Italian beef with hot peppers. The meat to bread ratio was way off. Not much beef.
Jameson B.

I had some high expectations for Portillo's as my friends in Chicago rave about it but I was honestly a little disappointed. I sent a pic to my Chicago friends and they asked me "where is the beef"? I was expecting a beef filled sandwich but what I received was nothing like what everyone described. I think Potbelly's makes a better beef sandwich and their peppers are even better too. The burger was huge but I feel it lacked seasoning. The best thing we ate was the onion rings which were a 10/10!

Service is a 10/10, I ordered online and picked up quickly. The food was tasty and hot. The only negative experience we had, which I took away a star for, was missing items that I paid extra for but did not receive. Even so we will be back to try other menu items!

Portillo's @portilloshotdogs -- Grapevine, TX Got to try Portillo's Plant Based Garden Dogs made with @fieldroast hot dogs, mustard, relish, celery salt, onions (I prefer grilled), tomatoes, sport peppers, pickle and a poppy seed bun! So delish! & they're open late! #Portillos #Fieldroast #PlantbasedHotdog

Italian beef sandwich, fries in the bag, and cheese for dipping!

Second time here within a week. Great food and nice friendly service! I love e how they call out the number and neat phrases they use to pick up your food. Love the Italian beef sandwich and fries dipped in their delicious cheese! Yummy!

Lunch date with the family and hoping for a like Chicago nostalgia. I need someone to inform these Texas locations that Italian beefs/combinations are adorned with pepperoncinis, NOT sliced Bell pepper. This was possibly my only negative takeaway the ambiance was awesome. Vintage. Service was modern and fast. Kids had bacon cheeseburgers. Wife and daughter came for the cheese sauce. Seriously. They even got some to go. Good time was had by all.

Portillo's... a Chicago institution serving up the classics with all the Windy City fanfare! First up, the hot dog--executed with military precision. Steamed poppy bun? Check. Neon green relish? Check. Sport pepper, tomato, pickle, and that mandatory sprinkle of celery salt? CHECK. This little wiener was a masterpiece. Then came the Chicago beef & sausage sandwich--dipped. Now, I knew going in that Chicagoans take their Italian beef seriously, but no one warned me that the sausage in this bad boy would come in HOT. Like, "contemplate your life choices" kind of spicy. Delicious? Absolutely. A little sweat-inducing? Also yes. And let's talk about the crinkle-cut fries--my personal favorite fry shape. They had just missed the "piping hot fresh" window by about two minutes, but that didn't stop us. We ate every last one like the dedicated fry enthusiasts we are. Final verdict? This place is a well-oiled machine of deliciousness. Would I do it all over again? In a Chicago minute.

I didn't order "to go"! - A takeout paper bag with a receipt, a Portillo's soda cup with a straw, and small containers of ketchup and sour cream on a dark table.

Tried Portillo's again ONLY because a friend was interested in trying it after a movie across the street. Pretty much the same reaction as last time with a few new experiences: The ordering kiosks are some of the most awkward, error prone, un-user friendly kiosks I've ever used. Very touch sensitive and ended up putting things in cart we didn't want. Then the screen scroll locked up making ordering at counter less frustrating and faster. Still no mention of or offer for the (free) gravy by the cashier, but the (chargeable) peppers and cheese they push. Order was thrown in the bag with no markings as to what was what. Sandwich type? Sweet vs hot peppers? And again, why if "eating in" do you feel the need to pack everything sloppily in a bag that then needs to be unpacked instead of just putting the food on a tray? I'd have to think the presentation and taste would be improved if not wrapped in paper / plastic. My friend even said, "There's no tray?" as we had to rip open bags to make our own placemats. On a positive note, because I now knew to order the gravy to make it "wet" and with the addition of hot peppers, the Italian beef sandwich itself was better this time but not amazing. O-rings both times were good. Ambiance is the best part of the experience. Obviously Portillo's is just not for me. I think the next friend that asks to come here I'll have to graciously decline.

This is my pregnancy craving go to! Have been living off Portillo's through my 1st trimester & was hoping for more. I don't like to complain but the disappointment is even stronger when my food aversions have me limited on what I can handle. Yesterday, I ordered a spicy chicken salad with extra chicken, but there was no extra chicken included, they cut up less than one portion into tiny pieces. (I always order with extra chicken, I know & love the difference with extra.) Today, I tried the croissant beef and cheddar sandwich, hoping for the beef smothered in cheese and it was a letdown as well; the bread was completely soaked in grease but the meat was dry, the bread was soggy smashed flat and cold, and there were only two tiny shreds of cheese, one shred on each half of the sandwich. The only good part was the peppers. Really been expected better. I won't give up yet but come on! Please

Yum! - Portillo's restaurant exterior with a large sign, brick facade, and parking lot visible in the background.

