I've been loyal to Costa Vida for years and spent my college years eating at the original location in Utah, so I know what Costa Vida is supposed to be. The Flower Mound location has gone seriously downhill. I don't know if there's new ownership or management, but something has clearly changed. The last 2-3 times I've ordered, the portions have been ridiculously small. It got so bad that I started paying for double chicken plus an additional side of steak, and I'm still getting less protein than I used to get in a normal order. The last time was almost comical: they didn't include the chicken at all. I paid for a double portion of chicken and a side of steak, and my order showed up with no chicken and just a tiny side cup of steak. How do you charge someone for double chicken and then forget the chicken entirely? Then you try to get it fixed and discover you can't even speak to someone at the actual Flower Mound restaurant. You get routed to an unhelpful corporate customer service person who tells you they'll "let the store know" and promises an email for a comped meal. Of course, the email never comes. Because I've loved Costa Vida for so many years, I gave this location another chance. Same tiny portions, same disappointment. At this point, this isn't a one-off mistake. It's a pattern. This is not the first time this has happened at this location.. pick up time was 6:30 and I got the food finally at 7:16 pm and then I get to the car check the bag and they didn't put everything in the bag. This time, we got a hot plate of nachos! The salad.... it is definitely a MUST TRY. The chunks of mango made the salad super refreshing. I wished they had more mango chunks in the salad though. This review has been a long time coming, but the overall message I want to yell is: Don't eat here. I'll preface this and say we love this STYLE of Tex Mex. However we only came back this final time because we like the style of food. We live states away from a similar competitor (Cafe R) that we have fond memories of. But, nearly every time we come to this particular location, something inevitably goes downright wrong. This last time it was a special occasion for our family and we wanted to grab something quick for the evening to celebrate a birthday. And they forgot a meal. And 2 drinks. And a full serving of rice and beans in the other kids meal. The serving given was a singular tablespoon. Yes, the OTHER KIDS meal was the one they left out. Três leches cake was DRY...dry tres leches cake! It is possible. The manager was willing to refund for the missed meal when we called to bring it to their attention; however, the manager's "management" of the situation was dismal in customer service experience with no tact or remorse. The conversation was relayed between the previous employee and the manager in an unprofessional manner. Just further disappointment in training quality of this chain. Let alone that special occasion was a birthday! And there was ZERO acknowledgment or remorse aside from a refund. The time months before it was they didn't add extra meat to an order (when you pay the extra $), grilled vegetables that were way past expiration and fishy in a salad, meager portions of meat in a burrito, wilted salad leaves that made a salad hardly edible (but we made the trip and it was late). Just thoughtless service. This place is just bad and it just shows time and again. This location has lost our trust and we are looking elsewhere for this style of Tex mex. As others have said, the setup is like Chipotle, but the flavor profiles are a bit different. Those seem to stem from the salsas that you choose. My first couple of visits, the ratio of the rice to beans and veggies seemed really disproportionate so I am baffled about them having a drive thru. I can't imagine ordering through Chipotle or a Freebirds through a drive thru, sight unseen, and being completely satisfied. Just seems like a strange business choice. On my third visit, I customized the portions of the ingredients more and they were accommodating with that. They also gave me the option of sampling several meats before deciding. I didn't know this was an option on my first two visits, so be sure to ask if you can't decide! Frankly, the prices seem high! I got one of the cheaper options on my first visit by getting a baja bowl and regular drink, and it came out to $10.50. Hard to think that a burrito, 2 tacos or a bowl would be the same price for a protein as the portion has to be different. They mainly separate their menu by protein, which can make it confusing and gives you the option of having a very expensive lunch. However, they are flexible. That first visit, they gave me the option of getting half sweet pork and half chicken. They also have daily specials which feature an entrée and small drink for $7.99. On my second visit, I got a small chicken salad and that was the closest portion to price deal I experienced out of all my visits. I mentioned that the prices were high, but the portions are very large. I guess I just didn't find that as much of an appeal because I didn't particularly enjoy any of the entrées I had that much. I am still giving it 3 stars, because I suspect this just isn't my preferred flavor profile, so I'm not the ideal customer. Part of not enjoying it seems to be that the convection oven and salsas change the flavors completely. I had tasted the chicken beforehand when I got my burrito and it tasted completely different after going through the oven. I thought the tortilla had a really unpleasant aftertaste as well, that seemed to be from the cook in the oven. The salsas get really runny and messy during that process too, so a burrito is more difficult to eat compared to the bowl. The salad didn't go through the oven and was the one I liked the most. I'm not necessarily saying it's all the ovens fault, but again, not my flavor preference. For example, I thought the sweet pork was waaayyyy too