I've loved Portillo's ever since I first moved to Chicago back in 2001. I became a regular pretty quickly. It was one of those places you just kept going back to because the food was consistently great and it felt like a true Chicago institution. So when Portillo's finally came to Texas, I was thrilled. Let's start with the star of the show...the Italian Beef with hot peppers. It's incredible. Order it dipped and you will be in food heaven. And if you really want the ultimate Chicago move, make it a combo by adding the Maxwell Street sausage. That combination is absolute perfection. Messy, bold, and ridiculously good. Of course, the Chicago-style hot dogs are outstanding too. Just make sure you order it the right way and "drag it through the garden." That means the full lineup of toppings, just like they do in Chicago. It's the real deal. The sides are fantastic as well. The crinkle-cut fries are always solid, and the onion rings are super crispy and addictive. If you're trying to behave a little, the chopped salad is my wife's favorite. It's fresh, loaded with flavor, and honestly one of the best salads you'll get anywhere. And here's the surprise for people who haven't tried it...the hamburger is fantastic. Big, meaty, juicy, and full of flavor. I'll say it plainly. It's better than just about any fast-food or fast-casual burger out there. Bottom line...Portillo's isn't just another restaurant. It's a Chicago legend that delivers every single time. I'm glad Texas finally got the memo. read more

This place is really growing on me! I think part of this is the fact that they have regular deals on different food items which make eating here are a great value! You definitely need to join their club! It's counter service, pick up your own food, but they do a really great job! They have kiosks which you can order from... or use their app if you don't want to go to the counter. They seem to have really high-quality food for the price. The burgers are huge, almost enough for two. Onion rings are really good, but no one beats Sonic! The place is well lit, well maintained and always very clean. Outdoor seating available, if you like. I have now been here twice and have tried one of their Chicago dogs with rings, and a burger with fries. I typically only eat hot dogs at a baseball game , and I am a mustard and onions gal. However, I really enjoyed the Chicago dog. I liked the veggies and I thought the hot dog was quality. The burger was hefty and it had a backyard, grill quality to it. They do crinkle cut fries that all were fresh and crispy, but fluffy on the inside. Though my favorite were the onion rings. Super solid and you don't get that onion pull. Clean bites! When I got the burger, I used the drive thru, and it did have a bit of a wait, but everything came out fresh. Next time I will be trying their Italian beef. read more

I had some high expectations for Portillo's as my friends in Chicago rave about it but I was honestly a little disappointed. I sent a pic to my Chicago friends and they asked me "where is the beef"? I was expecting a beef filled sandwich but what I received was nothing like what everyone described. I think Potbelly's makes a better beef sandwich and their peppers are even better too. Portillo's... a Chicago institution serving up the classics with all the Windy City fanfare! First up, the hot dog--executed with military precision. Steamed poppy bun? Check. Neon green relish? I have been to multiple Portillo's locations across Illinois and DFW, this was the worst. The food tasted completely off, and I was nauseous the entire ride home. I ended up throwing up all of my food and felt immediately relieved when it left my system. To top it all off, when I went to use the restroom, every single toilet, yes, 3 of the 3 toilets, were unflushed and filthy. This visit turned me off from Portillo's completely and I can't see myself even wanting to go to The Colony location that's nearest to me after this experience. read more

