I stopped by around 10:15 PM and went through the drive‑thru. At first, I thought there was an issue with the intercom because I couldn't understand anything being said. After several attempts to place my order, I pulled up to the window, only to realize the employee working the drive‑thru didn't speak English. I understand it's a Mexican restaurant, but the drive‑thru position requires clear communication with customers. Having someone there who can't communicate in English makes it extremely difficult for English‑speaking customers to order and creates a frustrating experience. If you want to serve all customers effectively, it would help to have someone bilingual--English and Spanish--working the drive‑thru. I tried multiple times to order and was never able to because we simply couldn't understand each other. read more

You know what? Ive only been here once and just ordered the California burrito, but i was really impressed. It was delicious. Not the cheapest at 13 bucks but not the worst either; and it was massive. Every ingredient was delicious, salsas were on point, never had fries in a burrito but its a solid addition; you can choose between guac or sour cream, i chose guac and thats def the way to go. 10/10, will be coming back more for sure! Came here against what should've been my better judgment, considering I've never seen any traffic here. Got the beef roll tacos and they were so hard. My teeth almost broke. Also got the Diablo taco which was it's only saving grace, but even then I feel like it was something I could make at home as long as the slaw was right. Horrible customer service out of the three workers only one was actually working in the back took forever to actually get somebody to come to the front. read more

I ordered delivery from Valerie's, a friend made the order over the phone which was answered in English and then they quickly transitioned to Spanish once my friend started speaking in Spanish. A chicken quesadilla was delivered, which was slightly soggy by the time it got back home but I still enjoyed it. My friend was not a fan of the veggie torta sadly. read more

Hard to judge a taco restaurant with nearly 100 choices on the menu based on a visit and eating just two tacos, but, I will try. This is a counter order restaurant with plenty of seating. The restaurant felt a little grungy, but not dirty. It just has a bit of a used look to it. The woman who waited on me to look through the full menu board was patient and friendly. I placed my order and then noticed that there was a small salsa bar over in the corner. Unfortunately, someone had used the same ladle in all three flavors so there was a splash of red in the green and green in the orange and orange in the red. Not the restaurant's fault. My food arrived in pretty good time, but I was also one of only three people in the restaurant. The Pollo Asado was excellent, full of flavor and plenty of filling in the corn tortilla. The Grilled Shrimp was good, but not as good in terms of flavor balance. Again, corn tortilla. It is important to note that they have corn tortillas, not flour. I was asked about flour and told no. So, overall, good experience, good pricing, can't judge how they would do in a crowd or rush because the kitchen looks pretty small. Salsa bar is a plus. Corn tortillas only is a minus because I have lots of friends who just prefer flour. If I could give 3 1/2 stars I would because it just doesn't quite make a 4-star experience for me. I came into this place to pick up lunch for my wife and 12 year old daughter on a week day. Place seems to have a good following as a group of fireman were in there eating and another group of friends there that day. Menu is quite large consisting of breakfast, burritos, tacos, tortes, combination plates, kids meals, rice plates, chimichangas and salads. Pretty quick turnaround on my order: maybe 10 mins. I ordered a dozen rolled tacos (perhaps flautas to you Texans...LOL) where the choices are beef/chicken for $10.25. They were kind enough to let me order 1/2 of each with no additional charge. They were pretty good. Solid value at that price for a dozen. They use flour tortillas for this. Also ordered a number 1 combination (taco and cheese enchilada, rice and beans included) for $11.49. It was good but you're better off ordering a dozen flautas for value. Finally got a kids quesadillas which is a pretty decent deal at $6.49 that comes with fries and a small fountain drink cup. They do have a sauce station that has some pickled veggies; a creamy avocado-type sauce; cheesy sauce, and then the red and green salsa. Value wins definitely over flavor here and I'm not saying the flavors were bad. Just a filling meal but not one you make a special trip for...none of the sauces knocked my socks off but they had a decent kick. I'd hit this place again for a quick fix. read more

What is up with the food quality at this restaurant? Just ordered three fish burritos. They literally tasted like they took old over fried fish that sat in the refrigerator and threw it in a burrito with some cabbage. Hard as a rock, no fish to be found. Ice cold and I picked them up exactly when their app told me they were ready. Last time we ordered meat it was tough and dry also. One thing I do like about this place is it's the closest thing to a southern California Mexican restaurant. They just don't use good ingredients. At long last, a legitimate "California" style Mexican restaurant that isn't "TexMex." As you may be able to discern from my first sentence, I'm a Californian living in Texas - been here nearly 20 years and I've adapted to TexMex though it is NOT a favorite of mine or my family. Valerie's is from San Diego and has dealt with the same kind of business challenges as other Texas restaurants, though in my estimation has received a disproportionate amount of hate from the locals. Ignore the haters. I repeat IGNORE THE HATERS - they just miss their liquid smoke in the beans (which Valerie's does not do, thank goodness) and they HATE that a California institution would succeed in Texas. I recommend their chicken bowl with rice and beans if you're looking to skip the carbs from a tortilla. Otherwise their burritos and tacos are great. I like their fries with queso, chips and guac, chips and queso, quesadillas (all of them), etc. Check them out and I'm sure you'll like them. read more