sweet, as well as one of their salsas. Some people might love that, I just found it to be overly sweet and a turn off. I thought their steak was too chewy, which is my biggest gripe with Chipotle. The beef and chicken had the best flavor, but the beef was very soupy so I don't think that could work in a burrito without making a huge mess. Which is a shame, because it's very flavorful. I didn't sample the shrimp. They may have a consistency issue. I couldn't really taste the rice on my first couple of visits and on my last visit it was overwhelmingly cilantro flavored. The chicken was really dry my first visit, but worked with the red sauce. On my third visit, the chicken wasn't dry, but the same combination had an unpleasant flavor. They have fountain drinks and teas, but I've tried their Jamaica, Limonada and Horchata. All were pretty good for a fast casual place, above average! They have some desserts. I tried their Tres Leches for $3.99 and it was a good portion and pretty tasty. Service on the line is very good. However, when you walk in, when you leave and while in the dining area, you won't be acknowledged. Every time I have been there, they were fully staffed, if not overstaffed. There always seem to be manager meetings going on in the seating area, at least on Friday afternoons, which is when all my visits were. The management never once checked on anyone dining in while I was there. However, the staff on the line is very sweet and helpful with suggestions. Lastly, I want to urge you to check their allergen chart online if you have even slight allergies. I realized that after all three visits, I had heartburn in the evening and woke up with a swollen throat, which didn't happen any other times over the six weeks of these 3 visits. I checked out their allergen chart and saw their sauces all checked for dairy. I have a specific allergy that has never been a problem with sauces before, but it didn't list out the ingredients or portions, so that may have explained the very minor reaction. If you have a severe allergy, I would ask them specifically what is in everything. I've never been a fan of soupy/runny textures and have never liked too much sweet with my savory, so think about what your preferences are. My coworker suggested this place based on getting the daily specials for the chicken enchiladas and the beef burrito and really liked the place. You may too, so give them a shot and keep in mind they've only been open a few months. read more

Prerequisite: look at menu/site/Yelp before visiting via drive thru. I went through the drive thru on my first ever time here. The menu is not clear enough on what you're getting to be able to order with confidence - so I highly suggest looking here or online for the menu and pictures. I couldn't tell what I was actually getting from the menu so I chose something that I knew generally about, the Baja Bowl. I assumed it would be similar in construction to the Chipotle bowl, so I shrugged and went with it! I was asked what beans I wanted (without being given my options verbally), I didn't really know my options and I scanned the menu and blurted out "black" and that's what I got! Then I was asked what sauce (again, no idea what they meant), so I asked what they each are - and I was given a general description that didn't make it sound like there were any spicy ones, so I opted for the verde salsa. (I later regret this.) I was asked if pico, cheese, and rice were okay - I said no cheese (because I don't prefer shredded cheese in my bowls). What I got: a Baja Bowl. A soggy, bland Baja Bowl. I imagine I would have loved it without the salsa. It completely swamped the bowl and had almost no flavor; maybe a very mild sweetness. Since I got it to-go through the drive through, I didn't have access to tobasco sauces to spice it up. Super disappointing. However, I did like the chicken (although there wasn't much of it) and the rest of the ingredients seemed fresh, but overall there wasn't much flavor (read: seasoning) I'm super glad I ordered chips and queso, which I would give 5 stars! Will probably try again with NO salsa. And probably ask for a sampling of all the salsas because I would like a spicier (non roasted if possible) fresh salsa! Soggy bowls are not delicious. Think Chipotle like order / serving methodology, pick your meats, add ons etc. Portions are decent size for around $9, but how is the actual food? Queso was great, accompanying chips, below average. A claim of freshly made must mean ...at least made this week... Raspberry chicken enchiladas, scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best, about a 4. Shredded beef enchiladas, about a 4, same scale. Why so low? Both dishes, even after being run thru the toaster oven to melt the cheese, were just COLD. Really? You can choose a sauce for your entre, seems they keep them ice cold. Really? I did see other reviews noting the food was cold too, believe them. If I'm ordering cerviche, cold is ok. Enchildadas? Not so much. After several extremely disappointing experiences at this location (hour wait time, steak quesadilla with nothing but gristle, untrained lazy staff), I decided to avoid it entirely. Updated review We came at a different time and date to see if things would be different. They were definitely different and the food was much better and the customer service had improved as well. My only concerns are - the daily specials seem to have disappeared. I also remember when this location first opened that they were always busy. In the time we were there - we were the only customers in the restaurant and it was around 6 pm on Wednesday. Unless their to go business is booming - I am wondering why this location always seems empty. I hope that they can succeed. We were pleasantly surprised in the improvement from our last visit a month ago and hope that the improvements are not temporary but sustained so this location can hopefully survive and do well.
