I often go to the Cotton Patch (CP) in McKinney, Texas and it's awesome! This location is not run quite as smoothly. The food is really good (fried green tomatoes) and tastes fresh. Some of the items they have that are really good are meatloaf, fried green tomatoes, chicken fried chicken, Cajun duo, and the Dr. Pepper cake. Since the service was a tad bit slow, the Manger offered us a free appetizer......which we refused because we don't want anything for free. Anyway, the food is really good, the menu is fairly robust, and they care about their customers. Update: Feb 2017 - this place really cares about their customers! The most rude service I ever received in my life! When we walked in everybody was just staring like we did not belong there. So we stood there about 5 min and thought we had to seat ourselves. Before I could ask the young lady do we seat ourselves she cut me off "somebody coming". Long story short we were racially profiled and the manager act like she cared but I really believe she did not. read more

Well I've tried 3 different locations-Ennis,Wylie,and here-this is the best by far-they were struggling last year(I stayed away) but with a great new manager(didn't get her name unfortunately) and rebuilding the staff(she seems to inspire teamwork!) they are back to doing great business-even the food tastes better with good service-and speaking of-I was at the counter after lunchtime today and had great service again(previously,my favorite was Amber) today's server held up to Amber's high standards(just enough-not obtrusive=a fine balance!) In short-if you have experienced problems here in the past-give em another chance-I am impressed by the way she(new manager) has turned it around! read more

I wanted to give 4 3/4 stars ... Very good eats!!!! Hit it every time I'm in town, especially if it's for an $ 8.00 Chicken fried steak on Mondays. One of my parents favorite places to eat. My father is going through some health issues, and is in a wheel chair. There were plenty of empty tables, it was New Years Eve, and in between lunch and dinner around 3:30, I think ... The male host person, had us wait in their small waiting area, were we got the full blow of cold air every time the door opened. It was freezing that day. Got seated, and things went up from there ... Chris our waiter was polite and quick to come over. Drinks came out very fast, skillet cornbread soon followed. Chris was very good, but didn't hover too much. Gravy came out on a chicken fried steak, that was to be on the side ... But other than that it was as ordered, hot and tasty! My burger, one of the best I have had in a long time. It was a pleasure to have a quality professional waiter! Customer service is hard to find in our society these days. Never been to one before so when we drove by while shopping, I thought we should give it a try. I had the Wedge salad and it was wonderful. I LOVE strong blue cheese. My son had the grilled salmon and it was SO GOOD! He and I also shared the queso/salsa and chips and the salsa beats out some of the favorite mexican restaurants in freshness alone. Queso was very good as well. We will be back. It was clean too but during the lunch rush, the bathroom needed a little attention and more toilet paper. read more

This is a great place, I had the lunch portion of chicken fried steak and it was pretty big. Best tasting white gravy I've ever had in a restaurant. I actually have to give credit to my son in law for the very best turkey sausage white gravy in Texas. Anyway, I really liked this place! Our waiter was attentive and polite. The deep-fried bacon appetizer was really good today, having that will keep me from having to go to the STATE FAIR OF TEXAS! I had the Cobb salad with blue cheese and it was so very tasty. I live less than 2 minutes from this Cotton Patch so I've been here a few times. Each time I say I'm never going back. Then after church on Sunday someone wants to go and I think maybe it will surprise me and be good but so far it hasn't. I've been to other Cotton Patch locations that are actually good, this one just isn't! I've had RAW chicken strips served to my child. I've been served raw chicken, then when asked to get a new plate it appeared they nuked it and I got dried out strips of chicken. The fish and chips lack flavor. The service is poor, slow and all around lacking. Not rude or outright bad just not good. The only thing I've had that I thought was really good was the chicken and dumplings, and the rolls (note: not the corn bread). read more