Very disappointing. Ordered Chili Rellenos burrito. The rellenos was burnt (black) added avacado which I was charged for, but was not on my burrito. Paid $5 for bean chalupa which was okay. Not sure how you would mess up that. Did not get napkins or salsa with our order. Husband ordered beef burrito and said it was okay, good portion of beef. Bay Area Mexican food is more fresh mex with cilantro, avocado, etc. Anywho I have to admit that Valerie's taco shop matches the San Diego Mexican grub to a tee. I mean there's a sticker on the counter that says Valerie's San Diego so... This venue definitely takes me to the beachy-mountainy feeling after the first bite of their perfectly-sized burritos. This restaurant even has the spicy carrots and different sauces you can put in mini-containers for takeout. Bomb! Grateful for this piece of heaven since it takes me back to what I used to call home. My fave is the shrimp burrito (still not a meatatarian). Skip the mahi because there's just too much breading. Happy eating folks. read more

I've been here now 4 times and it's going to be a regular spot for me now. First time I went I got the California burrito because they market themselves as a CA burrito place. Like California, it was stupid. French fries on a burrito are dumb. Quality of the ingredients were great though so I gave it another shot. Second time I got the Al Pastor burrito and it was incredible. Third time I was a moron and I got the #1 combination plate which was a half-assed beef taco and a cheese enchilada. I will not do that again although the enchilada sauce was great. Today I went and had the Pollo Asada burrito and it was awesome. Going to be hard for me to try anything else in the future. In addition to the great burritos with seemingly homemade tortillas, I really love the sauce bar. They have a tomatillo (mild) sauce that's really good. Not normally a big tomatillo fan but this is light on the tomatillo and heavy on the cilantro/lime/salt which makes it very tasty. They also have a mild red tomato sauce that's good. Then they have a creamy jalapeno sauce that's spicy. Then, if you're an idiot like me that loves really hot, they have what I think is a Habanero red sauce that's hot as balls! It lit me up. How does anyone give this place a high rating and compare it to Cali style Mexican food? It doesn't even come close. The ingredients they use are not fresh the meat is dry and not flavorful the fries are super greasy! So much oil and grease that is made me sick. I thought i ordered the wrong thing the first time (cali burrito) then went back and got the flautas and carne fries and it was beyond greasy. I also got my kids a quesadillas and it was dripping in oil! I wanted to like it so bad bc i LOVE California style Mexican food but I just cant seem to digest this well. The only high point to my meal were the salsas alone. I have only gone through the drive thru and the service was good, no problems there and I've never been inside to know about the ambiance so my review is really based on the food alone and it was very disappointing unfortunately. read more

Not an authentic California taco, because all the taco stands from Morrow Bay to SD serve fresh food. The flavors are familiar, but nothing was cooked fresh at all. Went for late lunch around 1pm. Only 3 employees in the place, one was on break. Ordered a burrito and taco and flan, my friend ordered a chicken quesadilla and elote. Everything came out fast and hot. Yay! Unfortunately all the food was reheated either in a microwave or on the flat top grill. Quesadilla was drowned in a pool of chicken water from the meat as it was reheated. The meat on my burrito was dry and super chewy (maybe cooked yesterday?) The shrimp had no grill marks (or flavor) and was rubbery too. They fried the shrimp on my taco instead of grilled like I ordered. There were some highlights. They whipped up a new grilled taco for me when I pointed out the fried shrimp. The burrito was huge and the taco was stuffed full too. Prices were reasonable. They have agua fresca. Best part was the flan, but Valerie's does not make or assemble it in house. Lol. I've been to this place several times since they opened early July this year. It hasn't improved at all. They have recently paid for another round of 5 star reviews, so be warned. read more

The food and atmosphere were disappointing. The guy at the counter seemed irritated that we asked what flavor a drink was. He answered, put his head down, and walked away. He never returned. Eventually a lady appeared and took our order. She was friendly. It seemed like they may have been the only 2 people working at the time. Every table we checked (about 5) was dirty with crumbs and salsa. Another customer complained about it. The staff had time between customers to wipe the tables down, yet never did, not even after the complaint. It was a little gross. The food was extremely bland and flavorless. The crispy taco looked promising. It had lots of shredded beef, but the meat had no seasoning. The carne asada torta was equally flavorless. The chile relleno tasted only like the pepper even though it was coated in a sauce. The green salsa had no flavor other than a kick of heat aftertaste. The diablo (translates to devil) sauce had no spice, it was basically mayo. How did they name a bland sauce "diablo"? The refried beans taste like they came from a can. The rice was actually okay. The flan looked and tasted weird. It was a custard, but it certainly wasn't flan. It went into the trash. We couldn't eat it. read more
