Sam is super knowledgeable while still being laid back, and would be perfect for someone just starting to figure out their curls. I'd say I have intermediate curl knowledge, and I was able to get some great advice for a few specific questions. Comfortable and relaxed space (no loud music, enough room to spread out). Variety of free beverages. Great selection of curly products for sale as well. read more

I came here to get a haircut a few days ago. I have to say, I had a really amazing haircut. My hair is textured 3b/3c curls, and I did the cut with Sam. Sam is a knowledgeable, experienced, and talented stylist! Us curly haired gals know frizz well, TOO well and dare I say, we also know what it is to have terrible haircuts that were meant for straight-hair and plopped onto our heads with little regard for texture and shape. Sam deeply understands curls and takes the time to listen to my requests and give me guidance on what would work best. She doesn't push products but does help me consider techniques and reasonable cremes that help with the frizz situation. I moved to Seattle a few years ago and have tried out a few different curly hair salons with very little luck. Helix Salon was the first time I have left the salon and liked my hair cut immediately. Typically, I like my hair cut ~3-4 weeks after getting it done, but it has only been four days since my cut and I am already loving it. Sam not only gave me a ton of very useful information about curly hair that in my 28 years I had never learned, but she also listened to what I wanted for my own hair, including what length I wanted, that my goal is to continue growing it out, etc. I will definitely be going back to Helix for all my hair cuts in the future, it was worth every penny! Siddal is awesome! I went in with my I-haven't-had -a-haircut-in-a-year mess and said just fix it please , and I love it. She just asked a few questions and then made it look amazing- no drama or judgement involved. She also didn't make a production out of it, took her half the time of my last salon without feeling rushed at all. Sam has been cutting my 3b hair since I first moved here from NYC 4 years ago. I am EXTREMELY picky about how my hair is cut and have high standards since I was used to getting my hair done at the Devachan salon in Soho, where my stylist Sophie would cut my hair dry, curl by individual curl. I was very worried that moving here meant I would never have a good haircut again and that I'd need to fly back to NYC just to get a trim. Then I found Sam when she was still working at Vain by searching for Deva trained stylists in the area and she assuaged my fears! I've seen two other stylists who were also Deva trained since I've been here but neither cut my hair as well as Sam. She's also a wizard with color and I've loved the pintura highlights she's done for me back when I was coloring my hair. She is very attentive to detail and responsive to feedback about your cut, which shows how invested she is in making sure you are happy with how you look. I highly recommend her to any other natural curlies out there who are struggling to find a stylist who understands their needs. Her pricing is competitive and her salon space is very comfortable & clean, and she's also just a pleasure to sit with and knows when folks want to chat and when you just need to sit in silence for a while. I had such a great experience at Helix yesterday!! Sam was so kind, personable and funny; I normally get anxious going to salons but she put me so at ease. It was my first cut at Helix and I wanted to go from medium-length, very thick hair to a pixie cut and she was so enthusiastic about it! The final cut makes me so happy and looks great! I just finished my first color (ever!) with Sam. She was amazing start to finish. I came to her for a consultation and brought in ideas of what I wanted and she was very honest with me about the process, what it would do to my hair, and what she could do. I decided to choose her for my pintura highlights, and am I glad I did. She chose beautiful colors, blended them well, and answered all my questions, concerns, and anxieties. I didn't feel any pressure or shame for asking (tons) of questions about examples and visuals, and she was super great at making me feel comfortable with the whole thing. Sam is incredible. I have been seeing her religiously for the last 5 or so years. Since seeing her, I understand how to style my hair and wear it curly without shame. I am a 2c curl and have struggled with frizz my entire life. I would often give up and wear it in a pony tail. Sam brought the science back into my hair and taught me what my hair needs. I love my hair now and regularly get complemented on it. Every time, I recommend they see Sam and get help from her. She is also a really amazing person who is supportive and inclusive.