They have great bread and corn bread and the food is surprisingly good with quite a few healthier options. I will come here occasionally when I am alone for a weekend and want a quick bite that is on then lighter side. After black eyed pea closing this is the most likely home cooking option near by. Ok so we gave this location another chance. Well we got seated in 15 mins, so everything was looking good from when we got there. Drinks were brought in a timely manor. We order chips and salsa and larger cheese frys. After 20 mins asked if the apps were coming. Then within in 2 mins we had both. Good game about 5 mins after the apps. We got most of what we ordered. 2 others with us waited for there veggie's. We asked 3 times for them. When we did get them, they were not good. Way over cooked. Food was warm, not hot. When you order fried food how the hell cant it be hot. ( oh yeah it sat in the window and died.) Then the check. Let me just say, absolutely everyone that works here that I've come in contact with is friendly, down-to-earth, and helpful. The service is good and the waitstaff takes the time to chat with you if that's your thing. If you sit closer to the bar then you have access to the TVs playing whatever game is most in demand at the time. There are a few things that I normally get at this place that make my mouth water just thinking about them. The rolls here are not only amazing but plentiful; they have cornbread available as well but the rolls are my favorite. Next on my list would have to be the blue cheese wedge salad which is the standard wedge salad that most restaurants have - it comes with diced tomatoes, freshly made crumbled bacon, blue cheese crumbles, and blue cheese dressing. Oh and of course the wedge of iceberg lettuce. The entree item on my list is the Grilled Cajun Duo which comes with tilapia and shrimp grilled in a Cajun spice mix and a lovely cream sauce over a rice pilaf. You get your choice of 2 sides and if it is in season, I love the butternut squash. The last item to complete my visit at the Cotton Patch Cafe is their blackberry cobbler a la mode. I love this cobbler so much because it isn't like a regular cobbler. I normally do not like cobbler but theirs is served with a lot of the fruit juice and it is not dry at all. They are not my first go to but I gave them a chance last night and I will not be back. When we arrived they checked our temp before we were seated which I appreciated as an effort of precaution but then they proceeded to seat us at a booth that had not been thoroughly cleaned. The table itself was cleaned but as I slid into the booth seating I felt crumbs and food on the seat. The waitress was rather slow, she failed to bring me lemon with my water as requested and after I finished my first glass of water she brought my refill with lemon. Our order was taken 20 min. after arrival and 50 min. later we still had not been served. We did get our spinach dip appetizer and it was overcooked. After waiting for almost an hour for my dinner, 3 glasses of water and overcooked appetizer I was ready to go. My husband requested our meals to go but they were still going to be a little longer!! At which point the manager did come to apologize and I appreciated his efforts but I politely declined any more service. I offered to pay for the service and appetizer I had received but he covered it for me. Thank you kind sir! Overall the service was subpar, the menu is the equivalent of Chili's or Applebee's (OVERPRICED fast food) and the restaurant was dirty. I have actually had better experiences at Chili's and Applebee's and they are my last resort options for dining out. read more

We order a family meal of Chicken Fried Steak with white gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans and salad to serve six. The meal was ordered at 10:30am and was scheduled to be picked up at 5:30pm. I arrived at 5:25pm and called inside for the curb side pickup. The gentleman that answered the phone was polite and said my meal would be out shortly. About 5:30 the same gentleman came to my car and let me know that they were out of gravy but were making more and it should be ready in 10-15 minutes. At about 5:45pm a young lady that had been delivering meals to cars came to mine. She informed me that the kitchen was out of white gravy and had not even started making more. She also said it would take about 15 minutes to have it ready. I informed her that people were waiting for their meal and I would appreciate it if they hurried up. I then asked to speak to a manager. She stated she would get one fir me. Fifteen minutes later (6:00) the manager had still not come to speak to me. I walked inside and found the young lady that said she would get the manager for me standing behind the counter along with the manager. She said "the manager is right there was in her way out to talk to you." I then asked the manager what the point was in ordering ahead to have a meal ready for pickup if I had to wait 30 minutes for my order when I arrive on time to pick it up. She blamed the lack of promptness on a large number of orders that all came in at the same time. I let her know that her lack of kitchen/ time management, although a huge inconvenience for me, was not my problem. All that just to say I believe the manager showed no customer service by offering any compensation for my lost time and inconvenience it caused me by her not managing her kitchen/ restaurant efficiently. read more

We always enjoyed Cotton Patch Cafe. It has a lot of Southern food full of the horrible things your doctors warn you about. I enjoyed the Chicken Fried Steak and Hubby like the Salmon with the Crawfish Sauce. The waitstaff varies depending on the time of day. I've never been in any of the locations without management nearby and ready to properly handle any types of feedback or complaints you may have.This resturant is another reason we miss Texas! read more