Very high quality sandwich, but not a lot of flavor unless you add the extras like peppers, cheese, and onions, and then in will be very expensive. Perhaps the Chicago style hot dogs are the way to go. Restaurant is clean, but too loud and not comfortable. As for service, I do not use kiosks or drive thru orders so you can save on labor, ordering was good at the counter. Your order is called out very loud which would make an uncomfortable experience when dining in. This is an example of what the "hospitality" industry has become, which is not a positive! Tried Portillo's again ONLY because a friend was interested in trying it after a movie across the street. Pretty much the same reaction as last time with a few new experiences: The ordering kiosks are some of the most awkward, error prone, un-user friendly kiosks I've ever used. Very touch sensitive and ended up putting things in cart we didn't want. Then the screen scroll locked up making ordering at counter less frustrating and faster. Still no mention of or offer for the (free) gravy by the cashier, but the (chargeable) peppers and cheese they push. Order was thrown in the bag with no markings as to what was what. Sandwich type? Sweet vs hot peppers? And again, why if "eating in" do you feel the need to pack everything sloppily in a bag that then needs to be unpacked instead of just putting the food on a tray? I'd have to think the presentation and taste would be improved if not wrapped in paper / plastic. My friend even said, "There's no tray?" as we had to rip open bags to make our own placemats. On a positive note, because I now knew to order the gravy to make it "wet" and with the addition of hot peppers, the Italian beef sandwich itself was better this time but not amazing. O-rings both times were good. Ambiance is the best part of the experience. Obviously Portillo's is just not for me. This is my pregnancy craving go to! Have been living off Portillo's through my 1st trimester & was hoping for more. I don't like to complain but the disappointment is even stronger when my food aversions have me limited on what I can handle. Yesterday, I ordered a spicy chicken salad with extra chicken, but there was no extra chicken included, they cut up less than one portion into tiny pieces. (I always order with extra chicken, I know & love the difference with extra.) Today, I tried the croissant beef and cheddar sandwich, hoping for the beef smothered in cheese and it was a letdown as well; the bread was completely soaked in grease but the meat was dry, the bread was soggy smashed flat and cold, and there were only two tiny shreds of cheese, one shred on each half of the sandwich. It seemed like a great day for a Chili Cheese Dog, so I came to Grapevine's Portillo's. Upon entering you quickly realize if you have seen one Portillo's, you have seen them all. The walls are adorned with old gas station and automotive service signs, giving the places a vintage ambiance. The only main difference between locations is a local wall saying what town you are in. The food is pretty much the same as well. Today I ordered a Chili Cheese Dog, Fries with Cheese Sauce, a Sprite, and a Alice of Chocolate Cake. The Fries and Cheese Sauce rocked! The cake was real cold too. The Chili Cheese Dog was a bit disappointing. I wanted to like Portillo's, but it honestly didn't live up to the hype. The hot dogs and Italian beef sounded amazing, but mine came out a bit soggy and bland. The fries were greasy and not very crisp, and the portion sizes felt small for the price. The service was slow, and even though the place was busy, it seemed like the staff wasn't managing the line very well. This was my first time at Portillo's! My husband and I ordered through the drive thru. We had our fur baby in the car so it was easier for us to keep her in the back seat. IYKYK! No lines in the drive thru. We must have been lucky! The staff was friendly and the service was quick. While waiting for our food, one member came out to deliver the soda. I thought it was nice that she asked to pet our dog rather than automatically touching her. She stayed for a few seconds then returned to work. While waiting for the food, we looked inside the kitchen. Everything looked brand new! I thought that Portillo's was open for a while or they keep it in top shape! I was very impressed. I ordered the cheeseburger meal with cheese sauce on the side and a large sprite. My husband ordered the Italian Beef sandwhich and the jumbo hot dog (Chicago Style). I thought the cheeseburger was delicious! I ate it within 6 bites! I thoroughly enjoyed the burger -very tender and juicy. The vegetables tasted fresh and I loved it! You know it's good when you get it two days in a row, and drive 30 minutes because the one closest to you (Addison) is temporarily closed. This time I got the Italian Beef sandwich with mozzarella, hot peppers & sweet peppers - gravy (au jus) on the side. Their hot peppers are . My fiancé got the Italian Beef with Sausage with the same add ons I did. I took a bite of his, and the sausage takes the sandwich to a whole new level. Mine was delicious, his was better. Not better than the Polish Chicago Dog though. I had that yesterday - it's now my new favorite food. And what I will be getting next time I go. This place is hit or miss depending on time of visit and the staff working. First, there is a gentleman who normally works the window who is an absolute rockstar. He will respond to you with "yes sir" or "yes ma'm" every time. I see him almost every time I come in, and when I asked him if he ever had a day off, his response was, "I really do love my job". This guy gets it, and is a perfect face for Portillo's. Came through the drive-thru tonight however, and Vivian took my order. Zero people skills. I was friendly when I got to the speaker and asked how she was doing (you know, instead of just treating her like a machine instead of a person actually taking my order). Dead silence. Crickets. So I waited a few seconds. Nothing. It wasn't until I started ordering that she engaged with me. Zero charisma at the window when I went to pay as well. I get this isn't a Dutch Bros, but c'mon - you're in a public-facing job role - engage with your customers. If you're bored with your job, find a different job. I normally order either the Rodeo Burger or the Maxwell Polish dog and add chili. Both are delicious. As others have pointed out here, the beef dip is usually disgusting - the bread will be soaked in grease and the meat dry. Is all of this enough to keep me from returning? Probably not. But is it worth driving 10+ minutes to get their food late at night? Also, probably not. read more