It seemed like a great day for a Chili Cheese Dog, so I came to Grapevine's Portillo's. Upon entering you quickly realize if you have seen one Portillo's, you have seen them all. The walls are adorned with old gas station and automotive service signs, giving the places a vintage ambiance. The only main difference between locations is a local wall saying what town you are in. The food is pretty much the same as well. Today I ordered a Chili Cheese Dog, Fries with Cheese Sauce, a Sprite, and a Alice of Chocolate Cake. The Fries and Cheese Sauce rocked! The cake was real cold too. The Chili Cheese Dog was a bit disappointing. The hot dog encasement was a little tough and I am a texture kind of guy, so that pretty much set the tone for my experience.

Good Happy Hour 3p-6p & Lunch Specials on weekdays. We enjoyed our meals and choice of side items. I got personal pizza & house salad. House salad was nothing special and they were very skimpy on the ranch. Pizza was tasty! Parmageddon & fries were enjoyed. Only thing my Dad didn't prefer with his dish was side choice of "seasonal veggies" and it was just broccoli. He was expecting more than one vegetable. He does not like broccoli but will tolerate a small amount. Lesson learned for next time, ask what the veggies are that day. Shrimp & Calamari app was good. We'll be back!

We love the decor and era theme with the MTV music video vibes. Like others have mentioned though, the service needs attention. We typically have issues with getting service on the patio, drinks are slow, we have to push for additional drinks, our food isn't severed timely, etc. Our most recent visit, I have to give our server credit, the pre-lunch salad was ordered incorrectly so it went back and by the time they re-made the salad, it came out after the main meal. My husband HATES that! We do not think twice to drive 45 minutes to get to Rock & Brew for the blackberry mojitos but to get bad service, that makes it difficult to justify. If you are headed to the bar to just have a few blackberry mojitos, I recommend this place all day. If you want service and plan to eat, I am not sure I would give it any stars with the last few visits. We have had great service here, just not in the last 3 visits.

She led me back to the table with my friends and created some small talk on the way, so that was a nice change of pace, considering many people just point you on your way. We were seated near the back which seemed to be somewhat like an open kitchen feel, which I actually thought was pretty cool. Our waitress was very fast and helpful with picking out our foods based on our likes. Once the food came out, everyone seemed to really enjoy their meals, including myself. We started the table off with the biscuits and fried green tomatoes (demolished!). I kept it simple with the chicken and waffles (delicioius and crispy), which was a HUGE helping (yum!). Others at my table enjoyed the the shrimp and grits and WB chicken sandwich. No complaints heard from them! Overall, I really enjoyed the ambiance, the food, the service, and the experience I had for my first time there. Would come back again for dinner to see if there is a difference.

About 24 minutes went by & I asked the cashier, "is it too late to sit down & eat here?" since there was a table open & no one else waiting on dine in I didn't think it would be much harm. He replied "yeah you got that" I went and sat down & about a minute in the waitress approached us and asked if we checked in. I tried to explain the situation and she cuts me off "it doesn't work that way, you need to pickup your food and leave" then walks off to attend the other tables before I can explain. I try to get her attention again for a few more minutes & she's avoiding me walking around the section where I'm sitting. Then she asks someone if there's "anyone who needs seats" and grabs 2 menus & approaches the table again, this time I explain the whole situation & she gives a half assed apology & tells me she has "2 people who need this table now." I relent & go back to wait by the door. After another 6 minutes of waiting our food gets brought to the dining room by another server & she has to go find us by the front door. Now I'm eating in my car, the fries are delicious & perfectly crispy with a soft fluffy inside. The pepperoni pizza is delicious with some nice small slices of pepperoni so they aren't split between bites. & the burger tastes pretty good, the patty is well toasted & the brioche bun is a nice touch. The food is fantastic which is a bummer because I don't think I'll be frequenting this location if service continues to be like this. However I believe it can be improved with just more communication & a united front & listening to someone when they're talking & not walking off mid conversation. I will not try & pretend like I am not at fault here because I did complicate things when I tried to dine in after ordering to-go, but there are better ways to deal with these things. Thank you for reading, please have a good day! -Ryan
