously never looked that good. Ever. In my life. We worked off a couple pictures I found online, but what she produced was 10x greater than anything I could have expected. Not only was it absolutely beautiful and exactly what I wanted, but it held up ALL FREAKING NIGHT. Sweat, dancing, people hugging me - nothing loosened those bobby pins until I wanted them out. I researched the salon and each stylist. The first person's bio is up on the website, however you cannot book them at all. The link states "not taking clients at this time". The calendar wouldn't even allow you to book them. I then chose another stylist, DEZ. I live in Eastern Washington, and made my appointment on 4/6/22.The appointment was scheduled for 5/20. I get a text, not even a call. to tell me..My appointment has been cancelled as DEZ is going to be out on personal leave until June 29th. They offered to reschedule me after June 29th, or "put me with another stylist". I then asked for a specific stylist, Alexis. I was told "she is booke but we can put you on a waiting list."..No, thank you! a waiting list. when I had a scheduled appointment?. I then get a lengthy text from DEZ (the stylist) apologizing and stating that she did not want to dissapoint her clients. She offered to refer me to another stylist who would "be great in the meantime", or await for her return the end of June. How can she refer me to another stylist who would be "'great in the meantime". Dez did not ask me one single question about what my hair type is or what services I need,yet she can refer me?..I would recommend anyone who thouught of this place as a professional..be warned. And by the way...Dez never replied on who this other stylist, the one that would be "great in the meantime."...Not a positive or pleasant experience at all. I do not recommend read more

We've discussed my extreme hair laziness and gotten my haircut down to step-out-of-the-shower-and-go perfection. I feel compelled to write a review after reading the negative review posted here as it was so different from what I experienced. Let me just start out by saying that the first time I walked through Coven's doors I felt so at home. The women of Coven are warm and friendly and have zero attitude. They treated me like I was a valued client that had been going there for years in the way they welcomed me that first time. From Merrick at the front desk to Drew who cut and colored my hair to Alexis and Jenny who chit-chatted with me as I spent time there. A fellow customer even offered to go grab us all coffee from the espresso place next door! Now, about my service. Truthfully I was a bit nervous to switch things up since I've been going to the same stylist for 10 years and have had great experiences. When I got that 'itch' for new hair I realized I hadn't planned ahead and was unfortunately out of luck. I immediately thought of Coven because I'd gone to a really great braiding class/workshop there around the holidays and loved the environment and energy so much (that, and the way Bumble + Bumble smells). I booked my services with Drew (partial highlights / medium haircut) and I LOVE it. I don't really know anything about hair so I can't speak technically, but the color was really surprising in a good way! The hand-painted highlights she did are placed perfectly and look so natural. I've gotten so many compliments - things like, "Your hair is so shiny!" and every time I look in the mirror I get really happy. She talked with me about the texture of my hair and while I wasn't doing anything super adventurous this time in terms of the cut she gave me some really great ideas for next time (A razor cut! A bob with movement!). She also recommended some great products for me that wouldn't interfere with my color (but I didn't feel at all pressured to purchase). Drew is a REAL pro. I can tell she's the kind of stylist that would fix anything a client wasn't 100% happy with, so it confuses me that the person who wrote the negative review didn't just talk to her about her hair instead of passive-aggressively writing a 1-star review (that mentions another salon). Like a lot of people here already, I'm biased, having gotten my hair cut by Emily for a few years now. Unlike a lot of people here already, I am a guy, and one who likes to pay a little too much for a haircut. I'll keep it simple. Emily and co are stupidly friendly, and they walk the fine line between listening to any neurotic requests and taking control to do your head right. They also give good facial hair advice and might hand you a canned beverage whose name starts with an R when you walk in. It took me a long time to find a cutter I was happy with in Seattle before I found Emily, and even though she doesn't promote "nice dude cuts" in her online profile, she rocks 'em. Oh, and they're pretty good about slotting cuts in at the last minute, at least from what I've seen so far. Don't be a jerk, obviously, but don't be shy if you're desperate, either. read more

I have been coming here for about five years now and have recommended it to every curly haired friend I know. I have never been disappointed with a cut or color and have now had various different lengths and styles that all became more beautiful than I could have ever imagined! I used to see Jenna who once took my long, rib-cage level hair to chin length in such a fun way that made me want to try even more drastic changes. Most recently I saw Dez who again took rib-cage length hair all the way to a gorgeous curly pixie cut. I've been a happy and satisfied client since following Alexis (a co-owner) to this salon when it opened. Ayla, a newer Coven stylist, blew my mind today. Yesterday, in a fit of poor judgment, I had my hair colored at a walk-in joint due to an impending unplanned trip and not being able to get an immediate appointment with Alexis. Complete disaster. I didn't think it was possible to botch highlights this badly. Tail between the legs, I headed back to Coven and said, "Please, just give me anyone to fix this." Ayla took charge and 2 hours of meticulous attention, artistry and magic later, I have gorgeous corrective color. I'm a new client and just had my hair done (full foil, a few streaks of additional color, and a cut) by Jenna and am extremely impressed. She was sweet and knowledgable and my color turned out great. The salon is intimate yet bustling and everything is on point including a nice backyard patio you can relax in while you process. The only star subtraction is that it was a bit pricey, as I seemed to get charged full price rather than a relevant portion like I do for similar services at other salons (hair cut was more like a really minimal trim on a few sections, and the additional color was probably 4 foils). You cannot find a better stylist than Jenny Slay. She has been cutting my hair off and on for almost 10 years. I would even come up from Seattle for her haircut and color. She has always stood behind her work and if I wanted anything changed, even days later, she always accommodated me; even if she had to come in on a day off or stay late. It sounds like H-S R was unhappy and Coven did everything they could to make her experience better - from comping the day to fitting her in and addressing her concerns, yet that didn't seem to matter. The salon is lovely, and everyone is very kind. They do their best to make you comfortable. I saw Madison, and she was amazing! In regard to my hair, it's not the easiest to work with by any means, it's very fine and long, yet heavy, stubbornly straight and heavy and seems to get horrible split ends and unruly tangles no matter what I do.