They just opened and had been highly anticipated so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. To my surprise the drive-through did not have too long of a line; I have seen other Portillo's in the area that were positively a madhouse. Drive through staff were very polite and welcoming. When I ordered fries, they asked if I wanted a side of cheese sauce. While I did want this, I noticed another review mentioned that no mention is made of the cost of these upsells and the same happened to me. No big deal as I wanted cheese anyway, but good feedback that if you are going to upsell you need to be clear there is an extra charge. Props to them for having Coke instead of Pepsi. I usually like my hot dogs plain with mustard, but got this one fully loaded so I could get the real Chicago experience. I gave it the old college try but I don't think I'm a fan of all the add-ons. That's OK, I can always return and order it plain or get the beef sandwich or something else. Unfortunately my bun was pretty soggy from the relish, but I give them the benefit of the doubt since I did not eat on site but drove home with the food which took about 10 minutes. I know these are prepared to order so probably if it was eaten right away that would not be an issue. French fries are the typical frozen crinkle cut fries which I usually don't think much of, but these were fresh and hot with plenty of salt. Cheese sauce was fire. Overall I would return. Initially this restaurant was growing on me but today 2/21/2026 I had a not so good experience. First off I placed my order through the drive through which had no other cars actually the inside of the restaurant looked bleak. I felt rushed and was asked approximately every 5 minutes if they could take my order even though I specifically informed the order taker I was reviewing the menu upon finalizing my order two separate people were attempting to take my order (still no one else was in line) so I informed them I would pull up to the window. Greeted by the order taker apologizing for multiple people taking my order which I appreciate. Verified order then received order from manager. When I reached my destination and started to eat my food noticed by my daughter and my French fries were more salt than French fry. I had to pour our fries in a metal strainer and continuously shake them for over 10 minutes to remove the majority of the salt. The fries were as salty as sea water if not saltier. I did contact the restaurant management and notified them of this. As a diabetic with slight hypertension as salty as these fries were would have been considered a health hazard. Note to customers request fresh no salt French fries. I definitely will not be returning, being that I'm from the Mid West I'll wait until I go back to the Chi and visit Portillo's where I know for a fact the food will be prepared right. read more

saw advertisement for Portillo's, so when my friend asked if I would like to join them for lunch at Portillo's, I agreed almost immediately. When we walked in this place was very busy they serve Chicago style hotdogs, burgers and shaved beef steak sandwiches. This place has an outdoor sitting area which was very clean, inside was very clean and neat in appearance and well organized. Staff were efficient and hard working. We didn't deal any servers as we used the kiosk at the front to place our orders. I ordered the Italian beef sandwich meal with onion rings and a small soft drink. My friend ordered the big beef bacon cheese burger with crinkle fries and soft drink. My Italian sandwich, was very tasty, but look nothing like the picture, the onion rings, were very crispy, hot and very delicious. My friend said that her big beef cheese burger with bacon, was very delicious and her fries were very good and well seasoned. If you've been to a Portillo's, you're aware of the very long lines. You're in luck with this new arrival in Grapevine. When we visited on Saturday afternoon at one PM, we were amazed to be first in line to pick up a delicious hot dog and beef sandwich. These items are legendary as is Portillo's in Chicago, which only recently expanded to the DFW area. What we remember most from this visit might surprise you. When we stopped at the pickup window, we received a heart felt "I hope you enjoy the food." His name is McKinley, not to be confused with William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States. When so many team members sound mechanical when thanking us for our business, McKinley was earnest. I don't think the manager could have said it better. I normally go to the one in Frisco. I have been going here for years, but mainly from the California Anaheim location and Frisco. It's literally my favorite restaurant, but I recently moved closer to this particular location, and I'm very sad I did. Service was very poor in comparison and the sandwich bread didn't seem cooked. I got takeout from Portillo's. I got the Chicago dog and the Italian beef sandwich, with onion rings and fries. When I went to pick up my food, I saw that the restaurant was spacious and clean. Lots of families were eating inside and there were clearly marked shelves for picking up takeout orders. My Chicago dog was tasty and I was full with one sandwich.