We just wanted lunch and to try a new place. We were already on the move so I quickly did an internet search for a place with good ratings in the direction we were headed. The atmosphere and staff gave us high hopes for an excellent meal. There was nothing wrong with anything per-say but it was all a little bland. Between us we had the catfish and the sides with salad. I decided not to say anything since it was a busy time. I ordered my food. About that time the gal who seated me must have been told by the guy that I wanted to be off to the side. Very disappointed with the service and the food. I live in California and I've ate here about eight months ago and it was absolutely delicious. I asked my parents to let's go have dinner there and they said that the service had changed and the food has gone down. I could not believe that service was no good because I know TEXAS folks are very respectful ... but I was wrong our waitress was not nice and she also got our order wrong. Then when the food came out it was all downhill from there. We ordered the fried mushrooms for appetizers and they were under cooked, for dinner we all ordered the chicken fried steak and that was over cooked and the mash potatoes were cold. Terrible experience at your Rockwall, TX location. We did a mobile order for curbside pickup. Order was placed at 3:02 pm and didn't arrive until 3:58 pm, almost an hour of waiting. All food was cold as well as there were several items missing. I told the cashier that my order was unacceptable and that I wanted a refund. The manager "Tim" took 10 minutes to refund my order and he did not attempt to make my experience better. He did not offer to remake my order nor offer an apology. His attitude towards the situation made things worst. I will never purchase food from here again and will influence friends and family to do the same. This is unacceptable and I know it does not represent the Cotton Patch brand. Tim needs serious customer service training and he needs to be disciplined as he does not currently display manager characteristics. read more

1/14/18 A disaster from the word go. We got there at about 8 pm after a long night of swimming. The food online looked great, but now I question if they photo shopped them. We were sat at a table within 10 minutes. Not bad for as busy as it was. One of the managers sat us, asked what we wanted to drink and said the server would be right with us. Well, we waited....and waited....and waited. Finally the manager brought our beverages, and she said she would send the server to take our orders (again). And we waited...and waited...and waited. During this wait, the table next to us began complaining about their food. They had ordered chips and queso and salsa, and received chips that were soggy and limp. The customer actually torn them in front of one of the other managers. Mind you we are still waiting for food. We still haven't seen a server. The manager walks over to us again and I ask her if they are having problems tonight. She assures us that everything is ok. I told her we still haven't seen a server, and I jokingly say, "Is she dead". She then says that the server has had an accident. Wow. So she takes our order. I am by now getting nervous about this whole deal. We wait so long, that finally I see her again and tell her we are going to leave. With the complaints, customers leaving because they are being sat at tables with food still under them on the floor, and our food not in sight yet, I tell her I am not willing to play russian roulette with the outcome here. She begs us to stay and says she will make sure everything is fine with our meal. Truthfully, I felt bad for her. We stayed despite our better judgement, and mostly because my son was ready to code and chew on the wood chairs. He was so hungry by now, he just didn't want to go somewhere else and wait any longer. So, she quickly comes back with our soups. One chicken and dumplings I ordered, and one chicken tortilla that my husband ordered. I took one spoon of the soup and handed it off to my son who really needed to eat something by then. The dumplings were complete mush and there was no chicken to be seen. It desperately screamed for salt and pepper, and the best I can say is that it tasted like elders paste with chicken broth. My husband did like the tortilla soup and my son tasted it and like it too. So we finished the soups and now waited for the entrees. Mind you we still had not seen a server, our drinks had been empty now for some time. And here come a man with a tray. He served us our order. I had the 6oz. sirloin medium rare with steamed veggies and a side of green beans and broccoli rice casserole, my son had the baja fish tacos, and my husband had the fish and chips. The server placed our food and asked if we wanted refills on our drinks, and went off to get them. Within a couple minutes another server, comes over and asked us if we needed beverage refills, and we told her someone had already asked and was taking care of it. She was the server that was now taking us on. She asked how our food was. I told her my steak was a little over, and that my steamed veggies had not come yet. She went to take care of it. The broccoli rice casserole, while tasty, was underdone and the rice was a little more than hard. When the steamed veggies arrive, they were cooked well, but had absolutely no seasoning on them at all. Once butter and salt were on them, they were really nicely done. All in all the food was not horrible. It was tasty. The fish tacos were very good, and the fish and chips were also very good. That or we were all really hungry. lol. The server which was now taking care of us was very nice and the restaurant was pretty empty by now. I took the opportunity to ask her what was going on here that everyone seemed to be in the weeds, and the place seemed in chaos. I was told that the entire place had all new managers, and that the company had instituted all new procedures all at once which was bogging down the kitchen, the wait staff, and that the managers were not efficient. I told her, she should be working somewhere else, with her personality, and she replied she had already given notice, and that she had worked her last day the night before, but that they begged her to come in that Sunday to work. This was an unfortunate decision as a location to eat. The restaurant is clearly in turmoil and not making progress. I would stay away from here for quite a while or go on off hours, when the kitchen and wait staff are not chickens with their heads cut off. The food does beg for another shot at it, though I don't think with the quantity of choices in the area, that we will give it another try. They did make it right, and literally charged us $8.35 for the entire bill, and send us off with beverages to go, and even offered a free dessert, which we declined.
