I haven't used Cothron's but I did call to get a quote and it seemed expensive to me. It is $60 for them just to come out. $15 - $30 for each lock installation plus cost of parts. For the locks I'm looking at, they cost $13.20 each. They charge $15 to install a peep hole plus the cost of part. (Note--this is for keyless deadbolts) What was a little annoying is that when I called the main line, I got transfered to a different person to give me a quote. But when I asked about the cost of parts, I got transfered again. Not a huge deal but a little annoying. I'm going to shop around and see if this is comparable in terms of cost. read more

I went in with a broken Honda Key. The key had come out of the shell. It was replaced with an aftermarket cheap shell that wouldn't even close all the way. I pointed it out to Houdini and he disappeared again only to come back and say the inside was waterproof. It looks like crap and seems very cheap. For over $100 you would think they could do better. I'd been looking for a keyed lock for my sliding glass door and it's been a pain in the ass trying to find something to replace the non keyed lock that I have. I brought the latch parts for the sliding glass door in, and they spent a lot of time helping me figure out how to proceed with this project. They had the parts I needed at their warehouse, but it would take a few days for the parts to come in. In the end, Dave did some sleuthing online and found an alternate source for the parts from a competitor. I'm shocked at how honest these guys are. I had an issue with a lock on one of those big containers you put on your car rack. Yakima, Thule and others make them. Well this one is made by Mont Blanc and is not a normal key. I must have called 15 locksmith's and went to see a couple of them. Cothron's was the only one that could give me ANY useful information and help. Josh and his partner left a little while ago. I am happily in possession of keys for 2 separate houses. They replaced two deadbolts and reprogrammed a keypad deadbolt entry I could neither figure out nor find its necessary user's manual. IF you have a NICE SAFE and WOOD FLOORS, you really need to think twice before using these guys. They were very nice but really, really GOUGED our BRAND NEW WOOD FLOORS AND DIDN'T SEEM TO REALLY KNOW HOW TO MOVE A LARGE GUN SAFE. In addition, the cost was NO WHERE EVEN CLOSE to what I was told. They did get the job done and it is appreciated but I would surely look to another company that is experienced in moving safes into homes with wood, tile and carpet flooring. I went there with an ignition that needed a key made form it. They did it pretty fast and barely charged me for it (like $25 bucks? that's pretty damn reasonable). The service isn't quite top notch. I'd have to say that they're not very nice. I mean, they're not horrible, terrible, disgusting people, but they definitely aren't super big on smiles, pleases and thank-yous. I called for a quote on changing the mailbox key. I was told $35 for service call and $25 for the lock. A time was set and the locksmith didn't have a lock with him. We scheduled at another time to meet and he didn't show up. After calling I finally met him, he changed out the lock and charge me $200, $150 for labor! I call that bait and switch! Super over priced. I bought a basic knob with no lock and key for $20. While I was waiting in line the older gentleman at the register was yelling at a older couple about their car key. Instead of giving them ideas on where to go for help he just kept saying I can't help you. Only reason we stopped was the furniture store next door and I won't be returning. Don't waste your time going any place else. These guys are the pros if you want it done right and want it done the first time. I had a special key port blank that they were able to do (recommended by them anyway). NEVER AGAIN. I wanted to support the independent guys and not go to Home Depot or Lowe's, so I came here. I needed a new mailbox lock and the clueless salesperson swore up and down that they're standard. So I purchased one and took it home. It doesn't fit. So now I'm out the money because they don't do returns. I am eating the money and learned my lesson the hard way- go to Lowe's where they guarantee their products with a return policy if it doesn't work for you. read more

That night found out the lock won't lock with the new keys. Give them a cal the next morning. They said they'd send some on out that day. The day went by and no one showed up. Cothron's service as good from start to finish. I called around noon for non-emergent service and my super tech Juan was at my front door around 1:30. He got my kitchen door open, diagnosed the lock problem, and checked to see if he had the part on his truck so I could keep the knobs but that didn't work out. He went back to the shop, got a new lock and tested out a key fob that wouldn't program. He took care of replacing the lock and rekeying my deadbolt to match the other doors. The cost was quite reasonable and less than what I was quoted by the dispatcher. I will use Cothron's again anytime I need a locksmith. read more
